So we have arrived in the month of May and as is usually the case this month is dedicated to Mary the mother of our Redeemer. Just because we are in a lockdown situation doesnt mean that we cant celebrate this month and in a particular way look at Mary as a model for our response to what the world is asking of us, and what God is wanting of us. The world is asking us to prepare ourselves to go back to the good all days of pre Covid19. The world is saying that after a slight blip we should return to the normality we had for the whole of this century. However is that realistic and is it a good thing for us to go back there? Like you I have my own opinions as to where we should be going and how we should get there but. I suspect that if we asked a group of a dozen people we would likely get 12 different directions in which to go. So the question for us is simply this why dont we use Mary as our model.? We know very little of her life, but a few facts we do know are based on the writings in the New Testament. This gives us a picture of a woman whose life was sometimes straightforward, but for a lot of the time she stumbled along not really being in control, and not sure exactly where she was going. From the birth of her son Jesus to his death on the cross we see time and time again that life was extremely challenging for Mary. However what we see time and time again in this amazing woman is her ability to say Yesto God and then to work out the consequences of that. What we can often do is try and work out the consequences before we are prepared to give God an answer. Marys ability to say yes was built on a lifetime of prayer and reflection so that when things seem challenging or bleak she was able to trust that if thats what God wanted, she would do her best, and leave the outcome to the Almighty. Also time and again over the last 2000 years when Mary has appeared throughout the world she has always called people to listen to her Son and not to marvel at her. She is undoubtedly the hardest working saint in heaven. Not sitting back on her laurels but constantly repeating the words she said to the angel at the Annunciation I am the handmaid of the Lord”. So let us celebrate this May with Mary so that we may celebrate the joy of eternity with her as well.
