EGZ needs a Newsletter Editor for 2013

Can you find time to produce three or four newsletters a year for the EGZ zone? Sadly I have a huge year ahead of me with work and travel both overseas and interstate and don’t think I can do justice to the newsletter.

It is a great way to meet people and get involved. Please contact Val Armstrong if you are interested. Members are now sending in articles so you don’t have to write everything.

Templates for newsletters make it easy - just add the content. I have done the newsletters with a Mac but a PC would be fine. Call me if you want to talk about it.

2012 at Boolarra

Congratulations to Boolarra Pony Club on an outstanding effort in hosting a State Workshop last year. There were 40 coach participants and about another 40 riders and parents.

Kate Wilson from PCAV was very impressed; she reported that 3 sessions with run with Mary Longden, Sally Francis and Heather Wilson. They also sold lots of books so there is a bit of coaching interest around.

Boolarra PC were wonderful hosts; very organised, friendly and provided awesome catering for lunch. They have some good facilities and relationships with the other local sports organisations and the Shire, which is really positive.

2013 at Bushy Park

The 2013 Workshop will be held in conjunction with the first EGZ Development squad weekend on 21 and 22 April.

The sessions being offered are: • Gear Check Comfort and

Safety by Pam Davey Master Saddler and Clare Lewin PCAV Executive Officer,

• Innovative Coaching Methods for younger riders on the flat, by Sally Francis NCAS Level 1 coach,

• Lungeing by Sally Francis NCAS Level 1 coach, and

• NCAS Workbook Information and assistance by Kate Wilson NCAS Level 1.

PCAV held its Dressage and Showjumping Championships at Yarrambat Pony Club Grounds last weekend (February 23rd & 24th). The competition was held over two days, the weather was hot but not oppressive. The competition is an individual one for Grade 1 and A Grade, and a team event for Grades 2 & 3, and B & C Grades. East Gippsland Zone competed in all classes except Grade 1 Dressage. RESULTSA Grade SHOWJUMPING. This was the highlight of the weekend for EGZ. Chelsea Hair (Bushy Park) jumped well

on Saturday and then won both her classes on Sunday to earn an emphatic win. Holly Webb (Stratford) finished fifth, and Jen Massey Moe) came eighth. Holly Webb on a second horse and Melissa Backman (Bushy Park) also competed.

B Grade SHOWJUMPING.Emma Hair, Kahli Higgins, Chelsea Hair (All Bushy Park) and Kiona Guillot (Lakes Entrance) persisted all day and were rewarded with the fifth sash.

C Grade SHOWJUMPING.The team of Liesel Nunn (Bairnsdale), Georgia Goff (Sale), Taylor Brown (Moe) and Sarah Hair (Bushy Park) jumped well but just seemed to drag rails in each round. In a tight competition they finished eighth.

Grade 2 DRESSAGE. The team of Caitlyn Fischer (Bairnsdale), Shari Woerz (Orbost) and Shaynee Zappelli (Lakes Entrance) all did good tests and finished fifth; this is our best result at this level for several years.

Grade 3 DRESSAGE. Brooke Wheeler (Morwell), Claire Hammond (Bairnsdale) and Lillian McCann were all at their first State Championships, competed well and finished eighth.

Thanks to Peter Favalaro for the report and photos.

Annual Rocky Trophy for Maddie Fullgrabe

The Annual Rocky Trophy was held at the Bairnsdale Pony Club Grounds for the Christmas break up Rally. Each year at the Christmas Rally, the club holds its annual mounted dress up competition for rider and horse combined, which has a different theme each year.

Rocky was 13.2hh white pony owned by the Lloyd family and was a long time regular pony at Bairnsdale Pony Club. He taught each of the four Lloyd girls to ride, and was also ridden in the Moomba parade at Melbourne, dressed up as a drummer boy.

Rocky also took part in a play at Nagle College for three days, climbing the stairs each night without fuss. On the final night when the curtain closed, he poked his head through and let out a neigh much to the delight of the audience. He was one of those brilliant all round ponies.

The Lloyd family donated the perpetual trophy to the club in memory of their beloved pony who was estimated to be 34 years old when he passed, a truly wonderful Pony Club pony. The winner of the trophy each year is judged by several elements

which combine to give an overall result. It’s a lot of fun each year with riders having to put their thinking caps on to come up with a unique dress up which involves their horse.

The theme for the Rocky Trophy for 2012 was Cartoon Character. Maddie  Fullgrabe  on  Prince  (above)  dressed  as  Rapunzel  placed  first  in  their  age  group  and  won  the  Rocky  trophy  for  2012

Fia and Alfie win the 2012 Jack and Nancy Williamson Equestrian Bursary

YOUNG RIDER Sofia Perks, 15, of Longford, is inaugural awardee of the Jack and Nancy Williamson equestrian bursary.

Sofia was selected from entrants within the East Gippsland zone of 25 pony clubs, from Trafalgar to Mallacoota. A member of Sale Pony Club she began riding at age nine and is competing at club level in grade three and, with Sale and District Show Jumping Club, in C Grade with a new horse, Good Golly Miss Molly.

Sofia’s ambition is to represent the Sale club at zone and State levels and “my dream…I want to proudly ride for Australia at the Olympics.”

Eldest daughter of Gareth and Sandra Perks, Sophia receives a framed certificate and $500 cheque to be presented at a an evening organised by Sale Rotary Club, manager of the funding, donated by Nancy Williamson, of Maffra.

Nancy and her late husband Jack contributed a combined 120 years’ to coaching young riders, in their later years grandchildren of early pupils, are fondly remembered by many in the pony club movement and beyond.

Last November, a combined $700 cheque from the Williamson fund and Rotary club was presented to the young rider event winner at the Elms Classic Showjumping event in Sale. The Classic young rider award will be repeated later this year, in Sale, and applications from pony club riders for the 2014 bursary, again $500, will close on December 31 next.Inquiries may be made to David Tulloch, Rotary Club of Sale, phone (03) 51456576, e-mail [email protected], or Val Armstrong, PCAV, East Gippsland Zone, (03) 5628 7777, e-mail [email protected].

2013 Bursary ApplicationsThe Bursary seeks to enable the Awardee to further their equestrian pursuit and is valued at $500 (plus framed Certificate of Recognition). The application form can be downloaded from the EGZ web site and should be completed and posted to “Equestrian Bursary”, Rotary Club of Sale, P.O. Box 76, Sale, 3850, no later than December 31 in current year.

Any penetrating injury to the bottom of the foot can be very serious and potential life threatening if not investigated and treated appropriately. Common causes include- nails- glass- wire in the ground- old broken steel fence pickets- and even shale rocks The horse will often be immediately lame with the degree of lameness becoming more severe over the next 24-48 hours as infection takes hold. Penetrating injuries are not always obvious when looking at the sole and requires careful examination. Initially an assessment is made to determine the location and angle of penetration and the likely type of injury. Treatment will often involve the removal of a small section of the sole around the penetration, application of a poultice material and aggressive antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication. The response to these treatments over 1-3 days is an important factor in determining if additional evaluation and treatment is required. X-rays can be taken with a metal probe showing the depth and angle or penetration. If the pedal bone, navicular bone or associated joint structures are involved then surgery will be needed to avoid permanent debilitation and lameness. The earlier these discoveries are made and appropriate treatment started the better the prognosis for full recovery.

Modifying Jump Cups into Break-away Jump Cups by Jim Brown, Moe PC

1. Cut the curved metal jump support off the jump cup

2. Cut tracking to the right length (2 holes per cup)

3. Weld the ‘two arms’ from the old jump cup to the tracking making sure you weld them at the same distance and angle as they were attached to the original metal cup.

4. Attach the breakaway jump cup.

In October 2009 I attended a South East Victoria Equine Network workshop on horse management and fires. Some of the points raised during the workshop are included below for you to think about. Many of the horse owners and vets at the workshop had been involved in the Back Saturday fires and offered advice on their experience which you may find interesting. Please note that this article is not a substitute for professional advice but is designed to share advice that may be useful. Dr Viv Stockil has generously edited the veterinary advice section.

When evacuating your travel time may double due to road blocks and safety vehicles being on the road and reduced visibility. Plan your exit strategy carefully. You need to have a safe place to move to. Consider the water and feed supplies, fencing and facilities as your stay may end up longer than you planned. If your pasture is burnt out there are problems that can arise such as • Increased likelihood of colic

due to the change in nutrition from pasture to substitutes

• The quality of donated hay which can be variable

• Potential increase in the incidence of sand colic resulting from the increased stocking rates in temporary

yards if the fences are burnt. This can also lead to increased worm burdens that need treating.

• Psyllium husk was recommended at around half to one cup for a Thoroughbred for 3 to 5 days.

• Possible need to include a vitamin/mineral/trace element mix in the horses diet

• Consider buying in drinkable water if necessary

• Tetanus If you are staying at home and only have paddocks available select the largest open space possible with minimal fuel remembering that the road verge tends to burn the hottest. Horses can be turned onto sand arenas but be aware of the risk that radiant heat poses. The advice was to remove rugs and halters, particularly nylon ones that will melt in a fire. In extreme fire risk situations the advice was to trim the mane and tail. If you are leaving your horse in a livestock exchange or sale-yard attach ID to your horse. If you are moving horses on a day of extreme heat the horses must have access to water. Consider using electrolytes or a recharge paste. If your horses are burnt during a fire there are some steps you can take whilst waiting for veterinary assistance. These include- Eyes: bathe the horseʼs eyes

with a mild saline solution (I

teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of clean water) if the eyes are weepy, cloudy, puffy or sore. Veterinary assistance may be necessary to treat corneal ulcers and eye injuries.

- Respiratory issues can present a few days after the fire. Veterinary assistance can help by treating secondary infections with antibiotics and providing the horse with pain relief.

- Burns particularly to the thin skinned areas (head, muzzle, belly, groin, under the tail). Horses with burns to the legs and coronet band are difficult to resolve and have a poor prognosis. Similar to burns on people apply cold water at low pressure to the affected area. Concentrate on the thin skinned areas. Burns can ooze and weep so you need to take great care with hygiene.

What people stressed was that what you saw on day one after the fire was not always indicative of the real damage.

You need to monitor the horse very carefully in the weeks following a bushfire.
