BRIDGING THE EPHESIANS 5 DIVIDE

A fresh look at this controversial marriage

passage.

15 Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise— 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18

And don’t get drunk with wine, which [leads to] reckless actions, but be filled with the

Spirit: 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music to the Lord in your heart,

20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord

Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord, 23 for the husband is head of the wife as also Christ is head of the church. He is the

Savior of the body. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so wives should

[submit] to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as also Christ loved the church and gave Himself

for her, 26 to make her holy, cleansing her in the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to Himself in

splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and blameless. 28 In the same way, husbands should love their

wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

29 For no one ever hates his own flesh, but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for

the church, 30 since we are members of His body. 31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. 32 This mystery is profound, but I am talking about

Christ and the church. 33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the

wife is to respect her husband. Eph 5:15-33 (HCSB)

Three couplets are presented in the passage: verses 22-33

1. SUBMISSION/SACRIFICE:

The wife is to be subject to her husband in everything, and he is to sacrifice himself for her. The dynamic is for her to submit and him

to sacrifice (vv. 22, 24, and 25).

Page 12: Marriage and the Family Study Life University Pastor Groover July 15, 2007

2. BODY/HEAD:

The wife is the body, and the husband is the head. Together they form one flesh (vv. 23, 28, and 31).

Page 13: Marriage and the Family Study Life University Pastor Groover July 15, 2007

3. RESPECT/LOVE:

The wife is commanded to respect her husband, while the husband is commanded to love his wife (vv. 28 and 33).

13 And this second thing you do. You cover the Lord's altar with tears, with weeping

and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14 But you say, "Why does he not?" Because the Lord

was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been

faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.

15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 "For

the man who hates and divorces, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garment

with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be

faithless." Mal 2:13-16 (ESV)
