Go to... http://www.gcrailway.co.uk /news/#8905 T he recent spell of adverse weather, coupled with what is normally a quiet time in the “Railway Year” has been bothering me somewhat, with regard to finding something to report this month, however, as usual, at the last minute, so to speak material arrived in the nick of time. On the staff front I can report that Matthew Swain is to be upgraded to Platform Inspector, newcomer W. A Wooley who at present performs plat- form duties is to be trained as a Book- ing Clerk. As a station we are attempting to work closer with Green Acres, (with a possible re-vamp of this publication's appearance from time to time.) Bearing in mind that this was a mid- week event the recent “Villains and Superheroes” seems to have been very successful. Noel Bedder has been appointed Safety Officer to our station, and will report back to Eric Smith (Health & Safety Chairman.) The Power box situated at the end of platform two that has been causing some concern is to be rewired. As we look ahead, perhaps this would be an opportune moment to thank all past and present staff members, who have, and are, giving so much of their time and energy to ensure the smooth running of our station. There have been times when it has seemed an uphill struggle, but we can see now, that just over the horizon great things are in store, things that will put Leicester North Station firmly onto the Heritage Railway Map,so we are full of enthusiasm and expectation! Februaries “Mixed Traffic” event, which introduced our latest fleet addi- tion, 9F No. 92214 to the public attract- ed much interest, impressing one particular visitor from Manchester, who had travelled specifically to see this loco. February 4th saw a very important visit by a group of Heritage Lottery Fund Trustee’s who travelled to our station behind the aforementioned engine, and who were scheduled to attend a meet- ing at Greenacres to discuss the work that will be involved in the siting and construction of the proposed new Leicester Railway Museum. The results of that meeting have not, as yet, been announced, but are expected to be so, sometime in April. MAINTENANCE UPDATE! As reported previously there is not much activity at this time of the year regarding station maintenance. Usually a couple of maintenance staff will visit the station on a Wednesday just to keep a check on things but as soon as the grass needs attention then the whole team will be back in force. We still like to keep the station area tidy by picking up litter, starting at the entrance to the Sidings through to the railway bridge on Station Road. We continue to to cut up and prepare logs for the waiting room fire together with collecting the smokeless fuel that was kindly donated to the railway. The wood that was lying on the embankment at the end of the platform has been gathered up and sawn into fire logs. We have had a good sort out in the container which is situated by the en- trance gate and this has resulted in giving us more space. Some weeks ago we had an electrical problem due to water entering our brick built building at the beginning of the platform(see column one) The Loughborough maintenance team came and sealed the roof where necessary and we thank them for that. So, in the near future we will need to clear out the gutter at the rear of the station building, prune the roses, repair the damaged seat on the platform and start cutting back the briars on the embankment opposite the station. The spring bulbs are all shooting and we are looking forward to our display of daffodils and tulips around the station area. Three members of the public have shown interest in joining our maintenance team and we look forward to welcoming them on board. Mike Dunk, maintenance team leader. GREENACRES/ THE PLATFORM CAFÉ

Greenacres is an exciting new de-velopment at the Great Central

Railway. The railway has taken a leaseon a former community centre, situatedjust seconds from the end of the line atLeicester North station. There are twohigh quality buildings on site, one hasbecome a new family restaurant‘The Platform’ (see column one), The second is being developed as askills training centre which is alreadybeing used by apprentices. It’s all set within tranquil green sur-roundings – though right next toLeicester’s inner ring road and is easilyreached by turning onto The Sidings(and of course – by a direct train servicefrom Loughborough!) The buildingshave commanding views over the cityskyline. The site is close to other great touristattractions in Leicester including theNational Space Centre and The Muse-um of Technology at Abbey PumpingStation. To find Greenacres, leaveLeicester North station via the pedestri-an gate, turn right, walk down the hillslightly and turn through the gate on theleft.
