MICCI traces its history from the formation, in 1837 of its ancestor, The Penang Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. This was a period when a number of Chambers of Commerce in the Asian region came into being.

Following amalgamation with the Perak Chamber of Commerce and the Selangor Chamber of Commerce early in the 20th century, the enlarged Chamber was restructured in 1974 as a company limited by guarantee and renamed the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry, or MICCI, in 1975.
