Welcometo the Spring Martlets Mail, packed with good news, volunteer and family stories as well as lots of ways you can get involved and support your Hospice. This edition we’re focusing on how we care for our community with features on Day Services, the Home Visiting Service and Bereavement Support - plus a look back over the year at how your support has helped us care for our patients and their families.
As ever our Diary of Events is bursting at the seams, and I’m very excited to tell you that we’re opening a new shop in central Brighton this spring. We’re on the lookout for volunteers, turn to page 10 for all the details.
On behalf of our patients, staff and volunteers at the Martlets I’d like to thank you for your support over the last year – we couldn’t do this without you.
Very best wishes

Green shoots are popping up in our gardens at the Hospice and it’s clear that spring is here! We’ll be opening the gardens this year for visitors and we’re on the lookout for local gardeners to do the same. Size really doesn’t matter, whether you’ve got a small and perfectly formed city ‘yarden’ or are lucky enough to have a rambling, green oasis of your own, we’d like you to open it for the Martlets this summer.
Every year our Open Garden scheme raises thousands for patient care at the Hospice. It’s a
wonderful opportunity for garden lovers to look around gardens that are normally hidden away from public view.
You choose the date you want to open and we’ll help you organise it. We look after the publicity and will supply you with posters, collecting boxes and anything else you need.
If you’d like to get involved this year contact Antonia our Events Manager on 01273 718782 or email [email protected]

Happy Birthday This year we’re celebrating; we’ve been providing excellent care for our patients and their families since 1997. That’s eighteen years, something to celebrate we think. Over the year look out for our community roadshows, join our special 18th birthday celebrations and keep an eye on our shops. We couldn’t celebrate without involving them! All the information will be up on our website www.themartlets.org.uk from this Spring.

Milestone for Martlets LotteryLast autumn we hit a milestone of 12,000 weekly players in our Lottery. It is hardly surprising the numbers have gone up, as whilst the odds in the national lottery are around 1 in 14 million, the Martlets Hospice Lottery odds are more like 1 in 300. Every week one lucky player wins £1,000.
Our Lottery started in the year 2000 and still has 277 of the original players. Beryl Biggs is one of them. She explained why she continues to support the Hospice: “It is such a worthwhile charity as it is the only place like it in the local area. It’s not just an In-patient unit, they offer respite care to give carers a break too. I’ve had friends who have been looked after by them and I just don’t
know how Brighton & Hove would manage without the services they provide.”
Since its beginning, our Lottery has raised over £2 million for patient care. Speaking about reaching this milestone, Sheila Green, Lottery Manager said: “We would like to thank all past and current players for their fantastic support since the Lottery began.”
Martlets Lottery prizes range from £5 to £1000 every week – to be in with a chance to win join today!

Artistic supporters needed Here’s an exciting, unique and quirky way that you can support us. Join celebrities and professional artists participating in our Top Secret Art Project by producing a drawing or painting that will be auctioned on-line later this year.
We are asking well known TV personalities, professional and amateur artists and hospice supporters to produce a piece of A5 size art. However, all the artists responsible will remain anonymous until the end of the
auction so winning bidders won’t know who has produced the art they have bought until they receive it.
We aim to have 500 pieces of art. To join in and show us your artistic flair please contact Elizabeth in our Fundraising Department on 01273 718785 or email [email protected] to sign up and receive your A5 size card. We hope to raise over £20,000 from this initiative which will go to fund our vital hospice at home respite service.

Peacehaven Cliffs Abseil
Last year, Tracey Colwell, her sister Claire Docteur and Claire’s husband Kenny, raised £310 for the Martlets through their sponsored abseil. It’s one of our most popular events and Tracey had a very personal reason for signing up.
Tracey was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April 2013. After her operation and treatment Tracey felt an overwhelming desire to do something to support a local charity. Her sister Claire works in our Fundraising department, so when she mentioned abseiling 115ft off Peacehaven Cliffs, they signed up – and even roped in Claire’s husband Kenny.
Claire said: “When I first mentioned it to Kenny, he laughed and then agreed - why not! It’s an amazing achievement and an incredible experience.
“Working for the Martlets, I see first-hand the compassion, dedication and support given to patients and their families. Standing on the cliff top with my sister will be one of my proudest moments in life.”
Tracey continued: “Being diagnosed with bowel cancer was my biggest nightmare, but also my biggest lesson in life. It taught me how short life can be.
“I was 33 years old with a young daughter, and if things had been different I would quite possibly have needed the services and support of the Martlets myself. When Claire told me about the abseil, I didn’t hesitate. I was there, wearing my ileostomy bag abseiling 115ft and living. I knew I was raising money for those who need it most.”
Join the Peacehaven Cliffs Abseil
Sunday 26th July & Sunday 23rd August
Get a birds eye view from the top of the cliff face before you abseil 115ft down to the seafront below.
All the money raised will go to patient care at the Hospice. Everyone’s welcome, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult and the minimum age is 8 yrs old.

At 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and in places one mile deep, the Grand Canyon is a breath-taking sight – and provides some unforgettable trekking. Basecamp is on the Havasupai Indian Reservation west of the Grand Canyon’s main tourist focus.
The trekking is challenging and the heat can be exhausting, but you will walk through incredible landscapes with striking colours and rock formations, and beautiful blue-green creeks and waterfalls which are great for a dip! This is an outstanding way to experience one of the Natural Wonders of the World. You’ll finish with a celebration in Las Vegas, an energetic city in stark contrast with the natural beauty you’ve been immersed in!

Running for the MartletsLindsey Wright signed up to run for us at this year’s Brighton half-marathon, and this is what she had to say before the event: “I’m really looking forward to it, although terrified at the same time! I’m running with my friend Karen Topham and we have been training together – as much as we can – but probably not enough...
“I’m taking part for several reasons. Firstly, because I’m privileged enough to volunteer and see first-hand the wonderful care, compassion and support ALL the staff give to patients, family and friends, and the difference it makes, I am in awe of them all!
“Secondly, for looking after my beautiful friend Ghita Schuy, the Martlets helped her so much. Ghita was supported and welcomed back
after discharging herself too soon. It could have been so difficult to go back in after leaving, but the Martlets team were amazing and made it much easier for her.
“Thirdly, I’m running with Karen, whose partner John was cared for by the Martlets. Without the support of the Martlets team, Karen wouldn’t have been able to care for John at home, which is where they both wanted to be. The half-marathon is our way of saying thank you.”
“Basically, I’m running for you because the Martlets is amazing!”
Thanks Lindsey, we think you’re amazing too!
If you think we’re amazing and you’d like to run for us, contact Clem on 01273 747455 or email [email protected]

Martlets Home Visitors ServiceSocial and practical support for isolated patients at home“When I first visited Doris she’d really lost her confidence and wasn’t able to go out at all. By my second visit she was able to walk, with me as support, to the end of the road. I honestly think that all she needed was someone to take her mind off it all so she could start walking again.”
Ann first started visiting Doris, a 91 year old pensioner who was living alone, after she’d fallen and been diagnosed with cancer. With Ann’s support Doris was soon back on her feet again.
“I just gave her the arm to lean on and we chatted along the way. Very gradually, after four or five weeks, she was able to go to the shops on her own. It was a joy to see the change in her.”
Ann’s been a volunteer for the project since 2011 when it started and it’s clear she finds it immensely rewarding.
“It’s lovely to see the anticipation on patients faces as you arrive, for two hours they can forget about their illness. That’s the important thing – the visit is all about them,
We were able to support Graham after his cousin and close friend Micheal passed away. “I received a letter from the Martlets informing me of their bereavement service. Part of me said I don’t need bereavement counselling, that’s for people who really can’t cope. And deep down I knew I wasn’t coping. I admit that in agreeing to have bereavement counselling I had the passing thought of having failed in handling my life. And yet with that came a huge relief - that someone cared enough for me in the way I had cared for Michael.
The greatest gift for me was having the opportunity to explore my feelings, my love, my anger, my frustrations and my tears. It was surprising how much was in there! I got to see and understand our relationship in a whole new light and that helped me make sense of my loss and my emotions. From then on grieving felt normal and healing happened. It has made me stronger.”
