The first month of the year is finally over - the dreaded January where most find t h e m s e l v e s a little broke with the added bonus of exc ruc ia t i ng heat - thank goodness!A new month

is almost like a new year. You make

resolutions to get into shape, make better financial decisions, remember birthdays. I coud go on forever.tame TIMES is here to help with at least one of those resolutions. It’s almost time for the tame TIMES 12-week Transformation Challenge to kick off, so remember to send in your entries! As for me, I will be practising love this month - towards family, friends and colleagues (new and old). I will practise kindness to strangers, after reading Paint with a Purpose on page 2. Bedford Centre was all over the headlines last week; now you can read more about it on page 3.Finally, thank you to the Brackendowns SAPS and all the security companies involved, who are doing what they can to keep our community safe. It is highly appreciated.

In die volksmond was Derde Straat bekend as Hoofstraat.

W h a t h a p p e n s when you take a nana who’s crazy about her grandchildren, mix in a little girl who loves shoes and cartoons, and then connect them with a bunch of caring people and a children’s home? Just a little bit of summer holiday magic, that’s what.Erica de Witt oozes with creativity and has channelled that into creating some fun gifts for her grandchildren by painting plain white Tomy Takkies with all kinds of fun designs: from Frozen, to Minions, Princesses and tons more. Naturally, everyone who saw the shoes wanted ones for themselves, and just like that, a little business was born, called The Painted Soul. This little business has a big heart, though. This was proved when Erica roped in family and friends to paint over 70 pairs of shoes during the December holidays. The idea sprang to life during a trip with Crossroads Church to Amazing Grace, a children’s home in the Eikenhof area. Erica was touched by the horrible state of the children’s shoes as they were lined up on the ground, while the children played on a jumping castle.Erica approached a family friend, Lee Johnson, who helped secure the R7 000 needed to acquire the shoes from Nedbank, and within a few weeks the painting started. Not one pair of shoes was the same as

another and it

took 11 people nearly

three weeks to paint them in the

evenings after work and over weekends. All the time

and hard work was instantly forgotten, though, when each

child at Amazing Grace received their new shoes. For some, it was the

very first pair of shoes they had ever worn. The Painted Soul continues to churn out shoes for kiddies and adults alike, but the shoes donated to Amazing Grace will always hold a special place in the warm heart of Erica, who hopes to have the opportunity to do similar projects again in the future. To order shoes, please visit The Painted Soul on Facebook, or contact Erica de Witt on 073 336 4409.

SPECIAL: The painted Tomy Takkies were donated to Amazing Grace Children’s Home.

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTYThursday morning last week (28 January) began as a day of celebration for Bedfordview police officials who had gathered at the Hellenic Cyprus Club in Bedfordview to celebrate the service of Lieutenant Colonel Johan Fourie, who has just retired from the police force after 42 years. The tame TIMES was present at the morning’s celebrations and the jovial mood of the police officials is captured in a series of photographs. Less than two hours later, the same police officers who had been relaxing and enjoying the farewell ceremony of their colleague, could be seen combing the centre to find evidence to bring suspects to book.According to Bedford Centre marketing manager Nikki Savides, SBV cash-in-transit guards were attacked by armed robbers at the centre around 11:15. During the attempted robbery, there was an exchange of fire, and two robbers, two SBV guards and two shoppers were injured.“Our Thursday celebrations were greatly disturbed,” said Sergeant Mduduza Nhlabathi, Bedfordview police spokesman, who said an announcement had interrupted the morning’s proceedings and police were despatched immediately to attend to the chaos. “We were informed that civilians and tenants were trapped in the centre, some hiding in fear, and suspects were running loose in the centre and shooting.”Police eventually arrested two of the suspects and the rest fled in a white Toyota vehicle,

according to authorities on the scene. In the aftermath of the shock of the traumatic incident, dazed shoppers gathered outside demarcated areas in the centre, talking among themselves about the appalling incident which had violated their sense of security.Savides said, following the incident, the process of cash-in-transit delivery at the centre would be urgently reviewed and assessed so that this function was moved away from the public spaces at the centre: “We can look forward to changes that will improve safety,” she said. “We need to keep a perspective,” said Ward 20 Councillor Jill Humphreys. “The fact that this ruthless attack took place where it did, is a reflection of what we live with in this country; rather than an indictment of the centre. The people who perpetrated the attack could be, and are, everywhere. They are around us, behind us in a queue, next to us in a coffee shop. Life goes on. Our prayers are with the injured and traumatized people who were affected.” “We wish to assure our customers and tenants that we constantly review our security infrastructure in order to ensure that the risk to all at the centre is substantially reduced,” said Savides. “Management is proud of Bedford’s security record and wishes to assure our customers and tenants that security has, and will always be, a priority.”The photographs taken at the Hellenic Cyprus Club capture a moment in time, but also serve as a reminder that a police officer

is always on duty. Lieutenant Colonel Johan Fourie might now be retired, but for the rest of the force, it is business as usual.

start up your enginesBy Martin DeweeI have experimented with various types of exercises over the years, but I discovered an exercise that increases strength and muscle mass, which in-turn will assist in fat burning. The majority of people training in gyms, run on treadmills, do spinning, or some form of high impact aerobics to try to lose weight. These exercises will help with fitness and some weight lost, but more muscle than fat is lost doing some of the above exercises.Muscle is the main component or engine in the body that is responsible for fat burning, and must be protected at all costs. Weight training is by far the best type of exercise with more benefits than most exercises put together. A combination of a large and smaller muscles, [eg: chest and biceps] can be worked together. Shoulders, trapezius and triceps on day 2, followed by calves and abdominals on day

3. Back will be on day 4, and legs on day 5. Workouts should not exceed 45 minutes in total, excluding warming up for 10 minutes on the bicycle. Calves and abdominals can be worked twice weekly. I am not saying you should not do cardio exercises, but 80 % of your exercise should come from weight training, and the rest from cardio. The Tame Times 12-week transformation challenge now kicks off on 2 March to accommodate many late entries, and would be the perfect platform to try a weight training program. This challenge is also open to all members of the public who do not want to enter officially.

For more details on the challenge, exercises, including where and when Martin Dewee will be giving free workshops on nutrition around the South, go to www.tametimes.co.za

Ekurhuleni upgrades online payment systemEkurhuleni’s e-siyakhokha online payment system is up and running with an additional hi-tech function set to address technical glitches experienced by users in December. The municipality said the e-siyakhokha system has been enhanced with the technology that can detect statement integration failure. The enhancement follows challenges experienced in December when some residents could not access their statements after the system failed to detect the statement integration failure.Residents can continue to enjoy the convenience of viewing, paying and downloading their monthly account statements online on https://www.e-siyakhokha.co.za anytime. The online system also enables residents

to predate payments (i.e. you can set the system to pay your account on a set date with a set amount if you are on leave or holiday). The system immediately gives you notification of payment, keeps records of your accounts and payments from the time you register to use this method and permits you to query your account online. The due date for payment is fixed and it does not change from month to month, which helps users not to miss payments. “The municipality sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused to customers who could not view their December statements.“Ratepayers are encouraged to continue utilising the online platform that has been introduced for their convenience,” said Ekurhuleni spokesman Themba Gadebe.

Once again, National Children’s Theatre (NCT) is presenting It’s Your Life: HIV/AIIDS Awareness Programme to school learners in Gauteng. As part of an awareness campaign, NCT will be visiting primary and high schools to present performances and open discussions with learners focussing on education and change in sexual behavior among our vulnerable young people. This programme will run from 2 February 2015 and will tour schools in Soweto, Alexandra, Diepsloot, Sebokeng and surrounding areas. The production has been made possible by a grant from the American Embassy. This HIV/AIDS programme offers an opportunity for Grade 7 to Grade 9 students to develop positive communication skills and to help avoiding potential tragic consequences. The main objective is to increase the level of knowledge and awareness among children and youth so that they can make informed choices about their own attitudes and behaviors. Most SA youth do not think they are personally at risk of catching the virus. In the fight against HIV/AIDS, children are being referred to as the “window of hope”, as their sexual patterns are not yet firmly established. This is the basis for NCT’s prevention education in primary and high schools. It’s Your Life is performed by a professional company trained to address HIV awareness in a dignified and professional manner. This production goes beyond being “just another

play.” While sensitive in its presentation, scenes are performed and learners are given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss relevant issues. The frightening phenomenon of “date rape drugs” is also discussed. It’s Your Life: HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme features professional actors, Julius van Zyl, Gamelihle Bovana, Shelly Simon, Tsholo Phiri and Zukiswa Angel Ndunge, who are all committed to establishing a platform for discussing what many adults think is a taboo subject. It’s Your Life teaches the life-skills necessary to face the challenges posed by modern living. It imparts necessary knowledge to empower young people regarding the often confusing messages they receive. The summation poses the question: “It is your life. It is your responsibility. You now have the knowledge. You now have the power. What are you going to do with it?”

I wish to thank the School Governing Body for their vote of confidence on my appointment as the new Principal of Alberton High School. The legacy left by Mr Minnie’s retirement will be a tough act to follow but I can assure you that it will continue with the support of our Governing Body, Educators, Parents and Learners.I was born and raised in the Vaal Triangle. My teaching profession started off at Vereeniging High School. I also taught at Handhawer Primary School. As Deputy Principal at both Vereeniging High School and Vereeniging Gymnasium during the last six years, I realized that with strong beliefs, values and discipline, one can accomplish anything.Although we run schools as a business nowadays, with sound financial planning and the continued dedication from our educators, we can send our “product” – your children – into the market place as well-balanced individuals. Therefore, I believe in an “open door policy”, where educators, learners and parents are able to see and speak to me no matter what. I was privileged to run my own Cricket Academy for both primary and high school learners and look forward to building up our academy at the school. It is an honour for me to be part of Alberton High School’s rich tradition and to continue achieving the academic accolades our learners bring to the school.I look forward to your continued support and together we can reach new heights.

A letter from Mr Olivier

Julian Cornofsky & Jarryd soma answer all your

property-related questions

niCole from alberton writes:I have recently gotten married and my hubby and I are looking at buying a home of our own, but we have no idea where to begin. This is very overwhelming for us and we need some direction. Please assist.

allegianCe properties responds:Thank you for your valid question. First and foremost, I would help you to establish a purchase price you are comfortable with, based on the banks’ criteria for affordability for the two of you. Once we have ticked all the financial boxes, we can narrow down your requirements for the specific type of home you would like to live in, such as location and your accommodation needs.I would then take you to your dream home. You and your hubby will imagine living in your new home and then we will get down to securing your new domicilium. Together we will sign an offer to purchase which is legal and binding, and fill in all suspensive conditions, making sure you are in the full loop of the whole process that will take place. Once the seller has accepted the contract, we will start to apply for finance and the transferring attorneys will get the transfer process rolling. After three months, the property transaction will be complete and your dream house will be registered in your name. Before you know it, you will be having your first glass of champagne in your new home.

If you have any questions you would like Allegiance Properties to answer

regarding buying, selling or even renting homes, please email [email protected]. Our team will

gladly respond.

was?

Ek het Spin as ‘n kortverhaal op my BlackBerry begin skryf toe ek veertien jaar oud was.

St Catherine’s High School held their Orientation Day for the new Grade 8s of 2015 on 16 January and an Induction on 27 January. They were welcomed by the Matrics of 2015 into high school, and made to feel part of the family.

The day had finally arrived. It was time to embark on a new mission…. High School. What better way to

begin than departing at 7am on 12

January to Maraneman on the Vaal. The

Grade 8s were divided into their form classes (with teachers who were just as eager) and from the start new friendships began to form. Upon arrival they did not hesitate to jump into

their first activities. The Grade 8s bonded in many ways over the four days, from having to “manage” finances, to helping each other conquer the dreaded and smelly “Otters-gat.” We were even able to see their sporty sides at the athletics try- outs and while playing “Nuckumball” (3-way volleyball). It was a good experience for everyone and one that will not be forgotten any time soon. The 2015 Grade 8s are really a super group.

Mountain bikingThis is fast becoming the preferred discipline for many cyclist due to the attitude of many motorists, but solo MTB

riders are seen as soft targets and once again highjacking has popped up its ugly head. The solution is to spend your time at the two MTB parks situated on your doorstep. Thaba Trails caters not only for advanced cyclists but also has newly built beginner’s trails that are great fun - while Rietvlei Cycle Park caters mainly for family rides but also has good challenging trails for the adventurous.Organized group rides are held at Thaba with a midweek Night Ride starting at 18:00 every Wednesday and a beginner’s ride at 07:00 every Saturday morning. These will be two-hour rides suitable for all ability levels. Weekly time trials are being planned for MTB and Trail athletes. There is a 5km track to challenge the speed of both disciplines on separate nights.

Track CyclingEvery Saturday afternoon from 14:00 you can see the top provincial and national track cyclists in action. Racing

is fierce as riders are preparing for the upcoming Provincial Championships in March and there is the bonus of the South African Track Championships being held at Hector Norris Park next to Wemmer Pan from 7 to 11 April. Action is guaranteed. There has been a resurgence of track cycling and racing is slowly regaining the grandeur of the past. Watch this space for

more information.

Peak cycling season startsFebruary and March are peak months of the year for cycling. Thousands of cyclists converge on the roads preparing themselves for events such as the Ride For Sight (15 Feb), Carnival City (22 Feb), Pick ‘n Pay Argus Tour (8 March), as well as the Iron Man Triathlon (end March). Our Southern roads are renowned for their popularity, especially on weekends and during early mornings. Many past and present champions have been born, bred and trained on these roads.Alan Van Heerden, Alan Dipple, Tony and Darryl Impey, the Beneke Family, Wendell Bole, Grenville Scullard are just some names that spring to mind.Swartkoppies Road that runs from East to West (i.e. from Alberton to Kibler Park), the Lido, the Nampak Papermills, Rand Water Board Road, Klipriver Road and Walkerville are the most popular roads in the area. The question of safety on our roads is, however, a major concern. Cyclists and motorists alike are continually getting knocked over, injured and killed; our congested roads in many ways can be seen as “Killing Fields .“ As a lifelong cyclist (and motorist) I can only plead with both parties that courtesy, understanding, patience and respect for each other are paramount to ensure that fewer deaths and accidents take place.

To improve safety and visibility, cyclists are requested to: • Wear bright, visible clothing and use a rear flashing light• Obey simple rules of the road, especially stopping at red robots

and Stop streets• Not to cycle more than two abreast• Follow a predictable line and pathway (especially novices) • Select quiet roads to train on

Understand that cyclists are vulnerable/unprotected as opposed to cars. Allow at least 1, 5 metres space when passing cyclists. Cyclists are road users, so treat them as such. Be patient with them and do not ignore them or regard them as easy targets. For example, a cyclist who is riding in single file can easily be ignored and squeezed off the road by a car (and oncoming cars) without even a glance or reduction in speed.

Motorists on the other hand are requested to:
