It is nearly two years since Dr. Ruth Pfau left us. But bigger than the emotional void left by her death is the vision she left us, a vision that is left to us to follow.

The MALC Team has taken up the challenge admirably. In addition to the various rami�cations of the work being done by MALC across Pakistan, 2018 saw marked development in the work for Community-Based Inclusive Development for the Disabled (CBID).

While appreciating the work of the Board Members and workers of MALC, the continuous support of our benefactors, well-wishers and other partners cannot be ignored. It is their unhesitating and continuous support and encouragement that is making all this possible.

With the Blessing of Almighty God and love in our hearts, may we continue the good work keeping in mind the words of Dr. Ruth Pfau: Love will have the last word.

The satisfaction one gets in giving back dignity to a person is a soul touching feeling, and such feelings cannot be expressed or explained but just felt. This realization overcame all of us when the true life story of one of our rehabilitated staff member’s was shared. An individual life, precious to himself and his family, yet slipping away gradually and very slowly in despair as nothing seemed to be working for his progressing sickness. On the verge of losing all hope; and then, out of no-where a ray of hope. Clinging onto this hope, he picked up his life and built on it what he calls his small paradise.

Now happily married with a caring wife and lovely children, he looks back with pride and confidence that he not only survived but made it in life. Asif is like so many individuals who were rescued by the program, which not only treats the disease but the individual that is scarred by the ravages of the disease called Leprosy.

Pledging that there will be no more Asifs, let us resolve to work towards zero tolerance for Discrimination, Prejudice and Stigma.

You all made it possible for people like Asif, your contribution is the expression of the spirit of your support.

LEPROSY ELIMINATION


LEPROSY ELIMINATION – ACHIEVEMENTS

The Leprosy Elimination program is showing remarkable progress in reducing the disease burden in the country. The year 2018 saw a further reduction in new cases from 413 last year to 342 this year. Sindh is the major contributing province in the national registration by 42%, of them, 60% cases are from Karachi. Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces also stand high in numbers with 29% and 22% respectively. The Leprosy Elimination program is being run in collaboration with provincial health departments under public-private partnership. The program is also being supported by WHO, ILEP and a few other international organizations and European friends. Due to their longstanding support, the program has succeeded in controlling the disease in the country. However, Leprosy challenges are still continued especially in early case detection, reducing disability in new cases, and reducing children cases with zero disability. Efforts are being made to address these challenges and we do hope that the measures taken will bring some positive results in the coming years.

COMMUNITY BASED INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENTFOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES:The CBID program has so far identified and registered 4,315 persons with disabilities (PWDs) and needed services delivered to deserving PWDs. The program was initiated in the year 2015 through a 2-year project implemented in Karachi under the sponsorship of the German government through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-sponsorship of the German Leprosy and TB Relief Association (GLRA), Germany. The project successfully ended in December 2017; however, the activities continued in the year 2018 to sustain efforts made through this pilot project. A close coordination has been developed with different stakeholders including NGOs, Disabled People Organizations and the Department of Empowerment of PWDs, Government of Sindh through which PWDs are being facilitated in different development sectors. With support of various government departments, MALC was able to facilitate over 200 PWDs in acquiring Disability Certificates and National Identity Cards. The Disability Certificate or National Identity Card is the basic document required in order to avail any facilities, benefits or concessions under the available government schemes.

TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL


TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL ACTIVITIES:

MALC is contributing to the Provincial TB Control Programs by treating over 9,000 patients annually. Diagnosis is done through the latest and most modern technology of Gene-Xpert, whereas the treatment is following WHO’s recommended DOTS strategy. Over 220,000 patients have so far been treated and cured, of them 68,200 (31%) were sputum positive. TB camps are also arranged in slum areas of the country to identify new cases and to stop the further spread of the disease.

MALC is also a sub-recipient of the Global Fund through Mercy Corps and working under PPM Model in 7 project areas (4 in Azad Kashmir, 2 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 1 in KP). The project is contributing 13% in the annual registration of new cases. Coordination with general practitioners, contacts and community screenings for TB are the major components of this project. BLINDNESS CONTROL ACTIVITIES:

This year the program managed to achieve 5,606 Cataract surgeries, 50% of them were achieved through outreach surgical eye camps sponsored by CBM Germany, local corporates and philanthropists. The major activities that were performed through this program were eye consultations in OPDs, screening of patients, refraction, surgeries, consultations for diabetic retinopathy and prevention of childhood blindness. Eye glasses were also distributed to needy patients. All services were provided free of charge.

We are thankful to CBM Germany and our local funding partners for their financial support to continue the program activities.We are also thankful to HBL Foundation, New Zealand High Commission and National Bank of Pakistan for their generous support for conducting Eye Surgical Camps in Balochistan for poor and marginalized people of the remote parts of the province.

MOTHER & CHILD HEALTH CARE

Pakistan has one of the highest rates of maternal and children mortality across the globe. In Pakistan each year over 30,000 women die from pregnancy-related causes. Children mortality is also high with over 400,000 deaths of under-five children per year. Malnutrition is very much prevalent in Pakistan, especially in rural parts of the country. According to reports, 45% of children under the age of 5 years are stunted and 32% are under-weight. However, it is not confined to children but also among women of reproductive ages suffering from anemia and iron deficiency.

The MCHC Program at MALC aims at contributing to the reduction of maternal and children (under five years of age) mortality in Pakistan. Initially, the program started in 1981 through a pilot project in Afghan Refugee Camp in Karachi. Since 2012, the program has expanded not only in Karachi but also in rural Sindh and Punjab. In Punjab, the project is being managed in collaboration with ICI Foundation where two centres have been established and needed services being provided free of charge to patients.

TRAINING AND ADVOCACY, COMMUNICATION ANDSOCIAL MOBILIZATION

ACHIEVEMENTS:

The Training Institute at MALC has been conducting regular training courses on Leprosy for over 50 years. Besides training, undergraduate students from different medical colleges of the city who visit MALC to obtain Leprosy knowledge and gain an insight into successful Leprosy Control in Pakistan, MALC’s main hospital in Karachi has been recognized as a facility for mandatory training of candidates pursuing FCPS-II (Dermatology). Other Post Graduate Medical Students (Dermatology) also visit the Hospital as part of their training.

MALC is providing free treatment to the patients affected by Leprosy, Tuberculosis and Eye-related diseases. With your

support we have been able to treat thousands of people in 157 centres across the country. In the year 2018, our friends

have supported us with Zakat amounting to Rs. 20,207,077 which was spent on free treatment and rehabilitation of

Leprosy, TB and Eye patients in the hospital, and in medical camps conducted in Sindh and Balochistan provinces. We are

confident that your support will continue to help the poor and needy people of the country.

To help continue our work, individual supporters can contribute with Zakat and Donations for one of the following:

Donate Rs. 5,000 to operate one deserving Cataract patient with Intra-Ocular Lens.

Donate Rs. 10,000 for complete one-year treatment of a Leprosy patient.

Donate Rs. 12,000 for complete 6 to 8 months treatment of a TB patient.

Donate Rs. 15,000 for rehabilitation of a patient with Disabilities.

Donate Rs. 20,000 for surgical intervention of a Leprosy patient or a person with disabilities.

Donate Rs. 25,000 for socio-economic rehabilitation of a TB patient.

Donate Rs. 30,000 to support the education of one child for one year.

Donate Rs. 50,000 to set up a small business for a person with disabilities to live a life with dignity.

Individuals/Corporations can adopt one of our following projects for at least 3 years to meet its annual running cost and

to ensure continuation of health services for deserving patients and communities. Project proposals are available at MALC
