George Serra suggests returningto the classroom, in a limitedcapacity, might be an answer.by Christopher [email protected]
Premier Christy Clark has publiclyasked B.C. teachers to suspend theirstrike, but her government needs tobring something new to the bargain-ing table for that to happen, saidGeorge Serra, president of the MapleRidge Teachers’ Association.
Clark made the request dur-ing a special news conference inVancouver at lunch on Tuesday.
However, if unresolved, teachers
may return to the classrooms any-way, Serra said, adding they can-not bargain with a government thatdoesn’t care about public education.
“The problem is, kids not being inschool doesn’t seem to impact thegovernment one bit,” Serra said. “Ifthey don’t care, we might say, let’sgo back to work on a limited cap-acity.”
Should that happen, parents andstudents will see the same phased, job action teachers took earlier thisyear, before the full blown strikebegan in mid-June.
This would include no studentsupervision outside of classes androtating strikes.
Serra doesn’t believe the premierwill legislate teachers back to work
because that would open anotherlawsuit where he believes the courtswill find the government has beenbargaining in bad faith, again.
He said the government has notbudged on their stance when itcomes to pay, benefits, or classroomsize and composition – which isn’thow negotiating and bargainingworks.
“We’ll come down if you [govern-ment] go up and that hasn’t hap-pened at all,” Serra told The TIMESjust minutes after Clark made heraddress.
“I think this is personal for ChristyClark. She wants to keep us out, whyelse won’t she put one additionalpenny on the bargaining table?”

When Shantzphoned totell her shewon the topprize, Viveirosthought he waspulling her leg.
“I didn’tbelieve him,” laughed the MapleRidge resident. “I asked if Josehad put him up to this.”

…continued from page A1Wednesday afternoon, B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF)
president Jim Iker said there are no plans to suspend thestrike while negotiations continue.
“Our members are standing strong and they areresolved,” Iker said in reaction to Clark’s statements.
“We’re not suspending any strike right now and don’tforget that we’re locked out. We need to enter into full-
scale mediation.”At the bargaining table, BCTF is seek-
ing a five-year contract, with an eight-per-cent wage increase, $5,000 signingbonuses, and reinstatement of pre-2002class size and composition numbers– which the province has been foundguilty twice by the B.C. Supreme Courtfor illegally removing from the teacher’scontract. The government is currentlyappealing that ruling.
The government has countered witha seven-year contract, seven-per-cent
wage increase and no reinstatement of the previous classsize and composition numbers.
An earlier $1,200 signing bonus was offered but is offthe table as it was contingent on a final contract beingsigned by the end of June.

Cuts to teacher support is one issuestill unresolved in negotiations.by Christopher [email protected]
In Craig Mitchell’s 29 years workingin the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadowsschool district, this current strike is theworst he’s seen it.
He has been on the picket lines num-erous times, but has never seen schoolnot reopen after Labour Day.
As the teachers union laments forclass-size and composition limits afterwinning two B.C. Supreme Court caseson the issue and the B.C. government’srefusal to discuss it, Mitchell saidparents need to step in to end thisimpasse.
“Parents are going to have to be theagents for change,” Mitchell said, whois a mentoring teacher and was outpicketing at the school district officeTuesday morning.
“Parents who have been in ourclasses know we’re here for the rightreasons,” he said.
“We are in a fork right now and thepathway they choose will not only havean impact now, but for the future.”
Mitchell said as society has changedin the past 30 years, so has the stu-dents and their educational needs.
There are more English as SecondLanguage students, kids with behav-ioural and emotional problems stem-ming from an increase in brokenhomes, and an expectation of teachersto do more with less resources and sup-port.
Gillian Ducharme, a speech therapistfor the school district, said there havealways been kids who needed moresupport than others, but that supporthas been cut through the years. Thishas meant larger classrooms with morespecial needs children – which she saidtakes a toll on teachers and the educa-tion students get as either more timeis spent with those students, slowingdown the class or those students need-ing more help, fall behind.
“Speech therapists, psychologists, counsellors, occupational therapists, etc, we were all put in place to supportteachers in handling kids with spe-cial needs,” Ducharme said. “But thegovernment has cut speech therapists, psychologists, counsellors... That’swhy we’re here [picketing].”

Residents are reminded to lock upgarbage and clean up fruit trees.by Roxanne [email protected]
Apples are ripening. It’s harvest season,so it’s no surprise to most Maple Ridgeresidents that bear sightings are on rising.
“It’s that time of year,” said DanMikolay, the Wildsafe B.C. coordinatorin Maple Ridge. He explained that bearsare hunting for extra food now, as theyincrease their calorie intake from an aver-age of 4,000 to 20,000 calories a day inanticipation of their “long winter’s nap.”
“Bears are starting to get ready forhibernation,” Mikolay said, remindingresidents of the need to lock up theirgarbage and the need to remove all otherattractants – such as bird feeders, barbe-cues, and ripening fruit.
“Bears, if there’s no food source, won’tcome around,” Mikolay said.
On the weekend, for instance, Silver
Valley residents spotted a black bear in anabandoned apple orchard across the streetin Rock Ridge.
Ruth Ross and fellow Rock Ridgeresident Deon Van Der Heever, bothdescribed themselves as “fortunate” tobe able to watch bears pass through theirneighbourhood regularly, and this week-end apple feast was no exception.
“Their tummies are full and they couldcare less about the people driving by andstopping to look at them,” Ross said, not-ing a new area resident from England wasthere in his business suit taking pictures, but Ross was content to stay back and useher telephoto lense to get her pictures.
“This will be the last year to seethem, as the three-acre property will bedeveloped next year and we will be look-ing at 62 townhouses instead,” she added.“It was just great to watch him so close.”
Van Der Heever said residents in hisneighbourhood are not complaining aboutbears, and – in fact – happy to see them.
“We happily co-exist with them.”• More at www.mrtimes.com, search “bears”

A local entertainershares a personalconnection to thisSunday’s SPCA event.by Eric [email protected]
Donna Milburn hasexperienced first-hand the differenceMaple Ridge SPCAmakes in the lives ofanimals.
Donna is one-halfof the Pitt Meadowsentertainment duoknown as Click and Clown.
Along with her husbandJim, the pair own a short-hair cat named Roulette, that was left at their homeby himself while the duowas out performing theirshows.
“We thought perhapswe should find him afour-legged friend to keephim company,” Donnaexplained.
In early 2013, she andJim decided to stop in atthe local SPCA in Albionto inquire about adoptinga pet.
Their questions wereanswered when theywalked into the front officeand laid eyes on a dog thatthey would soon call their
own.“Our dog Nikki was in
the front office,” Donnarecalled. “It was a perfectmatch.”
The pair went home thatevening, talked about her,and returned to the SPCAthe next day, where it wassuggested they foster Nikki“for a week or so.”
But it didn’t take long forthe 11-and-a-half year oldsmall crossbreed pooch tofind a place in the pair’shearts and become part ofthe family.
Nikki had come acrossCanada with her terminallyill owner who had movedto the West Coast to livewith her family.
“Nikki was well takencare of all her life,” noted
Donna. “They just couldn’tlook after her anymore.”
Stories like these arethe reasons behind theannual SPCA Paws for aCause, which takes placethis Sunday, Sept. 7 atthe Maple Ridge shelter,at 10235 Jackson Rd.Registration starts at noon, the walk begins at 2 p.m.
“Paws for a Cause meanshelping other animals...find homes,” said Donna.
More than just partak-ing in the walk, the couplevolunteer their time andentertain those who showup to the annual affair.
“The work the SPCAdoes is invaluable... we arehonoured to be part of theevent,” Donna added.

There are certain words thatjournalists dance around whendiscussing public figures. RobFord, for example.
If you sat down and skimmedany of the couple of dozen col-umns and editorials about Fordin the past few months, you’dprobably find a lot of derisiveadjectives. He’s a joke, he’s adisgrace to Toronto (or to all ofCanada), he’s an embarrassment, and so on.
But you will find only a fewpeople outright labelling him a racist, or a homo-phobe, or a bigot.
This is one of the strange things caused by theintersection of modern culture, libel law, andjournalistic practices.
Ford is far from the only public figure wecould talk about when it comes to this, but he’sa useful example. Ford has said outrageousthings like “the Oriental people, they’re slowlytaking over,” he’s said the mostly black footballplayers he once coached are “just f***king min-orities,” he’s opposed having anything to do withGay Pride celebrations, and the list of things he’ssaid about women, including his political oppon-ents and his wife, makes for lengthy reading.
So why do news stories about Ford not beginwith “Well-known bigot Mayor Rob Ford…”?
Basically, unless you are caught red-handedspray painting swastikas on a synagogue, orlighting a cross on fire while wearing a whitehood, you’re probably never going to be clas-sified as an outright racist in a mainstreamCanadian newspaper. If you’re a politician ormajor public figure, the chances of you beinglabelled a bigot is even lower.
I think there are three reasons for this.First, newspapers don’t want to be sued. This
is especially true in the modern era, in whichpapers struggle to simply remain profitable. Evenwinning a lawsuit can be expensive.
Second, and related to this point, we are still
consumed with the simple mind-ed idea that there are two sides toevery story. No, no there aren’t,but the crude version of thismeans that the media feels duty-bound to allow half-wits whohave said idiotic things in publicto respond. So they can say theywere misquoted, or were drunk,or it was just a joke. See also:Mel Gibson, Michael Richards,Donald Sterling, etc.
Third, we have the illusionthat racism is a discrete thing,
something you either are (in which case you area Nazi) or something you are not. There are noshades of grey in this idea of bigotry – you can’tbe sorta racist, or sexist, or homophobic – canyou? If you can be, what does that say aboutus? Maybe we’re not quite as colour-blind as wethought.
Ford has repeatedly said he’s not racist.“I deal with these black youth day in and day
out and nobody supports the black youth morethan I do in this city,” Ford recently said. Hereally and truly believes this.
The Toronto-based journalist Jeet Heer haswritten at length and with wisdom about thistopic. Notably, he recently said “Ford’s racismis of the patronizing/paternalistic type, with amixture of fear and envy. He thinks he’s help-ing benighted folks.” Of course Ford doesn’tthink he’s racist! How could he be? He’s helping, right?
People who say racist things are racist people. It doesn’t mean they’re beyond saving or thatthey never do anything good. Getting over thatall-or-nothing attitude would help us assessthings more realistically. Heer and others havetried to reframe the discussion.
It’s not so much about “Is X racist?” which isusually very obvious to everyone, it’s “What arethe impacts of X’s racism? How is it damagingpeople, and communities, and what can we doto fix it?”

Our View
Not all willget $40 fund
The provincial government has rolledout its $40 per day program for childrenaged 12 and under. Parents of childrenfrom kindergarten up to around the endof elementary school can start applyingfor the funds – though of course themoney won’t show up until after thestrike is over.
If the government actually gave outthat much to every parent of a publicschool child, it would cost about $12million a day, or most of the cost ofrunning the education system.
Of course, Finance Minister Mike deJong is canny enough to know that hewon’t be digging into the public coffersfor quite that much.
Some parents are not going to col-lect the money. The bulk of it will goto those parents in the middling middleclass – your typical household in whichboth parents work and their 1.5 kidscould always use more cash for hockeyequipment, dance lessons, college fundtop-ups, and maybe daycare.
On the top end, there are parentswho make enough money that goingthrough the hassle of the governmentregistration process just isn’t worth it.There are also parents who owe backtaxes or other fines.
Worst, though, is the fact that somepeople are definitely going to slipthrough the cracks at the bottom of theeconomic ladder.
There are a lot of parents in thisprovince who are doing everythingthey can to provide for their kids, andstill barely scraping by. Some parentswork two or three jobs. Some are recentimmigrants with limited English literacy. Some are single parents. Some are all ofthe above.
For those parents, the extra moneywould no doubt come in handy. Butnavigating the bureaucracy to get itback will be tough. We’ll be very inter-ested to see what this program actuallycosts the government.

Dear Editor,In the Christmas movie Elf, Santa Claus
is seen stranded in Central Park, New York. The motor on his sleigh breaks down andBuddy the elf attempts to fix it.
As Buddy works on the sleigh,Santa explains to Buddy that, in thegood old days, he would never havethis problem because his sleigh waspowered by the spirit of Christmas.
Buddy’s girlfriend convincesa crowd to join her in singingChristmas carols. The group’s sing-ing is broadcasted nationwide andsoon everyone is singing, whichraises the spirit of Christmas to new heights.
Santa’s sleigh is soon seen soaring in thesky.
I had my first symptoms of ALS four yearsago this month. Over the past four years,I have lost the ability to walk, talk, movemost of my body, and swallow properly;in essence, every muscle in my body hasstopped working or is on its way to thatresult. It’s understandable for anyone inthese circumstances to be in low spirits.
As I experience my body deteriorating on adaily basis, I look for things to raise my spir-its, and the recent ALS Ice Bucket Challengehas done this.
The money raised is great, but what’seven more important is that the challenge isa sign that society is in our corner, ready tofight this disease with us, arm in arm.
Right now, with my elevated spirits, Ithink I could guide Santa’s sleighclear around the world.

Dear Editor,In B.C., we have two or
more government “stan-dards” for dam safetyrequirements.
Under the Ministry ofLands Forests and NaturalResources and their DamSafety Act, we have asafety requirement ofone-in-10,000-year riskof failure engineered intothe BC Hydro earth-filleddam on the Alouette River.
Supposedly, the Alouettedam should withstand forcesresulting from severe geo-physical shocks.
What are the standardsunder the “BC Mining Act”for a dam holding backa watery, slurry-slime ofhighly toxic waste that wasperched above one of B,C,’sgreatest environmentalecological treasures, theQuesnel and Horsefly water-sheds?
In following my questfor reasons as to why theImperial Metals mine tailingpond dam failed at MountPolley near Likely, B.C., Iwas not surprised to findthat there are far lowerstandards for mining-tailingdams than for conventionaldams.
Given the double standardfor dams between B.C.’sMinistry of Lands Forestand Natural Resources andthe Ministry of Energy andMines, one can only drawthe conclusion that, in B.C.,it is unacceptable to destroy“fee simple” property and ordrown humans.
However, in the Ministryof Mines, the private for-profit mining industry has tomeet a far lower standard ofsafety for areas like QuesnelLake, which has a FraserRiver keystone sockeye runof salmon.
If Burrard Inlet orVictoria’s inner harbour wasin the potential path of theoutflow of the tailings pondat Mount Polley, what wouldhave been the chances ofpermitting this mine to oper-ate at all?
Some will say that’s anoutlandish comparison. Butthis was a First Nationsregional environmental cath-edral, and mine, too, as Ilived and recreated there inmy youth.
Yes, I saw the “Kor iNoor,” or “mountain oflight” and its beauty – beforethe mining industry allowedit to become a toxic wastedump.

Pot smoke not good for youDear Editor,
Canadian doctors report that all smoke is harmful, andthat smoking one joint is equivalent to ten cigarettes.
True to form, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair accuses theConservative government of attempting to recruit doctors “intheir ideological crusade against marijuana.”
Mr. Mulcair cannot even face the scientific facts of phys-icians who see the devastation of drug and alcohol abuse, orthat the doctors can think and speak for themselves.
Liberal leader Justin Trudeau also disregards the CMA’swarnings, and wants Canada to be a test case for the effecton Canadian children of legalizing cannabis.
The physicians in the CMA can tell them: all smoke isharmful, especially for children.

Environment:However, that ageless beauty isonly skin deep. While there’smuch to like about the interiorof the Accord in terms ofspaciousness, the applicationof technology leaves somethingto be desired.
Just as the split-level instrumentbinnacle on the Civic has itsdetractors, the Accord’s twinscreen setup is going to puzzlemore than a few people. Why’d theydo that? The top 8” screen looks nice, but it’s operated by a rotary control, while a second lower screen handles theaudio functions, and is at a lower resolution.
It’s odd, but it works – and yet a simpler layoutprobably would have been better. Having said that, theintegrated LaneWatch sideview camera is the sort ofclever innovation that only Honda could come up with:every time you put your right turn indicator on, a cameramounted on the right mirror shows a nice clear displaydown the side of the car, making watching for cyclistseasy, and parallel parking a cinch.
Other than that, the back seats are simply enormous, and ditto the trunk. This Accord might be slightly smallerthan the previous generation, but the nips and tucks don’tseem to have diminished the interior space much at all.
Performance:One feature that all Hondas used to have was a fun-to-drive essence that extended right across the range. Nowonder kids were hopping up hand-me-down hatchbacksback in the day: those cars had dual-wishbone suspensionand carved up corners like they were born on a track.
While the Accord is far more refined than the Hondas ofyore, it still has a bit of that racing spirit tucked under thehood. The four-cylinder option makes a reasonable 184hpat 5000rpm and 181lb/ft of torque at 3900rpm. The dualexhausts on the Sport models uncork an extra 5hp, andthe V6 stomps out an impressive 278hp and 252lb/ft.
Honda, bless their hearts, will sell you an Accord with areal six-speed manual if you want, but you’re better offselecting a Continuously Variable Transmission if youdon’t want to wait. I know, I know: a CVT. That can’t be
This is a car that shouldage well on the outside
HondaAccordTouring
good for driving fun, can it?
Truth be told, Honda’s nailed thistransmission. Unless you’re brutalwith the throttle, it doesn’twhine and rubber-band toomuch, and is extremely smoothand efficient. Even better, theAccord’s chassis is that of one ofthe ballerinas the H-badge usedto put out, meaning that it’sreally quite quick and nimble.
The electric power-steering iswell managed, without being over
boosted, and it frankly feels like areturn to form.
Tackling a curving on-ramp, the four-cylinder Accord carried enough speed
through the corner that little power was actuallyneeded for extra acceleration. That’s just the way anold Honda would have made the most of its power, andthe payoff is a great driving experience with minimalpenalty at the pump.
Features:Standard equipment in the mid-size sedan segment isusually very good and the Accord is no exception. The 8”display and a backup camera are standard, as is Bluetoothhandsfree, automatic headlights, and heated seats. Moveup to the Touring-spec trim and get leather heated seatsfore and aft, satellite navigation, and a multi-angle rearcamera.
Fuel economy is rated at 7.8L/100kms in the city and5.5L/100kms on the highway. The new five-cycle testingwould likely indicate a 10-15% bump in those figures, butthe Accord did return very good fuel economy in the realworld, particularly the way the CVT worked in the city.
Green Light:Roomy, comfortable cabin; lively driving dynamics; goodvalue from base model
Stop Sign:Overcomplicated twin-screen infotainment; styling maybe too conservative for some
The Checkered Flag:Finds the balance between the practical needs of a mid-sized sedan and the twinkle in Soichiro Honda’s eye
today’sdriveYour journey starts here.
There’s no denying that Mr. Honda was agenius, but he also nearly ran his companyinto the ground. Obsessed with perfection,he backed up the production line time andagain with new innovations and insights –the engineers eventually set up a desk forsomebody to field all his brainwaves.
It was no way to build a car, even if the carin question was actually pretty good. The Honda 1300was the first proper Honda passenger car, and it hadany number of clever tricks; sadly, it wasn’t a salessuccess.
The next car to come along was the Civic, and we allknow how that went. However, this time Mr. Hondawas forced to allow his engineers to stop pulling theirhair out in frustration and work together in a moreharmonious fashion. Little wonder than they’d soonproduce a vehicle called the Accord.
But then something happened. The svelte little Hondasof the 70s, 80s, and 90s ballooned into huge machinesthat were somewhat spongy. The Accord grew so muchit crossed from mid-sized to full-sized; comfy, sure, but where’s the personality? Happily, a proper Accordreturned last year and the harmony is back.
Design:Not much has changed for the 2014 year in terms ofthe Accord’s sheet metal, assuming you discount theoptional Hybrid version with its blue-green enviro-cues.It’s a conservative design, yet the more I look at it, themore there is to like.
While slightly shrunk in size, this is still a big, wide car,yet the clean styling avoids it looking cumbersome. Youget 18” alloys on both the Touring and Sport trims, butthe stock 17” rims look just fine, and will have cheaper-to-replace tires anyway.
There is the slight worry that the LED treatment on theAccord’s front headlights is going to start looking a bitdated as the LED-as-decorative style fades out of theluxury market. However, as an overall effort, the frontfascia manages to look distinctively Honda withoutlooking too distinctive. This is a car that should age wellon the outside.

The annual Labour Dayweekend soccer tournamentsignalled the season’s start.by Eric [email protected]
Soccer fields throughout thecommunity were abuzz this pastweekend as teams from all overB.C and as far away as the Yukondescended on Maple Ridge andPitt Meadows for the annual WestCoast Cup tournament, presentedby the West Coast Auto GroupFootball Club.
In total, 141 teams took part inthe tournament, said tournamentchair, Chris Begg.
“It was a lot of kids, and a lot ofgames,” he quipped.
The tournament went “exceed-ingly well” and Begg added thisyear’s event wasthe best it’s everbeen.
“We hadtremendousfeedback fromthe teams whovisited us fromout of town,” hesaid.
The tourna-ment is a uniqueopportunity for local teams to playteams they wouldn’t otherwisenormally play, noted WCAGFCpresident, Dan Mikolay.
The tournament isn’t just abenefit for soccer players and theirfamilies though.
It’s estimated that the tourna-ment injects $100,000 into thelocal economy as a result of allthe visiting players, parents, families and coaches, who needplaces to sleep and places toeat while they are here, addedMikolay.
“It’s an exciting time and thekick off to the Lower Mainlandand VancouverIsland soccer sea-son,” said WCAGFCexecutive director,Misty Thomas.
“The tournamentis a lot of fun, andpeople are excitedto get back into thegame.”
Thomas echoedBegg’s commentsregarding tourna-ment feedback fromparticipants. Shenoted that manypoint to the qualityof the facilities, theorganization and“friendliness” of thetournament, andeven things like thequality of officiating.
“Any time kids areplaying soccer andhaving fun, it’s nothard to enjoy your-self,” Thomas said.“It’s just fun.”

Organizers describe second annualbluegrass event as ‘awesome.’by Roxanne [email protected]
Albion is quickly becomingWestern Canada’s destination loca-tion for bluegrass fans.
While Merritt, Pemberton,Squamish, and Mission havebecome well known for their largeoutdoor music weekends, organizers ofthe True North Fraser Bluegrass Festivalin Maple Ridge are happy with the pace atwhich their local event is growing. In fact, coordinator Peter Vanderlee, said he isn’ttoo sure he’d want to see it grow too big.
The festival ran Friday night throughSunday. And in addition to those whocame out for just one day of music, therewere at least a hundred campers and doz-ens of RVers who set up temporary resi-dence at the Albion Fairgrounds for theduration of the second-annual festival.
Vanderlee would not yet speculate onfinal attendance figures, but said “We hadexpected attendance,” and claimed therewere “similar numbers to last year.”
The event – complete with 25 stageshows, numerous jamming sessions, mul-tiple workshops, endless food, and amplekids activities – attracted visitors fromthroughout the Lower Mainland, as wellas the B.C. Interior, the Sunshine Coast,Alberta, Washington, and even Oregon,he said.
“It was awesome,” said Vanderlee.“Everyone had a good time.”
As for the intermittent rain, he said thatdid not deter many real music lovers.
“It was dust control,” he said, notingthe showers were “short and sweet,” andfollowed by much longer stretches of sim-ply overcast or sunny skies. “No one wassweating.”
The local realtor and guitar player wasasked to speculate if the event will con-tinue. Vanderlee said, “yes.”
Asked if it would continue at the AlbionFairgrounds, he chuckled and said thatwith the future of the fairgrounds current-ly in limbo because of proposed Albionredevelopment, no one is sure about thefuture of that location, but he hopes it willbe in Maple Ridge.
The festival is only in its second year inMaple Ridge, but before that, operated for25 years in Chilliwack.
“We are certainly looking forward to2015,” he concluded.
