Our Marblehead
High Senior Project
Interns had their
Educational
Experience at the
COA! Nate Blum
and Will Haarer spent five weeks learning about
the senior center. They took classes, attended
programs, interviewed participants and offered
their own
creative writing
class.
In reflecting on
their
experiences
they noted how
much they enjoyed coming to the center and how
much they learned. They felt completely connect-
ed to the COA community, which was entirely
new to them when they began their internship.
We celebrate them
on their graduation
and wish them the
best of luck in
college.

ATTENTION ANIMAL
LOVERS!
Announcing an innovative NEW activity
program!
The Council on Aging, Worldly Pets and
The Marblehead Animal Shelter have
joined together to create a dynamic
fostering/adoption program partnering
our seniors with older cats.
“Our goal is to match/pair a Shelter cat
with a senior who would provide a
loving and caring home and
companionship. This would be mutually
beneficial for the cats and you.”
Statistics show that pets provide
significant health benefits, including
lowering blood pressure, lowering
cholesterol and decreased feelings of
loneliness AND unconditional LOVE!
Interested in learning more? Is Cost a
concern? Don’t let your questions or
“what ifs” keep you from asking about or
participating in this exciting endeavor!
Call Janice at 781-631-6225. She will
explain this very special program in
detail
SAD NEWS! Janet Durkee has accepted a full

COA NOTES
July 2018 Marblehead Council On Aging Page 5
SUMMER MEANS…
We can enjoy longer days of outdoor activity. However,
summer heat also brings along with it additional health
risks to be aware of. Did you know that as you get older,
your body’s water content decreases? Medications you
may take make you more susceptible to dehydration.
Many older adults have underlying health conditions that
make them less able to adapt to heat. Specific conditions,
such as comprehension and communications disorders,
decreased mobility, reduced capacity, as well as inconti-
nence, can contribute to dehydration. The ability to notice
changes in body temperature typically decreases with
age. Older adults often experience diminished thirst,
which leads to reduced fluid consumption. Here’s what
you can do to help stay healthy in the summer heat:
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER including drinking 8 ounces of fluid intake every time you
take medication. Keep water bottles with you, and drink
water throughout the day.
DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR
EXTREME WEATHER:
Wear hats, use and reapply sunscreen often.
LIMIT ACTIVITY DURING PEAK
HEAT HOURS:
Open windows or use fans or air conditioning
to cool off.
CHECK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS
AND FRIENDS.

HELPFUL
TRAVELING TIPS for those air travelers navigating
through airports
Air travelers walking to and from se-
curity to the gate or walking to the
next gate when changing planes may
experience longer walks than they
think. While the exercise is always
optimal, using a wheelchair can be a huge help in getting
from place to place and can be reserved when plane tickets
are purchased.

All day trips must be paid for in full at time of registration. Deposits are required on all overnight trips at time of registration. Unless otherwise noted, all trips leave from the VFW parking lot, 321 West Shore Drive. Because most of our trips require a great deal of walking and staffing is limited, all travelers must be able to attend to their own needs independently or bring their own escort for assistance. Please call Janice at (781) 631-6225 for more information.

IMPORTANT NEWS
Medicare coverage
of the
Shingles Vaccine
Did you know that all Medicare Part D plans cover a
shingles vaccine, such as Zostavax or the newly
released shingles vaccine, Shingrix, which is
recommended by the CDC
(center for Disease Control and Prevention)?
The cost for the vaccine will vary for each Part D plan
and even by the pharmacy where you get the vaccine.
You can contact your Medicare drug plan or Medicare
Advantage Plan for more information on which
vaccines are covered and the co-pay at your preferred
pharmacy.
For assistance with any Medicare issue, contact the
SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of
Everyone) Program. Trained SHINE counselors
offer free,
in-person unbiased, confidential counseling on all
aspects of Medicare and related insurance programs.
Appointments are available at the COA:
Mondays at 9a, 10a or 11a
Tuesdays at 10:30a, 11:30a or 12:30p Wednesdays at 11:00a, 12:00p or 1:00p
Please call (781) 631-6225 to make an
