Vocalist Sandi Patty will bring her farewell tour to Jackson with Christmas Blessings at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9 at the Potter Center.

As one of the most highly acclaimed performers of our time with five Grammy awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three platinum records, five gold records, and 11 million units sold, Sandi Patty is simply known as The Voice. Patty is the most awarded female vocalist in contemporary Christian music history, with 40 Dove Awards and more than 30 albums. “Christmas Blessings” is her latest holiday album, with a host of Christmas and holiday favorites and an original, “The Little Things.”

Sandy Patty was introduced to the world with her rendition of The Star Spangled Banner during the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. While her 30-year career is heavily rooted in the gospel music industry, she has had the opportunity in more recent years to extend her career outside the genre. Patty has performed with symphonies across the country, including the New York Pops, Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Dallas Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Houston Symphony, and Oklahoma City Philharmonic. She also headlined the title role in sold-out performances of the musical “Hello, Dolly!” with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. She was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and as an Indiana Living Legend in 2007. In addition to her prolific musical career, Sandi is also an accomplished author of seven books. She and her husband, Don, have eight children. They currently reside in Oklahoma City, Okla.

November 18, 2016 Jackson College’s medical assistant program recognized

Jackson College is pleased to announce that its medical assistant program has been recognized as one of the best in the nation by The Community for Accredited Online Schools (AccreditedSchoolsOnline.org). As a leading resource for higher education and college accreditation information, the site released its annual ranking for the 2016-2017 school year, honoring Jackson College as the #11 Best Medical Assistant Program in the nation.

“We wanted to highlight schools like Jackson College, who are striving for excellence in education,” said Doug Jones, CEO and Founder of the Community for Accredited Online Schools. “These colleges offer an exceptional educational experience, upholding rigorous accreditation standards and showing an overall commitment to maximizing student success.”

Jackson College offers both certificate and associate degree programs in medical assistant. Medical assistants are multi-skilled health practitioners trained to work in the business and clinical parts of a medical office. They assist physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists in helping their offices run smoothly.


In order for universities to qualify for this ranking, they must hold public or private not-for-profit status and carry institutional accreditation. November 21, 2016Jets baseball players sign with four-year schools

Congratulations to two Jackson College Jets baseball players who signed with four-year colleges this week, during the early signing period.

•Jake Gleason, sophomore from Goodrich High School, outfielder, signed with Grand Valley State University, where he will finish his two years after this season with Jackson College. Gleason is a business major at Jackson with a 3.946 grade point average. Gleason started as a freshman and was a big part of the success of being MCCAA 2016 champions. Coach Rick Smith said, “We expect Jake to lead us in the outfield and be one of the team’s captains while pursuing another championship in 2017. The Jackson College baseball team is proud of Jake’s decision with Grand Valley State University and will do well in the GLIAC conference.”

•James Rogers, sophomore from Oxford High School, left-hand pitcher, signed with Davenport University to pursue his degree in sports management. Rogers was also a big part of the success last year with a record of 9-0 on the mound. “We see James doing the same thing in 2017 for the Jets while pursuing back to back championships in the MCCAA,” Smith said. “James currently has a 3.16 G.P.A. at Jackson College. The Jackson College baseball team is proud of James’s decision with Davenport University where he will get to pitch against Jake in the GLIAC conference.”

November 11, 2016‘Fame – the Musical’ coming to Potter Center

The Jackson Community Concert Band will present its fall concert, International Flare, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 in Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center. Concert is free.

Band members will perform a variety of pieces from around the globe, thus the “International Flare” theme. Program includes: • “Concert Prelude” by Ralph Hultgren • “October” by Eric Whitacre • “The Wind in the Willows” by Johann De Meij • “Slava” by Leonard Bernstein • “Valdres” by Johannes Hanssen • “Ammerland” by Jacob de Haan • “Jack Tar March” by John Philip Sousa, edited by Donald Hunsberger • “El Camino Real” by Alfred Reed


The Jackson Community Concert Band is comprised of both college students and community members. The band is under the direction of Dan Bickel, conductor and instructor of music at Jackson College. Bickel has previously taught at local public school districts, including Western, Michigan Center, Trinity Lutheran and Grass Lake. He performed as a bass player and singer at Cedar Point and on Princess Cruises. He also performed with the Jackson Community Concert Band under the previous conductor, Ron Douglass. Douglass retired earlier this year after more than 25 years with the band.

November 4, 2016African American Male Summit to focus on education

Jackson College invites the community to come together for the third annual African American Male Summit, Nov. 17-18 at the Potter Center.

This year’s event will continue gathering input on ways to help more African American males succeed. This summit will focus exclusively on education, from kindergarten through college, K-16. Previous summits have also examined the penal system and family structure. African-American males have struggled to find success in education, with significant achievement gaps when compared to whites. This summit will explore how to close those achievement gaps, increase preparedness for college and improve retention and graduation rates. Participants will also explore partnerships between K-12 and colleges in areas such as mentoring and tutoring males of color.

“These are complex challenges that African American males face, and they require collaborative solutions,” said Lee Hampton, director of multicultural affairs at Jackson College. “We strongly encourage educators and parents, and community leaders to attend.”

On Thursday night, the evening will begin with a keynote at 6 p.m. by noted author and speaker Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu. He has written 33 books, including: “Black Students: Middle Class Teachers,” “Keeping Black Boys out of Special Education,” and “Understanding Black Male Learning Styles.” He has been a guest speaker at many universities throughout the U.S. and acted as a consultant at many urban school districts.

College President Dr. Daniel J. Phelan and Jackson Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Beal will present Thursday night. On Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Kunjufu will again speak. Participants will work in guided dialogues to seek solutions to the challenges African American males face, such as lack of parental support, truancy, financial hardship and so on.

The College will create an executive report of finding after the event, which will be available to schools, colleges and community.

Blessed with what the New York Times described as a “beautiful countertenor,” Art Garfunkel has made an indelible mark on the music world as both a solo artist and half of the unrivaled Simon & Garfunkel. Born in Forest Hills in Queens, New York, his passion for singing was born at the early age of 4 when his father bought him a wire recorder. Being able to record into it got him singing more than anything else, he said. He went on to sing in school talent shows with a partner, Paul Simon, also from his Forest Hills neighborhood. In high school, they formed a band, Tom and Jerry. Though they didn’t gain a following as Tom and Jerry, they did begin to gain a following after changing their name to Simon & Garfunkel in late 1963. Within a year they were signed to Columbia Records, who paired them with producer/engineer Roy Halee. From 1964 to 1970 they recorded a groundbreaking string of classic albums (“Wednesday Morning 3 A.M.,” “Sounds Of Silence,” “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme,” “The Graduate,” “Bookends,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”) and an equally impressive body of songs, many of which became pop standards, among them; “The Sound Of Silence,” “Homeward Bound,” “I Am a Rock,” “Kathy’s Song,” “April Come She Will,” “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,” “At the Zoo,” “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” “America,” “Scarborough Fair/Canticle,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “The Boxer,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Cecilia,” “El Condor Pasa,” and “My Little Town.”)

Simon & Garfunkel won five Grammy awards together, two in 1968 (Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Pop Performance/ Duo or Group for “Mrs. Robinson”); and three in 1970 (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists for “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” which also won Song of the Year and Best Engineered Recording). In 1977, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” received the prestigious Britannia Award for “Best International Pop LP and Single, 1952-77,” as voted by the music industry of Great Britain. In 1972, Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits was released, remaining on the charts for 131 weeks in the U.S. and a staggering 179 weeks in the UK. In 1990, Paul and Art were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
