Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector

PARISH LENTEN MISSION THIS WEEK This week we welcome Fr. Emmerich Vogt, O.P., as he leads our parish in a Lenten Mission. His theme is Principles of the Spiritual Life: Spiritual Healing. He will focus on discovering a practical, spiritual program that, if lived one day at a time, leads to “peace beyond all understanding.” Father Emmerich is our homilist at all Masses this weekend, March 14 and 15. He also will present daily conferences in the Basilica Monday, March 16 through Thursday, March 19. You can choose to attend an afternoon session at 12:45 p.m. following our 12:10 p.m. Mass, or an evening session at 7 p.m., except for March 19 when we will have Mass at 7 p.m. with Father Vogt as our guest homilist. Both of the talks each day will cover the same material. For more information, see the insert in this bulletin and our website.

FEAST OF SAINT PATRICK Tuesday, March 17 is the Feast of Saint Patrick, great patron of Ireland. A renowned 4th and 5th century evangelizer, he not only converted Ireland but, through Ireland, saved much of western civilization. Many of the people who founded our parish 225 years ago were Irish immigrants, so we have an important link to Saint Patrick. Let’s wear a bit of green that day in his honor!

SOLEMNITY OF SAINT JOSEPH & PAPAL ANNIVERSARY Thursday, March 19 is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus. He has been honored on March 19 since the end of the 10th century and was declared Patron of the Universal Church in 1870 by Pope Pius IX. He is the special patron of work-ers, carpenters and fathers. Since it is a Solemnity, we are dispensed from our penitential Lenten practices that day! March 19 also is the anniversary of the inauguration of Pope Francis in 2013. As a Basilica, we are required to celebrate “with particular care” certain dates, including the anniversary of the Pope’s election or inauguration. We will mark the occasion here at the Basilica of Saint Mary with Mass at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 19.

PRAYERS FOR OUR CONFIRMANDI Next Saturday, March 21, 101 students from our Basilica School of Saint Mary and our CCD program will be confirmed here by Arlington Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde. The sacrament of Confirmation “is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace” (CCC1285). “The effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit” (CCC1302) to fortify every confirmandi to stand as a firm witness in faith, grow in hope and become a person of Christian charity in the world. Please pray for these young people as they continue their faith journey.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to Confirmation, there will be no Confessions at 9 a.m. or 4 p.m.

on Saturday, March 21.

FELLOWSHIP & SERVING OTHERS

2020 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL Steadfast in Faith and Joyful in Hope

The Bishop’s Lenten Appeal is critical to our diocesan needs and we are asking every

household in our parish to support this appeal to the extent they are able. The BLA funds

many programs, services and ministries serving people in need and furthers the

Gospel mission of Jesus Christ. Let us join to do the Lord’s work, work that touches

the lives and souls of thousands of people.

As of February 27, the Basilica of Saint Mary reached 72 percent of its goal of $700,000!

Many thanks to all who have made a pledge. If you haven’t done so already, please go to:

https://stmaryoldtown.org/BLA2020

SUPPORT FOR ADULT CHILDREN OF DIVORCE Recovering Origins is a unique healing program designed for adult children of divorce. The group will meet for six Wednesdays: March 18 and 25, April 8, 15, 22 and 29, 7:30 p.m. in the Fr. Rankin House at 314 Duke Street. Sponsored by the Arlington Diocese Office of Marriage, Family and Respect Life. For more information, contact [email protected] or 703.841.3807.

From Your Saint Vincent de Paul Society Lenten stories...right here in Alexandria. We visited Janie, who was in the Carpenter’s Shelter after complet-ing a successful drug rehab program in Richmond. She was working two jobs as a cook at local eateries and a third job cleaning classrooms. She has dug herself out of debt with her hard work and needed our help to leave the shelter and rent a modest apartment. We did so know-ing that she has embraced a new life and will become self-sufficient. This Lent, please say a special prayer for Janie and ask yourself: is it my calling and time to volunteer and help the poor, bringing comfort and assistance to neigh-bors like Janie? If so, or if you wish to contribute to our work, contact Jim Larocco at [email protected].

BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. — Matthew 5:4

The Basilica Bereavement Committee provides, at no charge, a reception in our Lyceum after the funeral Mass of any parishioner. This wonderful volunteer group is now short-handed and may be forced to turn down future requests from parishioners who need and greatly appre-ciate their services. The work does not require any special skill, expertise or food preparation. (If you can contribute food, that is cer-tainly welcome.) Most needed are volunteers to help with set up, greet guests and serve the buffet-style food. Serving those who mourn is truly an act of mercy. Many families for whom our Bereavement Committee provides receptions have no idea how to greet those who attend a funeral or have no place large enough to host a reception. At times, a death is unexpected and the fami-ly is too distraught to plan such a event. It is a blessing for them to be able to simply walk over to the Lyceum after the funeral and have these details taken care of, so they can sit down, be consoled and thank their guests.

If you are interested or have questions, contact Kitty Guy at [email protected] or 703.765.9478.

NEW SEVEN SISTERS APOSTOLATE Would you be interested in spiritually supporting our pastor, Father Hathaway, with your prayers? The Basilica of Saint Mary is hosting a new Seven Sisters Apostolate comprised of women of our parish who commit to offering a Holy Hour on a specific day each week for the needs and intentions of our pastor. If you are interested, please email Mary Beth Riordan at [email protected]. Not only will Father be blessed through your prayers, you also will reap “eternal benefits” by spending time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. (You can learn more about the Seven Sisters Apostolate at https://sevensistersapostolate.org/home.) We currently have six sisters committed to praying for our pastor and need one more for Sunday. Perhaps for Sunday you can arrive 30 minutes early for Mass and then remain in the Basilica an extra 30 minutes? After we have filled all the seven spots for the pastor, we will begin forming groups to pray for our parochial vicars too.

Beneath the cross, one learns to love. — Saint Padre Pio

March 17 – Saint Patrick, Bishop. Born c. 389 of Roma-no-British origin, perhaps in Wales. The famous Lorica (Lat., “breastplate”), a work praising Christ, is probably his. Patron of Ireland. March 19 is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Foster Father of Jesus. Saint Joseph is depicted in both of those roles in artwork found here at the Basilica.

A white Italian marble statue of Saint Joseph holding the Infant Jesus is located on the left side of our sanctuary. Under the direction of Fr. Louis J. Smet, pastor here from 1915 to 1927, the statue was pur-chased in Italy in 1920 and placed above the smaller altar (since removed) that was located on the north side of the sanctuary. Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus also are depicted in a stained glass window inside the stairwell leading to the choir loft. One of the three large paintings on the ceiling of the Basilica depicts the Death of Saint Joseph with Je-sus and the Blessed Virgin Mary at his side. Tradition has long held that Saint Joseph died in the arms of Jesus and Mary and therefore is revered as the patron of a “happy death” – one in which the Sacraments have been provided. This painting is located just above the narthex at the Royal Street entrance of the Basilica. While the artist is not certain, its style is similar to the Most Holy Trinity painting on the ceil-ing near the sanctuary. Both are believed to be the work of Alexandria artist F.S. Shuman.

A stained glass window on the south side of the nave, or main section, of the Basilica depicts Saint Joseph as part of the Holy Family. This window was dedicated in memory of Thomas N. Scott and fami-

ly. Scott, originally from Ireland, owned a carpentry shop (like Saint Joseph!) and worked on the church in 1883 when it was enlarged under the direction of local architect Philip N. Dwyer. He also was the contractor who built the parish Lyceum and was responsible for renovations of the church in 1894-95

5TH SUNDAY ROSARY

The Knights of Columbus Council #459 invites all parishioners to participate in

the 5th Sunday Rosary for vocations and purification of the Church on March 29,

immediately following the 5 p.m. Mass (approximately 6 p.m.)

in the Basilica. The Knights will be joined by members of the Basilica

Rosary Society, Legion of Mary and Serra International in praying the

Glorious Mysteries. A reception will follow in the Fr. Rankin House

at 314 Duke Street. The next 5th Sunday Rosary will be

on May 31. Please mark your calendars as we come together to pray for the intercession of our Blessed Mother.

The Catholic University Chamber Choir returns to the Basilica April 2 with a concert of works especially curated to mark the Lenten Season.

Highlights include Brahms' setting of the penitential Psalm 51, Schaffe in mir, Gott, and Bach's choruses

from Cantata 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis and Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele?

The third great "B" is also represented with Beetho-ven's hauntingly beautiful Elegischer Gesang, featur-ing the choir with strings. The choir also will perform

several engaging modern works, such as György Orbán's Pange Lingua, Steven Paulus’

Pilgrim's Hymn, Duruflé's Ubi Caritas, Poulenc’s Vinea mea electa, plus the world premiere of

Benjamin Yuly's Crux fidelis. The choir is the University's premiere choral ensemble, made up of undergraduate and graduate students. Timothy McDonnell has been its conductor and artistic director since 2016.
