A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL And particularly to the officials, players and supporters of Chalfont St. Peter who are here this afternoon for this BetVictor Isthmian League fixture. Unlike us Chalfont managed a victory in The Emirates FA Cup last Saturday beating Shrivenham 2-0 with this following league victories over Ashford Town (Mx) 4-0 and Bedfont Sports 2-1.

Our 4-2 loss here against a good looking Cinderford Town outfit saw a very disappointing display from the lads and Barts expressed this after the game citing defensive frailties as the reason that he is now looking to fix. We meet again towards the end of September in the revamped Velocity Trophy – again back here, so we will get to know each other very well over the coming months!

The defeat to Cinderford was particularly disappointing given our earlier performances against Barking and Staines Town in which we did well considering the absence of players like Chris Ovenden, Isaac Osei-Tutu, Jordan Brown and Charlie Samuel at times, and I am sure that Barts will be reminding one and all what is expected of them – starting this afternoon!

Many thanks for coming this afternoon, and hopefully throughout the season ahead, which we now look forward to. We are back in league action on Saturday against FC Romania who groundshare at Cheshunt FC so please try to get along if you can to give your support. This is followed on Tuesday 2nd September by another trip- this time to Bracknell Town in the Velocity Trophy.

Now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do particularly over the coming months.

Terry Staines, Chairman

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN

Happy Birthday to the National League! The NLP office was in absolute overdrive last week as we celebrated 40 years of the National League.

It was while producing our special eight-page pull-out that it truly dawned upon us just how many extraordinary tales and history this division has created; so much so that we ended up writing far too much and spent most of Friday evening frantically trying to cut down word counts and squeeze in as many stories as we possible could!

There were interviews with the likes of Martin O’Neil and Neil Warnock, who both learned their trade in Non-League’s highest tier, however for me, I particularly enjoyed speaking to Peter Hunter, who was secretary of the division when the one up, one down agreement was made with the Football League.

It was during this conversation that I realised just how important the agreement made in 1987 was for both advancing the quality of the division and streamlining the entire Non-League pyramid.

Before then clubs had to apply for a place in the Football League, with just one position up for grabs.

At the time it seems as though this application process was a largely futile event for Non-League clubs to be a part of, with the bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery.

In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League and Non-League – with the fairy tale dream of a team rising through from obscurity to break into the upper echelons of the English system seeming virtually impossible.

Page 5: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN It is amazing to see just what an impact the promotion and relegation agreement has had on Non-League football.

Teams can now dare to dream of making a run through the divisions, while the guarantee of Football League clubs making the plunge into Non-League each year has increased both the quality and the fan base within the National League.

Nowadays, especially with the introduction of two up, two down, the division is in extraordinary health and with attendance records being broken and the likes of Tranmere Rovers using promotion from the National League as a springboard for further success, the future of the league is looking bright!

New documentary proves fascinating watching I would recommend all Non-League fans watch “The Gaffer” on BT Sport this Saturday (24th August) evening.

The documentary follows coaches such as Harrogate’s Simon Weaver, Bromley boss Neil Smith, lower league legend John Still and his protégé Hakan Hayrettin at Maidstone, as well as Ben Strevens and Hartlepool boss Craig Hignett. It contains some really fascinating moments that demonstrate just what an important role these clubs play within their local community and how the work for a manager most certainly never, ever stops!

THE BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NEWS THE EMIRATES FA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND

By Ian Townsend

A Most of our clubs were in FA Cup Preliminary Round action yesterday, but the action actually began on Friday evening. Barking hosted Aveley, although Aveley actually did the hosting as Barking’s pitch isn’t quite ready yet- and Justin Gardner’s side seemed to like their new surroundings, winning the match with goals from Johnny Ashman and Nana Boakye-Yiadom to go into Tuesday’s draw. Wyan Reid got one back for the Millers, who yesterday signed a new striker- you’ll read about that later.

On the Sussex coast we had a derby, as Whitehawk entertained Saltdean United and came out on top, David Martin and Lucas Rodrigues scoring in a two-nil victory.

Moving on to yesterday, we had lots and lots of goals- and newcomers Chichester City top scored, as they got seven of them! They travelled to Bridon Ropes of Southern Counties East Division One, and Scott Jones (2), Gicu Iordache (2), Kaleem Haitham (2) and Callum Overton found the net in a seven-two victory.

Basildon United joined City at the top of the honours board, as they also got seven- and they had seven different goalscorers. Framlington Town visited the Bees and must have wished they’d stayed away, as Thomas Anderson, Ayo Odukoya, Gabby Adelowo, Harry Doyle, Kurt Smith, Ross Elsom and Danny Norton found the back of their net. Town did get one back just before the end.

Staines Town and Horsham had six appeal, and we’ll start with Anthony Gale’s men, who had what looked to be a difficult tie as they travelled to Phoenix Sports but made it look anything but. They were helped by a second half dismissal for the home side, substitute Mahmoud Juma seeing red, but take nothing away from the visitors,

Page 21: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

THE BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NEWS for whom Che Krabbendam got a hat trick. Jamie Philpot got two, and the other goal went to Mahrez Bettache.

Horsham travelled to East London, where they took on Tower Hamlets- and where a number of their fans took on the long jump (with, if the video is to be believed, rather unsuccessful results). Their team was rather more athletic, with Will Miles, Chris Smith (2), Zack Newton and Jared Rance giving them an emphatic victory- although Hamlets did net a consolation, meaning that the final score was 1-6.

Moving on to five, and that was a score shared by Chertsey Town, Grays Athletic and Bracknell Town. The Curfews entertained Erith and Belvedere, fell behind, but then came back in style, Andrew Crossley getting two, Quincy Rowe, Scott Day and Jonathan Hippolyte scoring the others. The Robins travelled to Bournemouth FC (no, not that one), and a Joe Gater double, Caden Genovesi, Justin Clayton and Dan Carr saw the Poppies trampled into the dust.

Parkside saw something of a surprise. A match between two highly fancied North Division opponents ending in victory for the home side isn’t in itself surprising, but the manner of that victory certainly was, Grays Athletic defeating Heybridge Swifts by five goals to two. Tony Stokes got to take home the match ball for the home side, Joao Carlos and Manny Ogunrinde getting the others, whilst Harrison Chatting and Dan Walker got what proved to be consolations for Swifts.

Bowers and Pitsea entertained Barkingside, and goals from Lewis Manor (2), David Knight and Quentin Monville put gloss on the scoreline after Barkingside had hit back to level at 2-2 with twelve minutes remaining. Coggeshall Town also got four, their quartet coming at Cockfosters, who didn’t find the net. Nnamdi Nwachuku got the first two (we didn’t type that, it came up as predictive text as it happens most weekends), Connor Hubble and Michael Gyasi the others.

Page 22: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

THE BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NEWS Another side scoring four away goals were Dereham Town, who fell behind at Spalding United of the BetVictor Northern Premier South East Division but rallied in some style, Shaun Wones, Ryan Crisp (2) and Adam Hipperson putting them through as they went from two-two with seven minutes remaining to four-two victors. Waltham Abbey put four past Woodbridge Town, Billy Holland, Junior Appiah, Nathan Korenteng and Aron Gordon with the goals, whilst Ramsgate travelled to SCFL Steyning Town and also got four, Stephen Smith with two, George Monger and Kane Rowland with the others. The home side got one back shortly before the end, but the Rams march on.

Bedfont Sports won a five-goal thriller at home to Hanworth Villa despite falling two goals behind before the break. A Keanu Williams double sandwiched a goal by Didi Ndombe to give victory to the hosts.

We had a South East derby at the Green Elephants Stadium, as Sevenoaks Town travelled to Burgess Hill Town, and Oaks had a happy trip home again as they left with a three-nil win, all of the goals arriving in the last twenty minutes through Tommy Whitnell, Frankie Sawyer and an own goal.

Hanwell Town travelled to Fairford Town and left with a three-two win, Harry Rush, Harvey Killeen and Rob Laney scoring for the Geordies, whilst Whitstable Town also got three in victory over Newhaven, Aaron Millbank, Alex Anderson and an own goal doing the damage- although Newhaven did get one back before the end. Tilbury were also three-one winners, a double from Ola Ogunwamide and a George Sykes goal enough to see them beat Stanway Rovers.

We had another all North clash as AFC Sudbury entertained Felixstowe and Walton United. Last weekend the Seasiders took victory in Sudbury in the league, but the Yellows hit back yesterday, Sean Marks and Liam Bennett quickly firing them into a two-goal lead, and they held on for victory despite a Tom Debenham penalty for United.

Page 23: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

THE BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NEWS Westfield travelled to Basingstoke Town and won two-nil, Aaron Watson and an own goal doing the damage after the break, whilst Ashford United also recorded an away victory, a solitary Mohammed Kamara goal enough to send the Nuts and Bolts to the next round.

Another all-North Division clash saw Histon earn a hard-fought victory at Bury Town. Evan Key gave the visitors the lead only for Ryan Stafford to quickly equalise, but Ed Rolph struck to win the match for Histon two minutes after the break.

A Tom Hitchcock penalty was enough to see Cheshunt defeat Stowmarket Town, whilst in an all-South East clash Whyteleafe took the spoils at Cray Valley PM, Corie Andrews in the first half and Antonio Walker Bath in the second easing them to victory. Romford travelled to Harwich & Parkeston, and two first half goals- one from Rashaad Ogun and an own goal- were enough for victory, whilst Hastings United won a Sussex derby with Broadbridge Heath 2-1 at Pilot Field, a Ben Pope double, the second two minutes from time, seeing them through.

Another Sussex side, Haywards Heath Town, also recorded a 2-1 home victory, but they had to come from behind to do so against Tunbridge Wells. Connor Saunders and Nico Cotton got the goals.

A Charlee Hughes double gave Maldon & Tiptree a 2-1 win at Saffron Walden Town, whilst Chalfont St Peter managed a two-nil win at Shrivenham of the Hellenic Premier despite playing eighty-two minutes with ten men. Sodike Thompson and Sean Giordmaina got the goals, both coming after the break.

Sittingbourne won the South East v South Central battle against Uxbridge, Shaun Brown and Johan Caney-Bryan scoring after the break in a two-nil victory, whilst Toby Andrews and Jake Andrews gave Soham Town Rangers the same result as they hosted Biggleswade United.

Page 24: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

THE BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NEWS South Park came from behind to defeat Canterbury City 2-1, Andrew Herring and Hayden Skerry with the goals, whilst Canvey Island were two-nil winners at Stotfold, George Purcell and Tobi Joseph scoring in the second half.

Tooting & Mitcham United defeated Faversham Town with the only goal of the game, Danny Bassett with it early on, whilst Wingate and Finchley defeated Welwyn Garden City two-nil, second half goals from Alphanso Kennedy and Olu Oluwatimilehin enough to see them through.

Onto the drawn matches now, and Chipstead will face a trip to the Beacon Ground after being held to a goalless draw by Hassocks, whilst Witham Town will host FC Clacton after Oliver Bell got the equaliser in a one-one draw. Harlow Town and Brentwood Town also ended level, Jason Williams giving the blues the lead only for Ozzy Adeniji to equalise late on for the home side.

Herne Bay face a trip to AFC Croydon Athletic, and they had to come from two goals down to earn it, Zak Ansah getting them both- including the equaliser right at the end; whilst VCD Athletic found that even scoring three goals at home to AFC Uckfield wasn’t enough to get them through, as the visitors got three of their own. Kelvin Ogboe scored twice from the spot, whilst Timi Tolowanile got the other.

And now the not-so-good news. Cambridge City fell 2-0 at home to Barton Rovers, whilst East Grinstead Town lost by the only goal of the game as they entertained Abbey Rangers. Three Bridges travelled to Little Common and lost 2-1, their goal coming from Tom Tolfrey.

Northwood fell 1-0 at Longlevens, whilst Marlow surprisingly were beaten four-two at home by Cinderford Town, falling four goals behind after little more than half an hour. Kelvin Bossman got the hosts second; we don’t yet know who got their opener. Ashford Town went down six-nil at Sutton Athletic, whilst Great Wakering Rovers bowed out two-nil at Walthamstow.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHALFONT ST PETER AFC

The club was formed in 1926 and played local junior football from its ground on Gold Hill Common.

1948 saw a move to the Great Western Combination and a year later the club moved to its present location, although the picturesque name of Mill Meadow belies its origins as a refuse tip. As the club developed off the field thanks to the support of many volunteers so success began to arrive on the field and in 1952 the first silverware was won, the Berks & Bucks FA Intermediate Cup. Senior status followed and progress through the Parthenon League, London League and Spartan League followed.

The early 1970’s were difficult for the club but a move into the Athenian league saw a change in fortunes.

The 1980’s, now in the Isthmian League, brought some consistency in league performances and some successful campaigns in the FA Cup and FA Vase.

The 1990’s was another difficult decade, culminating in a low point of two successive bottom places.

2001/02 saw a rebuild under Martin Dean with a good start to the season but a subsequent falling away saw them finish 14th. The lower echelons became the accustomed territory for Saints for several seasons until Dean’s departure at the end of the 2003/04 season.

Managing Chalfont to victory in the Berks & Bucks Under-18 Challenge Cup was a young Danny Edwards. His reward was to be handed the reins of the First Team for the new season. And

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHALFONT ST PETER AFC

so began a rollercoaster ride of success and near misses that continued until just recently.

A restructuring within the Isthmian league at the end of the 2005/06 season saw Saints moving to the Spartan South Midlands Premier League.

2006/07 saw a top half finish in their first season in the Spartan and a trophy for the cabinet, the Wycombe Senior Cup, secured with a 7-0 win over Downley Albion at the Wycombe Wanderers ground.

2007/08 was a hugely successful season. Danny Edwards was developing an exciting squad and the style of play was both entertaining and successful. Good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase came together with a Final appearance in the Premier Division Cup. Topping them all was winning the Challenge Trophy with a 2-0 win over Brimsdown Rovers. A close three-horse race in the league saw Saints pipped at the post into runners-up spot.

2008/09 was about building on the standards set in the previous season. And it didn’t disappoint. Some top scalps in the FA Cup heralded a season of cup runs. The FA Vase was the crowning glory, with the Saints making it all the way to the semi-final and being heart breaking seconds away from winning the right to play at Wembley. Saints were in the hunt for the league title all the way to the last week of the season but the fixture congestion caused by the cup successes began to tell and they couldn’t quite make it across the line, eventually finishing a brave third. Losses in the finals of the Challenge Trophy and the Wycombe Senior Cup took a little bit of the shine off what was a brilliant season for the club.

Expectations were high going into season 2009/10 after going close to promotion in the two previous seasons. A slow start and a nightmare run of losses in October saw the title chase wobble and rapid exits from all cup competitions. But an incredible run of form with just one defeat in 23 took Saints to the top to the pile where they became the target for other teams’ top performances and it wasn’t until they were overtaken by Aylesbury in the last two games that they had to settle for the runners-up spot again.

At the start of 2010/11, the aim was clear: promotion was the number one target. Getting off to an incredible start in notching up seventeen straight wins, Saints grabbed top spot and refused to relinquish it for the entire season, never being less than four points clear at any stage. The focus was clear and any progress in the cups was quickly curtailed. Such was the dominance in the league, the champagne corks popped with five games to spare as the title was secured. The curtain was brought down on the record-breaking season and their five year stay in the Spartan League by winning the Challenge Trophy for an unprecedented league and cup double.

For the 2011/12 season, life was expected to be a trial for Saints yet they made a bright start in their new environs and quickly acclimatised. For long periods they were genuine contenders but a poor end to the season, combined with the loss of totemic striker Charlie Strutton to the professional ranks, saw them fall away into the mid table.

A strong run in the FA Cup illuminated the 2012/13 season. An impressive win at Carshalton Athletic earned a tie against

Page 34: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHALFONT ST PETER AFC

Conference side Bishop’s Stortford. A draw at Mill Meadow set up a replay that ultimately proved a step too far. Playing with style, Saints were to earn the Division’s Fair Play title but couldn’t reach the play-off positions.

With a lack of firepower, the 2013/14 was a disappointing way to mark Danny Edwards’ tenth season in charge. The lack of goals consigned the side to a mid-table finish despite boasting one of the meanest defences.

2014/15 saw the goals begin to return. A promising start saw the side hard to beat but too many draws held them back. A run in the FA Cup, highlighted by a deserved win in front of a baying Kettering crowd was coupled with a strong run in November that saw the club in a playoff position but from such heights, a miserable New Year run saw them tumble down into relegation territory. It took a stubborn recovery in April to ensure eventual safety.

2015/16 was a highwater mark for Saints in their current run in the Southern League. Putting aside an early exit in the FA Cup Saints went on to head the table at New Year and looked set for their first tilt at the play offs, if not more. Sadly they repeated the poor run of results thereafter and fell away to finish sixth. Still an excellent all-round season as Tony Mendy secured top scorer honours in the division with 30 goals.

In contrast, season 2016/17 was possibly the poorest in over a decade. A storming start to the season saw Saints in top spot throughout August but the hole left by the departed Mendy was never filled and as the goals dried up so the tumble down the table gathered pace. Some poor signings added to the problems

Page 35: MARLOW · bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery. In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHALFONT ST PETER AFC

and the second half of the season delivered just four wins and for a while relegation was a real possibility before safety was finally achieved.

2017/18 was one of our most exciting seasons in the Southern League, our seventh, with the side in playoff contention right up until the final few games. Our peerless record against those sides who ultimately claimed the top places, with just the single defeat in 12 games, including a notable double against champions Beaconsfield Town, underlined how competitive a side we were. Still struggling for goals, it was our defence that led the way with 16 clean sheets. It was a season that saw evergreen skipper Alan Hedley pass the 500 games mark and manager Danny Edwards reach 700 games in charge. Saints embrace change but enjoy stability at the same time.

2018/19 saw Saints return to the Isthmian League after 12 seasons as football was restructured. An inconsistent defence and a shortage of goals ensured Saints were unable to escape the mid-table places. Towards the end of the season, Danny Edwards signaled his wish to step down from the role he had held with such distinction and Saints had to begin the process of finding a new manager.

The dawn of the 2019/20 season sees Saints, not only with a new management team, led by Finlay Johnson, another young manager being given the opportunity to prove himself at the higher level, but also a wholly new squad as players followed Edwards to new pastures. The opportunity to build something new from the ground up promises to be an exciting one.
