311th Aachen Technology and Innovation Management Conference
Greetings
A carefully thought-out Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) can no longer be regarded as a luxury, it needs to become an absolute necessity! The core task of TIM is to ensure that techno-logies (product, production and material technologies) required for innovations are available at the right time and at reasonable costs. Particularly in German manufacturing companies, successful Technology and Innovation Management has been equated with developing new technologies, introducing new products and pursuing a policy of continuous improvement. Nowadays, in addition to continuously improving the technology and product portfolio, it is becoming essential for companies to rethink the fundamental principals of their business activities: their own business model. Technological differentiation and opera-tional efficiency are no longer sufficient to guarantee success in the environment of international competition. Frequently, new business models are the basis for innovations and enable access to market success. The competence of recognizing techno-logical potentials at an early stage, deve-loping those pointedly and applying an appropriate business model will become the most important factor in determining business success or failure. Thus, a consistent technology and innovation strategy is required.
The motto of this year's 11th Aachen Technology and Innovation Management Conference is: “Managing Breakthrough Innovations”.
In numerous lectures you will learn how suitable processes, structures and methods can be designed to create an efficient Technology and Innovation Ma-nagement. Besides keynote speeches and examples from industrial practice, the emphasis will be on the exchange of ideas and opinions among participants.
You are cordially invited to exchangeviews and discuss your own experienceof Technology and Innovation Manage-ment during the conference with both our renowned speakers and otherparticipants.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the 11th Aachen Technology and Innovation Management Conference in October.
Sincerely yours,

The Event
Conference ConceptThe aim of the conference is to facilitate the implementation of successful approaches in Technology and Innovation Management for participants within their own companies. The conference will focus on practice-oriented presentations held by renowned speakers from industry and science. Successful approaches on selected issues arising in modern Technology and Innovation Management will be introduced and concreted through case studies. Additionally, new impulses from applied research in Technology and Innovation Management will be presented. Besides advanced training and interdisciplinary knowledge exchange, the opportunity for networking is a key element in our conference setting.
Conference ProgramThe motto of this year's 11th Aachen Technology and Inno-vation Management Conference is “Managing Breakthrough Innovations”. The conference contains detailed presentations on successful innovation approaches from both the industrial practice and the research area. It ranges from identifying new ideas and technologies through their target-oriented deve-lopment and assessment to the implementation in successful products on the market. The number of participants is limited to ensure an efficient transfer of expertise in dialogs between participants and speakers. In addition to the presentations from industry and science, there will be numerous opportunities during breaks and the evening event to share experience and to extend the personal network.
Target Group for the ConferenceThe conference is addressed to specialists and executives of technology-oriented companies, particularly from the sectors Research and Development, Technology and Innovation Ma-nagement, New Business Development and Strategy, Produc-tion as well as the Technical Procurement and Management.
Common ExchangeDuring the breaks you will have the opportunity to network with both the other participants and speakers. Furthermore, you can discuss issues of your particular interest. Use the opportunity to get to know each other, to establish new contacts and to enter into dialogues with speakers or employees from one of our institutes.
At the end of the first day of the conference, you are cordially invited to take part in our evening event. The soiree offers an opportunity to continue discussions which started during the day and to finish the first day in a relaxed atmosphere.

8 11th Aachen Technology and Innovation Management Conference
The core function of Technology and Innovation Management is to ensure the continuous improvement of the company´s own product portfolio, to implement new business models and to provide the technologies (product, production and material technologies) required for current and future products at the right time and at reasonable costs.
“Culture of Innovation as the Key Factor in Future Competitive Strength”Culture of InnovationOne of the main barriers of successful innovation activities is the lack of a clear, corporate innovation culture lived out on a daily basis. This factor is frequently under-estimated by decision makers. In many instances, the consequences are fatal: Even the most promising ideas cannot be launched successfully on the market when they come up against internal barriers such as the “not invented here syndrome”. Dismantling this form of resistance and developing an innovation-friendly corporate culture are among the most important management functions and are key factors for future competitive strength.
“New Business Models for Marketing Technological Innovation Successfully“Business Model Innovation Particularly in German companies, successful Innovation Management has previously been equated with the development, introduction and continuous improvement of new products. But alongside the continuous improvement of the product portfolio, there is a need to rethink the fundamental principles underlying the own business activity: the business model. In today’s environment of international competition it frequently does not suffice to simply increase operational efficiency nor to implement a purely technological differenti-ation.
“Open Innovation – Know How to Do It“Open InnovationIntegrating external parties, e.g. customers, in the innovation process is a valuable, yet frequently not suffici-ently well exploited source of information relating to requirements and solutions. Used correctly, Open Inno-vation can provide a considerable support for developing product, service and business model innovations resulting in a new form of customer involvement and customer loyalty.
The Priorities
911th Aachen Technology and Innovation Management Conference
“You don´t Miss the Train at the Platform, You Miss It when You Get up“Technology ForecastingThe ability to recognize technological opportunities and risks at an early stage guarantees a decisive com-petitive advantage. This involves defining the right search fields, identifying relevant technologies punctually and assessing their efficiency and potential correctly. A systematic technology forecasting process helps to control the flood of information and, thus, creating a solid basis for technology decisions.
“Compulsory Subject: Technology Strategy“Technology StrategyAnalyze your core technological competencies and formulate an explicit technology strategy. In doing this, you set priorities, make the right decisions and use your technological resources and abilities efficiently. Thus, you know what technologies you should develop at which time and for which purpose. At this, tech-nology platforms ensure that the technological basis of your company is manageable.
“Assessing Technology by Determining the Competency Fit“Technology AssessmentDecisions requiring a technology assessment occur in all phases of Technology Management. The use of suitable assessment methods can increase the quality of the decisions and, consequently, the probability that the initiated actions will be successful.
“The Technology Plan Operationalizes the Technology Strategy“Strategic Technology PlanningA rigorous, method-based technology-planning process enables you to remain in control of the increasing planning complexity of products as well as of product and manufacturing technologies. Using a technology roadmap derived from the technology strategy, the planning levels can be synchronized, technology fore-casting integrated and transparency of other planning options can be created.
“Increasing Speed via New Methods in Technology Development“Agile Technology DevelopmentEfficient requirement engineering and the generation of prototypes at an early stage in the process are essential in order to reduce uncertainty in the fuzzy front end phase. Rigid structures, long development times and insufficient customer involvement frequently result in unsatisfying development outcomes. That is why it is important to select suitable process structures which are capable of achieving an effective and efficient development process on the basis of the project characteristics. One option is to use incubators and/or accelerators for example or a separate eco-system applying the garage-approach in order to break established ways of thinking.
