Maude is silver and creamy white, with some black hairs flecking her coat. She weighs about 15# and loves standing on her hind legs, to greet people. Her tail wags continually. Our celebration news for this pair is that Snowball’s tumor biopsy came back with a report of benign; the little girl had a massive, untreated infection – but no cancer. Both dogs are gaining weight, wagging their tails, and asking the permanent dogs at their foster home, “Hey, are you really going to finish what’s in your bowl, or do you wanna share?” (also enjoying modeling their new jimmies)

March 2007 Hoping for a Home

The March newsletter is sponsored by Phyllis and Ron Ettinger: To all the volunteers, foster families, adopting families, and lovers of Shih Tzu. Our heartfelt gratitude.

Nikki is a sweet boy, ready for his own home. He enjoys playing with toys and gets along well with other dogs.

Maizie is 10 months old. She was kept in a crate, isolated from the family, because they did not like her. In her foster home, Maizie runs about the rooms and yard, looking for excitement (and creating it).

Fozzie is bouncy, hunting for someone to love, and loves to play with toys. He tried driving his rescuer home (paws on steering wheel, eyes looking out the window), giving kisses with abandon. Adopt Fozzie before he gets a license and asks some cute young female out on a backseat date.

Gigi is now watching basketball, playing with her foster siblings (ferrets – she loves ferrets) and hoping to find a date (Fozzie asked her, but he’s a state away). She also loves tossing toys, digging through the toy box, and dragging toys around. If you have a toy looking for a playmate, your problem is solved: Gigi can help you.

Goldie is a lively girl who can also have her shy moments. She is healthy, vetted, and thinking about how nice it would be to have a home of her own.

Page 3: March 2007 Hoping for a Home - NBSTR Paws and HandsThis little senior fluffball is Bambi, freshly rescued from an IA puppy mill. Bambi loves to look out windows, and snuggle with people

Humpy is about 7 months old, a Peke-Shih Tzu mix, who came into rescue from an overcrowded shelter where he would have been euthanized. He is mostly housetrained.

This little senior fluffball is Bambi, freshly rescued from an IA puppy mill. Bambi loves to look out windows, and snuggle with people. Give Bambi a window of her very own.

Okie is a sweetheart who sleeps with his foster mom (and siblings), sits on the couch, shares food, and makes friends with the next door neighbors who come over to visit. He also loves plush toys.

Mickie came into rescue very underweight. He takes food carefully, wants to snuggle with people. He is 4 years old.

Millie is a gentle older lady who enjoys life. She’s looking for a home where she can snuggle onto a lap, enjoy looking out the window, and have her very own family.

Buttons loves you. This 3 year old male came out of a puppy mill, and is wasting no time in winding himself around your ankles and your heart. Buttons has sparkling eyes, like round buttons, and a round black nose.

Sparky is a gentle, shy boy who loves tummy rubs and snuggling - he will often go to the door of the bedroom and ask to go in long before it is bedtime.

Franklin has conquered Cushings Disease (he is on maintenance and is doing beautifully) and his little swagger says how proud he is of himself! If you have treats in abundance and only girl dogs for him to share lap space with, Franklin's your dog!

Spring is coming!

Share it with a

friend.

Willy was found wandering. His “owners” are still wandering, but Willy would like a real home of his own. He is housetrained, gets along with other dogs, and enjoys smiling from a safe, warm, dry place.

JuJu, aka Junior, came into rescue to be an angel for those in need. When his owner could no longer care for him. Junior gives love: he touches noses with formerly abused dogs who were unwilling to trust; he snuggles gently with people around him.

MerryBelle is happy, healthy, and housetrained. She gets along great with everyone and other dogs & cats. MerryBelle loves to eat and always wants to be near and with you. She is blind but that doesn't stop her.

Page 4: March 2007 Hoping for a Home - NBSTR Paws and HandsThis little senior fluffball is Bambi, freshly rescued from an IA puppy mill. Bambi loves to look out windows, and snuggle with people

Opal / Evie is a thin little puppy mill girl who enjoys snuggling with her foster family. Help Evie feel full of food and love: give her a home.

Eli is a 2 year old, honey colored boy, who greets visitors and wiggles with happiness. He’s a little shy and wants to be with his person. (Velcro!)

Tyler (Ty) was physically abused kept in a crate. In his foster home copper-colored Ty is submissive and quiet, rolling over for tummy rubs, walking on a harness, relaxing. He is looking for a home with kind people.

Pearl is a sweetie rescued by our friends at Blackhawk Veterinary Clinic. This quiet, gentle lady was found as a stray. She soaks up kindness and treats like a sponge. Pearl is housetrained and healthy. She also picks up clothing, so if you are looking for someone to tidy up after you, ask for Pearl.

Brat is a 3 year old, who charms even people who are not sure they like small dogs. He is loving and sweet. He does not like sitting still to have his picture taken.

Blossom is very affectionate, devoted to toys, and will tip the toy box to get them scattered all over. Her former family threw her from a moving car; Blossom’s desire to be with people, is part of her making sure she’s not again left behind.

Spanky came into rescue because his family no longer wanted him. He is learning to play with the other dogs in his foster home – running about happily and snuggling with his friends – but he would like a home of his own.

Ivy is an older girl who seems to particularly enjoy men: her foster day especially. She likes following someone around the house, participates in chores, and is a great help in the kitchen (talking to her foster dad while he has a snack). Ivy also loves classical music (but not as much as she loves her foster dad).

Blaze is a tan and white cuddler. He is loving and eager to please and, after 9 years in a puppy mill, is just so grateful for even the smallest of comforts. And socks. Blaze is a sock hound. If your socks need someone to love them, Blaze is the dog for you.

Pepe was abandoned at age 16 because her owner was working and didn’t have time for her any more. She is quiet and wants to snuggle.

Max is a 2 year old Shih Tzu poodle mix. He came into rescue matted, got a “crew cut,” and his soft grey fur has poufed out. He loves to run and also to sit in his foster mom’s lap. His face and ears are black; his body a medium gray.

Katie is a completely housetrained, 8-9 year old female with a sweet disposition. She is on eye drops and gets along with everyone. At her foster home, she plays and snuggles.

Precious: spine

Precious is a 5# dog that spent the first 10 years of her life being over bred in a puppy mill. She was sold to another breeder, who realized this little lady was too debilitated to continue breeding and who gave her to a friend who wanted her for a pet. This person decided that Precious was not what she wanted in a pet, so she got rid of the dog. When she came into rescue, Precious was emaciated (her little hip bones protrude against the skin on nearly bald hips), with infected eyes. Despite a less than wonderful life, Precious has a sweet nature, and comes willing to her foster mom, with a wagging tail. She is housetrained, and her coat looks as though it will be white, gold, and dark brown in color.

Happy is coming around although his name is still more of a goal than a reality. He is a little happier right now because he finally trusted me enough to get the mats off of him and give him a bath. He has very large splayed feet with huge pads that were cracked and had to be sore. I rubbed vasoline into them and he didn't seem to mind. He is following me everywhere but is still afraid and runs from me. I have removed his harness and put his leash on his collar. He still needs the leash on constantly because it is the only way I can catch him. He doesn't do steps so I have to carry him down to the back yard to go potty. His potty skills leave a lot to be desired but I think once he learns the stairs, that will get better too. He comes in the doggy door but because he can't go down the stairs, he doesn't go out. If I am outside, he peeks out the door to see where I am. Too cute! It is going to be awhile before he is ready to be adopted, but hopefully he will progress much faster now that he is clean. He was very good on the grooming table and never once snapped at me regardless of what I was touching. ~ Carol

Punkin is an apricot colored Male Teacup Poodle, 2.5 years old, and 3#. Punkin was purchased at an Amish miller @ swap meet, where he was in a chicken crate with 5 other dogs. The backyard breeder who bought him decided she had no time or money for a dog that could not immediately be of use to her, so she got rid of him. Punkin’s hind legs are bent, and he will be evaluated by a vet to see what can be done to help him walk normally. Meanwhile, the little boy bounces about his foster home, enjoying life, and demonstrating a wonderful spirit of fun, mischief and love.

Rescue and money New Beginnings depends on the generosity of our foster families, our members, and our donors. Without funds and foster homes, we cannot rescue dogs. The average veterinary cost for one of our dogs is $425. The average adoption donation is $250. How do we leap the gap? Love, faith, donors, and belief that what we do makes the world a better place, not only for the dogs, but for the people they love.

When Blossom was 1 year old, the bone in her jaw was smashed. At 9 years old, she was thrown from the window of a moving car, resulting in a break at the front of her jaw. In between, she was in a puppy mill. Blossom’s face and smile are crooked, her medical expenses have totaled $1,462.57. This survivor was disfigured for life, but is still a beautiful once she knows a person loves her, and she is safe. Was she worth all of the money spent to make her well? Her current foster mom says, Every time she shows me how much she loves me the answer is a resounding, absolute YES!

Violet

Violet with her sister Daisy

Violet is a small six-year-old Shih Tzu, weighing 10 pounds with a black and white coat. After she was rescued, the doctors noticed that her patella (kneecaps) on both legs were not gliding in and out of the trochlear groove, (femur, bone) causing pain, a limp and abnormal bowing or twisting of the legs. These operations are expensive, so why spend the money, just put the dog down, someone wondered. Why not give a dog a chance? Violet had one leg operated on in July 2006 and the second leg will be operated on in May of 2007. She is much happier, loves to play, and loves to run around the yard. One leg is still twisted and makes it hard for her to run and squat, but we know that leg will be corrected soon. Then she can really run! Thanks to all the wonderful people who donate money to rescue groups like ours! People give an otherwise healthy dog a second chance to live a long and happy life. Thanks to people like you, dogs like Violet will run and walk with their owners without the pain or limp or future complications like arthritis. The love she gives cannot even come close to a dollar figure. Donations make it possible for us to adopt-out a perfect, loving, healthy dog, and that is our goal! Judi

Love is priceless; rescue costs money. But you don’t get to reach love unless you are willing to commit.

Mind, Body, Spirit and another way to help New Beginnings… Dear Friends, Some of you may know me from the Good-For-You Days at Unity North Church. I’m writing to you because I feel guided to share my gifts. I do self-development coaching and intuitive energy work from the heart, which integrates spirit, mind, emotions and body to assist in stress reduction, mental and physical healing and recovery. By utilizing many cultural and natural elements such as work with the chakras, healing cards, stones, breath, medicine wheel, and spiritual guidance my sessions tap into the wisdom of each individual. This is not my career, and therefore, I will not be charging for my services. My dream for this is twofold – I’d like to offer my gifts to you and I would like to fundraise for my favorite charities. I would like to raise money for: 1. Unity North Church - a community of diverse individuals intently devoted to spiritual growth. www.unitynorthchurch.org 2. Women For Women International – They focus specifically on women survivors of war. Their goal is to help women move from victims to survivors to active citizens. They provide sponsorship programs, victim awareness, leadership education and vocational skills training, micro-credit loans and access to other economic opportunities through income generating opportunities. They are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. www.womenforwomen.org 3. New Beginnings Shih Tzu dog rescue - a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Donations help volunteers rescue, foster, rehabilitate and re-home dogs that would otherwise remain homeless and suffering. www.nbstr.org If you would like a session with me, please call me at 612-961-8278. & Friends Annie the ferret recently crossed the Bridge. Though she was not a New Beginnings dog, Annie and her ferret friends spent many months training our dogs, helping our dogs realize that we all live on this earth together, and providing entertainment for her mom Chris. Following are Annie stories. God Bless and Godspeed, Annie; we’ll see you again on the Other Side. I had no clue the ferrets like to hide, until I started looking for them and they were no where to be found. I finally ended up pulling the couch away from the wall and turning it upside down. They had ripped a small hole in it and all climbed in, of course, far out of reach. It took forever to coax them back out again. After the third day of playing this game, which I'm sure they enjoyed enormously and I did not, I finally ripped the entire bottom cover off the couch - only to find about 3 cups of dry dog food AND no less than 50 Milkbones (and here I was thinking the dog's appetites had increased while I wasn't home). It was an old couch given to me by a friend, and who looks at the bottom of the couch anyway? I did finally buy new couch, loveseat and chair to match and immediately took the feet of all of them so the ferrets couldn't get underneath to tear holes in the new furniture. After buying the new furniture, I sent the old couch on to a neighbor who was in need. It sat in their garage for months before they put it in their apartment. One day, the neighbor comes over with a handful of keys: 3 full sets of keys (about 12), including one of those mini-garage door openers that had disappeared from my house. They were keys that belonged to a condo that I had owned at the time and had to call a locksmith in to replace all the locks that i no longer had keys for. The little thieves ended up costing me almost $200 for new locks, keys and another door opener. The neighbor had heard "jingling" in one of the arm rests and shook the couch until the keys finally dropped out. Of course, they were totally useless to me by then. I think the only thing that saved me from making them into sandwiches (my usual empty threat to them) was there wasn't enough meat on the 3 of them, combined, to take the trouble. ~ Chris

Welcome Home:

Stella and Scout have found their forever home, complete with lots of new toys. Scout loves to play fetch, but his favorite position is in

his new dad’s arms, belly up. Stella snuggles under her new owner’s chin, where she makes happy Tzu noises. They have a match made in Heaven.

Holly went on a hv that was love at first sight. Holly pranced around checking everything out including one of two cats. She was amazing hardly shy at all & spending lots of time in Mary’s lap and/or arms. She will be one pampered babe . She found her furever mom.~ Ann & Don

My name is Anita, I am proud to say that I am Cooper's new mom. I absolutely love him and so does everyone else who meets this big

guy! I thank God every day for bringing this special dog into my life! I think Cooper is pretty happy with his new home. He spends his days playing with his new Grandma and look-a-like cousin, Callee. He's always wagging his tail when I come home from work. He's been getting lots of new toys and chewies from me and my friends at work. And he gets lots of hugs and belly rubs. He is a very sweet boy! Thank you to everyone at New Beginnings! Sweet 9-year-old Nellie found her forever home with the Gwicks! They met her at Petco in Delafield on Sunday and it was truly love at first sight. Nellie made herself at home and nearly wagged her pretty tail off!! In another example of events working out as they should, Nellie wasn’t supposed to be at Petco in Delafield on that Sunday; it was an 11th hour decision by Emily to take her. THANK YOU Emily for helping this lovely little girl find such a wonderful home! [Emily is already adopted and much loved.]

Bucky chose his family. Bucky dog went to visit people who were looking for a dog, and fell asleep in the arms of one of his new family.

Further adventures of our dogs in their forever homes…

We are having a wonderful time with Bear. He really loves to play fetch with anyone who is around. Bear chases squirrels in our yard on a daily basis. He also loves his daily walks. Except for during this cold snap, he goes with us when we do errands. He patiently waits in the car while we shop. Bear sleeps with us on our water bed every night. We can't thank you enough for this wonderful addition to our family. Sincerely, Jim & Adrienne

It’s been almost a year since we got Stetson - he is still doing really good. Willy and him are the best of buddies and he loves all his

squeaky toys too. He doesn't like the snow and cold though too much, starts to shake (even with his sweater on). He's definitely a Texas dog! He runs out and does his business quickly and runs back in the house, while Willy stays outside and rolls and plays in the snow and won't come back in. He is a REALLY GOOD BOY and we all love him so much. When Tom gets home from a road trip, Stetson sits on his lap for about a 1/2 hour straight, just snuggling with him. It is very cute. ~ Sally

Letter sent to Mary Ann, foster mom of Sandy: I am so thankful that your rescue took Sandy in and then that you became her foster

mom. She is not shy at all at our house. She's a wonderful dog and we are enjoying her sooooo much!! We've left her alone several times now for as much as a few hours at a time, and she has been absolutely fine. She really does love those rawhide bones. We love her so much and she loves us back. Oh, and what a greeting we get when we come home! ~ Patti

Note to Trish, foster mom of Molly: Just a note to let you know that Molly continues to worm her way into our hearts! She's a joy, and such a sweetheart. She has the most dexterous paws, and uses them for everything from getting our attention (paw on the arm or knee - what ever is closest) to batting around a ball that she's claimed as her favorite toy. She'll go tearing down the hallway in pursuit of the thrown ball, and when she gets it, she'll lay down with it between her paws and then place one paw on the ball and sort of gently roll it around. ~ Anne and Dave As far the Big Honkin' Puppy...we absolutely love him! He is the sweetest thing and he has the cutest looks. I love his big head and paws. So adorable. He's double Callee's size and oh, does she love her new cousin too! They play together really well. Callee seems so much happier. I think she really missed Chelsea, she wouldn't eat any treats or play with toys. And my mom...she is crazy for COOPER too! I'm not changing Cooper's name. I call him Cooperman...kinda like Superman. ~ Anita

Just a note to let all of you know that Mitzie has been a joy to us. She shares her love with everyone. When our granddaughter is here

we do not exist because those two have bonded and love each other. Mitzie loves to take rides and then come home and snuggle. Thanks for having Mitzie there for us. ~ Jack and Patricia
