By Peter ChoiYes, I know the famous weather saying goes the

other way, but since we just started the Lunar NewYear of the Sheep, let’s use this month to really revup our mojo for the coming year. Here are threeways to end the month feeling like a king of thebusiness jungle.

The March 3 election is over, but our own elec-tion has just begun. The Chamber is looking for afew good men and women to join our Board ofDirectors.

Board meetings are every other month from 12noon to 1 p.m. on the second Monday. Anyone in-terested in stepping up to serve the business com-munity and engage with the city of Temple City, please contact us at 626-286-3101 for more infor-mation.

Our information seminar this month is “Get-

ting Started with Constant Contact.” Join us tolearn how this beats the heck out of blasting youre-mails randomly out into the ether. The free semi-nar is 12 noon to 1 p.m., March 11 in the ChamberBoard room.

Our debut “Eat & Meet” networking mixer inFebruary was a rousing success with over two dozenmembers and friends joining us at Phoenix Kitchenfor lunch. This month we are going south of theborder to El Ruizenor Grill, honored last year asthe Outstanding Restaurant in Temple City, fortastes of their delicious Oaxacan cuisine. Join usfrom 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., March 18.

In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar the Ro-man Emperor was famously warned to “Beware theIdes of March.” I suggest you instead be aware ofthe ideas for March we have presented and let theChamber help you build your own empire.

In addition to practicing inestate and trust law, I also prac-tice in tax law. Since tax seasonis upon us, here are two of themost important tax lawchanges:

Affordable Care Act (ACA)Although the Affordable

Care Act was signed in 2010,most of the provisions that af-fect us came into effect in 2014.As most of us know, in 2014, allindividual are required to havehealth care coverage or a validwaiver (i.e., religious reasons, federally recognized NativeAmerican tribes, etc.).

In the media we are told thatthe penalty for not having cov-erage is “small this year”-either$95 or 1% of household income

in excess of the filing threshold. However, if you are married

and together make $80,000,your penalty would be $800 ifyou and your spouse do nothave health insurance. Thishardly seems small. The penal-ties will continue to increase inthe years to come. In 2016, theminimum penalty will be $695or 2.5% of household income. That same family who is mak-ing $80,000 would now owe a$2,000 penalty.

Additionally, if you are re-ceiving premium assistancethrough California’s insuranceexchange, Covered California, you must file a tax return. Makesure to bring Form 1095-A toyour tax professional to ensure

that your subsidy is properlyreported to the IRS.

The Principal Residence Ex-clusion: Tax on Foreclosures orShort-Sales

The Tax Increase PreventionAct of 2014 extended to excludeprincipal residence cancellationof debt for tax year 2014. Thismeans that if you short sell yourhome or if you home is fore-

closed upon, you can excludeup to $2 million in cancellationof debt income.

This has not been extendedinto 2014 for the State of Cali-fornia. This also has not beenextended into 2015 federally.

As a result, as of now, if yourhouse is sold by foreclosure orshort sale, you will pay cancel-lation of debt income on the

sale of the house. You wouldpay ordinary income tax on theamount of debt that was dis-charged.

For instance, if $250,000 wasdischarged on a short sale, that$250,000 will be added as ordi-nary income on your tax return(for California in 2014 and Fed-erally in 2014 and 2015). Thiscould have catastrophic taxconsequences.

Please note, there is a chancethat Congress or the State ofCalifornia may extend the ex-clusion retroactively.

Pet of the Month

Make it your lucky day and make Peso a lucky dog

Adopt Peso - he qualifi es for Senior Adoption rate

Peso is an adorable Chihuahua boy about 8 years old and 8 pounds. He is a sweet boy who enjoys his walks to the park. He is good-natured and willing to please as he patiently posed for his St. Patrick’s Day photo.

Peso is happy to be petted and enjoys some quality lap time after an outing. He has a short coat that doesn’t require much grooming other than bathing and brushing on occasion. Although he is well cared for by our staff and volunteers, he would be grateful for a warm bed at night in a quiet, loving home with pet parents. He is not demanding and would give much love in return.

In honor of St. Patrick, who lived 74 years, we recognize our senior animals this month for their wisdom, experience, adaptability, willingness to learn new tricks and for easily loving and bonding with us. To celebrate, all senior pets will be available for the Senior Adoption rate of $39.

If you have a soft spot in your heart for senior dogs, please consider adopting Peso. He would be eternally thankful and loyal to you. He has earned a comfortable “retirement home” for his senior years.

Please visit from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday for a Meet and Greet with Peso. He resides at the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society, 851 E. Grand Ave., San Gabriel, located off San Gabriel Boulevard, north of Mission and south of Las Tunas.

His adoption fee of $39 includes his neuter surgery, a microchip, fi rst vaccinations and a free wellness check-up at a participating veterinarian. For more information about Peso, phone 626-286-1159.

The shelter provides animal control and licensing services to Temple City and is the friendly, local choice for low cost spay/neuter and vaccina-

tion services for your pet. Visit sgvhumane.org for more information about shelter services and photos of all our wonderful adoptable pets.

Peso is picture perfect in his St. Patrick’s Day fi nery.
