For the past two years Maitri has been conducting educational projects in Melghat with the help of volunteers. In
the first year a residential ‘100 Days School’ was set up in Chilati (Melghat) for a group 40 school drop outs during
Dec to March. In the next year the ‘100 Days School project was expanded to include Zilla Parishad schools in 3
villages whereby we could reach out to around 70 children. When the project ended last year, the parents from all
three villages told us that it would really be helpful for the children if they get this sort of guidance throughout their
academic year. Hence this year’s project has been planned with a view of connecting the volunteers and locals all
year round. A brief summary of the same is given below.
Gaav Mitra (Village Buddies) have been chosen in 11 villages.
These Gaav Mitra will gather children from their respective villages an hour before school starts and teach them
the basic skills required to understand and apply concepts taught to them in school. The main problem faced by
the children is that of understanding the Marathi language. The Gaav Mitra are originally Korku but can speak
Marathi fairly well, so we feel they will be able to communicate comfortably with the children.
There will be a workshop held in Chilati village every month. Volunteers will go for this workshop. Volunteers will
train the Gaav Mitra during this workshop. This training will basically include an action plan for what is to be
taught to the children in the next month. This will be done via demonstrative classes for the Gaav Mitra. The
volunteers will also visit two villages and actually teach the children there.
The old volunteers will impart training while new volunteers will assist them and also help make teaching
material for the project.
Ramesh and Ashok will oversee the project and will stay in Chilati, Melghat. Both are local youths and have been
onsite coordinators of our projects in the past years. They will help and guide Gaav Mitra in all the villages.
Children will be given some exercises and worksheets to be solved as homework. In this way, to some extent,
their parents will also be able to familiarize themselves with their children’s education
