PRODUCTION PIECES2014-2014 Potter Center Season Announcement (Direct Mail) - Annually the marketing department creates a direct mail piece to announce the upcoming season of professional shows at the Potter Center. This year we are taking a different approach by using a post card that was e-mailed to just over 16,000 previous ticket buyers. Postcards were mailed just prior to individual tickets going on sale and a revised postcard will be mailed in early September just prior to the first performance. Ticket buyers will receive something in the mail boxes twice prior to the season kick off. As the season progresses we will develop postcards for individual shows and sort and mail to tickets buyers who have purchased like tickets in the past.

Corrections Officers guard inmates in prisons according to established rules, policies and procedures to prevent disturbances and escapes. Officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a jail, reformatory or penitentiary. They periodically inspect the facilities, checking cells and other areas of the institution for unsanitary conditions, contraband, fire hazards, and any evidence of infractions of rules. In addition, they routinely inspect locks, window bars, grilles, doors, and gates for signs of tampering. Probation and parole officers fall under the title of corrections. They maintain contact with convicted offenders and act as rules enforcers as well as guidance counselors. Parole officers may be assigned within a prison facility to assist inmates before their release from prison.

Police Officers and Detectives are government employees whose functions are protecting life and property, preserving the peace, detecting and preventing crime, and maintaining public order through the application of the law. Police and detectives pursue and apprehend individuals who break the law, respond to medical emergencies and public disorder situations. Officers must possess good interpersonal communication skills to handle encounters with citizens who are angry, injured or filled with despair. A large proportion of their time is spent in the outdoors, patrolling assigned areas, writing reports and maintaining records of incidents they encounter. Detectives, who are often called agents or special agents, perform investigative duties such as gathering facts and collecting evidence after an initial investigation has been completed. Assignment as a detective is sometimes a special appointment or promotion.

NEWS RELEASESMay 29, 2014Juneteenth Community Celebration to welcome Motown sounds of Serieux Jackson College will host a Juneteenth Community Celebration with a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at Jackson’s Downtown Riverwalk Amphitheatre.

Enjoy the sounds of the Serieux Motown Review (pronounced “Serious”) at this Juneteenth event. Serieux is a Motown tribute band that pours on the energy during their shows! The front line consists of five talented vocalists who emulate the great Motown legends like the Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Contours and more! Backed by a five-piece band, Serieux combines strong vocal harmonies with the famous Motown dance choreography for a truly authentic show!

Serieux is a Detroit-based, traditional soul vocal group that was founded in 1998 by Larry Griffin, Valenica Taylor, Donovan Johnson (musical director) and Robert Grande (road manager) to recreate the style of classic soul groups like the Temptations, the Four Tops and the Manhattans. Splitting their time principally between Detroit and Las Vegas, Serieux has opened for the likes of Earth, Wind and Fire, The Whispers and other major acts. They’ve also performed in a Motown Musical, “Come and Get These Memories” with Martha Reeves, and played the Temptations in the play “Marvin, My Brother - The Marvin Gaye Story.”

Serieux issued their first disc, “I Can Give You Love,” in 2007, featuring former Spinners and Temptations lead singer GC Cameron. The group currently includes Eddie Watkins, Quinton Troutman, Leon Franklin, Dennis Ewell and Griffin. Opening act will be the band Cold Blu Steel.

The Juneteenth Celebration is a free community event hosted by the Jackson College Office of Multicultural Affairs. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of freedom for African-Americans. Originally celebrated on June 19, it commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas and originated in Galveston in 1865. The observance of Juneteenth as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African-American freedom and emphasizes achievement.

May 20, 2014Stanton Foundation establishes scholarship to help young adults from foster care system Growing up in the foster care system may not be easy, but Jackson’s Stanton Foundation wants to help young adults get a great start in higher education by creating the Stanton Foundation Educational Scholarship at Jackson College.

The $20,000 scholarship is designed to cover all expenses for the student. Funds will be available for up to a total of 30 credit hours, student fees, books, and on-campus housing with meal plan for one year.

I believe there is no better way to do this than to stimulate young minds,” said David Stanton of Stanton & Associates Inc., president of the Stanton Foundation. Stanton & Associates, Inc. is a franchisee of Wendy’s and Biggby Coffee restaurants. Companywide, Wendy’s community

Students may apply by completing the Jackson College Foundation Scholarship Application. Student must attend full-time and maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA). For more information, call the Foundation office at 517.787.0800.

This scholarship takes access and affordability to the next level, and I am very proud that the Stanton Foundation is piloting this with us.”

The Jackson College Foundation was established to support the mission of the College by providing the additional resources necessary to ensure success. The Foundation’s endowment earnings and donor contributions are used to award nearly 200 scholarships a year to JC students, totaling nearly $200,000 to help students make their educational goals a reality.

May 15, 2014Nursing student receives George Potter Outstanding Student Award Jackson College student Joy Gebhardt has dreamed about becoming a nurse her whole life. She’s now pursuing her dream, and had to overcome significant personal challenges to stay the course.

For her academic excellence and service to others, Gebhardt is the 2014 George E. Potter Outstanding Student Award winner. Gebhardt is in the second year of the registered nursing program, with one semester to go.

“It is very humbling to be honored. I was very surprised and excited to learn about the award,” Gebhardt said. “I take great pride in the quality of education I have received here at Jackson College, and I feel I am exceptionally

well prepared for my field and profession of nursing. The professors make an investment into each student and strive to help us achieve our goal of becoming successful, competent RNs. With outstanding faculty and caring administrators, the ADN program is one of the best in the state.”

As a single mother returning to college, she chose Jackson College because she thought it would be the most affordable and convenient. She’d also heard positive remarks about the College’s nursing program and that it prepares nurses for the “real world” or nursing, and she wanted to be challenged. Scholarships have helped with the cost of her education, for which she is very grateful.

While she was going to college, her son was diagnosed with brain cancer and battled the disease for a year before passing away in 2013. Her son was an inspiration to her, as his goal was to be the first to graduate college and earn his bachelor’s degree. When he became ill, Gebhardt volunteered to drop out of college to care for him, but he said absolutely not because he wanted her to continue toward her dream. She recalls bringing her textbooks to his hospital room and studying by his bedside. Her son did persist through radiation treatment and chemotherapy to complete his bachelor’s degree in December 2012, before passing away three months later, in March 2013. She said through her son’s inspiration and her faith in God, she was able to continue.

Gebhardt is an excellent student academically, and has also given back to her community through service. She was the opening speaker for the Grass Lake Relay for Life following her son’s passing, and participated on a team to help raise money for cancer research. She is active with the Aware, Inc. Shelter, where she is a volunteer on-call advocate for victims of sexual assault. She has volunteered to go out to speak to schools about domestic violence and dating violence awareness, and also volunteers for the program Girls on the Run, geared to help build confidence and self-esteem in young girls. In the past, she traveled to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina as part of a relief effort, where she helped cooked meals for hundreds who were displaced by the storm. She and her husband belong to the Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir and serves on the hospitality committee.

“Those are the things that make me feel the most blessed, not just working to get grades but being other-oriented, thinking what can I do to help this person? That’s something I feel good about. Now, I am looking forward to the journey that lies ahead and the opportunities to serve and care for others.”

May 12, 2014Jets baseball clinches spot in NJCAA tourney

Congratulations to the Jackson College men’s baseball team, who clinched a spot in the NJCAA Region XII Tournament with two wins last Thursday.

The Jets faced Macomb Community College in a double header, taking the first game 13-3 and the second 7-6, to wrap up the season. The Jets end the season with a 16-10 record in Michigan Community College Athletic Association conference play, and a 27-19 record overall.

This makes the eighth consecutive year the Jets baseball team has made it to the regionals, said Rick Smith, head coach. While the team faced a couple key injuries with some position players during the season, they were able to come together and keep themselves in the running for a berth in the regional tournament. “It’s a very well-balanced conference, any team can beat you at any time,” Smith said. “As a team, we pulled together throughout the season and were able to get into the regional again.”

The National Junior College Athletics Association Region XII Division II Tournament will be held May 14-17 at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. The Jets will play Wednesday, May 14, at 11:30 a.m. against Delta College. Smith is optimistic about the tournament, especially with a pitching staff that has more than 320 strikeouts throughout the season. “That makes you very optimistic. I feel we have four quality starters for the tournament; if our hitters swing the bat like they are capable of, we should have a good opportunity in the regional. We’re optimistic, but we’ll take it one game at a time.”

Winner of the regional tournament will quality for the national championships, the NJCAA DII Baseball World Series, to be held in Enid, Oklahoma from May 24-31.

** Update: Jets victorious in first round of regional Wednesday, May 14: Jackson College (28-19) 6, Delta College (33-12) 5

May 6, 2014Basketball teams sign 3 players for next season Jackson College Jets men’s and women’s basketball teams have signed their first players to the 2014-15 teams. Men’s coach Carl Thomas signed Gary Junior Cooper last week, a 6-foot 9-inch power forward who is a 2011 graduate of Monroe High School. Cooper is a big-bodied post player and a good finisher around the basket, Thomas said, who can also knock down shots from the perimeter.

Tre’vion Crews, a 6-foot point guard, also signed to play for the Jets. Crews is a 2014 graduate of Northside High School in Fort Wayne and is coming off a great senior year campaign that saw him receive numerous post-season accolades, including being one of the top guards in Indiana. He was named All-City Player of the Year as well as Northeast Indiana’s Player of the Year. Thomas said Crews is quick and speedy, a point guard that has a great mid-range jump shot and the ability to shoot three-pointers also. Women’s coach Courtney Ivan signed Vandercook Lake High School 2014 graduate Kennedi Showerman to the 2014-15 team. Showerman, a 6-foot center and former Jayhawk, was an All-Conference, Academic All-State, and Second Team All-State honoree. “Kennedi will bring a toughness and grit to the court,” Ivan said. “I’m very excited to have such a decorated athlete in my program. “Having our team participate in community service projects helps with team bonding and gives us as a group the opportunity to give back to the community,” Smith said. “It also gives us as a team a good feeling that we were able to help accomplish a goal for the group that we worked together to complete. The DNR was able to take advantage of a strong group to achieve such a job. All in all it was a good project and we are looking forward again, in the fall months, to do another project with the Michigan DNR.”

A representative from the National Resources Commission of the Michigan DNR thanked the team for their efforts, and said it was the most work any volunteer group had ever done in one day at the campground!

Gordon Awards of Distinction at NerdNation, Phi Theta Kappa’s 96th Annual Convention in Orlando, April 24-26.

College presidents and campus CEOs are selected for this award on the basis of outstanding efforts given toward promoting the goals of Phi Theta Kappa. The award is named for the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, Phi Theta Kappa’s longest serving Board of Directors Chair and President Emeritus of Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington. Dr. Gordon was named Phi Theta Kappa’s Most Distinguished College President in 1984. Nominees should have served as president at least five years at the current institution, and must attend the Phi Theta Kappa Annual Convention to receive the award. The 2014 recipients have served an average of eight years at their colleges.

“I am honored by Phi Theta Kappa and grateful to Professor Martha Petry for her nomination for this award. I receive it not for myself, but as a tribute to Martha’s commitment to this program, her advancement of our chapter, and for the many students who participate in this organization,” Phelan said. “I am likewise gratified by the many faculty members who support this program and the academic advancement of our students. PTK provides a solid pathway for students who are committed to academic excellence at Jackson College, and a rich opportunity to collaborate with other students and encourage each other.”

Jackson College’s Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Rho Lambda chapter, with Petry as advisor, has been busy increasing participation and involvement. For the past two years, the chapter has achieved Five-Star level status, the highest honor possible for chapter development. Members must complete specific goals relating to promoting membership, interacting with college administration, and improving student engagement.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States and around the world. Nearly 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 131,000 students inducted annually.
