Moxa Industrial-grade Marine Solutions

Moxa's Breakthrough Computing TechnologiesHigh Performance Computing Power in a Fanless DesignMoxa’s high performance marine solutions are built on the powerful Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel i5 CPUs. On top of that, our fanless designs ensure all that computing power is bundled in a rugged, durable, reliable package. Whether your application is general marine systems management, monitoring or conning systems, radar systems, or ECDIS navigation, Moxa’s marine computers will give you the most reliable use and best returns over the longest term.

High performance computing usually means hot and unstable computing systems, and that means that in environmentally severe situations high performance computers crash. Typically engineers rely on fans to keep that from happening, and that means bothersome maintenance tasks like changing filters, careful monitoring of computer temperature and fan functions, and eventual replacement of all that internal hardware. With Moxa’s fanless solutions, your vessels can avoid all of that, increasing safety and efficiency for the crew and the entire ship.

Comprehensive Connectivity SolutionThe modular design of Moxa’s marine computers give I/O flexibility, making it easy to customize I/O needs to situational demands. For instance, the MC-5150 series includes 8 NMEA ports for marine connectivity, allowing easy connection of marine devices such as gyros, GPSs, echo sounders, and more. These integrated NMEA ports simplify system integration and reduce long term maintenance costs. Yet the I/O benefits do not end with sensors and data; dual VGA and DVI display inputs allow flexibility when designing effective terminal stations, redundant LAN ports give failsafe reliability for ship-board data networks, and multiple PCI slots allow for system expansion and customization.

Moxa’s fanless designs: No compromises on board design: Moxa’s thermal design is system-wide, making the computer system more reliable across the board

A centralized CPU means that heat is evenly dissipated in three directions, increasing dispersion efficiency and adding physical component capacity

Additional heat pipes at the front and rear give optimal heat dispersion.

The rugged thermal design guarantees the computer will operate without any worry of heat-instigated crashes, even when under turbo boost!

Full Component Protection with Conformal CoatingProtective conformal coating on PCBs and other electronic circuitry isolates components from contaminants such as moisture and dust, protecting them from not only corrosion, but also from the vibration and shocks that pervade harsh marine environments. Moxa's conformal coating method ensures a reliable and rugged system by reducing mechanical stress from contaminants, vibration, and shock alike, improving circuitry resistance to extreme temperatures, vibration, and chemical vapors.

Smart Recovery: The Failsafe Against OS CorruptionMoxa also provides solid software dependability that gives peace of mind like no other. Smart recovery puts the power of automatic OS recovery at the user’s fingertips, ensuring that when a computer crashes from operating system failure or filesystem corruption the system may be quickly and conveniently rebuilt, all automatically. Smart Recovery reduces the time and labor costs of maintaining a computing system, significantly increasing the dependability of a ship-board computing system.

Reasons to Choose Moxa for Conformal CoatingUses Dow Corning 1-2577 silicon resin coating, which forms a firm, abrasion-resistant surface after curing

All conformal coated products are tested and inspected in accordance with the strict IPC-A-610D 10.5.2.2 Class 1/2/3 standard under black light

Conforms to IPC-CC-830 SR type thickness requirements (50 to 210 μm)

Additional full-function testing and quality assurance prior to shipment

Moxa's Breakthrough Display TechnologiesECDIS and Color CalibrationAn Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is a computer-based navigation information system that complies with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations and can be used to replace paper nautical charts. An ECDIS system displays electronic navigational charts (ENC) and integrates position information from the global positioning system (GPS) and other navigational sensors, such as radar and automatic identification systems (AIS). To meet ECDIS requirements, all of the displays used in marine applications must comply with color calibration regulations. These requirements ensure that any information shown on ECDIS-compliant displays is “correct” and fully conforms to ECDIS color definitions, guaranteeing the consistency of chart displays in every ECDIS-approved system.

ECDIS-type Approved ProcessDisplays with approved ECDIS color calibration must go through a complex and sophisticated manufacturing, configuration, and testing process before they can meet ECDIS requirements. To provide customers with an ECDIS-approved color library the display must pass several checks that include collecting RGB maximal values, collecting luminance values for RGB 8-step, and then using that data to convert CIE standard colors to RGB colors. All of these steps are part of generating an RGB file that guarantees each panel displays colors accurately as specified for marine applications. At each step along the way, experienced engineers and sophisticated tools are required.

What Distinguishes the Color Calibration of Moxa Displays? The color calibration of each of Moxa’s ECDIS-approved displays is always thoroughly tested, to guarantee a finely accurate, reliable color library. Because of the engineering expertise and technological sophistication involved, few suppliers in the current marine market can boast of technology of a similar level. With more than 25 years of experience in networking automation, Moxa can promise its customers displays which ruggedly fulfill the exacting standards of ECDIS, each carefully tuned for precise and accurate color.

BenefitsIncreased ruggedness and durability: bonding glass to an LCD panel protects the display from wear and tear such as scratches, fluids, stains, or dirt

Condensation: eliminating the gap of air between the protective glass and the LCD panel means that moisture cannot penetrate to cause fogging on the display surface.

Extended temperature tolerance and EMI filtering: the effective temperature tolerance of the display is extended by incorporating ITO heaters, and EMI filters may be added via the same mechanism

Optical BondingOptical bonding is the use of an optical-grade adhesive to glue a pane of glass to a display panel’s viewing surface. The main purpose of optical bonding is to improve visibility under bright light by eliminating any empty space between the protective glass and the display surface. Losing visibility in bright outdoor environments is not caused by problems with image brightness, but rather with image contrast. “Contrast ratio” is the difference of light intensity (or “brightness”) between the brightest white pixels and the darkest black pixels, and that difference is badly affected by bright light and glare. Optical bonding increases contrast ratio by reducing reflected ambient light, thereby enabling a panel to present accurate colors even outdoors, under direct sunlight. This will increase display reliability and safety for outdoor systems that one might find on the deck of a ship, or on an open bridge.

LCD Viewing AnglesWide LCD viewing angles allow marine users to conveniently view displayed images from many different angles, allowing for more flexible placement when arranging and installing ship display stations. Moxa LCD panels allow viewing from 178° across two axes. This guarantees that displays will be clearly visible from nearly all angles with no noticeable color washout. Wide viewing angles give greater flexibility of usage, and translate into greater crew mobility and efficiency.
