Está precedida por un momento de silencio en el cual la asamblea, en silencio, presenta sus peticiones a Dios. El sacerdote que preside la celebración, las “colecta”, de ahí el nombre de esta oración y, siguiendo una tradición antiquísima de la Iglesia: “Se dirige regularmente a Dios Padre por Cristo en el Espíritu Santo” (Instrucción General para el Uso del Misal Romano, 54). Esta misma oración es la que constituye a la asamblea como una comunidad orante, pues no sólo la invita a orar, sino a ser consciente de la presencia de Dios. El Amén que concluye la oración reafirma lo dicho por el sacerdote, por ello debe ser contundente. La razón de esta oración que “recoge” la intención del pueblo, explica la postura orante del sacerdote: de pie y con las manos extendidas.
