Well the year ended really well with a great gathering for the Christmas Party. I hope all enjoyed the festivities, food etc. Certainly for me it was very pleasing and exciting to see over ninety members in attendance seemly enjoying the club and each other. A big thanks to all who organised the event and helped during. As for the beginning of this year we have a great number of budding sailors, and those who are seeking to improve their skills, availing themselves on the great coaching/training being provided by the Sailing School. A very big thanks to all the Trainers, Coaches, helpers and an even bigger thanks to Mick and Helen for their work that enables so many to enjoy our sport. As for the racing, we have had great numbers for our weekly racing and some great competition. The Twilight has been terrific fun and well attended from both Bendigo and Cairn Curran sailors with the results hanging in balance of who will take out the prestigious honours resting on the last couple of races. The Australia Day Regatta was both attended and ran well. We all expected this may have been the last time we ran this due to the small numbers it attracted, however the growth we experienced with over thirty boats was very pleasing and thanks to the work of those involved with the organisation, I’m sure we will see this run again next year with even greater numbers. I can’t not mention that we won the Bendigo/Cairn Curran Challenge and the great effort our sailors put into win this. The Hawkins/Ginnivan trophy has been held very tightly by Cairn Curran for the past two years and it was great to see Elliot Hawkins accept the trophy from Craig Ginnivan, who I’m sure is planning on ways to win it back next year. The Cruising Division has also been having a great time and has run some terrific events and whenever I read about their escapades I get very jealous and sorry I own a Sports Boat where cruising would be very uncomfortable indeed. Due to my own time restraints I’m keeping this article short but I will leave you all with a few reminders. Firstly, it’s the time of year when we should all be thinking of who will be running the club in the near future. Whilst I know I have only been officially Commodore for one season, as previously to that I was minding the chair until the elections, I feel its time someone else should have the opportunity to lead the club into future years. The treasurer has

also tabled he will not be holding office next season, therefore we will need someone skilled in this area to take charge. As for the other committee members I am not aware of their intentions as yet, but if you feel you have something to offer I would encourage anyone to apply for the positions that technically become vacant each year. Secondly, as we are a club and not a service, we all need to put in to keep things ticking along for all of our enjoyment. We have and are all very good at this with many helping out with working bees, Discover Sailing and at regattas, however when it comes to weekly duty where we are only timetabled on for two days in the season, we are finding ourselves lacking. This can lead to safety issues if we don’t have enough staffing to run our weekly races, so please, if you are on the roster and can’t make the date, find someone who can swap or do your duty for you. Thirdly and finally, RULES!!!!!. The rules of sailing are in place for everyone’s safety and enjoyment of the sport. Each week I witness people not giving way leading to close calls and even contact leading to damage. I recently watched someone, who was on port tack, run into someone who was on starboard. The starboard boat tacked away only to be run into again shortly after by the same boat in the exact same manner. The same day I was on starboard, called out early and clearly to a port tack boat who ignored my call and I had to take action to avoid a collision, only to have the same skipper call buoy room shortly after as though he knew the rules all along. These instances only cause upset on the race course so please, if you don’t know the rules, read them, if you do please follow them and If you do find yourself making a mistake and breaking a rule, do your penalty and move on. Good Sailing Russell.

Revised 2015 Post Christmas Roster

Mainsheet 505 9 February 2015

It has been a busy season so far for the BeYC Discover Sailing Centre. The pre-

Christmas program had 10 Cadets, 11 in Start Sailing 1 & 2 and 7 enrolled in Better Sailing. The post-Christmas program has now commenced with similar numbers - 13 Cadets, 12 Start Sailing 1 & 2 and 7 Better Sailing. A successful holiday program was run in January. We had 8 participants, 4 young people and 4 adults. One of these youngsters has joined the club and enrolled in Cadets. Col McEwan qualified as a Powerboat instructor allowing the club to gain accreditation to run powerboat training. So far Col has run one Powerboat handling course at the club. There were 4 participants who included Josh Thorpe, Campbell McEwan and Alyssa Hunter who all needed to do the course to complete their qualifications as instructor or assistant instructor. Col plans to run more courses in the future which we will invite club members to attend. We haven’t programmed a keel boat (trailable) course yet but plan to run one before the season ends. If you are interested or know someone who might be have a chat to Doug Carswell, Rowan Gillies or myself. The new Pacers are fantastic. Students and instructors are loving them and they are getting well used outside training by both students and other club members. The club has a “Club Boat Use Policy” and a process for hiring the club owned boats. The full policy and hire forms is in a folder on the sign on desk outside the control room. The main points are;

The Discover Sailing Centre (DSC) has priority for use of the Club boats. When any training program is planned the boats are for the exclusive use of the DSC.

Subject to the above point Club members may use the boats only on days when there is an organised Club event scheduled unless by prior arrangement with the DSC Principal or Club Commodore.

Preference for the use of these boats will be given to members who are currently undertaking a sail training course with the Club or those members who assist with the training program.

A hire fee of $20 per day or part thereof ($10 per day or part thereof for an Opti) applies. This fee is waived for training participants and those members who assist with the training program.

The hirer must read and sign a ‘Club Boat Hire’ form and submit that form with the appropriate fee before using a boat.

The boat must be packed up and returned to its storage location when the hirer has finished with it for the day and left in a neat and tidy manner ready for the next user.

Any damage that occurs to a boat must be reported as soon as practicable to the DSC via the contact details below. Major damage (boat un-usable or damage to other boat) must be reported immediately.

The hirer must be 18 years or older. The boat may be sailed by younger person(s) but the hirer assumes full responsibility for the boat and it’s users.

We have only just enough instructors to cover our needs this season and next season we will definitely need more help. Elsewhere in this Mainsheet there is an item setting out positions and roles in the DSC that we need to fill for next season. Please have a look at this and consider whether you are able to help. Our training program is critical to the future of the club as it provides a means for anyone interested in sailing to get started. Finally a big thanks to everyone involved in the DSC. Without your hard work we would not be able to do the great work that is being done.

Discover Sailing Centre Update

Mainsheet 505 10 February 2015

Are you able to help with the

important role of teaching people about sailing? The sail training program at the club is critical to the future of the club. It provides a path for anyone who is interested in sailing so they can get started in the sport and is also an introduction to the club. Our standard training is run on Saturday mornings before the club racing in the afternoon. We also run some additional programs such as holiday programs depending on demand and resources. The club is an accredited Discover Sailing Centre (DSC). This means we are authorised to provide Yachting Australia (YA) courses covering dinghies, keelboats (trailables) and powerboats. We need to conform to the prescribed standards and the people who provide the training must also be certified. Next season some of the people involved in the Bendigo DSC are moving on for various reasons. This is going to leave us quite shorthanded so we are looking for help for next season for the following roles. These positions are voluntary except for some courses open to the general public where we are charging full fees to cover costs. Instructors and assistants are then paid for their time. Costs for training courses and registration incurred by instructors are paid by the club. Principal - responsible for managing the DSC. Doesn’t need to be a qualified instructor and in fact it is probably preferable if they are not involved in the hands on training. The principal needs to ensure compliance with the Yachting Australia Operating Standards and Guidelines in areas such as staff and participant safety and quality of courses. All courses and participants need to be registered with YA and an annual review is conducted.

Co-ordinator - is the principal’s main support and helps get the work of organising and running the DSC done. This includes organising and promoting courses and maintaining records. Instructors - do the actual training. They need to be competent sailors and complete their YA instructors course in addition to the following pre-requisites:- first aid, powerboat handling and a working with children check. They are responsible for the quality and safety of the courses being conducted. Assistant Instructors - assist the instructors. They also need to complete a YA assistant instructors course and also need to have their powerboat handling certificate and a working with children check (if over 18). Volunteers - help setup and organise training events. They might launch powerboats, help students leave and return from shore or many other ways that assist with the running of training. Please consider whether you are interested in any of these roles. It’s very rewarding helping people new to sailing learn how it’s done and watching them develop into competent sailors. If you would like to help out this season to get a feel for what happens there are plenty of opportunities to be involved - just ask. If you would like any more information please contact me. 2. PICNIC CRUISE DATE: Sunday March 29. Bring your own Picnic Lunch. Jump on board one of the trailerable yachts or sail one of the school yachts, or sail your own boat to a Picnic Spot on the shores of the lake… More details to follow.

USING THE CLUB TRAINING BOATS:

We would like to encourage all Sailing School participants to use the training fleet (Pacers & Optis) for added practice on Saturdays when club racing is underway. You may wish to take part in the race, or just practice your sailing skills. If you are not taking part in the racing, please ensure that you stay in the sight of the club. This will mean that you can be seen by the people on duty in the tower.

Other club members may also use these boats; however, Sailing School personnel (instructors, assistants & participants) have priority. Bookings ahead may be necessary.

HAVE YOU GOT A BOAT FOR SALE?

Some of the sailing school participants are being encouraged to start looking for their own boats. If you have a boat for sale or even lease, then please let me know and I will attempt to circulate this information to sailing school participants.

Cheers for now

Whispers have been heard at the club that former BeYC member, music

maestro, cruiser and past editor of Mainsheet, John Snowdon, has been spending his time between Bendigo, Apollo Bay, and cruising the Derwent River in Tasmania in his new boat – a 33’ Brolga named Narama. That sounded interesting enough to ask him for a few details. For John, a move back to the sea had been long overdue and he chose Apollo Bay. The sailing club there is quite small, operating out of a container with no water or electricity and a porta-loo providing the only facilities block. They run a mixed fleet when it’s safe to do so: keelboats, Flying 15s; Ynglings; a Lasar, sail out of the little harbor and into Bass Strait, and visitors are welcome to bring their own boats. But part of this sea change involved finding a suitable boat to sail out from there and beyond. Although much loved, She was not that boat. The Brolga first drew John’s attention when he was helping former BeYC member, Mick Ellis, sail his Top Hat 25 from Port Hacking to Cygnet, Tasmania. That’s a little boat to cross Bass Strait, but the Top Hats’ maintain a proven reputation as seaworthy vessels. They were built in Sydney by Geoff Baker, with attention to strength and safety. In any case, John left Mick at Eden for several weeks until he was happy that he had a suitable window in the weather to make the crossing. During that time a Currawong 30’ named Granny Smith stopped by. ‘The weather doesn’t bother me,’ said the solo skipper and off he went to Tassie. When Mick mentioned this, John looked into these boats and learned about the designer Peter Joubert. Professor Joubert is best known for his work in road safety but his boats are also well known, and he remains the only ‘amateur’ yacht designer to draw the plans for a Sydney to Hobart overall winner. He named his boats after birds: Magpie, Currawong, Cape Barron Goose, Brolga, and these boats were also built by Geoff Baker. The 33’ Brolga was designed for cruising and ocean racing, and they have been doing that ever since. A glimpse at Alex Whitworth’s website www.Berrimilla.com demonstrates the extent to which the most intrepid Brolga sailors have pushed that definition:

Berrimilla’s first circumnavigation began with the 2004 Sydney to Hobart race, continued via an unscheduled stop in Dunedin, New Zealand, after a severe knockdown and on to Cape Horn and Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands/Malvinas. Thence she sailed direct to Falmouth, Cornwall UK, talking with the International Space Station Expedition 10 on the way. She finished 11th overall and second in her Division in the 2005 Fastnet race and returned direct from Falmouth to Hobart and then to Sydney in time to start in the 2005 Sydney to Hobart.

Mainsheet 505 15 February 2015

When Narama came on the market, John went to inspect her, and meet her owners Stephen and Heidi. They had also clocked up extensive sea miles in the Pacific, and then on to Canada and back, a journey that they have written about in Narama’s Voyage: http://naramasvoyage.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/naramas-voyage-book.html. Inspiring stuff, providing proof that the boat was well capable of coping with what John had in mind. She came up well on inspection, particularly so for a 43 year-old boat, but Stephen and Heidi had been living aboard for 10 years, seeing to all the maintenance jobs regularly. Narama has a lovely line, is very well equipped with a large sail wardrobe, a well thought out arrangement of instruments, Flemming self-steering and a Yanmar 32hp diesel motor. Inside, the boat is characterized by a galley along the starboard side of the saloon, and warm woodwork throughout. But she’s primarily a sea boat. Everything

locks, ties, secures and otherwise battens down for passage making. For John this is yet to come. He’s been spending his spare time tucked up at a Hobart marina reading manuals, sorting his way through the sail wardrobe, discovering the extent of his purchase by finding equipment and odd items stored at the back of lockers and generally fitting out Narama to his liking. ‘I’ll bring her back to Apollo Bay one day, but I’m in no hurry,’ he said. ‘There are too many waterways to explore in Tassie to be in a rush.’

Postscript: Dirk Van Der Voorden’s Sea Bita She, which John bought some years back was sold to close friends from Maldon. ‘He trained as a shipwright at Garden Island, so it’s good to know that She will be continue to be maintained in the manner to which she has been accustomed,’ said John. New people to enjoy that great little boat. We thank John very much for his story and wish him fair sailing. Perhaps in the not too distant future we’ll hear from him again with some yarns about his travels. Ed.

Decorative Kerosene Lanterns

Members may have noticed the kerosene lantern hanging from a chain in the club house. Jack Carroll has advised that the lantern was donated to the club by Bob Neyland, Commodore of the Narrabeen Yacht Club in 1974, at the conclusion of the Sailfish National Championships hosted by Bendigo Yacht Club. Bob's son Chris sailed in the event, which was won by Brian Carroll. Past President and Life Member Allan Johnson has now donated an identical lantern to the club. Club Buildings Coordinator Colin Nankervis will arrange to hang the lantern in conjunction with the club building renovations.

Model Yacht Racing Looking for something to do on a Monday and/or Wednesday mornings? Take a drive out to Crusoe Reservoir at Kangaroo Flat where some of our members and others race their model yachts around a small course. Participants enjoy a good social morning. Anyone interested have a chat to Dane Boag or Barry Lovell. Another group of model yachties, the Bendigo Model Yacht Squadron, operates through the Salvo’s Men’s Shed. They sail at Lake Weeroona on Tuesdays, using the Rowing Club facilities, around mid-day, sailing a variety of small RC yachts. The group provides mentoring in the construction of the yachts, patterns and materials including the RC equipment. Ian Wallis has joined this group and has started construction of a ‘Star Baby’ sloop, and could provide further details about them.”

F18 Nationals 2015.

This years Nationals were held at the Humpybong Yacht Club on the Redcliffe Peninsula, Brisbane on the Australia Day Weekend. Competitors came from most states, and with overseas crews coming from Hong Kong and New Caledonia. Congratulations go to Brett Goodall and Jason Waterhouse who took out this years title. Weather conditions were good for most of the regatta and a number of sailors had the potential to win races, but it wasn’t until midway on day 2 when the regatta turned into a two boat duel between the Waterhouse/Goodall team and Brett Burvill/Ryan Duffield in Windrush from Western Australia. It’s the third time for both Jason and Brett that they have won this title: twice together, once Brett with his Dad, Greg, and Jason once with Josh McKnight.

Members may have noticed flyers at the club, and

the banner at the Lake Eppalock kiosk, advertising the inaugural Rotary Lake Eppalock Classic Fishing Competition on the weekend of 11/12 April 2015. The event is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Bendigo South, and all proceeds will support the new Bendigo Women's Refuge. The Rotary Club has partnered with the Bendigo Legion Angling Club and Bendigo Yacht Club to deliver the event. The Bendigo Yacht Club General

Committee has agreed to offer the club facilities as the base for the administration of the event, and associated activities (Saturday night meal, and Sunday lunch and presentations). The Sailing Committee has kept this weekend free in the sailing program to enable the event to be conducted. There has been some good publicity in the Bendigo Advertiser where Commodore Russell Denholm featured on behalf of the club. BeYC is not obliged to provide any resources to conduct the event, but we may consider opportunities such as opening the canteen to sell pies, drinks and ice-creams. It is expected that the club rooms and grounds will be quite busy at times over that weekend, with registrations commencing at 4 pm on the Friday afternoon, and prize presentations and close after lunch on the Sunday. The General Committee will have a presence at the club for the duration of the event. Any enquiries to Secretary Bernie Young - 0467 619 258, or

Commodore Russell Denholm - 0418 996 753 .

Sailing & Water Safety Camp Ian Wall, from Yachting Victoria, will again be conducting a sailing and water safety camp for the Castlemaine Steiner School at BeYC from Tuesday 10th - Friday 13th March (the week after the long weekend). About 30 students will camp in the club grounds during that time.
