THE ROCK Peter was Jesus’ choice to lead the fragile band of apostles. In today’s Gospel, Simon is given a new name—Peter, the “rock.” In John’s Gospel, Peter is called to be a shepherd. He is expected to lay down his life for his sheep. And tradition tells us that he did just that. But today we think about the durable rocklike quality that Jesus needed in a leader. Peter was appointed to his leadership position for reasons we are not able to fathom. God knows, and Jesus knew well, that Peter was flawed. We cannot mistake his enthusiasms, though, his manifest love, and his great, exuberant faith. Those virtues saw him through. They are durable, tough, beautiful virtues. They make Peter a sympathetic and lovable person. They provide us with the balance and humor that we need as we consider our own roles in the universal church.

LA ROCA Jesús escogió a Pedro para ser el jefe del inseguro grupo de Apóstoles. En el Evangelio de hoy, el que una vez se llama-ba Simón es ahora Pedro –la roca. En el Evangelio de Juan, Pedro es llamado a ser pastor. Eso requiere que esté dis-puesto a dar su vida por sus ovejas. Y la tradición nos dice que él hizo eso exactamente. Pero hoy, pensamos en las cualidades inmovibles de las rocas que Jesús necesitaba en un jefe. Pedro se ganó su posición de liderazgo por razones que no nos podemos imaginar. Dios sabe, y Jesús también, que Pedro tenía sus fallas. No podemos dejar de ver su en-tusiasmo, ni su gran amor y fe espontánea. Esas virtudes le sirvieron bien. Son virtudes admirables, duraderas y fuer-tes. Hacen que Pedro sea simpático y fácil de querer. Nos proporcionan el balance y el buen humor necesarios al con-siderar nuestros papeles y miembros de la Iglesia universal de nuestro tiempo.

Tras haber visto el mes pasado lo que la Iglesia enseña de la Virgen de modo indiscutible –no lo único que enseña-, es decir los dogmas maria-nos, me gustaría adentrarme en este y en los próximos meses en ese otro tipo de revelación que es la que el Espíritu Santo ha ido depositando en el sentir del pueblo de Dios. No son dogmas, pero sí son expresiones que han ido formándose a lo largo de los siglos y que reflejan muy bien lo que la gente sencilla siente y cree sobre su Madre, la siempre Virgen María. Me refiero a las letanías. Son de las oraciones más hermosas que conozco y de las que rezo con más deleite. Se puede decir que en ellas se expresa la tradición viva de la Iglesia en lo que respecta a Nuestra Señora. No todo está ahí, por supuesto, pero está lo principal, incluidos los dogmas antes señalados. Bastará con fijarnos en algunas de las oraciones que contiene para saber por qué, además de lo ya dicho, debemos dar gracias a Dios por María. Veamos algunas de ellas.

Madre Amable

El concepto “amable” significa, etimológicamente, “digno o mere-cedor de ser amado”. No cabe duda de que María lo es. Y lo es, entre otras cosas, porque también se le puede aplicar la otra acep-ción de ese concepto: “persona simpática, afable, acogedora, edu-cada, de buenas maneras y fácil trato”. María es amable porque en su relación con nosotros nos ofrece siempre un rostro acogedor, lleno de ternura. No tenemos la impresión, cuando acudimos a ella, de encontrarnos con una mirada llena de ira, por más que con frecuencia sea eso lo que merecemos. Ella es la amabilidad, la mano extendida que se acerca a nosotros cuando aún estamos derribados por el peso de nuestros pecados para levantarnos ha-cia la gracia. María es, sin duda, “la sonrisa de Dios”, “la caricia de Dios”, no en el sentido ontológico, pues ella no es Dios, sino en el sentido de representación, de enviada por Dios para, siendo nuestra madre como lo es suya, hacernos presente la ternura divi-na, la dimensión maternal de Dios. Démosle gracias al Señor por eso y démosle gracias también porque, al rezar esta letanía, nos hacemos conscientes –o deberíamos hacerlo así- de que también nosotros, como María, como Dios, tenemos que ser amables: dig-nos de ser amados y portadores ante los demás de la sonrisa y la ternura divina.

Propósito: Agradecer a Dios porque en María Él nos ha mostrado su “rostro materno”, su amabilidad, su ternura, al habérnosla dejado como Madre nuestra e intentar imitar a la Virgen.

After last week’s discussion regarding what the Church teaches us about the Virgin, beyond contention –though not all that it teaches--, in other words, regarding the Marian dogmas, during this and the following months I wish to focus on another type of revelation, which the Holy Spirit has been depositing in that felt by the people of God. They are not dogmas, but are expressions that have been building throughout the cen-turies and that reflect quite well what the simple person feels and believes regarding his/her Mother, the perpetually virgin Mary. I am referring to the litanies, which are the most beautiful prayers that I know of and which I delight in praying. The living tradition of the Church with regard to Our Lady can be said to be expressed in such prayers. Though certainly not all is contained in such litanies, the greater part, including the before mentioned dogmas, is. We need but to focus on some of the prayers it contains in order to know why, in addition to all that already stated, we must thank God for Mary. Let us take a look at some of them.

Most Amiable Mother Etymologically, the term “amiable” means “worthy of being or deserving to be loved”. Mary is no doubt worthy and deserving. And she is, among others, because the other sense of this term, “a likeable, affable, friendly, educated, well-mannered and easily approached person” can also be applied to her. Mary is amiable because her relationship with us always offers us a friendly face, full of tenderness. When we resort to her, we do not have the im-pression that we are met with eyes full of wrath, no matter how frequently we deserve it. She is all kindness, the hand reaching out to us when we are still knocked down by the weight of our sins so as to stand up towards grace. Mary, undoubtedly, is “God’s smile”, “God’s caress”, not in the ontological sense, for she is not God, but in the sense of representation, of she sent by God, given that she is His mother, as she is ours, to show us the divine tenderness, the maternal dimension of God. Let us give thanks to the Lord for this and thank Him also because, when we pray this litany, we become –or should become—aware that we also, like Mary, kike God, must be amiable: worthy of being loved and bearers of the divine smile and tenderness before others.

Purpose: Be thankful to God because in Mary He has shown us his “maternal face”, His affability, His tenderness to have given her to us as our Mother and try to imitate the Virgin.

Vamos a reflexionar sobre la palabra de Dios “‘¿Quién dice la gente que es el hijo del hombre?’. Ellos contesta-ron: ‘Unos que Juan el Bautista, otros que Elías....’. Él les pregun-tó: ‘Y vosotros, ¿quién decís que soy yo?’. Simón Pedro tomó la palabra y dijo: ‘Tú eres el Mesías, el hijo de Dios vivo’. Jesús le

respondió: ‘¡Dichoso tú, Simón, ...... Ahora yo te digo: Tú eres Pe-dro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia, y el poder del infierno

no la derrotará.’” (Mt 16, 13-18) La pregunta de Jesús a los discípulos sobre la opinión de la gente sobre él parece tan actual como lo son las encuestas que continuamente se están haciendo en una sociedad como la nues-tra, sometida al dictado de lo que piense la mayoría. Pero, en realidad, lo que a Cristo le interesa es saber lo que piensa sobre él cada uno de nosotros. Jesús nos pregunta directamente: ¿Quién soy yo para ti?. Y no se conforma con una respuesta de libro, teórica y retórica. Por-que de poco sirve decir: "Eres el primero en mi vida", si luego, en la práctica, lo más importante es la televisión -a juzgar por el nú-mero de horas que pasamos ante ella en comparación con los es-casos minutos que dedicamos a estar con el Señor rezando- o el trabajo o las diversiones. Sólo cuando reconocemos, con obras y no con palabras, el señorío de Dios en nuestra vida, sólo entonces Cristo puede con-fiarnos la tarea de evangelizar, de ser sus testigos, de ser piedras sólidas sobre las que poder construir el edificio de la Iglesia. Mientras tanto, por muchas cualidades que tengamos y por mu-cha necesidad que haya, Él no puede contar con personas para las cuales Dios es una cosa más y a veces ni siquiera eso. Dios te está necesitando, pero para poder encargarte el trabajo que te tiene encomendado quiere ocupar el primer lugar en tu corazón. Si no lo puede hacer, será su culpa. Propósito: Compara esta semana el tiempo dedicado a la oración y a las obras de caridad con el que pasas ante el televisor. Si Dios es lo primero, reza más y ve más a misa.

Let’s reflect on God’s Word ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah…’. ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are

you, Simon…. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overpower

it’.“ (Matthew 16: 13-18) Jesus’ question to his disciples about people’s opinion of Him seems as recent as the surveys constantly made in our socie-ty, subordinated to the dictates of what most think. But, in reality, what God wants to know is what each one of us thinks of Him. Jesus asks us directly: “Who am I to you?“. And he is not satisfied with an answer by the book, theoretical and rhetorical. It is useless to say: “You are first in my life”, if afterwards, in prac-tice, television is more important - judging by the number of hours spent in front of it versus the limited number of minutes devoted to be with God by praying - or work or fun. Only when we recognize, with deeds not words, the rule of God in our life, only then God can entrust us with the task of evangelizing, to bear witness, of being solid rocks on which to build its Church. Meantime, regardless our qualities or the need there may be, He cannot count on people for whom God is just one more thing and sometimes even less. God needs of you, but to be able to entrust you with the work He has assigned you He wants to take first place in your heart. If He cannot do it, it is your fault. Intention: This week compare the time devoted to prayer and charity with which you spend watching television. If God is first, pray more and go more to mass.
