ATTENTION:
ALL ADULT HOLY SPIRIT
PARISHIONERS!
The Christ Renews His Parish Women's Retreat will
take place at Holy Spirit on March 25-26 and the
Men's Retreat will take place April 1-2. The event is
free and purposely takes place at our own church.
The basic gist of the weekend involves hanging out
and meeting people from the Parish that you may
have seen at church for years and just never asked
their names or new folks that you have never met
before. The weekend offers quality time with Jesus
and a reprieve from the rest of the world for a short
period of renewal.
We of course eat good, spend some time in adora-
tion, provide an opportunity for confession, attend
5:00pm Mass, spend the night on amazingly comfort-
able air mattresses and participate in a few fun exer-
cises and games.
The retreat offers you the opportunity to get to actu-
ally know other Catholic men and women as well as
their families whom you worship with and enter into
Heaven with during the Eucharist every Sunday.
Let's face it - our worship and participation in the
Eucharist is one of the most intimate things we do
and we don't even know many of the people that we
experience it with.
What better way to spend a weekend during Lent
than with a group of men or women who are on a
journey toward falling deeper in love with our Sav-
ior?
Daily Reflections
Sunday: Blessed are those who mourn, for they
will be comforted (Mt 5:4). Lord, give me a broken
heart over abortion. Give me the grace to do my part
in ending this evil.
Monday: Repent and believe in the Gospel (Mk
1:15). Lent prepares us to share the victory of life,
and to live as the people of life.
Tuesday: Some people slanderously accuse us of
proposing, “let us do evil so that good may result”
(Rom 3:8). The battle for life is one that we conduct
only by choosing good. We can never destroy or kill
in the name of life.
Wednesday: Rise, take the child and his Mother
and flee to Egypt (Mt 2:20). St. Joseph is a model
for all Fathers. Thousands of times a day children
are aborted because of the choice of a father. Lord,
bless all fathers so that
Thursday: Even now, I know that God will grant
you whatever you ask of Him (Jn 11:21). Lord, we
are a people of hope. Grant us perseverance and vic-
tory in the battle for life.
Friday: Love your neighbor as yourself (Lev.
19:18). Let your command of love, O Lord, free us
from the prejudices that distract us. Open our eyes
to see every human person as our neighbor - through
all stages of life - and to act accordingly.
Saturday: If you wish to enter into life,
keep the Commandments. He said, “Which
ones?” And Jesus answered, “You shall not
kill” (Mt 19:17-18). Lord, all the good you
give us depends on life. Bring an end to all
killing so that we may each walk the path to
life eternal.

Have you ever been asked Catholic ques-
tions at work, on the ball field, or at fam-
ily gatherings? Have you ever been
asked the reasons why Catholics do this
or that or why Catholics believe what they believe?
Most of us have been taught what we believe as
Catholics, but we have trouble explaining why we
believe it. Have you ever had trouble finding Catho-
lic doctrine in the pages of Scripture? Would you
like to be able to help your children embrace the
Catholic Faith? Lighthouse Catholic Media was de-
veloped to do all of these things and more. By listen-
ing to Lighthouse CD’s, Catholics learn the faith
well and are able to explain the reasons that we be-
lieve as we do. Catholics who avail of Lighthouse
books, CD’s, and booklets rejoice in their Catholic
faith and are able to evangelize others leading them
into the Church. If you have never listened to a
Lighthouse Catholic CD, try one today!

From the Library… Father Gabriele
Amorth had been the chief exorcist for the
Vatican for 30 years. In a 2010 interview,
when he was 85, he claimed to have treated over
70,000 cases of demonic possession. Over 20 years
ago, he wrote the book An Exorcist Tells His Story,
in which he detailed Satan's power (it's very real) and
related steps in the counteracting Ritual. He also la-
mented that few bishops and priests would even at-
tempt an exorcism. The Ritual (in Latin) was last
amended in 2004, and in November 2014 United
States bishops approved its translation into English.
There are now over 300 trained exorcists. Both
Amorth's book and the bare-bones English version of
the Ritual of Exorcism are in the Library.

Lenten Regulations
The annual observance of Lent is the special sea-
son for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter.
Through its twofold theme of repentance and bap-
tism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechu-
mens and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mys-
tery. Catechumens are led to the Sacraments of
Initiation by means of the Rite of Election, the
scrutinies, and Catechesis. The faithful, listening
more intently to the word of God and devoting
themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit
of repentance to renew their baptismal promised.
Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to
fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are
recommended.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday: These are
days of Fast and Abstinence from meat. There is a
limit of one full meal on these days for all between
the ages of 14 and 59 inclusive.
Days of Abstinence: (All Fr idays in Lent) All
who have reached their 14th year are bound to ab-
stain totally from meat.
Easter Duty Obligation: After they have re-
ceived their First Holy Communion, Catholics are
bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Com-
munion at least once a year. If you have not been
to Holy Communion for a year, you are required to
make your Easter Duty. This precept should be
fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are
also bound to confess serious (mortal) sins at least
once a year, but it is not limited to the Lenten/
Easter Season.

Lent is the penitential season of the Church year. It
begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Mass
of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Lent has
six Sundays. The sixth is called Passion or Palm
Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week.
The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass
of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. It com-
memorates the Lord’s passion and death on Good
Friday, reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil and
ends with the evening Prayer on Easter Sunday.

Are any among you sick? The priest showing up to anoint you used to be a
bad sign. Although the Council of Trent (1545-
1563) taught that “extreme unction” was for all
who were sick, we slowly came to see the anoint-
ing as the “last rite” to be celebrated when death
was imminent. The Second Vatican Council
(1962-1965) reminded us that our truly last rite is
viaticum, holy communion. The anointing is
meant to strengthen and support and heal the seri-
ously ill, those advanced in age, and the infirm.

“Bear one another’s burdens and in this way you
will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal 6:2)
My Lenten Reminder Jesus, dear Savior, During these forty days of Lent, I want to fast, to pray, to repent. Above all else I want to stay in the circle of Your love each day. Walk with me, surround me with Your light; lead me, guide me, and keep me in Your sight. Thank you for your great love and care; May I give witness to it everywhere. In these forty days, help me to follow You and imitate your love in all I do. Amen
Lenten Meditation: “O my Beloved, no one had the right over
You and yet You obeyed not only the
Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph, but even
Your executioners. Now in the Sacred Host
I see You at the height of Your annihila-
tions. How humble You are, O divine King
of Glory.” (St. Therese of Lisieux)

imitate him, to do as he would have us do, and that in-cludes serving others.
TODAY’S READINGS: Jeremiah 18:18-20; Matthew 20:17-28 (232). “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ran-som for many.”
THURSDAY, MARCH 16
Give the gift of love One of the keys to Lenten conversion is almsgiving, a word seldom heard except in church, which might be apt because while altruism can often be found among all good people, there is something more here than acts of charity. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul says, “If I give away everything I own . . . but do not have love, I gain nothing.” It is the love, your attitude toward the other, not the thing given or even the sacrifice in giving that matters; it is the love that must motivate the gesture. It’s not only, “Shall I give this person a few dollars?” but also, “Shall I—can I—love them?
TODAY’S READINGS: Jeremiah 17:5-10; Luke 16:19-31 (233). “I, the Lord, alone probe the mind and test the heart, to reward everyone according to his ways.”
FRIDAY, MARCH 17 MEMORIAL OF PATRICK Larger than legend Saint Patrick is often pictured with crosier, shamrock, and snake in hand. Tales of him using the shamrock to explain the Trinity or miraculously expelling snakes from Ireland are products of a later piety. But there’s plenty about the historical Patrick to inspire admiration. Captured from his native England by raiders and enslaved in Ireland, after his escape Patrick deliber-ately returned to the land of his misfortune to bring the gospel. The crosier symbol is accurate: Patrick served as bishop and apostle to Ireland. Today he reminds us of our moral obligations even to those who trespass against us.
TODAY’S READINGS: Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a; Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46 (234). “The king-dom of God will be taken away from you and giv-en to a people that will produce its fruit.”
SATURDAY, MARCH 18 MEMORIAL OF CYRIL OF JERUSALEM, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Doing good We all want, even need, to feel God’s presence, don’t we? If not, what would be the point of believing? One way to feel the closeness of God is to live as God wants us to. As long as we give of ourselves and do good, we can be sure that God is with us. For inspiration we can look to Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, remembered today, a bishop who worked hard for the people in his care, even while he was engaged in an intense struggle with those who sub-scribed to Arianism, the major heresy of the time. He even sold church property during a famine to relieve the sufferings of the poor. Give yourself to a good cause.
TODAY’S READINGS: Micah 7:14-15, 18-20; Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 (235). “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
You look divine Extreme makeovers are all the rage. Some of
us sense that a more beautiful person is hiding inside, and with a lot of help and loads of money, we try to make our dreams come true. Well, we’re half right—something beautiful is hiding inside of us, but plastic surgery and a new wardrobe won’t bring it shining forth. All we need is a pure heart—which comes when we realize we are God’s beloved children and we each have God’s exquisite grace within us. We can help others see us in this heavenly light simply by being true to ourselves and our divine origins.
TODAY’S READINGS: Genesis 12:1-4a; 2 Timothy 1:8b-10; Matthew 17:1-9 (25). “He was transfig-ured before them; his face shone like the sun.”
MONDAY, MARCH 13
Let’s give it up for Lent If you grew up Catholic, you probably heard the question (perhaps more often than you would have liked!): “What are you giving up for Lent?” Often enough it was about forgoing goodies such as chocolate or your favorite televi-sion show. Good enough as far as it goes, if it taught you something about healthy self-denial. But there is another, more interior way to give things up for Lent—things such as judgmental comments that come from a secret sense of superiority or condemning attitudes that are nothing more than self-righteousness dressed up in sharp clothes. The real action in the spiritual life, we learn as we age, is interior. So—what will you give up this Lent?
TODAY’S READINGS: Daniel 9:4b-10; Luke 6:36-38 (230). “The measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”
TUESDAY, MARCH 14
Don’t underestimate her The Bible seems overpopulated by widows. Widows were a social problem in a world owned and operated by men. Without outside help, such women and their children were vulnerable. Yet widows assist prophets in the Old Testa-ment and support Jesus in the gospels. Widows are ac-tive in the early church, and a woman named Tabitha was so indispensable, Peter is obliged to raise her from the dead. Helping others can help heal a mourning heart. In-vite the widowed to be a contributing force in your com-munity.
TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 1:10, 16-20; Matthew 23:1-12 (231). “Redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.”
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15
Aim low to go high places “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your Kingdom,” the mother of the apostles James and John was telling Je-sus—as if to say, “This Kingdom of yours, I want my boys in on it from the get-go.” Everyone, it seemed, was telling Jesus what to do. Jesus, though, had a very different take on who comes first and last: “Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant.” To follow Jesus is to
