Why Consider Filming With a Camera?

• For online courses, it gives students the illusion that there is a real teacher in the class

• Gives online students a similar experience to being in the classroom

• Don’t need to learn special software or purchase a laptop in order to record (still need basic video editing software)

• You can teach using a whiteboard and markers which can be easier to write compared to some digital pens/stylus

DSLR Cameras - Pros

• Big imaging chips which produce high quality still images

• Interchangeable lenses

• Ability to use for both video and still images

• Great video quality compared to other consumer cameras

DSLR Cameras - Cons

• Have limited recording time of just 12 minutes per clip

• DSLR cameras are still photo cameras and were never designed for video (afterthought in their design)

• DSLRs don’t have XLR audio inputs to allow the use of professional mics and mixes

• DSLRs do not include extra features such as manual audio control, zebra stripes for judging exposure, or motorized zoom

Remember Accessibility!

• Nearly 1 in 5 people have a disability in the U.S. (U.S. Census Bureau)

• Describe important images/graphs contained in your video presentation

• Be mindful of color. Avoid using color alone. Use high contrast colors.

• Limit the amount of text per slide

• Don’t put too many images on each slide (1-3 images is recommended)

• Add closed captions to your videos (YouTube automatically puts captions in your videos)

Steps to Film

• Set up a clean whiteboard in a quiet environment such as your office or classroom

• Put the camera on a tripod and do a couple of test takes

• Make sure the sound is recording properly!

• Have the problem or question written on the board ahead of time

• Press the record button, walk over to the whiteboard and teach the concept. Be sure to pause for a few seconds before and after you finish talking

• Walk back and press the record button again to stop

• Edit your video with software
