VILLAGE CLUB NEWS

MARDEN WI At our December Extravaganza some of the members provided the entertainment in the form of readings, poems, monologues and

a hilarious pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. The performance ended with a singsong. The members then enjoyed a delicious

bring and share supper and Secret Santa presents were distributed.

The January meeting found us in the wilds of Northumbria when one of our members, Liz Roberts, gave us an illustrated talk

about her walk along Hadrian’s Wall. Last May Liz and her sister undertook a seventy mile long fundraising walk along Hadrian’s

Wall. They took a week walking from Carlisle to Newcastle upon Tyne staying at bed and breakfast establishments each night,

with their luggage being taken on ahead during the day. She also showed us what they had to carry every day in their rucksacks

such as waterproofs, coffee, snacks and a first aid kit. Her talk was both amusing and informative and members had lots of

questions at the end. She was thanked by Wendy Steadman.

Our speaker next month is David Vaughan who will be telling us about the history of Herefordshire.

If you have not been to a WI meeting before why not come along as a visitor. You will be made very welcome.

Guides News Ellie is a Guiding Star!

Ellie Hall was presented with her Guiding Star Award by Sandy Kinnersley, Deputy Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding

Midlands Region, at a Christmas party, attended by the Girlguiding Herefordshire County Commissioners, together with her

family and friends and past and present members of Marden Guides & Vennwood Senior Section and their families, who all came

to congratulate her. The Guiding Star Award is a Girlguiding award given to girls who have made a significant contribution to

guiding whilst showing courage and determination in challenging circumstances.

Ellie is a very inspiring young woman, always cheerful and helpful and has displayed courage and determination all her life,

especially in the past year. We are pleased that she has been recognised for her continuing achievements in Guiding and outside

and her courage at facing a very difficult time. She is a very valued member of our unit.

We have just welcomed some new members, who have joined us from Brownies. This term, we are looking at the problems of

plastic in the oceans. We will be setting plastic free challenges, making morsbags and newspaper carrier bags, crafts with recycled

bottles, and much more.

We are also planning our summer camp, and an outing to the Thinktank in Birmingham, accompanied by the Brownies.

New members are always welcome in Brownies, Guides and Senior Section. Why not come along to a meeting to find out

more about us?

For Brownies (Age 7-10 years) contact Trish on 01432 880859

For Guides (Age 10 – 14 years) and Senior Section (Rangers)(Age 14-18 years ) contact Alison on 01432 880094 or email

[email protected]

Guiding is fun for adults too! We would love to open a Rainbow unit for 5 -7 year olds in Marden or Sutton, but we need some

new volunteers to be able to do it. If you would be interested to help, please contact Alison. You would be given plenty of support

and training to become a leader, or helper and have a lot of fun!

If your daughter would be interested in joining the waiting list for Rainbows please contact Alison.

Alison Thomas, Guide Leader

MARDEN GARDENERS We started off the year in great style with a very informative and entertaining talk by Andy Offord from Living Landscapes. Andy

has a shop at Radway Bridge Garden Centre but travels over a wide area installing ponds and water features. He gave us lots of

good advice about choosing, constructing and maintaining a pond and answered several questions from members about their pond

problems.

At our February meeting (13th) we will welcome Julie Ritchie from Hoo House Nursery who will tell us all about the beautiful

Alpines that she grows and will also be bringing plants for sale.

Visitors are most welcome for just £3.00 each, which includes refreshments after the talk. Our full programme for 2018 can be

viewed on the Marden Parish Council website.

If you would like further information about the club or any of our events please contact Carol Rawlings (Chair) on 880056 or June

Poole (Secretary) on 880388.

MARDEN ARTS & CRAFTS At our February meeting we look forward to a demonstration of beaded jewellery by Sally Boehme. Sally makes beautiful and

unusual jewellery including earrings, pendants and bracelets. She uses a variety of beads from polymer clay to art glass and

sometimes includes semi-precious stones in her work. It promises to be an inspirational evening.

Join us in the Community Centre on Monday 26th February at 7.45pm. We look forward to seeing you and if you have not been to

a MACS meeting before, you are very welcome to come as a visitor and find out about us. SB

Marden News and Views – February 2018

MARDEN HISTORY SOCIETY We have this week completed our full programme for 2018 and are looking forward to sharing some interesting talks and events.

Starting us off on February 19th we are delighted that Colin Bates has agreed to share his memories of people and places during his

years working with Cadbury’s. The meeting starts at 7.45 p.m. and non-members are welcome to join us for a small fee of £3 each.

Members are reminded that annual subscriptions will be due and because of increasing costs will be £12 each for the year. There

are a couple of dates for your diaries. We are moving the date for our quiz this year and will be holding a Midsummer Quiz on 23rd

June.

Then in November the Parish Council have very kindly agreed to let us use the night that they usually meet so that we can reflect

on the local casualties of the First World War as near to the centenary of the Armistice as we can. This will be on Monday 12 th

November when our research will be shared so that we remember not just their names but more importantly the young men that

they were who gave their lives for our future. As we continue our research, it occurs to me that there may be descendants of these

young men still living in the Parish. If this is the case and you have any family stories that you can share please contact me (01432

880927) so we can include your knowledge into our presentation.

One final thing if you didn’t manage to buy your calendar for 2018 we still have a few left so if you contact me I will make sure

that we get one to you.

GN

CHAPEL CHAT Christmas came early to Marden Chapel Friendship Hour when we sang carols and listened to seasonal readings at our meeting on

30th November. Afterwards we enjoyed mince pies and a cake to celebrate the birthday of one of our members. Only the festive

decorations were missing but these were in place for our carol service on 17th December. Once again we are grateful to Peter

Mann for his glorious pedestal arrangement and this together with Advent candles, a Nativity set and winter foliage made the

chapel look special indeed. Jill Brooks put together a beautiful service of carols and passages from the Bible and, yes, we had

more mince pies!

By the time you read this a month of 2018 will already have gone but it's not too late for everyone from the chapel to wish you all

a Happy New Year. You would be made very welcome at any of our services and meetings.

SJA

MOTHERS’ UNION MU Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 6 February 2018 at 2.30 pm in St Ethelbert's Room, Marden Church, when we will be

discussing this year's programme.

Subscriptions for 2018 are £23 for membership plus £10.50 if you take Families First. Please let Cath Gunby have the money as

soon as possible.

The Bring & Share Lunch in December raised £55 with the Coffee Morning bringing in a further £32. This has all been forwarded

to Hereford Diocesan Mothers' Union to help families who have met with adversity. Thank you for your support.

Valued Memories Several notable and influential residents have contributed to Marden being the village that it is. May and Bryn Jones have made a

real contribution as well, a dedication of hard work and service to the community. May who died last December 2017 aged 102

years, grew up in Burmarsh with her mother who ran a small shop then selling amongst other things oil for the lamps (no electricity

then!). What changes she saw in her long life. Then families were self-supporting, the demise of the horse and cart, with church

going an important part of the week. In fact they actually walked to church sometimes across the Co-op plantation. As a farmers

wife, she and Bryn lived at Lakes Farm, Wyatt Road and had vivid memories of feathering, along with other wives, 200 head of

poultry, chicken, ducks, geese and turkeys, which were then taken by Bryn to Swansea market in a pony and trap.

Farming was the life blood of the village in those days. Always and everyday work to be done and especially tough with the

challenges of harsh winter weather. Such couples as Bryn and May, (Bryn served for six years as Parish Chairman and forty five

years as church warden (he died in 2007)) have left us a real legacy with values which living together in the countryside can give

us all.

May has had a wonderful life, blessed with good health until latterly. She was one of the earliest members of Marden Guide

Company which met at Vennwood and was formed in 1927 as well as a long serving and devoted member of the Mothers Union,

an example of a life well lived.

As new comers move into the village, with the anticipated new development, it is hoped that Marden will not lose its rural

traditions.

Marden News and Views – February 2018

Marden Village Trust

The Trustees thank all who returned a completed questionnaire. The information is invaluable in helping the Trustees

understand what you would like to see happening to your community centre in the future.

Sixty-six households returned the questionnaire giving a theoretical return rate of 11%. This is good for door to door

questionnaires. In addition, it is known that the questionnaire did not get to all houses in the parish. Six were returned

anonymously and so were not included in the above calculation. A further two were late and also not included in the

calculation, although their comments were taken into account. Probably the actual return rate was higher than the

calculated 11%.

As the full analysis of the questionnaire will be available on the Village Website, I have summarised below the

decisions reached by the Trustees when, during the January meeting, they discussed the first few questions. At the next

meeting of the Trustees in March, we will discuss the comments, suggests and ideas received about updating,

refurbishing and improving the facilities and how such initiatives can be best financed.

If the Preschool were not renting the Community lounge during the day, would it be used by other people and if

so for what?

There were many ideas put forward by those that suggested the Community Lounge could be used during the day if

the Preschool were not using it. However, the responses left the Village Trust Trustees unable to see who would

actually run the suggested activities and how many of them would generate income to replace the lost income if the

facility was no longer being rented by the Preschool. In order to move this forward, the Trustees agreed that they

would ask for potential volunteers to run activates from the suggestions list that will be on the Village Website as well

as in the February News and Views.

64% were concerned about the idea of giving the Preschool notice to leave.

Because a Preschool is an important asset for a sustainable and thriving community

Because, as above, there is no guarantee that the income the Village Trust would lose if the Preschool left could be

made good from other lettings. Without that income, the Village Trust / Community Centre would have to close, (or

hire charges would have to almost double). The Trustees discussed that the only way this could be avoided would be if

the Parish Council made up the short fall in income. The Trustees see no evidence that the Parish Council would be

willing to agree to this.

The Village Trust Trustees have therefore agreed:

To continue, on a rolling basis, to offer the Community Centre for rent to the Preschool.

The Village Trust Trustees noted that, notwithstanding some of the comments submitted, the Preschool is not a private

company. It is a registered charity and only the employees are paid. By September, when the current rental agreement

with the Preschool trustees ends, the Village Trust will have endeavoured to re-negotiate with the Preschool Trustees

the best possible rates for a new agreement.

A high quality Preschool which we are fortunate to have must have the children’s work displayed and a

comprehensive range of play equipment and learning aids available. It is unfortunate that when the facility was built,

insufficient storage space allowed for. It is not possible for the Preschool staff to clear the walls of the artwork and

posters and put all the necessary equipment away each night and get it out again each morning.

However, the Village Trust and the Preschool Trustees will continue to seek ways of minimising the impact of the

Preschool on other users of the facility.

The Village Trust believes that there should be a greater sharing and working together of all key players to resolve

quickly now the issues relating to ensuring Marden has community facilities to meet both existing and future needs.

The Village Trust therefore suggests that the Parish Council; (which should be taking the initiative on improving the

life and wellbeing of its parishioners) leads a time limited group consisting of all organisations and people, including

the Church, the Village Trust, the village pubs, the Chapel, the Preschool Trustees and the Academy and those with a

philanthropic intention, across the Parish that can contribute to such a solution,

The Village Trust understands that the decisions it has reached so far as a result of this consultation exercise will not

please some. However, the Trustees believe that the decisions they have reached have come about as a result of a

democratic process followed by careful consideration.

Marden Playing Fields There has been more interest than usual in the activities of the Playing Fields over the last 12 months amongst parishioners and I

am sure there will therefore be widespread welcome in the news that a General Meeting will be held in April 2018. I will

include on the Agenda my resignation as a Trustee.

Shortly before I left the Parish Council, the Parish Clerk said that she had been advised that each of the village organisations

named in Schedule 2 to the Constitution should appoint a Trustee to the Management Committee. This is, of course, a higher

requirement than we have previously placed on the village organisations named, who have just been asked to send a delegate to

our General Meetings. The 11 organisations named in the Second Schedule to the Conveyance of 1971, which established the

Playing Fields, are:

Marden Youth Club

Marden Boy Scouts

Marden Parish Council

Marden Children’s Playgroup

Marden Parochial Church Council

Marden County Primary School

Marden Football Club

Marden Chapel

Marden Gardeners Association

Marden Girl Guides and Brownies

Marden Women’s Institute

I will write to them individually when details of the meeting are fixed but I know that some of the organisations don’t meet

every month so it would be a good idea to get on with sorting out a representative now.

I know that in the past, we have given notice of a General Meeting and asked for the representatives from the village

organisations. Some have said, “We don’t want to be involved anymore.” or “Why us?” The answer appears to me to be

simple. Your organisation is named in the Conveyance and I think, therefore, you have a continuing obligation to appoint a

representative. It would be a good idea obviously to make sure they are willing to take on the obligation that would come with

being a Trustee of the Charity.

As well as representatives of the village organisations, the Constitution appears to allow for an unlimited number of elected

members who would also become Trustees. Therefore, if anybody wishes to put themselves forward (they have to be over 18

and presumably have to be a resident of Marden) perhaps they would like to let me have their details in writing by 31st March so

that they can be included on the Agenda for the meeting. (Email address: [email protected] or postal address, The

Wheatlands, Marden HR1 3ES).

Finally, people obviously need to start giving some thought to who might act as Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer

and so on, none of which, I can tell you, is a great deal of work but the job will need to be done by somebody else after the

meeting.”

Steve Miles has told me that he is happy to continue as a Trustee.

Marden News and Views – February 2018

The Wildside of Marden:

Winter has come with snow, rain and wind. The days are short but the gloom has been interspersed with some

glimpses of sun. We have a way to go before we can say spring is here although the snowdrops are appearing and the

bulbs are poking their noses through. Primrose related garden plants are also in flower and some of the plants have

continued to flower in spite of the frosts all the way through the winter season. The trees are in their dormant state and

the hibernating animals are hopefully still dozing. The field near the Vauld/Venns Green has still been full of around

20 buzzards but it was interesting to note that there were only 1 or 2 when it was cold, wet and windy. Very sensible

birds, they were probably tucked up in Venns Wood. It is strange how these reasonably solitary birds have gathered

together like the mute swans in the fields on the way to Moreton. In those fields of what looks like growing kale there

must be around a 100 of these large white birds. Someone gave me a collective noun calendar for Christmas so I think

we could make up our own as there are many nouns describing groups perhaps a buzz of buzzards or a centenary of

swans would suffice. Although I like the one that is a squabble of sea gulls that certainly describes them when they are

in a group or just flying over.

Many creatures adapt to the human house like the gulls, who think we are wonderful providing them with brick built

cliffs on which they can breed. One of our Marden residents has had this experience. Due to the age of some of the

houses in Marden they have large air vents and rodents in search of comfort and food find them an open door and feel

welcomed into these human abodes. The incomers made themselves known not just by their little deposits they leave

behind but by their resourcefulness in trying items as food. The climbing up onto the dining room table to test the table

cloth was not very satisfying but the corner of the box of chocolates was much more rewarding. Well I am afraid they

were evicted from their comfort by the changing of vents and something nasty from the pest control man. It is very

likely the species of mouse was a field mouse as our Tom & Jerry type mouse, the house mouse, is not so common. A

mouse caught in the trap in Marden church was a larger variety known as the yellow necked mouse and although not

common in the whole of Britain are found on the Welsh borders and it is not the first time I have seen this agile and

nimble mouse here in Marden.

My bird feeders are full of birds large and small and at the end of January we will be conducting our RSPB annual

garden bird watch. Next time spring should be making an appearance so keep letting me have your stories.

Planning applications

P172552/F, Ashgrove Croft, Marden – Proposed two additional mobile homes, two touring caravans and the construction

of a day room, associated hard standing drainage and re-aligned access track – Amended/new documents – Resolved to

continue objection and make following comments: no improvement or change in application resulting from latest

submissions; proposed units can be considered permanent dwellings, outside settlement boundary of The Vauld, does not

comply with the adopted Marden Neighbourhood Development Plan; not consider recent letter from applicant provides

sufficient evidence to support 'traveller' status; original application permitted on basis of applicants' child being of school

age, requiring permanent base, no longer true. P173996/F, The Firs, Marden, HR1 3EN – Proposed detached annexe with

detached carport/storage – Amended documents – Resolved to support – Noted planning permission granted. P174244/F,

Greenbank, Marden, HR1 3ES – Proposed change of use of adjacent dwelling into ancillary accommodation for

Greenbank. Proposed 2 storey extension to Greenbank – Resolved to support – Noted approved with conditions.

P174269/N - Waste, Brook Farm, Marden, HR1 3ET – Proposed modification to existing agricultural building to

accommodate a biomass boiler, including flue – Resolved to object on the following grounds: appropriateness of proposal

inconsistency/lack of basic data between documents. P174331/F, Greenbank, Marden, HR1 3ES – Demolish part section

of a dilapidated stable block and reinstate northern section of existing stables. Proposed American style detached stable

block – Resolved to support and make the following comments: there appear to be too many stables for solely private use;

if there is any intention to use it as a commercial livery stable, the application should have been for that; as the application

is for private use, the PC expects a condition that it is solely for non-commercial use, unless a further application is made.

LITTER Please take your litter home!

The rubbish from fast food outlets, drink cans etc, being

deposited on the roads and verges around these areas is

disgusting!

There are local residents who are regularly taking it upon

themselves to bag the litter up in an attempt to keep the areas

tidy. This in turn is filling up their recycling bins.

It has been brought to the Editors attention that there has been

an increase of rubbish not only in & around the village but

also in Litmarsh, The Vauld & Urdimarsh.

Herefordshire Councillor’s Report

Re: Accidents on C1125 I contacted the Safer Roads Partnership who have advised that they are concerned about the recent increase in the non-injury

collisions along this road. They have contacted Balfour Beatty and hope to have a meeting with them to discuss the whole

length of the Cll25 in order to see what can be done to address the concerns and make the road safer.

The speed of traffic along the length of the road continues to be a major concern and this has been brought to the attention of

the Safer Roads Partnership & our Local Policing Team.

Our Locality Steward has arranged for verge markers to be put in place on the bend near Holbatch Lane and has logged works

at Wergins bridge for the retracing of the yellow rumble strips. A Review of Franklands Corner has been carried out and

traffic engineering solutions, such as additional signage & road markings have been recommended.
