Postpress operations in JDF

• Introduction

•Postpress processes in an overview

•Building a postpress JDF job ticket

• ICS in conventional postpress

Introduction

•The role of postpress is– to finish “loose sheets” into a final product

e.g books, magazines, newspapers...

•Postpress consumes output resources– conventional printing or digital printing

e.g. printed sheets, printed web, ... etc.

•To describe this operations there are– more than 40 postpress processes in JDF 1.2

Process Categories

•Packing processes

•Enhancement processes Final product

•Block joining processes (Binding)

•Sheet / web finishing process

•Block compiling processes

Sheet/Web Processes

• Sheet processes:– Cutting– Folding

• Web finishing processes– Creasing, Perforating, Gluing, …– Cutting, Folding– Stacking-Bundling-Palletizing– or PrintRolling

• Partial product enhancement : HoleMaking, Laminating, ShapeCutting, ...

Block Compiling Processes

• Feeding / PrintRolling

• Inserting, …

• Gathering/ Collecting

ICS for Postpress

• ICS stands for “Interface Conformance Specification”

• Defines the use of certain JDF elements or attributes for specific domain applications.

• Published ICS Documents for JDF 1.2:

– ICS Sheet Finishing• Signature manufacturing

e.g. cutting, folding, …

– ICS Binding• Saddle stitching

• Softcover binding

• Hardcover binding

ICS Documents for JDF 1.3

• ICS MIS - Finishing Common document with „Gray Boxes“ describing incomplete production orders for – Signature mfg.– Saddle stitching– Softcover binding– Hardcover binding– Packaging production
