Many of the satellite nations
wanted more independence and freedom from the Soviet Union.
In Czechoslovakia tried to ease up on Soviet censorship policies and give people more freedoms – this time period was known as the Prague Spring.

Warsaw Pact nations to invade Czechoslovakia.
This created a lot of anger amongst the satellite nations.

Soviet leaders began SALT – strategic arms limitation talks, or discussions about limiting the number of nuclear weapons each country produced.

In the 1970s, tension rose again. The
harsh treatment of Soviet protesters threatened the SALT II negotiations taking place.
In 1979, Carter and Brezhnev signed the SALT II agreements. However, after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Congress refused to ratify the agreement.

Reagan cont’d the move away from
détente. In 1983, he announced the Strategic
Defense Initiative (SDI) also known as Star Wars to protect the US from enemy missiles.
While the plan was never put into effect, it remained a symbol of anti-communist feeling in the US.
