Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

President’s Report

Whilst we didn’t capture any trophies this season, it would be unfair to call the past season a disappointment. I think the attendance of 225 people at our Annual Presentation Dinner in May was testament to that! The season-ending injuries to our 1st grade opening bowlers Nick McLachlan and Mickey Edwards, left a massive hole right through the grades, which was inevitably too big a hole to fill. However, on the positive side, it provided a lot of opportunities for our younger stars to experience top grade cricket where they all performed well – and as Steve Beatty mentioned in his report, we had all five grades in contention to play finals cricket as we entered the final round. We firmly believe that this season has provided a platform to enter the 2017/18 season with a lot of hope. We welcome Chris Green to the Club as our 1st Grade captain for the new season. Chris is a quality person who will be a great asset for us – and he lives in Manly! He fills the leadership shoes of Adam Crosthwaite, who I’d like to thank for all his efforts in the captaincy role over the past few years. Thanks to all the Captains and all the talented Coaching staff, for their respective commitments across the season – and to Chris Hynes for his commitment to the Chairman of Selectors role. Thanks also to the team at Green Options for their amazing work on Manly Oval and Graham Reserve. They proved why they are the best in the business after inheriting a debacle at the start of the season. We also thank Northern Beaches Council for their support. Thanks also to The Manly Daily for their coverage of cricket and well done to Andrew Prentice on finally winning SCA’s Phil Tresidder Award for best season coverage!

It was terrific to see the players organize an end of season Tour to New Zealand, the first overseas tour for the Club since Sri Lanka in 2000. Prior to this, the Club had successful Tours to Asia in 1989 and the UK in 1991. It would be wonderful to see more of these overseas Tours in the future. We also thank our Patrons, Mike Baird, Michael Regan and Jean Hay. Jean has now officially retired and we congratulate her on a wonderful career where she has donated countless hours to the sporting community on the peninsula. We congratulate Joel Mason on becoming the 49th Life Member of MWDCC, a much deserved recipient of this prestigious award. As we watch the close relationships evolving amongst the current crop of young players, I hope they too can keep building on these friendships and continue contributing to the amazing legacy we have built at MWDCC as a “Family Club.” And who knows, some of you may one day get the Club’s ultimate award of Life Membership bestowed upon you, just like Joel did this year! Off the field, the Club is very fortunate to boast what I believe is arguably the best Board in our 139 year history. It is an absolute pleasure to work with a group of quality, experienced, people, all of whom are so passionate about our Club. It is a largely thankless task, but all of them do a mountain of work behind the scenes, so I’d like to acknowledge each of them; David Gainsford One of the Club’s greats who is such a wonderful asset to our Board. Rarely a day passes, where

our Deputy President is not contributing something to our Club! Steve Beatty Without doubt the best Honorary Secretary in Sydney Grade Cricket. Steve has now retired after a very successful business career, so we’ve assured him there’s always plenty more work for him at the Club if he wants it – although not sure if he can fit anymore in! Scott McLachlan An absolute professional as our Honorary Secretary. Not only does Scotty ensure our Club is fiscally sound and provide state of the art financial reports, but he contributes so much more around the Club. He was a worthy winner of the Keith Marks Clubman of the Year. Joel Mason As mentioned above, only fitting that Joel received Life Membership, as he continues to devote so much time to our Club as our Business Manager. John Warn We are fortunate to have the Chairman of Cricket NSW on our Board. It’s been amazing watching Warny’s career grow over the past 10 years and he is a valuable contributor to our Club as our SCA and CNSW delegate. Ross Denny Roscoe has done a terrific job as Pathway Manager over the past few years and is now moving into the very important role of Women’s Cricket Manager, as the Club breaks new ground by entering a team in the Under 17 Brewer Shield this season.

Mick Trevaskis Another successful businessman whom we are very fortunate to have on our Board. Mick is CEO of Device Technologies and has an incredible passion for our Club. He has also provided career opportunities for several people from our Club. Adam Gummer As the youngest member of our Board, he has impressed as all in his role a manager of Club events and also as our SCA Delegate with Warny. Has the potential to become one of our top administrators! Tim Cruickshank This was Tim’s first year on the Board and it was terrific to have a 1st Grade premiership captain join us with his valuable input. Tim took on the Community Manager role and also joined the Coaching staff, doing a terrific job as PG’s Coach this season. Roy Vumbaca This was also Roy’s first year on the Board and another who has made an impressive and important contribution in his first year, in a diverse role across Clothing, Coaching and also setting up some new templates that will be very beneficial for us next season. So from a President’s perspective, I could not possibly ask for a better group of people to be responsible for the Management of our Club. Well done to you all! I look forward to the 2017-18 season with great excitement and the knowledge that our Club is in a great place right now. Good times ahead! Andrew Fraser Honorary President 2016/17

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

To the wider cricket community involved with Manly Warringah District Cricket Club, the board has the pleasure in submitting the 139th Annual Report, including the financial statements, covering the 2016/17 cricket season. The club entered teams in the five Sydney Grade competitions, along with the First Grade Limited Overs and T-20 competitions, the Poidevin-Gray and AW Green Shield competitions. The Club had 3 teams contesting finals – 2nd Grade, 4th Grade and PG’s. Each bowed out in the quarter final, all games were weather impacted. MWDCC ran 6th in the club championship. These facts indicate a good season, but it needs to be stated that all teams were in contention for the finals going into their last games! The coaching staff believe in the club playing-roster, especially with the elite young talent progressing through our system. Part of the mandate as a Cricket Australia Premier Club is to develop and nurture elite talent.

Steve O’Keefe excelled when playing for the club, and represented Australia in 6 more test matches.

Jackson Bird also flew the Manly Colours in an additional 3 test matches for Australia.

Jay Lenton represented NSW in the Sheffield Shield and had an excellent debut in the BBL with the Sydney Thunder.

Aiden Bariol, Jack Edwards and Isaiah Vumbaca represented NSW U/17, with Jack going further to play for the Australian U/17’s. Continuing his fine form he was selected in the Australian U/19’s.

Oliver Davies played for the Australian U/16 side.

Ben Watts and Jake Osborne, two of our Green Shield players, represented NSW U/15’s.

Shawn Bradstreet was the Sydney Thunder assistant coach, and assistant coach for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan T-20 league.

Bob Rollins was honoured by NSW Sport , receiving the Distinguished Long Service Award to cricket

Our coaching staff and structure is regarded as the best in Sydney Premier Grade Cricket, and all are to be congratulated on their dedication and excellence during the season. A great group headed by Shawn and Phil Marks , including Tim Cruickshank , Bob Rollins , Dave Gainsford , Roy Vumbaca , Gavin Fletcher and Dave Gardiner Chris Hynes again was at the helm directing selections, blending youth with experience and supporting all our captains. Along with our two new captains in Green Shield and PG’s , Jack Ritchie took on the role captaining 2nd grade, leading them back to the finals and winning the Captain of the Year award. All our captains are dedicated and tireless. It is remarkable the amount of work they do off the pitch, and the expectation on them when playing is considerable. The club can be very proud of the leadership of this group. Our Club Captains worked tirelessly and at times were an inspiration - well done Billy D’Arcy and Matt White. Our Pathway program is exceptional and continues to develop players for our grade club and Warringah Cricket Club - our sister club in the

Shires competition. The program is extremely well run by our pathway executive group. Casting an eye towards the future, the following is a summary of the Manly Warringah Junior rep team performances in 2016/17. • 6 teams were entered in the DCA boy’s competition. 5 were finalists • 6 IDCA boy’s teams excelled – winning three premierships and the overall Presidents Cup • 2 teams were entered in the DCA girl’s competition for the first time, and performed admirably. MWDCC intends building on this foundation entering a women’s Brewer Shield (U/17) side in the 2017/18 grade competition. Eighty Four players donned the Waratah’s cap in 2016/17. Eight of these players qualified for their official MWDCC playing number, and we had three players earn their Baggy Blue debuting in first grade. The new playing numbers are listed below. Our volunteers are the core of the club. Simply, we would not function without their contributions. • Our scorers – Geoff Rogers, Gordon Currie, Don Sellin and Langdon Gould. • Our Team Managers – Michael Shepherd (Juice), Will Harding and Dave Gardiner.

• Our Ground Managers Todd Harper and Al Wright. • Our communications group – run by the players, headed by Joel Mason and Sam Weber. Well done to all of you on exceptional work. • Ian Bird for all the great photographs. • Ted Lindsay for helping in our community events. This is to name but a few. Thank you to every one of the vast number of people who gave up their time. It has been a pleasure to serve on our board for another season, and I would like to thank every member for the contribution of countless hours dedicated to successfully running the club. Frase, another academy award winning performance as leader, and special mention to Clubman of the Year – Scott McLachlan, a very worthy recipient. My final applause goes to Joel Mason, voted in as a Life Member of MWDCC. This honor is richly deserved for all the hard work Joel has contributed over a long career with the club, on and off the field. Steve Beatty Honorary Secretary 2016/17

Joel Mason became a Life Member of the Manly Warringah District Club (MWDCC) on the 20th May 2017, becoming MWDCC’s 49th Life Member in our 139 year history. Joel joined the Club as a 15 year old playing Green Shield in 1997. He made his 5th grade debut that same season. Over the 20 years of playing with MWDCC, Joel was a top order batsman who accumulated 5,522 runs including 4 centuries and 23 half centuries with a highest score of 150. Joel still plays the occasional game to this present day. Whilst a Premiership escaped Joel, he did play in two Grand Finals and was a part of five Club Championship wins. Joel’s achievements off the field are equally as impressive. Joel's first role off the field was Club Captain during the 2007/08 season and he quickly showed signs of being a leader. Joel now holds a position on the Executive Board of MWDCC. His roles have included the management of Social Media within the Club where we are now considered the digital leaders amongst the SCA. Joel is also Sponsorship Manager and has done a great job sourcing and servicing the Club’s sponsor partners. Joel's passion and enthusiasm for the Club is of the highest order and is something that is admired by everyone at MWDCC. Joel is highly respected by not only the playing group, but also those in the wider Manly Warringah Cricket Community. He is a very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

This season started with it challenges with Manly Oval out of Action for the first few months of the season and our top grades starting at an under par Grahams Reserve. We also had issues with the turf practice wickets at our training facilities and we didn’t get to use them until well into the season. To the clubs credit we all rallied and got on with the job and got stuck into the season with a great attitude. A huge thanks to Gene Ngamu and Green Options for the terrific work to get all our facilities up to standard so quickly after taking over the grounds. Grahams Reserve after Xmas was a picture and the best it’s been for many a decade. Our players went through a very hard preseason that had included two months of hard yards at chocolate box gym in which the boys worked hard together as a group and bonded beautifully as a club. To add to that we had identified that we needed to improve our fielding and the boys responded by jumping into the fielding sessions which were run professionally by our new recruit and addition to our coaching staff Roy Vumbaca and our club stalwart Dave Gardner. I believe the preseason set us up nicely for a big season. We were lucky to have an excellent coaching panel and it had a familiar look to the previous season with the only change to our structure being the addition of Roy. Phil Marks was once again the other head coach at the club and had a big role in developing our newly groomed first graders Joe Graham, Jake Carden and Jack Edwards. I believe there transition into first grade cricket was made so much easier with having such a seasoned Campaigner like Skid around and nurturing them every step of the way. I know it was a proud moment for Skid when Joe Graham made his First Grade debut as a spinner. 2 years earlier he had seen the promise with Joe mucking around in the nets with his off spin. A lot of

hard work and dedication paid off and it was great to see Joe take 7 wickets on debut. I’d also like to thank Skid for stepping up to the plate over the couple of months when I was away with my commitments with Sydney Thunder and Lahore Qalandars this season. Tim Cruickshank did another great job with the PGs side and was unlucky to not progress deeper into the final series with his side. His relationship and mentor role that he had with the skipper Sam Gainsford played a huge role in Sam leading from the front and they were a great package together. Tim also played a big role in the preseason running batting sessions for the batters that had them all heading into the season in good nick. Bobby Rollins did some amazing work again with our batsman. Starting with the batting sessions that he ran with Tim Cruickshank in preseason. Bobby continues to work hard on all our batsman’s techniques and with his subtle advice has had great results with all our players ranging from our seasoned first graders right down to our young juniors coming into grade cricket. Bobby was regularly seen around the grounds watching his boys out in the middle and felt every one of their ups and downs throughout the season. One thing I do know is that Bobby was very happy with the progress and work that some of our tail enders made with him this year and it was great to see the like of Josh Wigney and Sam Alexander improve so much with the bat. Gavin Fletcher (Fast Bowling) and Steve Whitfield (Spin Bowling) both backed up again this year and continued to mentor our bowlers in the club. Both Our bowling groups are blessed to have such wonderful coaches with so much experience. AS mentioned earlier we were lucky to have Roy Vumbaca and Dave Gardner looking after our fielding this year. I know the playing group loved the variations in drills and both coaches enthusiasm at training. I also believe playing a role in the game day

warm ups helped the players prepare as well as any other teams around. Last but not least I would like to acknowledge the great work by Alan Mantle (CNSW) and thank him for his continued support of all our players. The mental side of cricket is huge and Alan is the best in the business. On the field we showed a lot of promise but didn’t quite nail the season in any grades. 2nd grade, 4th Grade and PGS all making the finals and bowing out in the first week. Yes weather played a part but we just didn’t nail it and hopefully we can all learn from this year’s experiences. First grade missed out on finals in all three competitions, I know skipper Adam Crosthwaite was disappointed to miss the finals but I believe the platform has been laid for this coming season. Crossy really backed our young players coming into 1s and the club will see the rewards in the coming seasons. We did have our challenges this year with three of our fast bowlers out for most of the season due to injury, But there was plenty of positives with youngsters Joe Graham, Jake Carden and Jake Edwards all making their debuts in First grade. Our Batsman scored some brilliant hundreds throughout the season, but mixed it with horrible collapses and the lack of consistency really hurt us. I do think the squad will be better for the year we had and hope it can be a driving force behind us working hard to play in finals cricket again after not making the finals for the last two years. Second grade had a very good season under new skipper Jack Ritchie. This side showed so much promise and made huge improvements throughout the season. Unfortunately the weather got the better of us in the Quarter Final but the ground work for next season and the development of our young stars coming through was there for all to see. Third grade side started the season well under skipper Warren Evans on the back of some very good individual performances. Unfortunately the season did fall away as the year went on with the side not really playing to its potential and it showed with the side finishing 7th.

Fourth grade had another solid season making the finals, but were knocked out in week one without a ball being bowled. The side was on the rise as the season progressed and Skipper Max Burgess can be proud of what the side achieved. Fifth Grade was again Captained by former NSW second eleven player Simon Waddington. Our kids are very lucky to have been led by such a great bloke and also to have a Captain that has always looked after the players with the clubs long term goals in mind. We finished the Club Championships placed 6th finishing 139 points behind first placed Northern Districts. When you consider that 120 points is a full round of wins across the 5 grades it shows we were close. I believe if we can improve as a club by 10% this coming season we will be right in the mix again next season. We do pride ourselves on the Club Championship and it’s defiantly something we will be focused on again next year. Individual performances were strong again, particularly with the bat and as a club we managed to score a total of 18 centuries. In the bowling department we took five wickets in an innings on 23 Occasions. To all our support staff including Alan Wright, Todd Harper, Michael Shepheard, Will Harding and Tom Kelly thanks sincerely for all your assistance at training and at the games, the players and coaching staff love having you guys around. To Chris Hynes our Chairman of Selectors, Thanks again for all your hard work. We all appreciate the time and effort you put in. To all of our captains, thank you for all your hard work this season it’s been enjoyable working with you all. Finally to our board, thank you for your support again this season. It’s great to work with such a well organised and motivated group. Shawn Bradstreet Head Coach 2016/17

Congratulations this year goes to Sydney University for taking out the First Grade competition, Penrith for winning the One day competition and Northern Districts for winning the T20. All three of these clubs deserve the accolades of a great season. A year that we battled and got close but unfortunately a year with no finals. In saying this I still strongly believe this was a successful season. If you take key fast bowlers out of any side in the competition you could expect to struggle. This was a big task and one that our guys stood up to. For the second year in a row we went into the last game of the season with a chance to make finals. Again we fell short but the boys gave an outstanding effort all season. We learnt to fight and have played some youth in first grade which will only make things brighter for the Manly cricket future. I still strongly believe the club and this first grade side are heading in the right direction and in the next few seasons will create opportunities for titles. As for our Players we had some excellent individual performances, seasons and milestones. James Crosthwaite A very nice year by James this season including two brilliant hundreds of varying speeds. 195 against North Sydney where James batted 2 and a half sessions and facing 230 odd balls. Followed up a week later by with a brutal display of 139 off 71 balls against UNSW in the T20 competition. James scored the most runs in first grade and when he gets himself in he is as dominant as anyone. We all still believe there is opportunity for higher honours for James and I hope he continues his Dominance for Manly for years to come. Well done on a big year James and we all hope to see you pass 1000 runs in a season in the coming years.

Logan Weston Logan's first year back at the club has seen him fight very hard to get back into the first grade side. He has had to work hard and showed great commitment and fight to be dropped back to 2nds and fight hard to get back into first grade through excellent performances. To finish the year as the opening batsmen in first grade is a huge achievement. Well done Logan and I hope you keep working hard to make that spot your own for many years to come. Jarrod Rawlings Jarrod had an outstanding start to the season with the highlight an amazing 154 off 291 balls against Sutherland helping the team to 400. A 600 run season is excellent and to average over 40 is a brilliant season across first and second grade. The challenge to Jarrod is to keep working hard and to nail down the first grade position with consistent scores. To be the rock of this club at the top of the order for years to come should be the focus moving forward. Well done Jarrod on great season. Jay Lenton Jay had a very impressive season as he continues to push to be the NSW number 1 keeper. A strong season for Manly with over 600 runs, this to add with his NSW second XI runs and his stint in Green with the Sydney Thunder made everyone at the club very proud. I know everyone involved with Manly would agree how comfortable Jay looked at Big Bash level and we hope it continues for many years. Jay is a leader both on and off the field with Manly and his 100 against Illawarra was a highlight as he systematically destroyed them. Well done Jay on another successful season, keep putting in the yards as they pay off in the end. Ahillen Beadle The great AB, what a year again... Batting average of 51.55 and a bowling average of 18 is an outstanding

season in anyone’s books. A brilliant 109 against St George was the batting masterclass we have come to expect from him, then to back it up with 5/64 in the same game is another level entirely. AB played varying roles throughout the year but no matter what he was doing, like always, he did it with class. It’s such a luxury that we at Manly have become used to having a class act like AB at our club. Every one of us watch in awe when AB gets going and we hope it continues for many more years at Manly Oval. Cameron Merchant We asked Cameron to play a senior role to anchor our batting line up and he did it perfectly. Always putting the team’s needs in front of his own and adapting his game for what was needed. It’s a very difficult position to master and Nappa has found a way to do it. Another 100 against Sydney putting him in reaching distance of the most all-time 100's for the club. Cameron stepped in as Captain over the season and showed his leadership and the respect the side and the club has for him is enormous. Well done Cameron on another stellar season. Ryan Farrell Ryan took an opportunity thrown at him this season against Parramatta to open the batting against a good attack and he made the most of it, registering his first 1st Grade 100. It was a moment no one playing that day will forget in a hurry. I have no doubt it’s the first of many for Ryan as he turns himself into a consistent match winner. Ryan's improvement and willingness to learn has been outstanding over the season and I have no doubt that it’s going to be the making of a very successful career. Ryan was our best fielder in the first grade set up and his understanding of his bowling has the potential to turn Ryan into a very good 3 dimensional player. Well done on an excellent season Ryan keep working on every part of your game. Jack Edwards Jack has played a lot of cricket this season and to see what he has done at an underage representative level for both NSW and Australia has been very exciting to watch for all involved in cricket at Manly. It is a very exciting time anytime you see a young man at 16 make his first grade debut. Jack showed great signs that we have a player for the future, he had glimpses where we saw just how good he was with both bat and ball. The challenge for Jack moving forward is to

stay focused and disciplined with his game to turn himself from a dominant junior to a serious senior cricketer. This takes time and at 17 years old Jack has this on his side. A big pre-season ahead for you Jack keep pushing yourself to the maximum. Taylor Beatty Taylor competed as hard as anyone this year and had to fill roles that he wasn't accustomed to at first grade level. Often taking the new ball and being asked to attack without leaking too many runs. A difficult task and one that Taylor took head on. Taylor bowled on flat wickets against the best batters in the state and did an excellent job. Taylors batting really started to come good at the back end of the year. With a continued focus on all aspects of his game, Taylor can push for the all-round tag that we all know he can be in first grade. Michael Visser Viss was asked to lead the attack for the majority of the year and he competed and bowled beautifully. Without express pace, on flat wickets against the best batters in the state Viss kept us competitive. His ability to bowl long spells and to build pressure was outstanding. Viss was dropped back to 2nd grade throughout the season and his answer was to take it on the chin and perform. He did just that dominating 2nd grade and earned his spot back. It showed his character, his determination and what makes him so great for this team. Well done Viss on another great year. Joe Graham Joey making his debut and keeping his spot through his performances was perhaps our best story of the year. To debut against Sutherland and to bowl us to a win on a good wicket was outstanding. To take the responsibility in his first game and to be trusted to bowl at the death in a tight contest is something we will all remember. Joey bowled 34.2 overs and took 7/148 on debut to win the game by 13 runs. It was the best debut I have seen and one of the greatest debuts in Manly Cricket history along with Sydney grade cricket history. Joey grew in confidence and the way he thinks about his bowling is exciting for the future. Well done Joey, keep working hard and learning. Jake Carden Another exciting 1st Grade debut season for the club. Jake came into the team after consistent

performances in 2nd grade, with a great ability to build pressure with the ball. As a youngster Jake’s knowledge of his game and his plans are outstanding. He knows what he can do and he does it for long periods. It has been a great challenge for Jake taking his game up a level and he has done extremely well. Jake has a big challenge moving forward to turn himself into a 3 dimensional first grade player. His batting is coming along very well and he hits the ball as clean as anyone. The key for Jake is to continue to put time and effort into all 3 aspects of his game to be consistent at first grade level. Well done Jake, keep working hard and putting in the effort. Matty White Matty White was asked to carry the load in regards to the fast bowling throughout the year. He bowled aggressively and fast which made him a handful for the opposition. His white ball cricket was sensational for us at times throughout the year and his death bowling was key in big moments. Matt bounced between 1st grade and 2nd grade always putting the club above himself. It's a hard job when you are asked to chop and change throughout the year between teams but his energy and competitiveness was always huge in any team he played. He wears his heart on his sleeve and bleeds blue for the club. As club captain he was excellent and his efforts to bowl fast for long periods of time were not lost on his teammates. Well done mate on a big year, keep pushing to do what you want to do with your cricket. Matt Alexander Although lost out to injury at the back end of the season Matty A had a big impact when he played. For the second year in a row, his T20 numbers were outstanding both for our team and within the SCA. Unfortunately injury hit and Matt missed the second half of the season. We all look forward to a fit and firing Matty A to return. Matt needs to keep hitting balls and working on his batting as his hitting is as clean as anyone's. Good luck Matt on the recovery and can't wait to see you back and firing. Sam Gainsford Sammy Gainsford has been a feature over the last few seasons in our one day and T20 sides. His ability to bat, bowl and field makes him the perfect utility in one day cricket. The challenge for Sam is to force his way into first grade permanently with strong performances and consistency. The way he led the

PGs side this year showed his leadership abilities. The responsibility he took with that team showed the club that we have a special player on our hands. In the back end of the season Sam stepped up the order in second grade and continues to put pressure on the first grade squad in 2 day cricket. Keep working on every part of your game Sam and the reward will come. Steve O’Keefe Throughout the season we had an injection from Stephen O'Keefe, which we always enjoy. S’OK had a great season in NSW colours and his inclusion in the test squads is a huge buzz for all involved at the club. When SOK decided to pull out of the big bash and concentrate on red ball cricket for the summer Manly were huge winners. His bowling performance against Campbelltown is now Manly history. SOK took 9/54 off 30 overs and took the catch to dismiss the only batter he didn't get out. Well done on another successful season SOK, we all love when you put on a Manly hat. We have two great men who have been hit with injuries that ruined their seasons. Two guys who are a big part of this club and the first grade side, Nick McLachlan and Mickey Edwards. Injuries happen to fast bowlers and that is always the case but for Mickey it’s his 2nd year in a row where injury has taken him down. As for Nick missing the whole year with an elbow injury is horrible for both guys. The way they have carried themselves through the season is testament to them as individuals. Both playing lower grades through the season to assist and work on their batting was great to see. We look forward to having them both back and fit in the coming seasons. To our coaching staff Shawn and Phil thank you so much for the year. It was a huge thrill for the playing group when Shawn went to the Pakistan Premier League, we always knew he was a special coach and now world cricket is seeing this. Well done coach. In Shawn's absence it was outstanding to have a coach of the caliber of Skid to take over the head coaching responsibilities. Thank you and well done Skid. We have amazing support staff and assistant coaches that it makes life very easy getting to training and games and things always being under control. The whole coaching staff are outstanding people who have so much knowledge on the game. As a playing group we never take this for granted and we understand how

lucky we are to have the people who are around for us. A huge thank you to our coaches you guys are all outstanding. To Andrew Fraser and the board thank you all for the work that you have done for the club and for this side. The Manly cricket club is in amazing hands with the board that we have. Thank you from all of our players for the work that you guys put in to making it so enjoyable to come to cricket and play the game we love. Frase you have been a 'Lion' and like always and

we appreciate the work and time you put in year after year. Enjoy the off season and we will see you back next year ready to fight and win for this great club. Go Manly. Adam Crosthwaite 1st grade captain 2016/17

Congratulations to Sydney Cricket Club on winning the 2nd grade competition. They were minor premiers by a long way and deserved their victory. Well done. Overall Manly 2nd Grade had a successful season finishing the regular season in 5th place before being knocked out in the quarter finals after a hard-fought draw with UNSW. This was a big improvement on the previous season where we finished well back in 12th place and gives the team a good base to build from next year. It was great to usher in so many 2nd grade debutants this season such as Billy Darcy, Ollie Davies, Josh Wigney and Ryan Bishop Perrett. Quite a few players who had floated between 2’s and 3’s over the last few seasons such as Sam Gainsford, Aiden Bariol, Dylan Marshall and Jack Edwards cemented their spot in 2’s and lastly it was fantastic to see players such as Jarrod Rawlings, Joe Graham and Jake Carden all have outstanding success in 1st grade after starting the year in 2nd grade. Whist winning the premiership is a main aim of 2nd grade, it is also important we are preparing players for the rigors of 1st grade and their success in the top grade demonstrates we are on the right track. There are many thankyous to make to our amazing volunteers who make my job so much easier and ensure our Saturdays run like a well-oiled machine. Firstly, to our brilliant scorer Gordon Currie – thank you so much for your time and effort in scoring this year. Your organisation and experience was a big help to myself as a 1st year captain and the boys very much enjoyed your company. Also to our big-hearted manager Will Harding – your enthusiasm is infectious and you bring such a positive energy to the group. Thank you for all your efforts and for keeping the team so entertained and well hydrated! Thank you and well done to Frase and his board for doing such a great job running the club. A particularly

big thank you to Steve Beatty, Scott McLachlan and Todd Harper for their work during home matches, from organising drinks to locking up, putting out tea and chairing umpires meetings – a lot of behind the scenes work which is appreciated by all the players. Thank you to all the coaching staff – the best in Sydney. I was very lucky to have two former 1st grade skippers in Phil Marks and Shawn Bradstreet to bounce ideas off and lean on for advice – thank you for all your support. Thank you to David Gardner and Roy Vumbaca for all their help in running fielding drills at training and for helping with the 2nd grade warm ups so often – much appreciated. Thank you to all the specialist coaches for their work throughout the season with the players. Lastly, thank you to David Gainsford for his help whilst on the coaching staff in the absence of Shawn for a few weeks and for being a great general sounding board for me. Thank you to Chairman of selectors Chris Hynes for all his work. A lot of phone calls, emails and conversations at training but without him doing such a great job the club would not run anywhere near as efficiently as what it does. A short note about all the players that played 2nd grade this year. Billy D’Arcy This was Billy’s first season of second grade and he acquitted himself very well. 408 runs @ 31 in 2nd grade is a solid season. Batting in the toughest position in the order Billy had a big start to the season in 3’s and quickly made his mark in 2’s with back to back centuries – the knock against North Sydney in particular was in my opinion the best innings in 2’s all season. His form tailed off a bit towards the back end of the season but he has clearly shown he is capable of being a big run scorer in 2’s and can push to play 1’s. Billy also did an outstanding job as club captain and is the heart and soul of this club. Jarrod Rawlings

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

Jarrod is too good for 2nd grade however we were lucky to have his services on quite a few occasions this season. Played some excellent knocks and improved his limited over batting immensely – his 70 against Wests a perfect example of this. Always puts a big price on his wicket and is a guy everyone loves to have in the team. Logan Weston It was fantastic to have Logan back playing for Manly after a stint in the UK. He showed he is a dominant 2nd grader with scores of 100*, 99* and 89* throughout the season. He didn’t quite hit his straps in 1’s but will no doubt be better for the experience. Has a great pair of hands and is a tough competitor. Jack Edwards I don’t think we have seen the best of Jack at Manly yet. However, as an extremely dominant junior player and with raw potential for all to see, I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before he starts dominating in the top two grades. His knock of 50 odd in Rd 1 against Easts demonstrated his ability to get on top of attacks and his spell of bowling in the QF against UNSW was hostile. Tom Kaye Tom was our leading run scorer this season (412) and equal leading wicket taker (18) – an outstanding achievement. He has now had two solid seasons with the bat in a row – all that is missing is more big scores of 70+ that will catch the eye of selectors. It was fantastic to see his bowling develop so much this year – he bowls with beautiful shape and is always very consistent and reliable. There is no reason he can’t break into 1st grade as a genuine all-rounder in the future. Sam Gainsford Sam significantly improved his all round game this season. His bowling developed to the point that he was one of our most consistent wicket takers (15 wickets @ 21) and he now has a 2nd grade 5 wicket haul to his name. He played some good knocks with the bat and still has plenty of room left for improvement. A key for Sam will be reducing the ‘brain explosions’ he has with the bat and keeping the ball along the ground more often – if he masters these two things there is no reason he can’t be a successful all-rounder batting in the top 6. Sam was a huge support to me as skipper and someone that

played a huge part in creating our awesome team spirit – thanks mate. Aiden Bariol Aiden forced his way into 2nd grade through some massive run scoring early in the season in 3’s and Poidevin-Gray. We didn’t quite see the best of Aiden with the bat however his knocks against Norths, Wests and the QF against UNSW showed his potential. Behind the stumps he was brilliant with some of his stumpings off Sam Gainsford at a first-class level. Aiden is also constantly thinking about the game behind the stumps and will make a good skipper down the track. Andrew Jamieson Jamo was a fantastic acquisition for the Manly club this year. He fitted in like a glove and brought that hard-nosed Bankstown attitude with him. It was a big year for Jamo off the field with getting married, honeymoons, change of jobs and building a house, so as a result he struggled to string matches together and we probably didn’t quite see the best of him. Was always solid with the ball though and was a leader among our team. As an experienced captain he was a great help to me also – thanks mate! Dylan Marshall After a slow start to the pre-season Dylan forced his way into 2’s after a few rounds and went on to be our equal leading wicket taker (18 wickets @ 22) demonstrating quickly why he has been a dominant 2nd grader for so long. Bowls with beautiful control and shape and troubled so many batsmen. Dylan played such a big part in our success this year – I would love nothing more than to see him have a massive pre-season, get himself into shape and push to play 1’s which is where he truly belongs. Matt White We didn’t see the best of Whitey in 2nd grade this year as work commitments often prevented him from training 2 days a week. Always gave his all but it wasn’t until the QF that he hit his straps. His spell that day proves that when he gets it right he is good enough to dominate 2’s. Jake Carden It was great to see Jake make the jump to first grade after some super consistent performances with the ball early in the season. Jake bowls with a lot of

patience and consistently builds pressure – attributes that will result in success no matter the level you play. He didn’t quite score the runs he was hoping to with the bat and will need to continue to work hard on his batting to become a genuine all-rounder. Jake has a big future ahead of him but will need to make sure he is doing the little 1% things such as looking after his body to get the most out of his ability. Josh Wigney Wiggers was another who made the jump up to 2nd grade this season after some consistent results in 3’s. He more than held his own (12 wickets @ 20) and produced some excellent spells with his effort against Sydney on the second morning a highlight. Was unluckily dropped towards the end of the season but with a big pre-season behind him and having had a good taste of 2’s now I have no doubt he will be an integral part of the team next season. Also, a better team man you will not find. Ollie Davies Ollie was another 2nd grade debutant this season after some dominant performances in 3rd grade. Only batted 3 times but showed his potential with a score of 44 and a 30* to get us home in a close one which also demonstrated his calmness under pressure. An excellent fielder and handy offie, I’m sure Ollie will play a much bigger part in 2’s next season with this experience behind him. Jordan Daly After being a dominant player in 3’s for the past couple of season Jordan played quite a few games in

2’s this year but wasn’t quite able to make a big score and nail down a spot in the side. Looked great in his 20 odd out at Fairfield and was a fantastic asset in the field – his run out against Campbelltown was a match changer. A great team man who gives his all each Saturday. A big thank you for the efforts of the following players who also played a part in our season – Mickey Edwards, Taylor Beatty, Michael Visser, Ryan Bishop Perrett, Sam Webber, Sam Alexander, Matt Alexander. Lastly, I also want to thank my dad Mike for his help during the year – it was great to talk tactics at lunchtime most games. Also to my girlfriend Elle who now knows way more about grade cricket than she ever thought she would (probably more than she wants to know) - thank you for your support of my cricket and taking on the captaincy. It felt like the beginning of a new era in the Manly 1st/2nd grade squad this season with the introduction of so many young players into 2nd grade. If we can all stay together and work hard over the next 10 years there is no doubt we can achieve some really special things for the club we love so much. Until next year, Jack Ritchie 2nd Grade Captain 2016/17

Congratulations to Northern District for winning the premiership in such convincing style this season. Manly unfortunately fell a game short of making the finals, finishing up in 7th spot. If I was told this after winning 5 of our first 6 games I would have scoffed but we made tough work of the remaining nine games, winning just three of them and to be honest they were fairly scrappy, unconvincing wins. Personnel changes made things tough for us. The opening rounds saw the likes of Aidan Baker, Ross Trewartha, Luke Edgell, Bill D’Arcy, Aiden Bariol, Ollie Davies and Josh Wigney all playing and all in form and all too good for 3rd grade but a run of injuries and retirements saw big changes and we lost our way somewhat. A quick glimpse at the batting stats paints the picture for us. Other than the aforementioned players who we didn’t see after Rd 6 we really struggled to find any consistency throughout our order. Occasionally we got off to solid starts only for the middle and lower order to fail, sometimes the lower order dug us out of trouble but rarely did #4-7 make any significant contributions. It was great to see some of the young guys make a deep impression in those early rounds. Aiden Bariol came back a new player. From the first ball that he pumped through the covers he looked a cut above and it was fantastic to see him score a century v Sutherland and to make consistent contributions in most of his innings. Ollie Davies is another youngster who showed a lot of class and power. If he can get past the first few balls he tended to deliver hard hitting innings. His century v North Sydney was an exhibition of clean hitting rarely seen at this level. His desire to feel bat on ball brought him undone a couple of times early and if he can work on this aspect he’ll be a heavy, entertaining scorer for the club.

What the stats won’t show is our dropped catches. Our slips cordon dropped catches regularly throughout the season and this cost us dearly in a number of games. Our bowlers tended to create plenty of opportunities but to see them frequently go to ground was disappointing and made our task too difficult especially when we often did not have a lot of runs to play with. Our bowling was good with very few instances where the opposition got on top of us. More will be said in the player reviews below but Ryan Bishop Perret really stepped up this year and was unlucky to not finish with better numbers as he had a number of dropped catches. Like last season Ryan finished strongly and he should be knocking on 2nd grade’s door soon. Our squad included the following players:- Will Wolter Will is an aggressive opening bat who often found the middle of the bat early. Perhaps ironically Will’s top score was 95 v Sutherland in a game where he didn’t find the middle of the bat until he was in the 80s. On other occasions Will struck the ball beautifully only to go a bit too hard at it and score in that frustrating 20-50 range. If he can temper his game a bit and get used to staying in for long periods he’ll do even better. Sam Webber Sam was unlucky to be dropped from 2nds but he hid any disappointment and got on with it. He played some useful knocks for us, in particular a gritty, disciplined innings to help us avoid an outright loss v Sydney and in the last game of the year where we were chasing an improbable finals spot Sam showed us a different version of himself in an innings displaying aggression, hard hitting and great foot movement. Hope he remembers the hows and whys of this innings and starts next season like this. His keeping was as usual solid and he brought a level head to proceedings which was greatly appreciated.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

Luke Edgell Bomber played a handful of games, only really hitting his straps once v Parramatta for a controlled 50. His bowling was at times exceptional and he brings an X factor in all games, just ask Sydney. James Crombie Jimmy’s technique held a few innings of ours together, more than once going in at #4 and to be one of the last wickets to fall in a small team total. He needs to maybe look to rotate the strike a little more, maybe bring an extra punch into his stroke play and I’m sure he’ll start scoring freely at this level. He has excellent hands in the field and his bowling was accurate and reliable. Ollie Davies As mentioned above Ollie saw a bit of 3rd grade, scoring heavily at times to average 40. Loves batting maybe too much. Needs to find a way to stop going too hard too early which he tends to do when he knows he can dominate an attack. Give yourself 10 balls to get set. Looks like a useful off spinner as well so future captains, don’t forget that. Ed Hole Ed looks like a useful player but struggled to find his feet at this level. He showed what he could do v Parramatta where he was busily winning the game for us before being run out and then the following round he eked out a valuable 24no to ensure a tight win. Other than that Ed went cheaply, often to harmless looking off spinners. His technique became busy and complicated as the year wore on so the sooner he can simplify things the better. Pretty much the same with his bowling – can look great at times, hitting a good full length only to follow up with some loose stuff. Keep working on your bowling though Ed, when you get it right you can make some useful contributions. Ash Virdi Started the year a little slowly but finished nicely. A very clean hitter of the ball who can play incredible shots. On a couple of occasions Ash saved us from embarrassment, namely an excellent 62no v CC and a 40 v St George. When he gets set the runs flow quickly as he brings a lot of energy to the crease. Ash’s bowling over the years has faded due to injury and he is now keen to kick start his leg spinning. Whilst he bowls a few loose ones each over he can also bowl some beauties as evidenced by his late wickets v Sutherland when things were getting tight.

Jordan Daly Jordan moved quickly into 2nd grade after scoring heavily in rd 1 and when he came back to 3rds he again batted well with another half century v Norths. Only played a few games all up in 3rds and was consistent. Again he led the way behind the stumps with his encouragement. Zac Trewartha Zac had a season he’d rather forget. Unsure what went wrong for him this year, as he is definitely a much better player than what we saw. Hit the ball well Round 1 but after that it was a long season for him but he stayed upbeat and I hope he reverses his performances next year. Aiden Bariol Started the year prolifically in 3rds and deservedly went to 2nds. As mentioned earlier he looked a different player this year and his dominating half century v Penrith on a fresh pitch where nobody else could put bat on ball was the best I’ve seen him bat. He threw it away that day but quickly learnt from it to score his maiden grade century the following game V Sutherland in another superior display. His keeping was up a level as well and I expect Aiden to be a heavy scorer in 2nds next year. Ryan Bishop Perret Ryan’s end of season figures do not do him justice. He bowled exceptionally well in the latter part of the season and the number of dropped catches in the first half had an impact on his confidence possibly. I was surprised he didn’t have some success in 2nd grade in the games he had - maybe he gets a bit anxious. The way he bowled v Hawkesbury in the last round was eye opening – good pace and without a doubt should trouble 2nd graders. Sam Alexander Sam bowled some quality spells this year and rightfully played some 2nd grade. His 19 wickets came at a good strike rate as well at 28. His spell v Randy Petes was as good as it was funny. Probably the only time 15 people on a cricket field had a simultaneous laugh after a hat-trick ball was dropped. Could only happen with Sam! He took two 5fa’s and when he gets on a roll he really does land it nicely. His batting showed obvious improvement and he steered us home in the last round to ensure 6 points.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

Josh Wigney Wiggers started slowly but bowled very aggressively in rd 3 to gain promotion to 2nd grade. He had two more games for us in 3rds at various times and both times took wickets. I hope not to see much of Josh in 3s again. He leads the way in the field for enthusiasm, regardless of how he was going and that is something everybody should strive for. Warren Evans I bowled pretty tight lines and a particular technical observation from Skid got me back on path. Having Fletch around to chat to in the nets ironed out other little issues creeping in as well. Having Friday nets with Todd Harper also helped as it gave me confidence. Unhappy with my batting though, however resumed my masterclasses with Bobby Rollins in the latter half and was able to partner up with Ash a couple of times to steer us to competitive totals. Brad Wilson It’s great to have Brad around again and he started the season strongly in 4s and 5s and played a good portion of the season in 3rds where he bowled some good spells and, like Ryan, was often unlucky. He’ll be a better bowler once he lifts his body language a bit as he tended to let everybody know when he wasn’t feeling on top of things. Always trying, always suggesting things Brad was an energetic member of this side. His batting at times looks excellent, his main weakness being his kicking game which was pathetic. We had a number of other blokes come through the side during the season and they all made good

contributions including Dan McKenna, Dom Wheeler, Izzy Vumbaca, Dylan Marshall, James Boyer, Bill D’Arcy, Ben Falconer, Adam Gummer, Mickey Edwards along with older hands like Ross Trewartha, Tim Cruickshank and Aiden Baker. A quality line up right there so it is still with some surprise 3rds did not finish the season in a better position. As usual the coaching staff were excellent. Skid led the way in Shawn’s absences and to have the likes of David Gainsford, Roy Vumbacca and David Gardner run fielding sessions gave the club a real professional look. Massive thanks also to Gavin Fletcher, Steve Whitfield and Bobby Rollins for the time and expertise they provide. Even after 30+ years I am still picking things up from these blokes. The work of Todd Harper needs to be acknowledged. Todd had the nets running smoothly in his laid back way and the amount of stuff he does behind the scenes, as any board member knows about and has personally experienced, is greatly appreciated. Many thanks for the Friday hits and your unique sense of humour. The board again shone with the players having very few things to whinge about. Many thanks to the likes of Steve, Gains, Frase and Joel for the hours you all put in. Looking forward to next season. Warren Evans 2016/17 Third Grade Captain

First off I would like to congratulate Sydney Cricket Club on winning The Reid cup for season 2016/17, well deserved. When reflecting back on the season we had it is very easy to remember the frustration we had at season’s end. Still kicking ourselves on the missed opportunities. Although when I take a step back away from the season I take away the amount of growth the team had as both as individuals and as a unit. Yes, we will remember Dan McKenna’s swash-buckling 100 or Brad Wilson’s 5 wicket haul that included a hat trick. But I will remember the joy on everyone’s faces when Nick McLachlan and Adam Gummer did the vital maths to work out we had made the finals. The return of Nick to lower grade cricket to assist the development of our long bowling attack, whilst being injured. Ben Falconer proving to everyone he is not just a new ball bowler and the personal growth of Isaiah Vumbaca who became a pivotal player in the second half of the season. A season like fourth grade’s this season can only be as good as the support around it. Much work happens off the field to ensure the right procedures and processes are put in place and I would to thank Andrew Fraser and all the board members for their tireless efforts. To our major sponsor, Travelsim and all our other sponsor I would like to thank you for your support throughout the season. To Roy Vumbaca, Langdon Gould, Dave Gardner, Alan Wright, Steve Beatty, David Gainsford and Todd Harper I would to thank you for your support on game day with scoring, setting up the ground and drinks. To the parents who set up afternoon tea a big thank you for bringing so many smiles to the faces of hungry players. Although the biggest thank you must go to Tom Kelly, who joined the season a bit into the season and was a joy to have around, never I have I ever had the privilege of a team manager in 4th grade but Tom was a step above the rest. To the coaching and selection staff Tim Cruickshank, Bobby Rollins, Dave Gardner, Roy Vumbaca, Chris

Hynes and especially Phil Marks and Shawn Bradstreet a big thank you to the hours and passion you put into training, phone calls and texts during the week, support throughout Saturday meant so much for the team and myself personally that our success can be attributed to your efforts. I would like to thank all the players that played fourth grade this season and for making it so special, I enjoyed playing with each and every one of you. Hope to see everyone next season. Adam Gummer It was fantastic to have Adam in the side again this season. His knowledge of the game is probably the best in the club and was a huge asset for me as captain and it is always good to play with good friends. He is also an absolute legend. Nick McLachlan It was great to have Nick around the team, money can’t buy what he brought to the team this season. His skill, knowledge of the game, hunger to win and pure enjoyment played a role in the team reaching the finals. Hoping this is the last time we see Nick in the lower grades for a while and see him playing down at Manly Oval fully fit. Daniel McKenna Dan showed how dynamic he can be on the cricket field, with his batting coming on leaps and bounds. He was very much a game changer for 4th grade in the lower order and saved the top order’s skin on many times. He was deserving of playing higher grades during the season and we’ll see him playing higher grades in the seasons to come. Will Outred Joined the team during the second half of the season, due to changing his role in the team becoming a steady opening batsman. This was a great change for Will and in the coming seasons, it is a role that he could reach his full potential. Just do not forget about your leg spinners.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

Jacob Graham Jacob became a vital part of the fourth grade team, and has matured as a player. He is always economical with the ball, got us over the line with the bat and always puts the team first. Fantastic to have had played with you and much respect. Ben Falconer Probably not where Ben wanted to be after having a great previous season playing higher grades. However, a season toiling in 4th grade has done his development as an opening bowler the world of good. He was consistently one of our top bowlers week in and out, bowling well with both the new and old ball. I expect to see Ben back to playing higher grades in the seasons to come. Matt Brewster Came into 4th grade at the back end of the season to take the gloves and bat in the top order, after strong performances in 5th grade. Matt has so much talent and will be a great player for Manly in the future and this season was a great learning experience for him. With a disciplined focus and relaxed manner about his game, Matt has the potential to achieve great results. Isaiah Vumbaca A huge season for you Izzy. You came into the season with a lot of expectation of your abilities from yourself and others from the representative honours you achieved. In the second half of the season you showed why you are such a talented cricketer and it was fantastic to see this development. If you keep enjoying your cricket I am predicting a huge season for you. Zach Trewartha Probably not where Zach wanted to be after having a great previous season playing higher grades. However, during anyone’s career we all have a bad season. Everyone in the club knows how much talent

Zach has, and if he can take what he needs from this season to learn from, as well as finding a balance in his life, he will find his form back again. Alex Bain A couple of seasons in 5th grade has proven the key in Alex’s development. Coming into 4th grade a bit into the season, he proved to be a bowler hard to drop, with consistent lines and lengths with a hint of in swing. If Alex remains patient with his development and takes in the advice from the coaching staff and senior players, I can see him proving to be a consistent performer in higher grades. Nick Cohen Came across from shires this season and proved he can easily play higher grades, with an aggressive opening batting style. With minor work on his technique to make it more compact, he can reach his potential. Sam Hole A very classy and smart batsman and good to have him back at the end of the season. Expect to see Sam make a huge impact in the upcoming season. I would also like to say thanks to Ross Trewartha for making himself available, you are always enjoyable to play with, and you contributed to the side’s success this season. As did all the players that played fourth grade this season and I would like to thank you for the season; Dom Wheeler, Jarrod Walter, Sam Alexander, Brad Wilson, Will Akhurst, Will Wolter, Jimmy Crombie, James Boyer, Toby Poole, Jack Pickering and Ned Hole. We may be disappointed in the way our season ended but reflecting on it as a whole it was immensely enjoyable. Max Burgess 4th Grade Captain 2016/17

In many respects, 5th grade experienced a similar season to the last finishing middle of the table in 10th position on 41 points. Only 8 points out of the top six. Well done to minor premiers Gordon and premiers Randwick-Petersham on their success this year. Again, we started the season well winning 4 of the first 6 games but then only won 2 of our last 9 games. In three games we had the opposition 9 wickets down but couldn’t get the last wicket to give us that vital 6-points and add to that three more games that were weather affected with no points awarded. We finished with a very respectable quotient of 1.5976 due do some dominant wins and close losses, and I can’t recall too many large collapses that are quite common in 5th grade. Despite still having a fairly young team, the majority of the team now have 1-2 seasons of grade and shires cricket under their belt and that experience is starting to show. Not just in the consistency of results but also on the field. There was a lot more energy in the field this year and a lot more chat from all around the ground not just 2 or 3 people in previous seasons. I am very grateful for the support I received from Donny ‘Dollars’ Sellin and his assistance with the scoring and stats is always greatly appreciated. He quite often suffers in silence under significant pain and at other times on heavy pain relief medication and his strength and resilience is greatly admired. I thank the board and sponsors for their tireless work in running the club and ensuring our future success. Again, my mid-week commitments meant I couldn’t get to training as much as I would have liked but I know the boys were in excellent hands with our superb coaching staff. I would also like to thank the legion of parents who supported us throughout the year all over Sydney and also for your help at home games with the best 5th grade afternoon teas.

The success and the quality of the players coming into 5th grade is largely thanks to the success of the Pathway Program with Shires which was this year run by Ross Denny and David Gainsford. I would also like to thank Chris Hynse for his tremendous efforts as Chairman of Selectors in a year that seemed to have more than the usual number of injuries and late changes to manage. The following players enjoyed 5 or more games in 5th grade this season. Will Outred Will took a step back this year to concentrate a bit more on his batting and get some experience at the top of the order. He opened the batting for us most of the year and peeled off some great innings including his maiden grade hundred. Will was our most consistent performer and took a leadership role within the squad and did a great job a skipper while I was away. I think he still under-rates his leg-spinners and I should have bowled him a bit more this year. Jonah Anderson Jonah believes he is one of the unluckiest cricketers going around and I am starting to buy in. As a team, we did not drop many catches this year which makes it easier to remember the ones we did and most of them were off Jonah’s bowling. I know this will turn around for him. Again, Jonah wasn’t able to go on with a few starts but did have less opportunities with the bat this year. I know he is capable of turning those starts into match winning scores. Dom Wheeler Dom also gave us some great stability at the top of the order. Coming to us this year after a couple of seasons at Warringah, his discipline and determination were evident. He plays his cricket with a lot of maturity and was a real asset at the top of the order. He also did a good job behind the stumps. As he knows there were a few blemishes occasionally but his work ethic is right up there with anyone.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

Jacob O’Sullivan Jacob had a solid season with a couple of beautiful innings, but also had 4 scores less than 3. He needs to work hard on the early part of his innings and the rest will follow. His medium pacers were again very handy picking up a few key wickets when needed. Nice to see his confidence grow through the season. Michael Counsell Michael was scouted in the local park cricket. Michael worked hard all year bowling some long spells when needed and absolutely ripped through a few teams just like he does in the nets at Graham’s Reserve. However, he had some issues with his run-up and no-balls that started to affect his consistency at times. Continued hard work in the future will pay dividends. Will Akhurst Will had a solid season but we have only just seen a glimpse of his talent. He is improving each year. In 5s he scored a few good 30s and 40s but the big scores will be his next goal. He had more than a few opposition batsmen well and truly on the back foot as he started to hit the deck hard which was great to see. Glynn Archer Glynn was our leading wicket taker in 5th grade this season. When he kept it simple, Glynn was able to build pressure and subsequently took wickets. Early on in the season particularly, he struggled to get his line and length right in his first 2-3 overs but over the season he seemed to find his areas much quicker. Matt Brewster Another young gun to make a debut ton in 5th grade this year. Matt seems to only know one speed and I love watching his positive style of play. I would however like to see a bit more discipline at times, particularly early in his innings so he can get used to the pace of the wicket and conditions. Ben Watts Ben quietly announced himself on the grade cricket seen this year with some more than tidy left arm orthos. Ben has amazing control of his finger spinners for such a tender age which enabled us to set some quite attacking fields. This pressure resulted in wickets for him and his bowling partner. Very limited opportunities with the bat but keep working. Every innings is a chance to work your way up the order.

Jack Pickering Jack had a few conflicting commitments this season with his state and national hockey duties. His appearances in 5th grade this year showed he is ready to make the next step but didn’t quite do enough to cement his spot in 4s. Hayden Brown Hayden is a classic all-rounder but had limited chances to show his full potential with the bat apart from his 49n.o. vs Sutherland. He can swing the ball both ways with his quicker than medium pacers but at times when his length was a bit out. He is more than capable of picking up wickets though and had a fairly healthy strike rate. Lachlan Kerr Lachie’s back injury stopped him from bowling at all this season. He worked hard on his batting and has shown a noticeable improvement and is a good timer of the ball. When he picks up more 1s and 2s in-between boundaries he will see bigger scores. Nick Cohen Nick spent most of the season in 4s and had a reasonable season without setting the world on fire. Nick has a very compact technique and looks every part the opening batsmen he is. I would like to see him playing down the ground a bit more but otherwise his season scorecard shows a lot of starts and no fifties. Something to work on for next season. There were also a numerous players who played less than 5 games in 5th grade this year but still made a valued contribution. These were Abhijeet Virdi, Toby Poole, Ned Hole, Mickey Edwards, Sam Hole, Joel Mason, Alex Bain, Brad Wilson, Tully Moffatt, Jake Osborne, Brynn Mendel, Will Dawes, Todd Harper, Matt White, and Jacob de Angelis. In summary, we played some great cricket this year and dominated some teams including the two eventual grand finalists. Nevertheless, the energy and spirit of the team throughout the year made it a pleasure to be captain and I am very grateful for the effort, support and enthusiasm of the players, coaches, board, sponsors and supporters. Congratulations to everyone for a great season. Simon Waddington 5th Grade Captain 2016/17

This year’s PG’s competition was one of the most enjoyable I have had playing cricket. Not only did we succeed in finishing Minor Premiers of the campaign, but also got to play with a great group of guys and very talented cricketers. What we all wanted this year was to enjoy each other’s company on game day which we did in every game which contributed to our success. We had such a positive team this year which I have captured in the player’s report. Nothing was ever an issue with the boys, whether it was coming to the ground early to set up or staying behind to pack up. Everything we needed to do we approached as a team. This created a tight bond amongst the boys. I would like to acknowledge the amazing group of people that helped us achieve the great results. Tim Cruickshank was our coach and was fantastic amongst the team and around the boys. Timmy provided us with his insight and knowledge of the game and was always there to help us out when required. Timmy played a huge part in our team’s success this year. Cameron Merchant also helped out with the coaching of PG’s. It was great to have Nappa involved with the team as he has such a calming influence around people and always provided us with strategies to approach certain situations. Dave Gardiner was fantastic to have as part of the team this year. He prepared us well and provided whatever the boys needed. He always made sure we had a great warm up and that we were in a good head space to approach the day’s play. A big thank you to Gordon Curry for scoring. Everything you do for our club Gordon is appreciated and we all love having you around. To everyone who played a part in our team this year we thank you for making it one of our most enjoyable and successful PG’s campaign.

Will Wolter Will was a great person to have up the order as he could provide both aggressive and defensive batting when needed. A great person to have in the team as he’s a great team man and is always positive. It’s been great captaining Will this year as he was always someone you could give a role to and know it’ll get done to the best of his ability. Aiden Bariol I was fortunate enough to play with Aiden most games this year whether it was in 2nd grade or PG’s and he has improved out of sight as a cricketer. The knowledge he has of the game was great to have around this year and the results can speak for themselves as he’s had one of the best cricket seasons he’s ever had. Great stuff this year mate. Jack Edwards Jack had a great year playing a lot of first grade and you could tell the experience he gained from playing in the higher grades developed him as a cricketer. The mental strength he used in certain situations was exactly what the team needed. Jack is one of those keys players to have in your team not only because he has more experience but he has the ability to take the game into his own hands and change it within a matter of balls. Been great captaining and working with you this year mate. Ollie Davies Ollie was the youngest of the group but that didn’t stop him putting his hand up and taking ownership when the pressure was on. Ollie at the start of the year was quite nervous giving up his U16 rep cricket to play PG’s but it didn’t show as he was as energetic as anyone else and loved being out there. Ollie showed everyone this year why he’s going to have a career in cricket if he sticks to it. The determination he has to do well is outstanding and he doesn’t back down on any situation. Great year this year mate loved captaining and playing alongside you.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2016/17 Annual Report

Jimmy Crombie One of the greatest blokes going around. Such a great team man and an absolute gun in the field. He can also be used with the bat and the ball whenever needed which was a huge advantage to us this year. Well done on a good year mate was great captaining you. Jake Carden What a year this man had. Such a valuable player for our side this year as and he showed himself and everyone else what he can do. Jake was a different player this year as he had the belief in himself that he could control the game when he had a bat or a ball in his hand. You could also see that he had gained the experience of playing in the higher grades and the different situations he had been under as he was calm in the toughest parts of our season when the pressure was on. Awesome year mate. Zach Trewartha Having played with Zachy for so long I knew what I was going to going to get and that was someone who would give you 100% and be positive around the group which he was and did this year. Such a good fielder as you always have been and was good to throw the ball too when needed to bowl. With the bat he always did what was asked of him which was usually be the ‘hitter’ which is why he doesn’t have the stats that back up the year he had this year. Like always mate love playing with you. Joe Graham What a great person this bloke was to captain. Using all the experience he gained from the higher grades Joey came onto bowl and usually made the batsmen look silly. Joey normally bowled early and played a huge part building pressure through the middle overs and bowling consistently allowing him to get maximum overs. Joey would be so happy with the year as he’s accomplished a lot in PG’s and first grade.

Josh Wigney Josh really led from the front this year in the bowling department opening the bowling every game. Having that extra pace ‘Wiggers’ usually built pressure early allowing us to continue the momentum through the middle overs and then he was used at the end to attack the tail enders and ‘finish them off’. Josh as any captain would agree is the bloke in your team that bends his back all day for you and always does what’s asked of him. Ben Falconer Ben along with Josh lead from the front this year as the pair both opened together. Ben provided that consistent in left arm in swing. Ben was always thinking which as a captain you love and was always coming up with ideas to attack the batsmen with pressure and getting them out. Ben usually bowled all his overs at the start as he was seen as a new ball bowler and did it well. As usual a great man to have in the team as he’s good for a laugh. Will Akhurst Will only played the 2 games for us this year but showed what he could do in both games he played. Will provided great energy amongst the team when he was 12th man and was onto everything and all he wanted to do was help out. Look forward to the next couple of years mate. Ned Hole Unfortunately Ned didn’t get a chance to play this year but when called upon to do 12th man he was always there and did it with such enthusiasm and energy. Was great having you around the team and looking forward to the coming years. Although it was a great year, I still can’t help but think that we missed out on a great opportunity to go deep into the finals and challenge for the premiership. However I am looking forward to doing just that again next season. Sam Gainsford Poidevin Gray Captain 2016/17

The 2016/17 Green Shield season began with the challenge of repeating the prior year’s success. After the previous two seasons, the Green Shield boys were hungry to go one step further, and win that premiership that the U/16 Manly side, has yet to do for a while. We set out a goal at the beginning of the season to play as hard as possible and take things one game at a time, and we were faithful that the results would follow. After David Gainsford stepped aside, club legend and life member Mike Pawley jumped on board to fill in the coaching role in which the players were all so appreciative of. Mike’s keen interest in Green Shield allowed him to bring the same passion he has always had to the table, and pass on his wisdom to the boys. The group of players that made up this side were rather inexperienced, both on a grade cricket scene as well as Green Shield. With only 7 U/16 players, and 8 U/15’s, this was always going to be a challenge for us this year due to the toughness of the Green Shield competition. With Mike’s guidance and Ollie Davies leadership the season was shaping up to be a promising one coming into Round 1. Unfortunately our best player in Ollie was unavailable for the most part of our season, only playing the two matches. However, this opened a new door for other players in the group to stand into the leadership role. Luca Franks, William Greenland, Ben Watts and Jordan Brewster all had a taste of what it is like to captain. To their credit each of the boys did a solid job, especially considering their lack of experience in the position. In these matches, all players had their moments which contributed towards a successful season. Highlights including a blistering 93 against Sydney Uni from Jake Osborne, a gritty, match-winning 60 not out from Kyle Martin against Hawkesbury and Ben

Watts putting on a masterclass of spin bowling with 5/8 at Manly oval. All these performances played a big role in our 4 victories this season. The season on the whole was a great success. Entering the last round we had everything to play for, with a finals spot booked had we won the match. Unfortunately, eventual premiers Sydney were a class above that day and gave our side a great lesson in how to play one day cricket. The loss was unfortunately heavy enough to see our quotient plummet and keep us out of the top 8. With Ollie coming back for the finals series, we would most definitely have had a chance of taking out the title. That wasn’t meant to be this season, however 8 members of this current squad will qualify for the upcoming Green Shield season. Their experiences will hold not only themselves, but the squad in great stead for some greater success in the coming year. This season saw the following player’s part of the Green Shield squad: Oliver Davies Immense talent with maturity well beyond his years. His class was displayed both on and off the field in the limited matches he played. Had the pleasure of not only coaching Ollie this season, but also as a team mate in 2nd Grade. Looking forward to seeing you continue to develop over the coming years. Will Greenland A very fundamentally sound, all-round cricketer. An exceptional leader as well. Keep improving all aspects of your game and I’m sure you will go far with your cricket. You were a pleasure to coach all season. Kyle Martin Kyle played arguably the best Innings of the season in my mind. In conditions barely suitable for the beach, Kyle grinded out a match winning 60* out at Hawkesbury in 40+ degree heat, outstanding effort.

This showcased Kyle’s high level of fitness and his hard-working attitude that I’m sure will hold him in great shape for the rest of his sporting career. Luca Franks Luca had a great season with the ball. Our leading wicket taker who continuously made early in-roads throughout the course of the season. Exceeded expectations with the ball and did a phenomenal job. Keep working on all aspects of your game and I’m sure you’ll be playing higher grades at Manly in the future. Jordan Brewster Delight to coach all season. Had some great moments with the ball however didn’t quite live up to his potential with the bat. With a bit more self-belief, your cricketing will go to the next level. Harry Kantor-Smith Unfortunately sustained a back injury that prevented you from showcasing your full range of ability. However you had good moments with the bat including that match defining partnership at Manly oval earlier in the season. Solid all-round cricketer with a great cricket brain. Byron Bates Despite having limited opportunities throughout the season, you again provided great contributions in multiple games. You were a very easy going man who did whatever the team needed of him, and never once complained. A coach’s dream Bazza, all the best. Jake Osborne Along with Luca, our most consistent performer of the year. Some of the talent Jake showcased the competition this year gives me great excitement to see what he will bring to the table next season. A very coachable young man, always attentive and asking for advice when needed. Special talent with a long future at Manly ahead of him. Ned Barnet Another solid all-round cricketer with a brilliant set of hands. Ned took some great catches throughout the course of the season. With a bit more consistency with both bat and ball, Ned will be a large part of our overall success next season.

Jarod Colyer Unfortunately for Jarod he was exposed to roles that were a little unusual for him being an opening batsmen most of his cricketing life. His rep cricketing success unfortunately didn’t role into the Green Shield season however I feel it was a great learning curve for your cricketing career, and you will come back bigger and better next season. A great bloke and a pleasure to coach. Bailey Kenzie A constant source of entertainment amongst the group. Bailey had great moments both on and off the field throughout the season. Given the role of bowling with a much newer ball than he is used to, he stood up to the task and similarly to Luca, made crucial early in-roads and always bowled economically. With a bit of work on his fitness Bailey will see the consistency with the ball go to a whole new level. Aidan Bennett Your classic lower order bat who is more concerned about how far his 6’s go than his run total. I challenge you Aidan to use the great ball-striking ability you have to shape yourself into a genuine all-rounder in the coming years. Your bowling was very reliable and your consistency all season played a big part in our success. Brynn Mendel Exceptional salad. Jokes aside you were a delight to coach all season. Your keeping was solid however it has plenty of room for improvement. I challenge you to continue to work hard on that as well as your batting leading into next summer and the years to come. Josh Park Unfortunately your season wasn’t to be with a poorly timed injury. Your left arm pace would have provided great variety in our bowling line-up. One thing I will say is you showed a lot of character and selflessness throughout the season. You were at every game supporting the boys, helping with drinks, warm-ups etc. A lot to like about you Joshy, not just as a cricketer but as a bloke as well. Ben Watts Benny was exceptional throughout the entire season. His green shield success led to an eventual 5th grade

debut in which he became a more permanent fixture in that side as the season went on. A very talented young spinner with many years at Manly ahead of him. I would like to express my gratitude for the fantastic support staff this season. Pathway manager Ross Denny was a great help to myself and Mike throughout the entire season. Personally, I entered the summer not knowing a great deal about a few of the individual’s in the group, Ross was quick to help us understand the players strengths and weaknesses and allowed us to shape the pre-season in a much more productive manner than we would have without him. Thank you again Ross, you were a pleasure to work with. Clint Colyer, came on board as the team manager for the season. Clint did a spectacular job and his enthusiasm in the role, made life so much easier as a coach. From the little 1%’s on game days to his emailing and communicating with the parents again made the season run smoothly. Thank you again Clint. Alan Wright, Langdon Gould, Don Sellin, Roy Vumbaca, David Gardiner and Todd Harper. Thank you all for your match day support throughout the year. From helping with warm-ups, to scoring, to setting up the ground, to running drinks for the players, your efforts didn’t go unnoticed and thank you for your continuous passion for the Green shield group and all you gentlemen continue to do for our great club.

To the parents. As a rookie coach with little prior experience in any sort of coaching role, I can’t express enough how grateful I am for the support you all showed me throughout the season. As well as this, your commitment as a group to each and every match of the season, despite our long trips out west, you all still made an effort to come and support the team. This was something I was personally stoked to see, and hopefully it continues for years to come. To Scott Osborne, thank you for organising the team bonding event at Royal Far West. This played a massive role in developing the relationships between the players. The afternoon teas were the best in the country and a big thank you to the mums especially for their fantastic work during home games. The umpires and opposition coaches were constantly astounded by your efforts, as were the players and other supporters. Thank you again. To Mike. Thank you for your leadership and guidance of not only the group, but also myself in a new role. The lessons and experience you passed on to me about coaching I am extremely appreciative of. Your challenging nature and passion is infectious and it was a pleasure to spend quality time with you over the summer. Cheers, Tom Kaye 2016/17 Green Shield Assistant Coach
