To Our Guests:

If you are new to Cityview, or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards (called “Connection Cards”) at the end of each aisle. These are a way for you to both communicate with us and to request information about Cityview. Connection cards come with a “no hassle” guarantee- we will not call you unless you specifically ask us. However, if you request information, the appropriate ministry leader will get in touch with you.

Our Purpose: You might be wondering, “Whatʼs this church all about?” At Cityview, we keep it simple: We are imperfect people that gather together in response to the grace of Jesus Christ. We are committed to worshiping God, loving each other well and serving the West Loop, the city of Chicago and the world.

The Liturgical Year

The Liturgical Year, also known as the Christian year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons that determines, in Christian churches, when celebrations, memorials, commemorations, and solemnities are to be observed. The liturgical year follows the story of Godʼs redemption through Christ and is intended as a pedagogical aid for Christian discipleship- as the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ is modeled year after year.

The year begins with Advent, moves into Christmas, through Epiphany, and arrives at Lent, which is a season of preparation for Easter. At the end of Lent is what is known as the Great Triduum (the three great days)- which are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday Easter Vigil. The story reaches its climax at Easter, which lasts fifty days and ends at Pentecost. After Pentecost, we enter Ordinary Time or the Trinity Season, during which the Church is to focus on living the Gospel in day-to-day life.

The Lenten Season What does Lent mean? Lent is a 40-day period before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday (this year, March 9th). We donʼt count Sundays because they are ʻfeastʼ days, commemorating the Resurrection. Lent is a season of soul-searching, repentance and reflection. This tradition originated in the early Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when Christʼs followers sought to rededicate themselves to obedience, sacrifice and acts of service. At the heart of any worthy Lenten observance is a cultivated attitude of repentance and sorrow. A true repentance means a genuine change in heart and mind, a change of disposition where ever in our lives we need to return to God. That is why true repentance can never be satisfied by mere external observances, no matter how rigorous they are. Repentance is no morbid introspection or “guilt trip” in which we become bound up in ourselves, turned inward to the point of unhealthy despair. Rather, it has a holy and compassionate God as its focus. Therefore, Christian repentance always means faith in God, trusting him, responding to his grace. That is why whatever guilt or sorrow we may feel does not crush us, but rather brings us closer to the truth of Godʼs goodness toward His children.

Prayers for Reflection: (These prayers are available for personal reflection and prayer during or after the service.)

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may

turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you – the true and living bread.

Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with

perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever

dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared

hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserve in order

to offer me complete forgiveness. I know that you have been raised from the

dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be

undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If

what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of

who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and

that leads to the life you promise. Amen.

*Indicates congregation standing Preparing in Stillness: We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we often are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read these reflections, look over the rest of the service, or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to Worship: We need to be “called” to come and worship God be-cause we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Order of Worship Prelude Preparing in Stillness “Ancient is this warning of the church-- so ancient that the modern Christian is embarrassed to find her church ignorant, contrary to the freedoms of the age. Ancient, likewise, is the season of Lent, when the Christian is encouraged to think of her death and the sin that caused it-- to examine herself, to know herself so deeply and well that knowledge becomes confession. But ancient, too, is the consolation such an exercise provides, ancient precisely because it is eternal. “It is this: that when we genuinely remember the death we deserve to die, we will be moved to remember the death the Lord did in fact die-- because his took the place of ours. Ah, children, we will yearn to hear the Gospel story again and again, ever seeing therein our death in his, and rejoicing that we will therefore know a rising like his as well.”

--Walter Wangerin

“No one can say why it is that one was chosen and another not...The answer to that question is known only to God. But if we cannot know for what reason one was chosen, we can most certainly know for what purpose he was chosen: he was chosen in order to be a fruit-bearing branch of the one true vine (John 15:16), a witness through whom others might be saved. He is chosen in order that through him Godʼs saving purpose may reach to others, and they too be reconciled to God in and through His reconciled and reconciling people. “And we can also see that wherever the missionary character of the doctrine of election is forgotten; wherever it is forgotten that we are chosen in order to be sent; wherever the minds of believers are concerned more to probe backwards from their election into the reasons for it in the secret counsel of God than to press forward from their election to the purpose of it, which is that they should be Christʼs ambassadors and witnesses to the ends of the earth; wherever men think that the purpose of election is their own salvation rather than the salvation of the world; then Godʼs people have betrayed their trust.”

--Lesslie Newbigin GOD CALLS US

*Call to Worship Isaiah 43: 19-21 Leader: Let us worship God, who has done great things. All: We rejoice in our God, who made a way through through the desert of this world. Leader: Let us worship God, who has caused streams of mercy to flow in the

wasteland. All: We are the people God has formed through Christ; we worship him, and we rejoice! Leader: Let us worship God in spirit and in truth. All: We praise God for the grace that has saved us. Alleluia! We rejoice!

*Lenten Prayer Leader: Journey with us, O holy God, as we begin our way to the cross. Sharpen our focus, that our attention may center more on you than ourselves. Lead us through the shadows of darkness and prepare our hearts, that we might be a people of prayer, ready to perceive and respond to your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ. In his name we pray. All: Amen.

4

*Hymn of Praise Father, Long Before Creation Words: from a Chinese Hymn Music: Andrew Osenga

5

*Hymn of Praise O Come and Mourn With Me Awhile Words: Frederick Faber Music: Eric Ashley

GOD CLEANSES US *Call to Confession Psalm 51:17 Leader: “The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

*Prayer of Confession

Leader: Most merciful God whose Son, Jesus Christ, was tempted in every way, yet was without sin, we confess before you our own sinfulness; we have hungered after that which does not satisfy; we have compromised with evil; we have doubted your power to protect us. Forgive our lack of faith; have mercy on our weakness. Restore in us such trust and love that we may walk in your ways and delight in doing your will.

All: Amen.

Confession of Sin: Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

Assurance of Grace:

Christ has given the Church authority to declare

forgiveness of sins in his Name. Because of this, when

the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can

know that Christ agrees.

Words of Assurance Based on 1 Timothy 1:15, 17 Leader: Here are words you may trust, words that merit full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. To all who confess their sins and resolve to lead a new life, he says, “Your sins are forgiven.” He also says, “Follow me.” Now to the one who rules all worlds, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.

All: Amen.

Leader: Brothers and Sisters, you have heard Godʼs holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

All: We do.

The Lordʼs Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

Worship Through Giving: Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that every- thing we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

The Sermon: Some view the Sermon as a

way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore,

as you listen, pray to be open to the Spiritʼs leading,

exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

GOD SPEAKS TO US

Sermon Text Mark 3: 7-19

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! Sermon

The Gospel of Mark: Following Jesus Reverend Dan Adamson

GOD STRENGTHENS US

*Confession of Faith Question 1 from the Heidelberg Catechism

7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea 8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. 9 And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known. 13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Leader: What is your only comfort, in life and in death?

All: That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will ofmy Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

9

Guidelines for Communion: Communion, also called the Lordʼs Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. Please note: we use wine. White grape Juice is in the center cups of the trays.

The Benediction: God always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

Prayer of Thanksgiving & Consecration

Communion

Doxology

Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to our God. All: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

*Hymn of Benediction Thy Mercy, My God Words: John Stoker Music: Sandra McCracken

*Benediction

Leader: May the God who shakes heaven and earth, whom death could not contain, who lives to disturb and heal us, bless you with power to go forth and proclaim the gospel. The grace of God be with you all, now and always.

All: Amen.

*Dismissal Leader: Let us go now to serve the world as those who love our Lord and

Savior Jesus Christ. All: Thanks be to God!

The Benediction: God always gets the last word in our encounter of
