Best of Me...Liz Corlett Best meal (cooked by you or byanother):Any cooking of mine that doesn’tinvolve the fire brigade is atriumph and any meal prepared bysomeone else tastes perfect.

Contextalwaysalchemisessimplefood intoediblegold. Thebest meal Inever hadwas a trayof noodlesonBrighton

Pier: I was hungover and stupidlyhungry, and dropped the lotbefore I’d taken a mouthful.

Best outfit or single piece ofclothing:I don’t have a sentimentalattachment to anything in mywardrobe. I tend to wear things todeath then replace them, mostlyfrom charity shops. I do have anantique top hat of which I’m ratherfond, mind. People should wearhats more.

Best memory:It’s a tie between two passes: mydriving test (on the ninth attempt),and Maths GCSE, when I realised Iwould never again have to sweat,

wretched with incomprehension, over a page of sums. It’s importantto build an archive of greatmemories. When I’m old, I want tosit in a wing chair with aninfuriating smile on my face.

Best way to spend the day:A long walk, followed by a seaswim and a rewarding ale. The‘quiet pint’ erupts spontaneouslyinto a Valhalla-esque session withfriends, during which everyone isdevastatingly funny and the secretsof the universe fleetingly revealthemselves. Alternatively, spendingthe day exploring a new city, enjoying the sense of freedom andpossibility that comes with beingsomewhere unknown and bursting

with interest.

Best advice:Life is too short not to do thethings you want to do. Up to acertain age, this seems trite, thenits pertinence suddenly kicks inwith force. See also: be good toyour parents – you only get oneset, and one chance. Lastly, don’thide from your bank statementsbecause they will always find you.

Best place in the Isle of Man:I never tire of Peel Hill, and thecoastal path from there to GlenMaye. But the Calf of Man is veryspecial – it has an atmosphere allof its own and a peacefulness thatgoes beyond mere quiet and intosomething deeper.

Liz Corlett is a freelance copywriter and features journalist. She lives in Peel with a tortoiseshell rescue cat called Ginny, who is not a baby substitute. She still hasn’t finished doing up her house, and is currently undergoing treatment for jigsawaddiction.

A crew of youngsters from the Isleof Man hoisted the main sail, scrubbed the decks and steeredthe ship during the sea journey ofa lifetime.A total of 40 students, aged 13-14, wereaccompanied by eight adults on a tall ship

adventure aboard theStavros S Niarchos.

They travelled toLiverpool to join thetall ship, which thensailed to the Isle ofArran via the westcoast of the Isle ofMan, before alsovisiting Belfast, returning past thenorth coast of the Isleof Man – where crewmembers waved to

supporters at the Point of Ayre – andback to Liverpool.

Julie Owen, assistant head teacher atRamsey Grammar School, was one ofthe organisers of the trip.

She said: ‘It was a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young peoplefrom across the Isle of Man to jointogether for a true learningadventure.

‘Learning is about so much more thangoing to school, and this was a seriesof lessons in life skills, personal goals, socialcommunication and teamwork which saw 40Manx youngsters set out as individuals andcome back as strong, successful team.

‘The permanent crew of the Stavros were veryimpressed by what they saw, andcongratulated our young people on theirachievements.’.

It wasn’t all plain sailing however, as theweather did not always stay the best.

One crew member recorded in their blog:‘(Last night) The sea was quite rough and lotsof people were seasick. Even though peoplewere sick (even some of our teachers), we stillhad to do night watches and steer the ship. It

was really hard to stay awake during watchand it was freezing cold. We did have ourwatch box of biscuits to give us energythough.’

The trip was sponsored in part by the ArtsCouncil as part of the Island of Culturecelebrations.

Pioneering work ondisplay in Port St MaryThe work of two ofthe pioneering andacclaimed youngartists working in theIsland is forming ajoint exhibition atStudio 42 in Port StMary. The exhibition, featuring the artof Jimmy Duggan and ManosKalamenios, runs until June 27.

Jimmy’s latest work is aneclectic mix ofpainting/sculptures framed invintage suitcases and tins. Thestyle of the paintings, at first, seems whimsical and childlikebut upon closer inspectionappears to explore darkerthemes. He has intentionallypainted the works in a naïve

simple style to lure the viewerinto the narrative of each of thepieces.

Jimmy was a pupil ofBallakermeen High School andgraduated in fine art at LeedsMetropolitan University.

Manos Kalamenios works inceramics and glass. His love ofthe purity and translucence ofbone china has resulted in muchof his latest work being in thismedium. He has been primarilyworking in white china but inthis exhibition there will besamples of fine black china withgold decoration. His work isusually very minimal in conceptwith various designs marryingthe ancient craft of ceramicmanufacture with 21st centurytechnology and tools.

After attaining a BA first class

honours degree in fine art,Manos is going on this autumnto study his masters in ceramicsand glass at the prestigiousRoyal College of Art in London.Manos has curated andexhibited at several significantexhibitions on the Island andwon the Noble Art award withhis water feature at the hospital.

Gallery co-ordinator AnitaHogarth said: ‘This is a veryimportant exhibition for Studio42, to be able to support andpromote two of the mostinfluential and important youngartists working on the Islandtoday is what we are all about.

‘These artists are making a verystrong impact on the Manx artworld, and this exhibition is animportant contribution to theIsland’s Year of Culture.’

Rendezvous Sky, whichlaunched in November2013, to offer a fresh new

approach to corporate/executive travel in theIsland is proving to be a

huge success. It offers the opportunityto charter aircraft flying toanywhere in the worldfrom the Isle of Man, butwith the added benefitthat you can choose toreduce the hire cost byusing Rendezvous Sky’slive data base to link upwith other companies andindividuals.

Rendezvous Sky has over400 aircraft on itsdatabase, allowing it tofind the best aircraft tosuit individual needs andrequirements. It can alsoorganise executivetransport as part of thepackage at either end offlights, for ease and peaceof mind

With over 15 years’experience in aircraftchartering, Brett Turner

CEO is very excited at thepositive response in the last fewmonths.

‘We have a dedicated team with24/7 cover here on the Island, andwe have now taken on a salesmanager, David Williams due tothe volume of enquiries. He isworking alongside Chris Byrne –general manager (formerly of IslandAviation) who has specialised inhandling corporate flights in the Islandfor 27 years and over 40 years in theindustry.

‘Myself and my business partner,Sarah Turner will oversee andcontinuously update our database anddevelop our new concept, IOMCharter Club, bringing peopletogether to combine flights andreduce costs.’

Rendezvous Sky has teamed up withEuropean Corporate Airline, WorldExecutive Airways, who have based aluxurious Super Kingair at Ronaldsway.

The airline’s managing directorJonathan Gordon, who is Manx andwhose daughter is an aviation lawyerpractising in the Island, says he hasbeen looking for the right opportunity

on the Island since 2008 and feels thatteaming up with Rendezvous is aperfect fit.

‘Rendezvous will book the aircraft andescort the passengers, we then takeover and deliver clients in style in theirchosen executive aircraft. Being basedon the Island will allow clients all theadvantages of corporate air travel butwithout the additional cost of theaircraft having to position toRonaldsway first,’ says Gordon.

An advantage of being based in theIsland is it allows Rendezvous to be inthe air in as little as an hour from aphone call to book the aircraft andcan comfortably seat up to eightpeople.

GUIDEBare essentials for The Full MontyWhat do you get whenyou throw together sixunemployed men whodecide to give theChippendales a run fortheir money and form aDIY striptease act, displaying their innersteel and a lot of wobblybits? One of the mostsuccessful British films ofall time, of course; onewhich showed, back in1997, that size isn't

everything when itcomes to making theearth move at the box-office.Following on from its success withDisney's Beauty & The Beast Jr, JTProductions is back at the GaietyTheatre this week with The FullMonty – The Musical.

Based on the award-winning film,The Full Monty is a musical with abook by Terrence McNally and scoreby David Yazbek.

In this musical stage version, from sixunemployed steelworkers, low onboth cash and prospects, decide topresent a strip act at a local clubafter seeing their wives' enthusiasmfor a touring companyof Chippendales.

One of them, Jerry, declares thattheir show will be better than theChippendales dancers becausethey'll go ‘the full monty’ - strip allthe way.

As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness, and anxieties, theyovercome their inner demons andfind strength in their camaraderie.

Women can ogle and giggle at theirleisure - and any male present canwonder along with the show's forlornhero Jerry - a dad thrown on thescrapheap and battling to keep holdof his kid - what the world is comingto.

Unkind audience cackles reveal howterrifying being a ladies' stripper canbe but overall the show is a feel-good invitation to overcomeinhibitions, banish

recessionary blues and celebrate thebody unbeautiful.

The show is cast entirely from localperformers, directed by David Artusand Choreographed by Gena Turpin.

JT Productions has brought togetherthe very best local talent to go TheFull Monty – but don’t worry, you canleave your hat on!

The show runs at the Gaiety fromFriday (May 16) until May 24, whenthere is a special late nightperformance.

It is not suitable for anyoneunder 14 and under-16s mustbe accompanied by an adult.Tickets start at £19.38.villagaiety.com
