The Nurse Extern Program is a 6 week academic program and offers 3 credit hours through Bellarmine University. You do not have to be a student at Bellarmine to apply. If you are chosen for the extern program, KentuckyOne Health will cover the cost of tuition for you. You must be in an Associates or Bachelors degree program to qualify. The program is designed to increase your nursing knowledge and skills as well as acquaint you with our Nursing Departments. It will facilitate your transition from student to nurse. You will have the opportunity to meet other students and work with our nurses in the clinical areas. In addition, KentuckyOne Health will provide a stipend of $12 per hour. KentuckyOne Health was formed when two major Kentucky health care organizations came together in early 2012. Important Dates for the 2014 Program

April 1 – Application Deadline, all applications must be postmarked by March 31st.

May 26, 27, 28, 29, and June 2 Orientation - Please note that depending on the facility, you may be expected to attend additional orientation classes during the first two weeks of the program. Orientation days will vary for each facility. Once chosen for the program, you will be provided with a complete calendar.

July 8 - Last day of program. Clinical will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from

6:45am-7:00pm. There will not be make-up days.

Academic Nurse Extern Program Fact Sheet

Introduction

KentuckyOne Health Louisville will again be offering a Summer Nurse Extern program. This 6 week program is affiliated with Bellarmine University and will provide 3 credit hours on satisfactory completion; however you can be enrolled in ANY accredited nursing program. This program will enable the nursing student to supplement school experience with patient care management, organizational, and time management skills under the guidance of a RN preceptor and clinical faculty. It will also provide the opportunity to identify a specific area of clinical interest. The student will set goals and objectives based on personal needs with the clinical faculty. Program Objectives

Develop an understanding of staff nurse role and other health provider roles at KentuckyOne Health in the Louisville area.

Increase patient care management, organizational and time management skills.

Demonstrate greater proficiency with clinical skills. Experience professional growth. Experience increased self-confidence in caring for the adult patient.

Application

Completed application must be received by the application deadline. Must submit the enclosed Official Skills Checklist, completed by a clinical

instructor from the student’s school. Must submit a resume with a cover letter. Must submit two letters of recommendation, one from a faculty member, and

if you are a current employee one from a nurse on your unit. Must submit a current Official Transcript with application, unless you are an

accepted Educational Loan Student. Current employees must submit the enclosed Reference Sheet filled out by

your nurse manager. Must submit a copy of a current AHA CPR card.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to KentuckyOne Health educational loan students and current employees.

Must be in an Associates or Bachelors degree program. Current employees must provide reference from Nurse Manager. Enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing (GPA at least 3.0). Must be entering the last year of a nursing program.

Must graduate in December or May following the summer program. Summer Work Experience

The program is planned for 24 hours per week, 12 hour shifts, 6:45am - 7pm, on Tuesday and Wednesdays, over six weeks.

Emphasis will be on increasing knowledge and skill in the clinical area to facilitate transition to the RN role.

The student will receive a stipend ($12 per hour) for the summer program. The scholarship student must be able to meet the 2 or 3 day/week extern

commitment in addition to their KentuckyOne Health staff commitment on their unit if they are a KentuckyOne Health employee.

Post Summer Graduation After the summer program, the extern student will be hired into a pool extern position or another available position. The KentuckyOne Health employee will continue in their previous staff position on their unit after the summer program or may elect to transfer to a pool extern position if available.
