Rik Close SC328

Hi to you all in mighty Subaland, I hope no one got washed awayfrom all that rain.

We are now at the half way point in the club year. And I have to saythat all is going well. But it would real nice if we had some moremembers, so its up to you guys out there, if you see someone orknow of someone with a Suby give them a club card and get tojoin the club.

There is one thing I would like to say as to trip reports. If you havebeen given a trip report to do, PLEASE DO SO. The club Mag isalready about 5 months behind with trip reports, and when theEditor does not get reports on time it puts an extra load on him.At this time, as I write this, Dwayne has very little to put in thismonths Mag as in trip reports. And that’s what we all like to readabout, RIGHT ??????

So if you have been given a trip PLEASE get them in on time.

The Committee is also looking for idea’s as to what to do for thisyears Birthday party ??? If you have an idea tell someone on thecommittee about it as we need to make a start on this.

Well that’s all from me this time.Until next time, may the six star Force be with you.

BE COOL AND GO HARD!!

DARWIN TO ADELAIDEby Ron Penfold

I am now back from competing in the 2003 World Solar Challenge with theSouthern Cross College Solar Racing Team. MY involvement started 2 yearsago when Southern Cross College approached me at the end of the 2001WSC and asked me if I was interested in helping them with the 2003 entry,of course I said yes, I didn’t know what I had let my self in for.

My initial involvement was to design the electrical systems in the car. I thensuggested to QUT that this would make a excellent final year project for anelectrical engineering student. QUT agreed and a student was given theproject to design and build the electrical systems and I became the studentssupervisor. For most of this year I worked on the solar car on my RDOsevery second Friday and in the last 2 months I was there every Friday. Italso became apparent that funding was a big issue and I tried unsuccessfullyto gain sponsor ship from QUT to cover me and a QUT vehicle to go on theWSC. In the end I took annual leave and drove the Challenger as the primarysupport vehicle. I became the largest sponsor and the car was named“Solaron Southern Exposure”.

Initialy SCC were going to build a whole new vehicle, but due to time andmoney restraints they decided to use the chassis from the 1999 WSC andthe solar array from the 2001 WSC and fit a new motor and controller. Afterinitial testing it was realised that the solar array was not big enough and wedecided to change classes which allowed us the increase our array by 50%.

The car weighted 200kg less an 80kg driver. The motor was a 5Kw brushlessDC powered from a 48V Li-Ion battery pack loaned by QUT. The solar arraywas 1.8meters wide and 5meters long. The array was made up of 3 parallelstrings producing 100volts and 5amps each feeding into a charge controllermaximiser. Top speed was 60kph with a continuous speed of 30kph.

We cut it fine with construction of the car, in fact we were putting final toucheson the car the day before we left. This was not due to our bad planning but thesupply of components from others.

We left Brisbane for Darwin on Thursday and arrived in Darwin on Monday. We spent the rest of the week preparing the car, passed scrutineering andhandling tests first go and then drove the car to Jabiru as a final road test.Sunday morning we left Darwin in grid position 20 for Adelaide 3000kms south. It took us 10 days, the winner did it in 4 days, they averaged 97kph, doing140kph in NT and limited to 110kph in SA. We had a few problems, the cloudmoved in at lunch time on day 1 and stayed until the end of day 2. A head windblew for the next few days, the front suspension collapsed 100kms north ofPort Augusta, which required a 300km round trip for parts. It rained from PortAugusta to Adelaide, but we had a tail wind and this enabled us to cross thefinish line in 20th position on Tuesday, having travelled 1000 solar kms. We leftAdelaide next morning for Brisbane, we overnighted in Cobar. Next morningthe school bus blew an engine and alternative transport hadto be found. The students were put on a coach for Brisbaneand I towed the solar car trailer back to Brisbane.

At the finish line in Adelaide.

I filled a bottle with water from Darwin harbour and carried all the way toAdelaide and poured it into Spencer Gulf. I had one flat tyre outside Charleville,Later when I checked the tyre pressures they were at 50psi, Bob Jane haddone a wheel alignment and rotation a couple of days before I left. Best fuelconsumption was 11L/100, tail wind, worst 20L/100, towing solar trailer, average 15L/100. Fuel cost up to $1.20 per litre at Barkley roadhouse in NT,average price was $0.95 per litre.

SCC is already planning for the 2005 WSC, will I be part of the team? AskGlenys!

EDITOREDITOREDITOREDITOREDITOR’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORT’S REPORTThank you to all the people who have responded to my pleas for more tripreports. There are still some outstanding, you know who you are.

Sorry for some of the information published in the What’s On last month. The contact details for the trip leader for the Amamoor trip were incorrect. You would think that I could at least get my own number right. I work withnumbers all day, I should have done better. I only found out about theincorrect number from a visitor from the WA Subaru 4wd club, who ishopefully going to be at the Amamoor day trip after the rally.

Sorry also to John Shera, I was going to use your trip report to the Simpson, but it got bumped at the last minute, maybe next month.

The committee has once again kept the fees at the same level, this canonly be done with more money coming in. The only way for us as a club toget more money is from more members. So if you see any Subaru’s onthe streets, put a club card with your contact details on them, and sell yourclub.

See you out there,

Dwayne Boyton SC481
