1. GETTING STARTED (to top)

Thank You for ordering the Zire71 Kennametal Mobile™. The package youreceived should contain:

(1) The Palm Zire71 package with the USB HotSync cradle. It also contains the Palmsoftware on two orange disks.

(2) The RS-232 Serial cradle for Windows NT users and PC based CNC controls.

(3) The CncGcoder™ Palm to CNC RS-232 serial cable. This cable works with mostCNC controls.

(4) The white CncGcoder™ CncSync utilities CD. This disk contains the CncGcoder™CncSync utility software and the BlueSync conduit installer.

(5) The Kennametal Mobile™ SD Memory Card. This card contains the KennametalMobile™ applications. CNC programs, photos, and other data can be stored on this card.

Follow the steps outlined in Section 2 to install the software onto the Palm and thecomputer. Sections 3 through 14 will explain in detail how to correctly use each of theKennametal Mobile™ applications. Finally, Section 15 will answer some of the mostfrequently asked questions and give some tips on using your Kennametal Mobile™.

2. SETTING UP YOUR PALM AND COMPUTER (to top)

• The following steps will walk you through installing the CncSync, BlueSync, andPalm software. Please follow the directions in order to properly install all thesoftware.

1.) Setup the USB HotSync cradle found in the Palm Zire71 Package. If you are usingWindows NT or do not have a USB port on your computer, use the serial cradle providedin the Kennametal Mobile ™ kit.

2.) Place the Palm Zire71 on the cradle and let it fully charge for at least 2 hours.

3.) Three compact disks came packaged in your CncGcoder™ kit, two orange PalmZire71 disks and one white Kennametal Mobile™ disk. (NOTE: In order to install theprograms properly, the intended user of the software must have local administrativerights during installation. After installation, the user does not need localadministrative rights to run the programs.)

4.) Insert the orange Palm Zire 71 disk 1 into your CDROM drive.

5.) The disk will automatically run and the Welcome screen will display (Figure 2.1).Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

18.) A black screen will appear and the programs will automatically install.

19.) Over the black screen, the BlueSync installer will appear. Follow the instructions onthe screen to install BlueSync. When the registration screen (Figure 2.10) appears, go tostep 20.

25.) On the computer’s desktop, use the mouse to double-click on the My Computer icon(Figure 2.13).

26.) Then double-click on Local Disk (C :) icon (Figure 2.14) to open up the computer’sHard Drive.

3. GETTING KENNAMETAL MOBILE™ STARTED (to top)

1.) To start the Kennametal applications and calculators, tap on the Kennametal Iconshown circled in Figure 3.1.

2.) Tap on the menu drop down icon (3-1) to access the menu bar (Figure 3.2).

3.) From the menu bar, tap on Language. Then tap on one of the seven languages(English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Germany, Italian, and Dutch) to select yourlanguage (Figure 3.2)

Machining Calculator: Calculates the cutting speed and cutting federate for variousmaterials and machining operations. It is a guide based on data from standard machinedata consideration as to tool holding, fixture, part holding. Machine condition will affectactual cutting results.

Tapping Calculator: Recommends drill size, feed, and speed for given materials, tapsizes, and tap types.

Kennametal Grade Advisor: Using Kenna Perfect, Kenna Universal, or WiperTechnology insert, grade and geometry are recommended for given materials and typesof cutting conditions. It also recommends a depth of cut, feed rate and starting condition.

Geometry Cross Reference: For various manufacturers and geometry styles, Kennametalgeometry, feed rate, depth of cut, and rake angle are suggested.

Grade Cross Reference: For various manufacturers, grades, and work materials, aKennametal grade is recommended.

Grinding Calculator: After specified data is entered, various cutting data (in metric) iscalculated for grinding operations.

Drilling Calculator: After specified data is entered, various cutting data (in metric) iscalculated for drilling operations.

Turning Calculator: After specified data is entered, various cutting data (in metric) iscalculated for turning operations.

Milling Calculator: After specified data is entered, various cutting data (in metric) iscalculated for either face-milling, peripheral milling, or disk-milling operations.

4. MACHINE TOOL CNCGCODER™ (to top)

4.1 OVERVIEW

• The machine tool CncGcoder™ can be accessed in two ways. Either tap theoption in the Kennametal Mobile Main Menu (Figure 3.4,3.5), or tap theCncGcoder™ icon in the Palm’s main menu circled in Figure 4.1.1.

• Tapping the area at the top of the screen called Main Menu (Tap Here) (Fig4.1.3, 4-1-10) will display a list of operations (Figures 4.1.8 and 4.1.9). Thsame list can be displayed by pushing in on the joystick. The operations lisdescribed further in Sections 4.2 to 4.15. There are two ways to maneuver list.

4.2 SETTINGS (to top)

• The Settings operation will display the current CncGcoder™ communicationsettings and allow you to change the parameters in order to transfer the G-Code toand from the CNC of the machine. Two drop down menus are located at the topof the screen. Tapping the top menu will display the various categories of settingsthat can be changed. Tapping the bottom menu allows you to match the specificsettings under each category to your machine's configuration. Each configurationmay be saved under different machine names. This operation also allows you toerase machines and machine settings that are already saved.

4.10 IMPORT FROM PC (to top)

• The Import From PC operation will load a special import file from the computerinto the edit area on the Palm. The imported file is created from a standardcomputer file into a Palm file using the ToPalm conversion software on thecomputer’s desktop. Only the most recently imported file after a HotSync sessionis loaded. ONLY ONE G-CODE FILE CAN BE IMPORTED PER HOTSYNC!

4.12 LOAD FROM SD CARD (to top)

• Choosing the Load operation will display all CNC Programs saved on the SD cardand allow you to choose a file to view. This operation will also allow you toimport multiple files from the computer at HotSync time.

1.) To import and load a file from the computer, go to step 2. To load a file that isalready saved on the SD card, skip to step 5.

2.) Files can be imported from the computer using the BlueSync software installed in

Section 2. To import files from the computer, open the CNC folder copied tothe desktop in Section 2. Place the file or files you want to import into the CNC folder.Only files may be placed in the CNC folder. DO NOT place additional folders into thefolder. The CncGcoder will not be able to recognize them. (NOTE: Using the SD card,multiple files can be imported at the same time.)

3.) Place the Palm securely on the cradle and then press the HotSync button atthe base of the Palm’s cradle.

4.) All the files that appear in the CNC folder will now be saved on the SDcard.

1.) The first screen will display a legal disclaimer. Tap the Continue button to get to thefirst page of the machine tool calculator (Figure 5.1).

2.) Tap the i button (5-1) to display the information about the program.

3.) Calculation Mode: Tap on a button to choose inches (5-2) or millimeters (5-3) foryour calculation. Once tapped, the selected value will be highlighted and a message willpop-up (Figure 5.3) asking if you want to convert the diameter. If you tap Convert (5-4),the number and units of the work/tool diameter (5-6) will be converted into the chosenunits. If you tap on the Don’t Convert button (5-5), the number will stay the same andonly the units will change. For example, if you chose to convert the 1 inch (5-6), theresult will be 25.4 mm (5-7). If you chose don’t convert, the result will be 1 mm (5-8).

4.) Material: Tap the down arrow (5-9) to drop down a list of materials. Select a materialby tapping once on the name

5.) Hardness (in BNH): Tap on the horizontal scrollbar (5-10) between soft and hard ormove the joystick from left and right to choose a hardness range for the selectedmaterial. The hardness number will be displayed above the bar (5-11).

6.) Operation Type: Tap on the down arrow (5-12) to display a drop down list with thetypes of operations to be performed. Select one by tapping on it.

8.) Work/Tool Diameter: Enter the work or the tool diameter (5-6). Data may be enteredin three modes.

a. Tap on the line (104) to display the cursor. Enter a value by tapping on the palmkeyboard (5-27) or using the Graffiti input (both are explained in further detail inthe Palm manual).

b. OR, tap on an increment value from the list (5-15) below the Calculate button.The selected increment value will be highlighted. Then tap on the Dia. – or Dia.+ buttons (5-16) to decrease or increase the diameter by the chosen incrementamount. Tap the Clear button (5-17) to erase the data from the line.

c. OR, move the joystick left and right to select the increment from the incrementlist (5-15). Then, move the joystick up to increase the diameter and down todecrease it.

9.) # Tool Edges: Tap on the down arrow (5-18) to drop down a list of the tool cuttingedges or inserts from 1 to 20. The small arrows at the side of the list will allow you toscroll up and down through the numbers. Tap on the number you wish to select. Use 1for drilling and turning.

General machining indicates machining up to .150 inch depth of cut. Finally, roughmachining is up to .300 inch depth of cut. Select one by tapping on it.
