Tax-payer funded research will always need to be held to account. The Sector needs to take ownership of this as much as possible.

It's estimated we can improve cancer outcomes between 10-15% just by systematically using the

information we already have.





How do we change a culture from competition to collaboration?

And how do we get research findings into policy and practice?





Research funding is a relationship. Both sides need to foster it.

All relationships carry risks that need to be managed.

It should not be "them and us".

Dialogue with funders should not end with winning the grant.

Most funders are buying something. They're not simply "granting" money.





We need to get the science of research right.

We are one of the most expensive. The rest of the world is faster, and with

equal quality.





"Resisting change is like holding your breath – if you succeed, you die."

It's no longer a competition between two research groups within your institution.

This is a global arena for research funding.

We need to create teams built around common themes and

strategies using the full range of methodologies – irrespective of

administrative boundaries.





The value proposition is simple: what difference does our research make to the health and wellbeing of our population?
