Market dynamics – European market, week 26

The demand is concentrated on red fruits and stone fruits; prices are low for all products, with the exception of mangoes and limes whose markets are undersupplied. Sales are focused on the European season products and the market has shown better activity for some items (e.g. limes) in correspondence of the beginning of the World Cup. Avocado – The market is oversupplied because the supply from Peru reached an historical level; volumes from South Africa are also increasing and above the average. Prices are decreasing and under pressure particularly for small and big sizes while stocks are expected to increase further, especially for big grades (small sizes are more requested for Ramadam and in Northern Europe). In the green market, volumes are decreasing and prices are high; arrivals should decrease further keeping prices stable. Dates – Large supply and high prices in correspondence with the beginning of Ramadam.

Kiwi – New Zealand’s kiwifruits arrived with good quality and achieved prices similar to those reached in last year; Chilean kiwifruit prices registered some negative adjustments in recent weeks, however they are still higher than during the 2013 campaign. The price gap between Chilean and New Zealand kiwifruit is narrower than ever.

Limes – Prices are decreasing but are still strongly above the average (9.00-11.00

Euro/ctn); volumes are augmenting but the demand is keeping a good level so that, even with a possible increase of arrivals in the next weeks, prices should keep a satisfactory level.

Mango – The market is scarce and prices are above the average since a couple of weeks. Volumes from Ivory Coast are practically over and volumes from Mali are smaller than expected (last year were sufficient); the first arrivals from Senegal are on the market. Fruits from Puerto Rico and Mexico (mostly by air-freighted) complete the supply. Some importers complained that the deliveries from some origins are unsuitable for ripening, which frequently means huge losses. Beans – The local season products took the stage; beginning of season also for mange tout from Peru.

Pineapple – Difficult market, with big volumes and a steady demand. Prices remained low in the last few weeks, below the average or just on average depending on the country/market considered, with practically no price difference depending on sizes, a part from counts 10-12’ which are observing very small quotations.

The sales of local season products is registering low prices particularly for peaches and nectarines but it is hoped that the low start could mean a good second part of the season in August.
