Making a Difference

“What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make” Jane Goodall

These words are the reality of being a member of the Lions Club. We truly make a difference in our communities and the world we live in but how much of a difference? To that person we provide a cornea to we have made a profound difference. To that hungry person we gave a meal to, the person we bought glasses for, the park equipment we pur-chase or the college scholarship we provide. All of these are profound impacts on people lives and it makes a differ-ence.

But can we make an even larger difference? What can we do to make our community a better place to live in? Hon-estly at our current membership numbers and participation rates we are doing about all that we can do. We are help-ing so many people and doing great work but we need an infusion of more members to do even more. If we want to remain the status quo we can, for a few years, until we get to old to continue but I feel we still have such a future ahead of us to match the legacy of those that have gone before. We have made a great difference in Puyallup as our legacy proves and I think we have a golden future ahead of us.

We need to continue to move forward and make a differ-ence in our community, no matter how small it is.

“If you think you’re too small to make a difference you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito” An African Prov-erb

Be a Lion

Where there is a need there is a Lion. When it comes to meeting challenges, our response is simple: WE SERVE. In over 200 countries, in hospitals and senior centers, in regions battered by natural disasters, in schools and eyeglass recycling centers, Lions are doing com-munity volunteer work, helping, leading planning and sup-porting. Because we’re local, we can serve the unique needs of the communities we live in. And because we’re global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders.

Sight Programs, we want everyone to see a better tomor-row. That’s why we support sight programs and services including vision screenings, eye banks and eyeglass recy-cling. Provide eye care services to those at risk of losing sight. We raise donations through campaigns like SightFirst and Campaign SightFirst II.

Disaster Relief, we are among the first to respond when disaster strikes. Our Disaster Preparedness and Relief Pro-grams enable Lions to help local communities and contrib-ute to Lions relief efforts in other countries in the event of a natural, man-made or healthcare emergency.

Do you know someone who would like to give back to their community? Do you know someone who has one or two hours of spare time a month? Do you know some-one with new ideas on how we can help those in the community and have the drive to want to see them implemented? If the answer is yes maybe they should be-come a Lions Club member.

Rather than inviting them to come to a meeting ask them to come and work on a pro-ject with us. Let them see what we do in the communi-ty. Invite them to go and look at our web page and see the history of the club as well as what Lions Clubs In-ternational does. Get them interested in what we do by examples rather than just coming to a meeting.

The way we can get people to join us is to ask them to come and check us out. We all need to find that one or two community minded peo-ple to check us out. We cur-rently have twenty-two members and there is no reason we cannot grow to thirty-three by the end of the year. Let’s all ask one.

Project Spotlight

The Christmas tree sale is our longest running project that we do at this time. We have been holding this project sine the first few years we were in existence. At first we would mark each individual tree with a price based on type and height. It was a nightmare due to people not agreeing with the chairs decision and marking them either higher or low-er. Finally the trees were marked at one price for ease of the sale and to make us a true value in the community. Our fair pricing for a good quality tree brings people back to our sale year after year and we normally sell out quickly. This years sale starts on November 26th with the unloading of the truck.

We have made a difference in Puyallup over the years serving Puyallup for the last almost sixty-three years. Highlighted below are just a few of the signature projects that we have accomplished during this time. Some are large and some are small or continuous, all made a difference.

Since it’s inception we have fed the areas needy once a month averaging approxi-mately 500 meals a year for thirty years.

We have provided scholarships to stu-dents on a continual basis since the early 70’s

We provide glasses each year to the needy

We provided emergency medical equip-ment to the hospital ER to remove debris from peoples eyes

We built a restroom and concession stand for the local sports stadium. Also we built two baseball fields at one time.

A member spearheaded the Project Life-line initiative in it’s early development to enable seniors to stay in their homes.

We helped to clean up homes after a dev-astating flood of the Puyallup river.

Countless members picked up eyes and delivered corneas to and from the eye bank for transplant.
