Home and School Meeting: Last Tuesday @ 7:00pm Home and School had their first meeting for the year. At that meeting it was

decided that the remaining funds should be earmarked for the following projects: shade sails for playground / pool area, naming of the school gazebo, assistance towards Term 4 whole school camp (Forest Lakes – Levin), new high jump measuring uprights, and any

remainder funds to be put towards fundraising for a new junior playground. Home and School have also put $5000.00 towards the cost of our new sandpit. On behalf of the school, I thank Home and School for their support. Fundraising is an important aspect of the

school as it provides the extras for the children that our ministry operational grant funds do not afford. Thank you Home and School!!

Your support is appreciated.

Rural Swimming Sports Y4 to Y8: As you are aware this Friday is our annual rural swimming sports for our Y4-8 children. Thank

you to those parents/caregivers who have already returned their transport slips. Please have them all returned by this Wednesday 5th

March. Thank you!

Rural Swimming Sports Practice: This Tuesday we will be taking our Y4-8 children up to the Taihape Swim Centre so they can have a swimming practice in the larger pools in preparation for Friday’s event. Thank you to Catherine Phyn and Sarah King for assisting

with transport to and from the event. We are booked in from 9:30am to 11:30am – any queries don’t hesitate to give me a call.

Ministry of Health - Reported Measles Cases: Please be aware that there have been 47 confirmed cases of measles reported in the

North Island since Dec. 2013 to end of Feb 2014. A total of 8 cases have required hospitalisation to date. Most cases have occurred in unimmunised people, and immunisation remains the best way to prevent infection and spread within the community. Measles are a

highly infectious disease that affects both adults and children. Measles are more serious than many people realise. Symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes and a runny nose, followed by a rash, which tends to start on the face, before moving over the head and down

the body. The rash develops about 3 days after the other symptoms start. Complications can include middle ear infections, pneumonia,

and, more rarely, encephalitis or brain inflammation.

Please ensure that you and your child/ren’s immunisations are up to date. If your child does contract measles – they are to stay away

from school and follow the advice of your doctor or local medical officer of health. For more information please visit the Ministry of

Health website: http://www.moh.govt.nz/measles or the Immunisation Advisory Centre website: http://www.immune.org.nz You can also call Immunisation Advisory Centre toll-free on 0800 IMMUNE (0800466863).

Have a great week!

Waipahihi School in Taupo has been running an Ironkidz Triathlon event for the last 15 years. I

have entered the last 3 years and Nicole has entered the last 2.

There are 2 participation sections 7-10 years which is a 100m swim, 4km bike ride and 1km run.

11-15 years which is a 200m swim, 8km bike ride, 2km run. Last year they started a Splash and

Dash section for 5-7 year olds which is a 50m splash and 550m dash. They have a competitive

section called elite which is a 300m swim, 12km bike ride and 3km run.

I decided not to do the elite section because I was running in the Round the Lake Relay the day

before for Dad’s work team. I ran 6.9km in 35min 32sec and then a few hours later one of my team

members hurt her knee so I finished her last 4km in 18min. Nicole ran 4.7km in 27min 56sec.

This year Mangaweka School won the Ironkidz School Participation Award for the 11-15 year old

section. They worked out that 16.7% of our eligible roll took part—it helps there’s only 6 of us! I

received the trophy and a $300 cheque on behalf of Mangaweka School on Sunday 23 February and

Nicole and I presented it at last weeks assembly. By James McCann
