Analysis: It appears that the children were raking the leaves to makea pile of leaves to jump in.

Web: Common Experience

During carpet time the children and I sat down to talk about whatwas happening outside. I asked the children what they were doing

outdoor play. I mention to them about the tree and what they were doingwith the hockey sticks. I asked them It isn t summer anymore, so whatseason is it? Most of the children answered fall.

We talked as a group about what is going on during this season.The children started to say all these different ideas and I startedmaking the web with them writing down of what they said.

I told the children with so many of their bright and wonderfulideas, we can come up with so many types of activities that we can dotogether.

Kindergarten Group (10 children) Outside Playtime, 1ECE, 2 StudentsTime: 10:15 AMSpecific Setting Information:

The children were riding their tricycles, swinging on the swings andsliding down slides.The children were between the ages of 3.5 to 5. A group of childrenwere looking and walking of the surroundings of the tree. The tree isin the middle of the playground. The children were pointing to theleaves that are on the ground. One of them said the leaves are comingoff. , another child said what happen to the tree? . A child waszipping the zipper up and down walking on one side saying why do Ineed a jacket? The teacher walked up to them saying Please keep yourjacket on.

Activity: Making of the TreeMaterials:Poster Size Mural paperMarkersCollection of leaves and barkTissue paper (green)GlueTape

Using the mural paper, I drew an outline of the tree, without leaves onit. Took green tissue paper cut it out as the grass and taped on thebottom of the tree. Taped and glued on bark that s been collected onto the drawing of the tree. Tape on a variety of leaves that s beenalso collected on to the brown paper spread around the tree to make itseem like it s falling off the branches. The branches will remain baresomewhat until the end of the season. The children will paint on handprints onto the branches representing the leaves.

Group time: Story TimeTitle: The Busy Little SquirrelAuthor: Nancy TarufiThe story is about how the squirrel is preparing itself for the longwinter sleep. Talks about what the animal collects and the purpose ofit. During the reading of the story, I asked questions about the story,what they see on the pictures, and what they understand also if theyhave any questions at the end of the book.

Activity: Examining Leaves and BarkFrom the collection of leaves and bark for the previous activity, withthe extras, set them out on a tray with science equipment eg.Magnifying glass. Children will explore in depth of the leaves and

bark. From observation of the children picking on the dirt and fallingleaves on the ground.

Group Time: Story Time and ExamineTitle: LeavesAuthor: David Enza SteinThe story is about a baby bear learning it s first autumn. From why theleaves are falling, why is it getting so cold and how to preparehimself for the winter. During the reading of the story, the childrenare asked questions about the story, what they see on the pictures,what they understand and at the end of the story check if they have anyquestions about the book. Also I include a demonstration of varietiesof leaves, let the children pass them around within the group to getthem to feel, see, smell and hear texture of the leaves.

Group Time: Story TimeTitle: Beauty and the Beak: A Turkey Cautionary TaleThe story is about a group of hens owning a beauty parlour. They met aturkey who is about to get eaten for a Thanksgiving Feast. The henstook action to save the turkey. During the reading of the story, thechildren are asked questions about the story, what they see in thepictures, what they understand and at the end of the story check ifthey have any questions about the book.

Activity: Making Turkey OrnamentsMaterials:-fuzzy yarn -glue -pieces of triangles-stuffing -pipe cleaners -string-feathers -googly eyes -scissors-pompoms -pieces of materialI set the table with a container holding a ball of fuzzy yarn andstuffing {this is to make the body of the turkey). Another containerthat holds the pompoms and the googly eyes (the head and eyes). Acontainer that holds the feathers and material (wings, tail, andwaddle).And at container filled with pipe cleaners that are cut aboutan inch long and pieces of triangles (legs, neck and beck). The stringis to hang the turkeys when finish, glue will be provided and scissorsto cut the string. I took a group of five children to sit with me to dothe activity. I demonstrated to take the stuffing and make it into aball. The children were squeezing their stuffing into their fists, Ishowed them to rub the stuffing in circular motions with both palms ofthe hands, one of them said This is like rolling play dough! and

laughs. I took a piece of yarn and started to warp the stuffing into afuzzy ball. The children did the same. I helped the children to cutoff the excess yarn and tied a knot to prevent it from unravellingitself. When everybody has their fuzzy ball, I told them to take a pipecleaner and put it through the bottom of their ball, then they fold thepipe cleaner in half to have their turkey legs. Then I told them totake another piece of pipe cleaner and poke it on top of the ball, thisis the neck. Then take the pompom put it through the top of the pipecleaner, to keep it stiff on I helped the children to apply glue, thisis the head of the turkey. Then take the piece of material, apply glueon it and wrap it around the neck like a scarf. This is the waddle. Ihelped the children to glue on the googly eyes and beak (pieces oftriangles). Finally, I told the children to stick the feather as much

as they like. Later I helped the children to strung up their turkey andlet it set t dry to get ready to be hung.

Group Time: Questions about the topic and telling what they did forThanksgivingI taped a chart paper up on the wall with the title list ofQuestions . I reviewed with the children about the topic of the seasonfall. I asked them if they have any questions about the topic. I vegathered seven questions with the children and hopefully I can think ofactivities that can answer their questions.

Activity: Spider Pipe CleanersMaterials:-sequence or glitter or eyes -glue-regular size pipe cleaners

I set up a container holding a bunch of pipe cleaners (legs and body)and a container holding sequence or glitter or eyes. Glue will beprovided. A group of three children wanted to know how to make aspider. I showed the kids to take four pipe cleaners of their choice of

colours, and told them to twist them together right in the middle. Iasked the children how many legs do they see, lets count together. Wecounted together that their were eight legs. I showed them to takeanother pipe cleaner and wrap it around the middle of the legs to makethe body. Then I told them to put whatever they want for the eyes. Thechildren applied a lot of glue and stuck on the eyes.

Activity: Making Pumpkin FacesMaterials:Printouts of PumpkinsMarkers

I set the table with each printout for each chair and in the middle aset of variety of markers. I also used a chart paper that lists thedifferent face expressions with images that the children can use fortheir pumpkin drawing. Throughout the day every two children comes tothe table colouring their pumpkin and drawing in the face. One of thechildren got up and walked up to the chart paper and used her pointerfinger to sound out the words. When the children finished with theirwork, I made a doc panel to show their work of the pumpkins. Title OurJack-o-Lanterns . The older children made typical jack-o-lanturn facesand the younger ones drew on happy faces (J) in general.(picture under phase 2 doc panel)

Activity: Making PoppiesMaterials:-Red and Black Paper -Glue

-Scissors

On the creative table I set up sheets of red and black paper besideeach seat, set a rack of scissors for cutting. Three children came tothe table asking What do we do here? I told them We are going tomake poppies today The three children were very excited saying thatthey want one. I told them to cut up some red circles and a blackcircle. The children cut up variety sizes of red circles and glue thetogether in a flower form then they placed the black circle on thecentre. They held up their poppies up that they made and said look, Ihave my poppy now! I made a big one! I praised them for making suchbeautiful poppies. With their poppies I put it with my doc paneldiscussing about Remembrance Day showing the children s poppies to

parents.

Activity: Making of the treeTo end off the season, I lay the poster of the tree on the table flatand set up three different colour paint: green, orange and red; this is

for the children to paint on their hands and lay it on one of the trees branches, then they write their names beside their prints. Duringnaptime as the children start to wake up, one by one I called thechildren to do their hand print. Some were egger to write their names,even wanted to do more than one hand print.

Activity: Which season is Which?Materials:-Printout of activity sheet -Glue-Scissors

I printout a template of four boxes saying each the four seasons witharrows saying what comes next? . Also another printout of thecorresponding tree that macth into the apropriate season. The childrencut up the tree page and glue them where they belong.

Grouptime: Halloween Fashion Show

When the children are seated on to the carpet, I read them a littlehistory on Halloween and why we wear costumes. Then I made them standup in a line, one by one they will step up from the line do a pose anddescribe what is their costume.

After working for couple weeks in the kindergarten room with yourchildren I ve observed and have conversations with them about a veryinteresting topic, Autumn.

Your children asked a lot of questions and ideas for activitiesand storytelling during the next few weeks. This project is based onthe interest of the season Fall/Autumn. Exploring the different eventsthroughout the season, examine the nature and wildlife, and understandthe natural occurrences during this season. This will enrich your childs curiosity, grow on their development and enlighten them to newperspectives.
