NO HOLDS BARRED

Life’s comfortersWhen it was beyond doubt that cancer had conquered my

wife Lakshmi and that the rest of the rigmarole was awaiting game for the final closure, friends recommendedthe induction of palliative care by experts in the line to givecomfort to the prone patient.

This draw on the inherent quality of kindness in everyhuman being is about the last cheque drawn from the lovefactory that marks the final phase in a patient’s bedriddenstate but, of course, without the slightest inkling that thestop light is not very far away.

Luckily for us, the search for quality palliative care ledus to Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust at LakshmiSundaravadanan Hospital on Poonamallee High Road, where Dr. Subathra and Dr. Asoke Mathew assured uspalliative support.

When Dr. Mathew and his team visited our home duringthe 10-week association that followed, Lakshmi was al-ways happy to see his kind and gentle face and hear his soft, reassuring voice that put her at ease. After the sessionwith Lakshmi, he and the palliative care nurse Sona wouldsit with our family to reassure us regarding her condition. He would invite questions from us and patiently answer ourdoubts. The first few times after the home visit by Dr.Mathew, I would ask my son Dev to pay the good doctor whotook the load of our shoulders each time he visited. But thegood doctor always used to wave us off saying there was nocharge for kindness.

In a world where regular hospitals are run like corporateswith a clear eye on profits, the free rendering of service tothe suffering patients - even those capable of paying thestiff fees normally charged by big hospitals - looked incred-ible.

After Lakshmi’s passing away on 29th February, wevisited Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust to donatethe unused medicines and some items of comfort for thepatients. Our main objective was to thank these wonderfulpeople with loving hearts, who use the profession not as amere means of livelihood but as a means of providing careand comfort to those whose lives are drawing to a close. Itis a pity that not many in our great city know about thishumanitarian team of dedicated professionals. May I patmyself on enlightening readers of Anna Nagar Times andMambalam Times about this wonderful group!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Free bus tokensSir, Free tokens to travel in MTC buses for senior citizens is a useful

move. But senior citizens are forced to wait in queues for a long timeto collect the tokens at the counters. Now, only five tokens are issuedat a time which is not sufficient. So I appeal to the authorities toincrease the number of tokens considering the senior citizens’ travelneeds and to make arrangements to obtain the tokens in an easy way.- Vittal Rao, West Mambalam

Damaged EB cable not replaced for over 3 monthsSir, During the floods last December, the underground 3-phase EB

cable supplying power to two houses on 6th Street, K. V. Koil Street,West Mambalam including mine got damaged.

TNEB staff at that time drew a single phase connection from anearby junction box to provide temporary power connection to the twohouses. But till date, the damaged cable has not been repaired orreplaced. In spite of repeated complaints to the fuse call office andpersonal requests made to the AE, no action has been taken to repairthe cable even after a lapse of three months. A complaint registeredin Amma Call Centre has also not evoked any response.

Due to single phase supply, the residents are not able to use highpower appliances like geyser, microwave and air-conditioner. I appealto TNEB officials to immediately attend to the cable fault and restore3-phase current to the two houses. N. Srinivasan, 5, 6th Street, K. V.Colony, West Mambalam

Problems aplenty as flats used as hostelsby commercial entities

Sir, The owners of the commercial complexes in T. Nagar areacquiring flats in residential apartments close-by to accommodatetheir employees. A case in point is a residential apartment complex inRangan Street, T. Nagar where a big commercial entity acquired someflats as they are close to its showroom. It has provided accommodationto 10 of its male employees in the flat, thereby converting the flat intoa hostel. This has led to several problems like water shortage, sewageblocks and security concerns. After several complaints by the resi-dents, the male employees were shifted out and the flat is now occupiedby about 10 woman employees. But the main problem still remains. The practice of letting out flats to commercial entities for the greed ofhigher rent defeats the very purpose of the concept of apartment living. There is no guarantee that these commercial establishments will notuse these flats for commercial activities in the future. While on this, wewonder how hostel accommodation can be provided without gettingappropriate approval from the authorities. As per the Act passed bythe Government of Tamilnadu in respect of providing accommodationin hostels particularly for women, severe conditions are imposed.Safety and security are another issue as one does not know thebackground of those who are accommodated. Sometime ago, the policedepartment sought details of the tenants staying in residential com-plexes. It is not known whether the department has obtained informa-tion in such cases. What security and safety do the residents have? We,therefore, request the authorities to take suitable steps to regulate theactivity of converting residential flats into hostels. If no action is taken, the Residents Association should not hesitate to move legally to restorethe fundamental rights of the residents. - T. Nagar Residents’Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar.
