Commodore’s CommentsAt the beginning of the month the LBYC hosted the ILYA Opti Championship regatta and it was extraordinary. An event this large takes a village and while other clubs might shy away from such an event it was the perfect opportunity for LBYC to showcase why we are the best club in the ILYA. The purpose of the LBYC is to promote and encourage the sport of sailing. This is achieved through support and sponsorship of regattas on Lake Beulah, the support of associations involved in regulation or promotion of the sport of sailing, and by promoting the sportsmanship, good fellowship and volunteerism which are the natural result of these activities and sponsorship. The ILYA Opti Championship had it all and more.

Words cannot describe how inspiring and truly remarkable this event was and how honoring it was to witness the true essence of our club on display for all the ILYA. Being at the club each day you would see sailors, non-sailors, first year members, and even extended family non-members all come together to make this event happen. Next, heading out on the water you would see everything from first year youth sailors as young as 6, through seasoned youth sailors as old as 16. Thank you to our Lake Beulah Sailing School that does an outstanding job training our youth sailors and continues to be

one of the key components in generating new memberships to the LBYC. Scanning the spectator fleet you would see multi-generations of members, from great grandparents all the way down to infants, enjoying the races and sharing stories of when they sailed as kids. The last day of the regatta was the most remarkable. As the families packed up boats and prepared for the trophy presentation, we had the honor of welcoming home our very own Olympic sailor Steph Roble. To witness all the excitement and joy from the kids as they celebrated Steph’s arrival to her grace and willingness to come straight from her return flight from the Olympics to the club is a memory that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Roble/Shea.

With last year being what it was, this event was also very important to generate revenue for the club. The regatta well exceeded our projections thanks to all the great raffle prizes that were donated by members, a sail donated by the Greeson family and all the social volunteers that ran the kitchen, bar, and off-water activities. Thank you, so very much, to all those that made this event a success. You are the epitome of our club.

See you on the water.

Race Committee Assignments are subject to change. Please be sure to refer to lbyc.us if there is ever a question on your race committee assignments or duties. The website is the most accurate place to find information on RC Duties.

From the Sailing CommodoreThe 2021 ILYA Optimist Championship Regatta at LBYC was Awesome ! 89 sailors and their families came to Lake Beulah to participate in this years event. We had great wind on the first day for the RWB Fleet with two races sailed. Unfortunately, no wind on the second and third day, so it was a two race regatta for the RWB Fleet. Once again, Beulah Sailors had an impressive showing with 6 sailors finishing in the top 20. 3) Mia Brandt 4) Isabelle Rietz 8) Alex Mueller 9) Mason Keane 10) Christian Connor 19) Adele Brickler.

Green Fleet was able to complete four light wind races on the last day, Tuesday. Beulah captured 10 out of the top 20 spots. 3) Luca Muller 5) Luke Nowak 6) George Lillwitz 7) Crosby Brickler 8) Ben Seaverson 10) Riley Greeson 11) Natalie Angelo 13) Morgan Seaverson 16) Elizabeth Laabs 18) Isabella Cychosz.

Just as amazing as our sailors, where all the LBYC Members that pitched in and made this regatta happen. Under the direction of Julie Brandt who chaired the regatta, it seemed to flow without a glitch. Molly Barr organized the food service as only she can do! Kathy Kiernan put together an amazing raffle that keep the group buying more and more tickets. To top off this great low wind regatta was our latest Beulah Olympian Steph Roble. She came directly off the plane from Japan, landing at O’Hare, arrived home and was picked up by Tim Lange in his convertible, brought down to the club, where all these young sailors stood on both sides of the road waving American Flags to welcome her home. It was an amazing time. Not only did these sailors and their families get to meet Steph, Annie Haeger was in town and attended the welcome home parade. The two Olympians hung out with the kids and their families signing autographs and talked sailing. It was a great event. Thanks so much to everyone who helped make this happen. It was LBYC at its best!

The 2021 ILYA X Boat Championship was held at Pewaukee July 28 - 31. Beulah Sailors captured 3 out of the top 20 spots in the senior fleet. 4) Brian Zettlemoyer/Matthew Ward 11) Caroline LeRoy/Colin Connor 20) Isabelle Rietz/Halley Greeson.

Beulah Sailors captured 4 out of the top 20 spots in the junior fleet. 7) Alex Mueller/Mason Keane 8) Elise Brandt/Molly Pluess 15) Chandler Jarecki/Adele Brickler 16) MIa Brandt/Avery Keane. Congratulations to all our X Boat sailors for a great sailing in a tough fleet.

The C WYA was held this past weekend at Okauchee Lake Yacht Club in varying wind and between the storms. We did complete 5 races over the three day regatta. Beulah represented almost 1/3 of the fleet with 19 out of the 62 competing. Beulah Sailors took the top 5 spots and a total of 6 boats in the top 20. 1) Peter Keck/Ben Porter 2) Kent Haeger/Mike Greeson 3) Will Haeger/Brad Roble 4) Annie Haeger/ Luke Ramsay 5) Frank Davenport/Jaymie Youngquist/Cullen Barr 11) Micheal Barr/Nora Kiernan 16) Brian Brickler/Kevin Brickler.

Thanks to everyone that had race committee assignments this past couple weeks for making it happen!

Please get your trophies engraved and polished, ready to turn in for our trophy dinner coming up soon.

See you on the water!

– Randy Schmidt

From the TreasurerThe LBYC Financials through July will be posted on the website prior to the Annual Meeting.

Overview: Thanks for all your support. To all the social event chairs, you all worked so hard to make the expected profit. It has been a most successful series of Cookouts and events. At the time of this writing, we have held 29 events. All but two have made the projected budget. That comes from the dedicated volunteer work of our members. A Saturday Yoga and two weekend events were canceled - mainly due to off-lake regatta participation.

LBYC held one regatta this year and, thanks to Julie Brandt, and her team, we will realize a profit of $10,000. Again that came with homecooked meals, generous donations to the wildly successful raffle and careful shopping by the trophy committee. Thank you to the ILYA for providing this opportunity to the club. We have the Dorn and C Challenge to complete the year.

The club welcomed fourteen (14) new members this season. Some are legacy families and we are so happy to have them back in the Beulah fold but the club will realize the highest dollars off of initiation this season if our new prospects choose to continue with full membership.

For the first time in years, tennis will realize a substantial profit. The lessons and new members are revitalizing the program. The children’s lessons are most encouraging.

It is a time of change - prices are increasing, labor costs are higher. We face an aging facility and grounds. Our demographics are changing as our families have their children with families return to the lake. But many more of us live a distance from the lake. Technology has massively changed our financials. The social events are so much better managed with known quantities. Communication, thanks mainly to Neal Klement and Vicki Clayton, have created enthusiasm for our busy summer. And sailing continues to succeed. Our youth and adult fleets represent us well. Rarely does a club have the opportunity to support two successive Olympic campaigns - and, I would guess, NEVER by a club our small size. These are marvelous problems to ponder as we continue to grow and prosper. Financials are the backbone of the club you enjoy.

Budgeting begins in September. The Board will review improvements, repairs and other cost saving or profit generating procedures. Each new Commodore carries a heavy burden in the Fall to improve the operations of our club. Thank you again for your support whether it was your volunteer effort, your participation which was our income or your ideas which keep us moving forward.

Socially SpeakingJuly and the first half of August have been a whirlwind of activities!

We enjoyed our fish fry, 4th of July celebrations, multiple regattas, Sidestays antique lunch, book and dine, cookouts and the biggest event - the opti regatta! We really showed everyone our Beulah hospitality with warmth and grace! The winds did not cooperate but our club did. And then to top it off we honored by the arrival of our Olympian - Stephanie Roble! All of the Optis were over the moon excited with Steph’s arrival. She was joined by past Olympian, Annie Haeger Ramsay. It was a tremendous celebration for everyone there! We all are so proud of the dedication and achievements of Stephanie and Annie!!!

August continues to be busy month with the last of the regattas, our last fish fry and the Commodores Ball! Please join us for the food and fun!

- Lisa

“Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it.” – Ralph Marston

There are so many that have contributed over the last month plus. The Opti Regatta was a herculean effort by so many. Leading the charge was Julie Brandt chair, and then the committee chairs - Stacey Keane, Molly Barr, Nancy Schmidt, Dave Berg, Jeff Lippert, Candace and Dave Porter, Mike and Dawn Greeson, Molly Brickler, Mary K Davenport, Kathy Kiernan, Joe Sko, John Porter and Lindey Neudorff. There are many many more who served in all different capacities, a huge thank you! Although the wind did not cooperate, the regatta was a huge success both socially and financially!

We have had great Wednesday night cookouts. Thank you to Doreen and Dave Schmidt with a very able team including Judy and Dave Skotarzak, Patty Noel, John Tamuzian and Janel Marshall, Jenny Smith and Candace Porter. The Dockside’s french dip sandwiches were delicious!

The last Wednesday’s cookout team worked under challenging conditions - no electricity! They prepped as much as they could at the club and took items to their homes to prepare. At 5:30 we were blessed with electricity! The Smyczek’s continue to head up an exceptional meal. Paul’s special rub, Janet in the kitchen, Shari and Jeff Muellers special barbecue sauce, Tom and Jean Armstrong, Anne Humphrey, Pat Welscher, Tony Majka, and Shari Mueller and Peg San Felippo behind the bar.

We thank all of you who contribute and do it willingly and unconditionally. There are a lot of silent contributors who give so much to the club, consistently, and we are grateful for you!!!!

With Gratitude from Lisa

Sidestays is gearing up for our Annual Meeting, August 17th at 4:30pm (it is incorrectly listed in the Yearbook as August 10th). We will be discussing the distribution of money for the year, and electing the officers for 2022. Please keep in mind that the Sidestays board is a rewarding way to be involved in the Club, and meeting new friends. We are always looking for new members to volunteer for the various offices and committees. If you have an interest in serving, please contact Anne Humphrey before the meeting. We will be having a light supper (provided by the 2021 board) immediately following the meeting.

The Noon Social is also coming up on Thursday, August 26. Some of our members are arranging a delicious lunch for us. Please join us for this final Noon Social…we are hoping to get in a friendly game of bridge and/or Mah Jong.

Good news from the Shoppe! Our Burgees, all sizes, have finally arrived! For those of you who have been waiting, please stop by on Wednesday evenings. The Shoppe is open from 6:00-8:00pm on Cookout nights. Or call Susan Clayton for an appointment.

ANNUAL GOLF OUTING RECAPANNUAL GOLF OUTING RECAP

The Annual Golf Outing has come and gone, and it was a real winner. Eight complete foursomes played a nine hole Scramble with a shotgun start on the Alpine Valley Summit Course, August 6th. Event winners included Team Tom and Barb Atkinson, Milt Haeger and Steve Riehle, with low score overall and fewest putts. Tom Atkinson and Karen Peters had the longest drives on hole 2. Longest putts on hole 6 were won by Ron Clayton and Cheri Riehle. Closest to the pin was won by Barb Atkinson and Bob Mueller on hole 9. Four teams kept their Pink Ball throughout the entire nine holes….not an easy task….which caused the prize basket of Hershey Bars to be depleted. Everyone had stories to tell of lost balls, found balls, missed putts and lucky bounces.

A wonderful buffet dinner was served followed by a dessert bar, provided compliments of Bruce and Elizabeth Firestone. The annual Golf Joke Contest followed, and a reluctant Wendy Bitter had to relinquish the joke “crown” to Pat Thomas whose tale of the founding of golf ala Robin Williams entertained the crowd. We may have to invest in an authentic applause meter some day as there were so many good jokes and tellers of jokes that it is not always easy to discern a winner! Applause to Maryellen and Chuck Heckman, Milt Haeger, and Dave and Wendy Bitter for their excellent efforts. Ask them for a repeat at the LBYC bar some day. Everyone appreciated the service and attention from all the staff at Alpine Valley. And thanks too to the weather gods who held off the downpour until the party was almost over.

House & Grounds by: Greg Thomas Lake Beulah Severe WeatherIt was a lovely evening, July 28, for a boat ride before the Wednesday Night cookout. There were forecasts predicting rough weather but gradually the threat was taken out of the current forecast. The weather had other ideas. At 1:48am on Thursday morning a powerful thunderstorm with tornado warnings ripped through the Lake Beulah area.

A 36” diameter oak tree fell across East Shore Road taking power and communication lines with it. The club house building lost power until mid-morning on Thursday which impacted some deliveries. Power was lost to the electric strike at the kitchen door. By mid-afternoon on Thursday power had been restored along much of East Shore Road by the quick action of WE Energies and Spectrum cable. The original estimate was 30 hours until service could be restored. The Town of East Troy used their front end loader to move the tree off the road but downed power lines kept East Shore Road barricaded from LBYC to Army Lake Road for much of the day on Thursday. The massive 36” oak trunk exited the area on a flatbed truck later in the day on Friday. It was impressive.

The power outage at LBYC caused no damage but some minor interruptions. The tennis court sprinkler control panel reset itself to 2007 and tripped the breaker to the pump that pumps water from the Trout Pond channel. The pump breaker was not discovered until the following Wednesday which left the tennis courts a little dusty.
