For two centuries, mariners have trusted the high quali-ty of British Admiralty charts. Maryland Nautical Sales has provided their clients with these reliable products, and has just been approved to offer fully-updated Print on Demand British Admiralty charts, produced at MNS Baltimore headquarters.

MNS representatives Charles Singer and Eric Beswick recently visited the U.K. Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in Taunton, England to finalize the Print on Demand (POD) arrangements. UKHO produces and maintains the British Admiralty (BA) charts and product line, and enforces ex-acting standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the products. Cloud-based, encrypted POD capability is authorized for a very select number of chart agents with proven credentials, including ISO 9001 certification.

As International Admiralty Chart Agents, MNS car-tographers have thus far hand-corrected BA charts using Admiralty Notice to Mariners before distrib-uting them to their clients. MNS will phase opera-tions from hand-correction to POD in accordance with BA requirements. Singer notes "POD allows us to offer our mariner clients highly reliable British Admiralty charts on very short notice. Our mission, and that of the UKHO, is safety of life at sea."

“The Navigator”“The Navigator” Newsletter

Maryland Nautical is now officially printing and distributing NOAA's Print-on-Demand United States Coast Pilot® series Volumes 1 - 9.

All books are printed with the most current corrections and bound in book form. Mariners will be able to print the weekly updates as they are available from the weekly Notice to Mariners.

Traditionally, U.S. Coast Pilot volumes have been printed annually in quantity, then stored and sold via retail sales agents. This method resulted in the sale of a gradually obsolete product, as a mariner might purchase a new volume that would require a year's worth of weekly corrections to comply with feder-al carriage regulations.

To improve this process, NOAA has implemented Print-on-Demand technolo-gy. NOAA updates the U.S. Coast Pilot volumes weekly and provides digital versions in PDF format to Maryland Nautical who will then print from the up-to-date files as copies are ordered.

The UK trip included a visit to the International Maritime Organi-

zation (IMO) in London to discuss the IMO Bookshelf, now availa-

ble from Maryland Nautical Sales. IMO Bookshelf is a CD con-

taining e-reader software and IMO e-reader digital titles. Users

purchase an activation code to unlock the titles of choice. Con-

tents can be searched, printed, resized and bookmarked. IMO

Bookshelf essentially reduces a shelf full of required IMO titles to

a single CD.

Beswick comments "Our UK trip was extremely productive, and

we're now fully prepared to meet our clients' time-sensitive re-

quirements with Print on Demand British Admiralty Charts, and

the IMO Bookshelf." Pictured above: International Maritime

Maryland Nautical Sales attains ISO 9001 Certification

On August 9th, Maryland Nautical Sales was audited onsite by the Independent Certification Body IMSM and certified to the ISO 9001:2008 standard. Maryland Nautical’s Procedures, Processes, Sales and Management Practices were thor-oughly reviewed and assessed and found to be fully compliant with the require-ments of the ISO Standard. Maryland Nautical Sales has the distinction of being the first US-based chart agent to be ISO certified.

The ISO 9001:2008 standard establishes the base criteria for Maryland Nautical’s Quality Management System. It encompasses all areas of MNS, including people, services and processes, and streamlines the entire operation. MNS President Bob

Davis indicates that MNS has been deeply involved in the certification process for the past 4 months. Through the prep-aration, MNS discovered that they were already implementing 80% of the ISO required processes. However, they were not recording and tracking these processes to find areas of improvement. Davis notes “our primary motivation was improved customer service, and ISO 9001 certification ensures our continual process improvement.”

Mariners have the option of hand-correcting charts with Local Notice to Mariners, or purchas-ing OceanGrafix Print-on-Demand charts com-pletely updated. At Maryland Nautical, we have the printers and capacity to produce most NOAA charts "on demand", fully updated daily from NO-AA's digital database.

I would like to take this op-portunity to express my sin-cerest thanks to the Mary-land Nautical staff, especially Eric Beswick, for the extraor-

dinary job performed with the support of all navigational needs for the ARC vessels worldwide. By being directly involved with all requests from each of the ARC vessels, Eric has coordinated the staff at Maryland Nautical to ac-complish difficult tasks and deliver materials to the re-questing vessels without any schedule hesitation and wherever the port may be. By Maryland Nautical keeping up with automatic chart distribution procedures, it has made the job for each Captain easier to keep updated with required current charts on board. I highly recom-mend Maryland Nautical to any company requiring nauti-cal materials and services.

What Customers are saying...

I have worked on 4 differ-ent ARC ships in the past 1-1/2 years (Liberty, Honor, Patriot, and Independence II). All 4 vessels have their chart services supplied by Maryland Nautical. On

each ship, we have required assistance from MNS for different reasons. Our point of contact in each instance was Eric Beswick. ALWAYS promptly responded to our requests and trying to assist us with problems we were having. Mostly, problems were with the ship's ECDIS charts (permits & corrections). Eric, using explicit e-mail instructions, guided us through the issues on each ship. On other occasions, he has assisted us in updating our inventory and supplying us with updates.

- Captain Kimberly A. Borges, Master M/V Independence II

“I can recall a few times where Eric Beswick has gone above and beyond to keep our vessels moving without delay. Between 2005 to 2009, Vane Broth-ers was heavy into New Barge & Tug Construction. Eric worked late nights and weekends to handle our demand with our tugs navigating to the Gulf and the Great Lakes. Eric consistently provides invaluable service to Vane Line Bunkering”

– Ed Adams, Senior Services & Maintenance Buyer Vane Brothers

Meet Maryland Nautical’s Shipping & Receiving Department

Brandon Hoffman - Shipping, Receiving & Packaging

In 1931, 17 year old seaman John Hart went to sea for the first time . After 18 years he came ashore working as a compass adjuster at the Baltimore branch of Wilfred O. White and Sons.

Wilfred came from a shipbuilding family dating back to 15th century Eng-land. Born in Melbourne Australia, Mr. White came to the United States in 1898 and married Ruth Eldridge, the daughter of George Eldridge, who charted the first tide and current tables in the U.S. The White family started a small nautical instrument dealership which became Wilfred O. White and Sons .

Captain Hart showed a quick grasp of the retail business, greatly expanding the inventory at Wilfred O. White. Captain Hart purchased the Baltimore branch in 1957, changing the name to Maryland Nautical Sales, Inc.

In 1975, he sold Maryland Nautical Sales to William Bridges and his son, who operated the business at the downtown Baltimore location. In 1986, the compa-ny was purchased by Robert and Brian Davis, who moved the business to Hull Street in the old Port of Baltimore neighborhood of Locust Point.

In 1993, Maryland Nautical (and its affiliates, Davis Ship Service, Inc. and The Davis Group, Inc.) were moved four blocks to its present location on E. Clement St. - 7,000 sq. ft. facility with additional storage, parking and an expanded show-room.

As a supplier of worldwide charts and publications of the U.K. Hydrographic Office (British Admiralty) since 1987, Mary-land Nautical was granted “International Admiralty Chart Agent" status by the UKHO in 1999, and is now authorized to produce Print on Demand charts.
