Looking Forward
“I Matter" Scholarship
The VILLA "I Matter" Scholarship will provide tuition assistance to graduating seniors enrolling in an accredited undergraduate program in the fall. The recipients of this scholarship are selected based on the applicant's demonstrated academic achievement, community service involvement, verbal communication skills, resume, and reference letter. Eligibility:
- Must be a high school senior - Carrying a minimum 2.5 GPA at the time of application - Accepted to and enrolling full-time in an accredited U.S. undergraduate program for fall Http://www.RuVilla.com/scholarships

Congratulations to Jessenia Chavez & Luiza
Diaz-Rodas; both were MICAPP Endowment
Scholarship winners! Each received $500.00
to be applied to the college of their choice.
The students submitted essays describing
obstacles they have overcome in their life
along with a nomination letter and high
school transcript for the application process.
Jessenia & Luiza will receive their awards at
the Student Leadership Conference from
February 24-26 in Grand Rapids, MI!
Important Fundraising Reminders:
Students interested in participating in the summer cultural trip to New York are expected to raise $350.00. At least
$175.00 must be raised from fundraising. The remaining $175.00 may be covered by a student/family payment.
Students are encouraged to fundraise the entire $350.00. All money is property of the GVSU travel fund and is
non-refundable.
March Community Service Event
Thursday, March 16, 2017
11:00 am—12:30 pm
Celebrate and honor the legacy of Latino civil rights activist, César E. Chávez.
GRPS will provide transportation to and from the event. UB staff will meet
students at the Cook Library Center. Students will be provided lunch following the
march. After lunch students will return to school for the remainder of the day.

Fundraising Opportunities
Sub sales were a success again in February! Many students participated and
raised funds for the summer cultural trip. This month we have added two
new candy boxes! Our first candy box is a variety pack of M&M products and
our second candy box is a variety of Skittles and Starbursts. Pick up a box in
your Upward Bound classroom to begin selling!
Tentative Summer Program Dates:
June 15—July 12
The Upward Bound staff is looking forward to the Summer Program and
already planning fun activities for students! We will be partnering with the Grand Rapids
Public Museum, the DJ Angus Research Vessel, and more to ensure students have a great
experience.
Summer Cultural Trip to N.Y.C.: July 14—July 18

MICAPP Student Leadership Conference:
SUMMER PROGRAM 2017:
Congratulations to Arlaina Cruz-Rivera, Julio Garcia, Alexis
Robles, and Murtaza Mohammed-Ali for scoring into the top
10 applicants for the MICAPP scholarships. The MICAPP Student Leadership conference
took place February 24—26. 15 students will be represented Upward Bound and
participated in workshops, social activities and the scholarship banquet.

April 19, 2017 —> “Immigration Simulation”
Lead by Kelsey Herbert, a guest speaker from the Office of Social Justice; the simulation will take place
from 3:30-5pm in Room 303C DeVos on GVSU’s Pew Campus.
April 22, 2017 —> Baxter Fix-Up Day
Fix Up Day at Baxter is when all friends of Baxter come together to clean, repair, build, paint and “spruce
up” the building and surrounding areas. Watch for a permission slip with more details and information in
early April!
