By Our Staff ReporterFollowing the letter ‘Damaged manhole cover poses danger outside Nathan Apartments’ published in ‘Mambalam Times’

(May 9 - 14 issue), it was replaced with a new cover on May 12. Similarly, the damaged car dumped near Aranganathan subwaywas removed from the spot following the report published in an earlier issue of Mambalam Times.

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 7N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM

Kamakshi, for that was Vasanthakokilam’s given name, hailed from a Brahmin Iyer family of Irinjalakuda, now inKerala, but the family had settled down in the port town ofNegapatam (now Nagapattinam) on the Bay of Bengal.

The young girl was blessed with a melodious honeydew voice, and her father had her trained in Classical Carnatic music inNegapatam. She and her father nursed and nurtured theambition that she should be a performing musical artiste andwin fame and fortune.

The sadly neglected Indian film pioneer, the lawyer-turned-filmmaker, K. Subramanyam, had strong links with Negapatamthrough marriage into a wealthy lawyer’s family. Ever a talentscout, he felt that the girl had talent and could be groomed intoa singing Tamil film actress.

That was the period when onscreen performers in movieshad to sing in their own voice and the now common and routineoff-screen-voice-lending - ‘play-back’ - system had not yetcome into vogue.

Prompted by his encouragement and promises, the fatherand daughter landed in Madras where they hardly knew anysoul or body except K. Subramanyam! They did not have muchmoney either. Regretfully they could not meet Subramanyamsince he was away in Calcutta making a film. So the two wereall at sea in the bayside metropolis.

Luckily, a family friend, a young bachelor and a native ofNegapatam who had learnt music along with Kamakshi underthe same guru, was then working in the Egmore station of thethen privately-owned South Indian Railway (SIR). He came totheir rescue and gave them refuge in his bachelor-quarters atthe outskirts of the city.

(The retired railway executive narrated the story-book likeevents of the 1930s to this writer during a rainy evening inMadras in the early 1980s but wished to remain anonymousfor obvious reasons!)

At some risk and much trouble, the Good Samaritan workedhard to promote his small town friend - by now his lover! Usinghis connections, he succeeded in getting his mate a break tosing over radio then run by the Corporation of Madras. The localstation broadcast its programs only in the evenings. All IndiaRadio, Madras, was yet to be born!

She sang at many other places in the city and cut discs (thencalled ‘plates’) for His Master’s Voice (HMV). She also wonprizes and gold medals in music competitions. Critics andcrowds began to take notice of her. By now she had a new name,N. C. Vasanthakokilam!

(The Good Samaritan’s family came to know about it all andmarried him off quickly, and the relationship came to a sad end! However he kept in touch with his pal and met her now and thenas ‘just friends’! )

Vasanthakokilam too got married but sadly the marriage didnot last long. Ambitious and her goals clearly set, she bade herhusband goodbye and all that, and pursued her career withdevotion and tenacity. The poor man set up a modest restau-rant - known as ‘coffee club’ in Thanjavur district lingo andidiom - in Thiruvaiyaru, the famed small town associated withthe musical savant, the legendary Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal.

Whenever Vasanthakokilam came to that town for musicconcerts during the popular Thyagaraja Aradhana festival, hewould shut shop and vanish from that town. He did not wish tobe in the same town as she even if it was only for a day! (Anunderstandable sentiment indeed!)

With her fame as a singer slowly but surely rippling out,Vasanthakokilam set her sights on cinema and knocked on itsdoors. By then M. S. Subbulakshmi had already come intomovies and had become a star and a cult figure. With MSmaking waves, could NCV be far behind? (To be continued)

Garbage dumped in street junction

Sir, The junction of Ganapathy Street andThambiah Road (West Mambalam) has beenconverted into a garbage dumping yard.

Both residents and vendors are equally re-sponsible for it. As the garbage is not clearedregularly and the bins become full, residentsthrow garbage in the surroundings. Residentshave noticed even the door-to-door garbagecollectors dumping garbage in the junctioninstead of carrying it to the collection center. Itis turning into a severe health hazard and thereis proliferation of mosquitoes as well. Streetdogs and stray cattle have a field day.

This has been going on for several monthsand no action is being taken in spite of severalcomplaints to the officials in the CorporationZonal Office. Giri, Ganapathy Street, WestMambalam

Don’t be fooled by offer of freebies!Sir, It is really sad to hear political parties

promising several freebies through loudspeak-ers during their campaigns instead of promis-ing developmental schemes.

Sadly this year too these freebies could be-come the deciding factor in the elections in-stead of development.Who does not own asmart phone today? The cell phone freebie,50% subsidy on scooter and similar other free-bies promised are a huge waste of money ofthousands of crores of rupees in the hands ofthe exchequer. With the State Governmentalready reeling under a huge financial burden,I wonder from where all this additional moneyfor freebies is going to come? The money, in-stead, can be well utilized for development ininfrastructure development like power, agri-culture and so on. My appeal to voters is to notfall for the freebie charm but instead vote byyour conscience for the most deserving candi-date in your constituency. H. VidhyaBhandarkar, 40, 8th Avenue, Ashok Nagar

Phony Samsung employee cheatsresident of Rs. 2,000

Sir, A man named ‘Chandran’, claiming to bea Senior Service Representative fromSamsung, wearing a company uniform andflashing an ID card, visited my house on May8. He collected Rs. 2,000 towards ‘annual main-tenance contract’ for the Samsung washingmachine that I own. He assured me that hewould be back to do a free service the same daybut has not come so far.
