Business Studies students donate to The Starship FoundationDuring 2015, a dedicated group of Year 12 Business Studies students were tasked with developing a project which would provide some benefit to the wider community.

Two teams separately developed products and decided that both teams would donate their profits to The Starship Foundation. One team sold organic body scrubs through a social media campaign and the other chose to sell homemade chocolate bars with reusable honey wrap packaging at the Mount Albert market. At the beginning of this year, representatives of each group travelled into the Foundation to donate $610 to Starship Hospital. Congratulations to both Teams on a fantastic effort!

World Prayer DayOn Friday 4th March, Sophie Barham, Daisy Pailate, Juavnka Rebello and I attended the World Prayer Day. It was an ecumenical event and it was amazing to see everyone come together in prayer, bound by faith. This year it was hosted by the Mt. Albert Presbyterian Church and the focus was on the issues faced by the women in Cuba. It was a very enjoyable experience, and the hosts were delighted to have the Marist girls attend, and be involved in the Liturgy. At the end of the service the candle was passed on to the Catholic community who will organise next year’s event.

Year 7 Zoo TripThe sizzling summer sun beat down us, watching from above. The boiling hot primates stared at us wearily through their beady black eyes. We were surrounded by the amazing sounds and sights of Auckland Zoo.

“7M!” The instructor called our class. “It’s time for your lesson!” Finally, a way to escape the sun. Inside the lesson room, the temperature was just right. The lesson was all about pests, vertebrates and invertebrates. The instructor had one of the 7M students pull out some stuffed animals that were once alive and asked us if they were pests or not. We learnt that any mammal that is not native to NZ are pests. This includes dogs, cats, rabbits, stoats, possums, hamsters and even us humans!

After the lesson we wandered around the zoo watching the cheeky primates, gigantic elephants, the sleeping lions and the skilful flamingos. We saw the orangutans and giraffes getting fed. We were also able to see a tuatara up close and learnt that they don’t feel guilty if they eat their own children by accident!

The sizzling summer sun beat down on us as we climbed onto the bus. The engine gave a cough as we abandoned the amazing sounds and sights of Auckland Zoo.We would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers and parents who came on this trip and to Mr Horne for making this trip possible.

Next week we will be saying farewell to the three students from Yokohama, Japan.Yuuki, Yoshino and Waka have spent the last 6 weeks at Marist College in Year 10.

Marist College would like to send a big thank you to the Kiwi homestays, who have welcomed them as part of their family, shown them around Auckland and introduced them to our culture. The girls have participated in the athletic sports, been to Yum Cha lunch with the International students and run a workshop on origami for Japanese Girls’ Day, as well as joining in the activities of their whanau group and class.

We hope that they have enjoyed their time with us and have managed to make new friends and learn lots of English and will take back good memories of their stay in New Zealand. Marist College would like to wish them all the best for their future studies and for their return home.

Visit from Japanese students

The 3rd Sunday of Lent: Luke 13: 1-9In the Gospel, the Galileans, ask Jesus whether those who suffered were greater sinners (because they saw suffering as a punishment by God for their wrong-doings). Jesus explains that God is not one who wills His people to suffer for the sake of their faults but God allows suffering because He is able to bring forward good as an outcome of it. This helps us to grow in maturity and in virtue, to trust in him and grow in grace. Evil is an absence of good. God is good and therefore only wills what is good and does not desire evil nor punishment upon His people. Having said this, disasters and suffering occur in our world like the disaster of the falling tower at Siloam in the Gospel. Suffering is a part of being human, without suffering we are unable to experience the whole of our humanity. Jesus explains through the parable of the fig tree that God granted us free will because He loves us and wants us to love Him freely. God doesn’t want us to be fearful of suffering in order to repent but He wants us to seek forgiveness out of our own free will. Like the owner of the vineyard, God also is merciful and although we might not always bear fruit as we should, He is forgiving and patient. At the same time, He does not want us to delay our seeking for His forgiveness and as children of God, He desires us to be fruitful. Therefore, God asks us to repent and begin anew, to bear fruit and to draw closer to Him.

The Fourth Sunday of Lent: Luke 15: 11-32 - The Prodigal Son The Prodigal Son helps us understand the gift of forgiveness and generosity. This is shown through the father. The father gave his son everything he had. When his son hit rock bottom, the father welcomed him home. Sometimes, we are the younger son - selfish and eager to live our own lives. We can sometimes turn away from God. We need to remember, then when we realize our mistake, just like a loving parent, our God will forgive us. There are many times in which we may have conflict between our siblings over things that may seem rather small. Like the older son, we tend to compare ourselves to one another and feel undervalued when we feel like our parents give our other siblings more attention. During our Lenten journey, we are called to genuinely appreciate those around us and understand that our family members are precious gifts. Like the father, our parents are generous and forgiving. Everything our parents work for is for us and it is something we need to remember when we feel like doing our own thing. During lent, we are asked to be like the father. To use the gifts of generosity and forgiveness and grow in familial love.

Kamar - Due to the implemention of the new Student Management System, processing invoices and payments will be delayed for at least 2 weeks. We are migrating data and setting up the system so this will be a busy time. Thank you for your patience with any unanticipated delays.
