MASONRY SUPPORT SYSTEMSStructures with brick or stone cladding willusually necessitate the use of a stainless steelsupport system for the masonry.

Bracket Angle Support SystemAnconOptima is unlike welded systems, thebrackets and angles are supplied as separatecomponents. This provides greater flexibility inthe final fixing position of the brackets andmakes the system easier to handle on site.Standard systems are available to support amasonry load of up to 14kN/m. Brackets forthese systems are stocked to suit cavities from60mm to 150mm in 5mm increments. Theycan be changed on site to allow for cavityvariations (pages 8-11).

Ancon MDC Systems have welded bracketsand are designed to suit specific applications. They are available in various configurations andare ideal for supporting special masonryfeatures. Material content is optimised toensure the most economic solution isdesigned (pages 12-14).

Continuous Angle Support SystemAncon CFA Systems are mainly used wherecavities are small or there is a requirement forthe cavity to be closed at the support position(pages 20-21).

Individual Bracket Support SystemAncon Individual Brackets provide greatflexibility in design. They are ideal for thesupport of brickwork curved on plan(pages 22-23).

Stonework SupportNatural stone cladding is often a combinationof large individually-sized stones and requiresparticular attention. Ancon MDC/S StoneworkSupports can be designed in a variety ofconfigurations to suit the particular application(pages 24-27).

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSStructures with brick or stone cladding willusually necessitate the use of stainless steelsupport for the masonry over horizontalmovement joints. Differential movement, corrosion resistance, type of cladding andframe type, all need to be considered.

Differential MovementThe maximum size of a masonry panel shouldbe restricted to limit the effects of differentialmovement. This is particularly important if claybrickwork is used with concrete blockworkand a concrete frame. The outer leaf ofbuildings not exceeding four storeys or12 metres in height, whichever is less, maybe uninterrupted for its full height. For otherbuildings, the outer leaf should be supportedat intervals of not more than 9 metres orthree storeys, whichever is less, as stated inBS 5628 : Part 1 which, since the withdrawalof this British Standard, remains best practice. To allow for a vertical movement of around1mm per metre, movement joints are generallypositioned at every storey or every secondstorey. They are also incorporated in manybuildings of less than four storeys or 12 metresin height.

Horizontal Movement JointsThe support will be positioned directly over thehorizontal movement joint. The joint will oftenincorporate a compressible filler and should beof sufficient size to allow for expansion of themasonry below and any shrinkage ordeflection of the structural frame. Theunderside of the support system should bepositioned around 2mm above the joint to

allow for the support leg to settle whensupporting the brickwork above. The clear jointbelow should be at least 10mm where there isa single storey height of brickwork below thesupport system. Where there are two storeysor more of brickwork below the supportsystem, the clear joint should be sufficient toaccommodate all expected movements. Thismay result in clear joints in excess of 10mm.Damp-proofing is normally located at thesupport position. Wall ties should beincorporated within 300mm above and belowthe support.

Fixing MethodsThere are various methods of fixing AnconSupport Systems to the structure. Cast-inchannels with ‘T’ bolts or site drilled expansionbolts can be used with concrete frames. Forsteel frames the choice is set screws or AnconSteelgrip into holes in the steel edge member,or where there is a metal deck floor, AnconCombiDeck has a horizontal channel thataccepts ‘T’ bolts. A range of suitable fixings isincluded on page 34. Further information isgiven on pages 15 to 17, and in the AnconChannel and Bolt Fixings brochure.

TolerancesIt is important to select the correct supportsystem to ensure that building tolerances canbe accommodated. Adjustment will berequired in all three planes.

Ancon brackets have a slot at the back toprovide vertical adjustment. A serrated surfaceprevents any slip. Longitudinal adjustment isprovided by an Ancon cast-in channel inconcrete structures, or horizontally slotted holesin steel framed structures. The AnconOptimaSystem features a fixing zone providing a totalof 50mm horizontal adjustment allowing thesystem to be fixed to pre-drilled holes ratherthan slots in steelwork and eliminates clasheswith reinforcing bars in concrete.

Subject to the type of fixing used,AnconOptima brackets can be changed onsite to suit variations in the structural edgebeam. Other systems accommodate suchvariations by adding shims between thesystem and the structure, or by increasingthe bearing of the brickwork. The maximumthickness of shims should not exceed theoutside diameter of the fixing or 16mm,whichever is less.

Manufacturing TolerancesUnless otherwise agreed, the tolerancesapplicable to cold formed sections are shownin the table below.

Corrosion ResistanceAncon Support Systems are manufacturedfrom grade 1.4301 (304) stainless steel andwill be suitable for most building applications. In particularly corrosive environments, or wherepart of the support will be visible, grade1.4401 (316) should be considered. Bi-metalliccorrosion may occur in a damp environmentwhere the stainless steel support system isbolted to the structural steel frame. This willnot affect the stainless steel, but could slightlyincrease the corrosion rate of the carbon steel. This can be prevented by excluding moisturefrom the detail, or by isolating the twodissimilar metals. Isolation patches areavailable from Ancon Building Products for usewith Ancon Support Systems. Furtherinformation is given in our brochure, ‘The Useof Stainless Steel in the Construction Industry’.

Standard SystemsStandard systems, referenced AnconOptima10, 12 and 14, support masonry loads of upto 10kN, 12kN and 14kN respectively. Allcomponents are available from stock.

Brackets are available to suit cavities from60mm to 150mm and are stocked in 5mmincrements. Depending on the fixing type, brackets can be changed on site for one of adifferent depth to allow for cavity variations. Two brackets of a different depth can be usedon the same angle.

The brackets used across the three standardsystems are universal. The differingperformance of the three systems is generatedby the varying length and thickness of theangle and the fixing centres of the brackets.

Standard left-hand and right-hand corners areavailable.

Not being specific to a particular project, unused components can be moved to anotherproject or, for a small restocking charge, returned to Ancon.

ANCONOPTIMAThe Industry’s growing emphasis on speed ofconstruction, and the inability of weldedbracket support systems to provide sufficientadjustment on site, led Ancon to developAnconOptima.

AnconOptima is a bracket angle masonrysupport system. Unlike welded systems, thebrackets and angles are supplied as separatecomponents. This provides greater flexibility inthe final fixing position of the brackets andmakes the system easier to handle and movearound site.

Systems comprise laser-cut brackets, two-step angles with pre-marked fixing zones andlocking wedges to ensure the correct contactis achieved between the two.

Standard AnconOptima systems are specifiedfrom the simple load/cavity charts shown onpage 11. Please note the fixing type may affectthe maximum masonry load of the systemspecified.

Non-Standard SystemsAnconOptima was conceived by Ancon’stechnical staff primarily as a standard solutionfor loads up to 14kN/m, however it can bedesigned to suit other applications. Althoughthe components of a non-standardAnconOptima system are not available fromstock and cannot be returned to Ancon forrestocking, they still provide greater flexibility inthe fixing position and are less cumbersome tohandle on site than a comparable weldedbracket system.

Typical applications of a non-standardAnconOptima system are loads up to 20kN/mor where a different angle position on thebracket is needed e.g. projecting angle.

Cavity VariationsThe ability of welded bracket support systemsto accommodate variations in the line of thestructure is limited by the maximum thicknessof shims, normally 12mm. Some additionaladjustment will be possible by varying thebearing of the brickwork on the support anglebut this will be very limited, particularly wherepistol bricks are used.

When using a standard AnconOptima system, brackets are available from stock to suitcavities from 60mm to 150mm in 5mmincrements. They can be changed on site toallow for variations in the edge beam. Shimscan be used for fine adjustments and shouldnever need to be more than 4mm thick.

AnconOptima accommodates variations in the line of the edge beam.Brackets of a different depth can be used on the same angle

Adjustment of AnconOptima

100mm 100mm

Vertical AdjustmentVertical adjustment is achieved by the deepslot in the back of the bracket.

Horizontal AdjustmentAnconOptima angles have a 100mm pre-marked fixing zone which provides 50mmhorizontal adjustment.

If fixing into concrete with expansion bolts, the bracket can be moved to eliminate clashesbetween the bolts and reinforcing bars.

Horizontal adjustment can be increased byfixing the system to an Ancon channel castinto the face of the concrete.

If fixing to steelwork, the brackets can bemoved to align with the location of a hole, negating the need for a more expensivehorizontal slot to be provided.

Benefits of Standard Systems

Setting Out of Standard SystemsUnlike bespoke systems, there is no time-consuming setting out of individuallyreferenced components with a standardsystem to a detailed layout drawing.

Cutting on siteStandard AnconOptima systems are notdesigned for specific buildings and certainangles will need to be cut on site to suit thelength required. Each angle section must haveat least two brackets.

CornersStandard left-hand and right-hand corners areavailable. Each corner section requires threebrackets in order to achieve the requiredperformance. These sections should neverbe cut.

InstallationInstallation of AnconOptima provides significanttime savings over welded support systems. The individual components are easier to movearound site, often without hiring crane time. The preferred technique of installers is to leveland fix two brackets and simply slide the angleinto position. This reduces the time spenttightening and loosening the fixing bolts of awelded bracket system, in order to achieve alevel horizontal shelf. Where space limitationsprevent the angle from sliding, the brackets canbe positioned on the angle and conventionallyfixed; the smaller lengths of angle simplify thismethod of installation. When the brackets andangle are in position a locking wedge is tappedwith a hammer through the notches in eachbracket. These wedges ensure the correctcontact is achieved between angle andbrackets. A detailed installation guide isavailable from Ancon.

Details for Specifying and OrderingStandard AnconOptima Systems simplify thetotal supply process. They consist of standardcomponents, all available from stock, and canbe specified by using the simple load/cavitycharts below. Specification does not involvethe completion of detailed layout drawings andnot being specific to any project, excess itemsfrom one site can be used elsewhere.

Standard BracketsAnconOptima brackets are readily availablefrom stock to suit cavities from 60mm to150mm in 5mm increments. Brackets for widercavities are available on request. A lockingwedge is supplied with each bracket to ensurethe correct contact is achieved between angleand bracket.

Notes to above tables: Minimum slab thickness assumes the support angle is level with the bottom of the slab. A thicker slab will be required where this is not the case.*FAZ 12/30 A4 is an Ancon High Performance Bolt. **FBN12/45 A4-145 is an Ancon Single Expansion Bolt. ANCON MDC BRACKET ANGLESUPPORT SYSTEMAncon MDC Bracket Angle Support Systemscan carry over 8 metres of brickwork andaccommodate any width of cavity from 40mmin its standard form. The brackets are weldedto the angle and the material content of bothcomponents is optimised to ensure the mosteconomic solution is designed.

Design VariationsThe Ancon MDC System can be suppliedin a variety of configurations to suit particularapplications and support special masonryfeatures. The size of the support angle can bevaried to suit the thickness and height of themasonry to be carried. Bracket spacing, depthand height are all varied to suit loadings, fixingposition and cavity width.

There are several variations of the standardMDC System. MDC/P has the bracketprojecting below the structure, MDC/R has areversed angle welded to the bracket, andMDC/I is a specially inverted system with thesupport angle at the top of the bracket. Thesevariations allow the support leg of the angle tobe positioned anywhere from the top of thebracket to a position below the bottom ofthe bracket. Non-standard AnconOptima canalso be supplied in these variations (see page 8).

Soldier courses can be suspended fromMDC systems by using stirrups at 225mmcentres. The stirrups fit over the angle andstitching rods span between the stirrups, supporting cored or holed bricks.

The Ancon MDC System can be supplied withextra components to suit the application e.g.closer plates, expanded metal etc.

AdjustmentAdjustment is provided in every direction toallow for tolerance in the structural frame. The serrated and slotted face of the bracketallows for vertical adjustment. Cast-in channelwill provide virtually unlimited horizontaladjustment; slotted holes in a steel edgemember will offer more limited adjustment.Shims can be included between the bracketand the frame up to a maximum thickness ofthe outside diameter of the fixing bolt, or16mm, whichever is less.

As an alternative to shims, AnconExtension Plates can sometimes be usedto increase the bearing for the brickwork. The support leg of the angle must providea minimum of 52mm bearing for standardsingle skin brickwork for the entire lengthof the support. Without this bearing thebrickwork may become unstable. Thismust be checked before work proceeds.

The extension plates are pushed onto theleg of the angle with the flat surface ontop. They are adjusted until the requiredamount of extension is achieved, this willbe from 5mm to 17mm.

The plates can provide extra bearing butthey should not extend more than 20mmfrom the front of the angle. Extensionplates are usually 400mm long and fixedwith a nominal gap between the plates ofapproximately 10mm.

Ancon Extension Plates are designedto be used with Ancon SupportSystems. The particular applicationshould be agreed with Ancon technicalstaff to ensure that both the supportsystem and extension plates aresuitable. Contact Ancon's TechnicalServices Team for more information. UK Patent No. 2 305 194

CONCRETE FRAMESAncon Masonry Support Systems are generallyfixed to either Ancon 28/15, 30/20 or 38/17Channels cast into the edge of the concrete. For applications where particularly high loadsare involved Ancon 40/25 Channel may needto be considered. Details of these channels areshown on page 34. The use of cast-inchannels allows the support system to be fixedto the structure with ‘T’ bolts and moved alongthe line of the channel into the correct position. The slot in the back of the bracket allowsvertical adjustment. This permits greaterfreedom in the positioning of the cast-inchannel to avoid horizontal reinforcement.

As an alternative, Ancon Expansion or ResinBolts can be used when cast-in channels havenot been included in the edge beam.

STEEL FRAMESAncon Support Systems can be fixed directlyto uncased structural steel frames. The fixingpositions can usually be at constant centres tosimplify the fabrication of the steelwork.

For cavities larger than 75mm there maybe a requirement for additional fixings nearexternal corners. When fixing any AnconSystem other than AnconOptima horizontalslots should be provided in the steel edgebeam stiffeners to allow lateral tolerance.

If excessive movement of the support systemis to be avoided, the structural edge membermust be designed to minimise deflections andaccommodate the torsional forces createdby the eccentric load from the brickwork.

Bi-metallic ContactCorrosion of the steel frame may be slightlyincreased where there is direct contact withstainless steel in a damp environment. This willnot affect the stainless steel and can beavoided by isolating the two dissimilar metals. This can be achieved by painting the contactarea or by incorporating a separating membranethat can be supplied with the Ancon SupportSystem. For further information see pages 6-7.

AdjustmentThe adjustment provided by AnconCombiDeck is identical to the use of cast-inchannels. The serrated and slotted face of anAncon bracket allows for vertical adjustment. The built-in channel will provide virtuallyunlimited horizontal adjustment. Shims can beincluded between the bracket and the frameup to a maximum thickness of the outsidediameter of the fixing bolt or 16mm, whicheveris less. As an alternative, Ancon ExtensionPlates can be used to increase the bearing forthe brickwork (page 13).

MDC Support System Bolted to CombiDeck and a Corner Column

ANCON COMBIDECKAncon CombiDeck has been developedfor use with the permanent metal deckshuttering of steel framed structures.CombiDeck edge support is supplied with anintegral channel section that accepts standardAncon ‘T’ Head Bolts.

CombiDeck is manufactured in zinc coatedmild steel with a stainless steel or galvanisedsteel channel. Alternatively the completeassembly can be manufactured in stainlesssteel.

It is supplied in standard three metre lengths ina variety of heights to suit the floor thickness.Corner assemblies and special units areavailable to suit particular applications.

The stainless steel channel welded into theedge support will usually be Ancon 30/20,positioned 55mm below the top. For allowableloads for Ancon CombiDeck 30/20 pleaserefer to page 34.

The thickness of the floor slab will determinethe capacity of the support system. A 130mmthick slab will limit the height of single skinbrickwork to 4 metres. Thicker slabs will permitmore masonry to be supported. AnconCombiDeck does not require specialreinforcement details providing the slabincludes at least the equivalent of H8 Shape13 bars at a maximum of 150mm centres.

Design VariationsMost Ancon Support Systems can be usedwith CombiDeck.

Welded CombiDeck corner units are availablefor external corners, where it is not possible tofix directly to a corner column.

Details for Specification and OrderingAncon MDC Systems and non-standardAnconOptima Systems are tailored to suit eachproject, based on the cavity size at the supportand the masonry load to be supported. Anconwill design an economical configuration ofchannel, bracket and angle.

For applications using CombiDeck thespecification is as follows:-

System / CD / type / cavity / masonry loade.g. MDC / CD / R / 75 / 5.6

Ancon will design a MDC System to fix toCombiDeck with a reversed angle to suit a75mm cavity and carry 5.6 kN/metre runof masonry.

ReferencesMDC/CD Standard CombiDeck system

MDC/CD/R CombiDeck system with reversedangle

The CombiDeck edge support is specified asfollows:-

CombiDeck / channel size / height of edgee.g. CombiDeck / 30 / 140

This will have a 30/20 channel and will suit afloor with a depth of 140mm.

Fixing CombiDeck to SteelworkThe standard edge trim used with metal deckpermanent shuttering is designed to retain thewet concrete during construction of the floor.Ancon CombiDeck also has to support theexternal brickwork. It is therefore veryimportant that the outside edge of theCombiDeck remains vertical. The installationprocedure and allowable overhang may bedifferent to those of the edge trim whichCombiDeck replaces.

The CombiDeck should be fixed to thesteelwork or metal deck at 300mm maximumcentres.

Fixing straps are supplied to restrain the topedge of the CombiDeck. These will bepositioned within 100mm of each butt joint orend and at centres not exceeding 450mm.The straps are supplied in 1.5 metre lengthsfor cutting and bending on site.

The outer edge of the CombiDeck can extendbeyond the steelwork up to a maximumdistance of 100mm. If a greater distance isrequired, both the metal deck and theCombiDeck will need to be propped.

A minimum of 125mm should be left betweenthe outer edge of the CombiDeck and the metaldeck to allow sufficient space for the channelanchors and the local reinforcement. Where thedecking is at 90˚ to the CombiDeck, the opentroughs must be filled to retain the wet concrete. The butt joints between lengths of CombiDeckshould be taped to prevent concrete leakage.

Bi-metallic ContactCorrosion of the steel frame may be slightlyincreased where there is direct contact withstainless steel in a damp environment. This willnot affect the stainless steel and can beavoided by isolating the two dissimilar metals. This can be achieved by painting the contactarea or by incorporating a separatingmembrane that can be supplied with theAncon CFA Support System. For furtherinformation see pages 6-7.

ANCON CFA CONTINUOUS ANGLESUPPORT SYSTEMAncon CFA Systems can carry over 8 metresof brickwork and accommodate various cavitywidths. For many applications, particularlywhere large cavities are involved, the AnconMDC Support System may prove to be a moreeconomical solution. Continuous angles aremore suitable for applications where cavitiesare small or there is a requirement for thecavity to be closed at the support position. The angles are cold formed and will normallybe supplied in lengths of up to 4 metres.

Design VariationsIn addition to variations in angle size andthickness, an inverted version, the CFA/I, hasthe support leg at the top and the fixing slotspositioned closer to the corner of the angle.

Steel FramesAncon CFA Support Systems can be fixeddirectly to uncased structural steel frames.Universal beams will require an angle to bewelded between the flanges at each bracketposition. Horizontal slots should always beprovided in the steel edge beam to allowlateral tolerance. The angle will have verticalslots with serrated pads welded to the angle.

The structural edge member must bedesigned to minimise deflections andaccommodate the torsional forces createdby the eccentric load from the brickwork,if excessive movement of the support systemis to be avoided.

Concrete FramesThe CFA System can be fixed to cast-inchannels or with expansion bolts. The supportangle will either be provided with horizontalslots to suit AnconLock Toothed Channels orwith vertical slots and serrated pads to suitcontinuous channels cast horizontally. Forfurther information see page 34.

AdjustmentAdjustment is provided in every direction toallow for tolerance in the structural frame.Vertical slots in the angle with serrated padsallow ±25mm adjustment. Horizontaladjustment is virtually unlimited when fixing toa continuous cast-in channel and will dependon the length of the slotted holes in the edgemember when fixing to steel.

The serrated lips of the AnconLock Channelpermit a vertical adjustment of up to ±28mm.Slotted holes (18 x 60mm) in the angle allowhorizontal adjustment of ±22mm. Setting OutAncon can provide drawings showing thelocation of the fixings (cast-in channels forconcrete frames, bolt positions for steelframes). Angle units will be referenced andscheduled and all details submitted forapproval before manufacture.

Fabricated AnglesMany features will need special designattention, especially if double skin brickwork isto be supported. Fabricated angles withstiffeners, used in conjunction with the AnconMDC System for adjacent single skinbrickwork, is often the best solution.

Curved MasonryCurved angles can be supplied for arches orother applications. Where masonry is curvedon plan, Ancon can provide either curvedangles, individual brackets (pages 22-23) or anMDC System (pages 12-14) in short anglelengths.

Details for Specification and OrderingAncon CFA Systems are tailored to suit eachjob, based on the cavity size at the supportand the load to be carried. Ancon will designthe most economical system. Specification isas follows:-

ANCON INDIVIDUAL BRACKETSUPPORT SYSTEMThree versions of the Ancon Individual BracketSupport System are available, MDB, LDB andAMK. MDB brackets at 225mm centres willcarry 8 metres of brickwork and LDB bracketswill carry 4 metres. This capacity will reducewhen they are used at 450mm centres tosupport blockwork.

The system comprises individual bracketspositioned at each perpend, bolted back toa continuous channel cast into the edge of theconcrete. The 4mm thick support plate of thestandard bracket can be accommodatedwithin a 10mm bed joint. LDA and MDA anglesupport brackets will generally be requiredat vertical movement joints and corners. These brackets have thicknesses of 6mm and8mm respectively.

Design VariationsTwo applications for individual brackets are forthe support of soldier courses from above, andfor the support of non-structural archedbrickwork. Both these applications involveindividual brackets at 225mm centres thathave stirrups welded to the underside.Stitching rods span the stirrups and supportthe three bricks between the brackets.

The use of LDB/IS brackets with the stiffenerbelow the support plate provides greaterfreedom for the brickwork above.

Ancon Soffit Angles are used in conjunctionwith LDB/S brackets to extend the support ofsoffit brickwork. These are usually spaced at225mm centres and fixed to Ancon 28/15Cast-in Channel.

AdjustmentAdjustment is provided in every direction toallow for tolerance in the structural frame. Theserrated and slotted face of the bracket allowsfor vertical adjustment. Cast-in channel willprovide virtually unlimited horizontaladjustment. Shims can be included betweenthe bracket and the frame up to a maximumthickness of the outside diameter of the fixingbolt or 16mm, whichever is less.

Design ConsiderationsThe design of stone cladding should be inaccordance with BS 8298 : 1994 Code ofpractice for the design and installation ofnatural stone cladding and lining.

The minimum bearing at the support isgenerally 50% of the thickness of the stone.A single support carrying two stones shouldbe at least 75mm long. Where individualsupports are used, these should be at least50mm long.

The most efficient method is for individualcorbel supports to be positioned at the verticaljoint between two adjacent stones. As analternative, two smaller supports can belocated near each end of each stone. Thesupport of cornice and other particularly largestones will need special attention.

Adjustment ofMDC/S Bracket

ANCON MDC/S STONEWORKSUPPORTSAncon MDC/S Stonework Supports are basedon the MDC masonry support system. Thebracket height and depth are varied to suit thecavity size and the loadings. The dimensionsof the angle are selected to suit the stoneworkto be supported.

Design VariationsThe MDC/S Stonework Support can besupplied in a variety of configurations to suitthe particular application.

Ancon MDC/SD has a dowel to restrain thebase of each stone, MDC/SC has the bottomleg of the angle inclined at 15˚ to providerestraint where the support has to bepositioned above the base of the stone.

AdjustmentThe serrated and slotted face of the MDC/Sbracket allows for vertical adjustment. Cast-inchannel will provide horizontal adjustment, butbecause fixing positions can be difficult topredetermine, expansion bolts are often used.Shims can be included between the bracketand the frame up to a maximum thickness ofthe outside diameter of the fixing bolt, or16mm, whichever is less.

Details for Specification and OrderingAncon Stonework Supports are generallydesigned to suit specific contracts. Ancontechnical staff will be pleased to discuss themost appropriate support system. Standardstonework supports may however be specifiedas follows:-

Corrosion ResistanceAncon Lintels are manufactured fromAustenitic stainless steel and will not requireany further corrosion protection.

Thermal PerformanceThe thermal transmittance, i.e. ‘U’ value, ofany wall construction depends on the thermalcharacteristics of the individual componentsbeing used. The design of both the HousingLintel and Unilintel is such that it allows forcontinuity of construction down to windowhead level.

Housing Lintels are supplied insulated withCFC-free, high density polystyrenemanufactured in accordance with BS 3837 :Part 1 : 2004 to be CFC-free with an ozonedepletion potential of zero.

Structural PerformanceThe safe working loads are derived bycalculation and supported by tests to establishtheir validity.

Load RatiosThe safe working loads for Housing Lintels andUnilintels in the tables on pages 30 and 31 arefor situations where the total distributed load onthe lintel is shared between the inner and outerleaves in ratios of between 1:1 and 3:1respectively. For other load ratios, point loads orlintels carrying concrete floors, please contactAncon's Technical Services Team.

InstallationThe lintel should be firmly bedded in mortarwith at least 150mm end bearing onto a fullbrick/block. Please consult Ancon when usinglimited bearing. The front and back of the lintelmust be level before proceeding and aseparate dpc incorporated if required.

When installing Housing Lintels and Unilintelsthe inner and outer leaves should be raisedtogether to avoid twisting the lintel; blocksshould continue for the full length of the innerflange. Masonry should have a maximumoverhang of 25mm and blockwork should bebuilt as close as possible to the upstand. Pointloads should be applied at least 150mm abovelintel flanges.

Although the lintels have a drip edge on theexternal flange to shed moisture, goodpractice should be followed at the junction ofthe window head and lintel by sealing with asuitable mastic, thereby ensuring that drivingrain does not penetrate.

Weep vents are generally required above lintelsat a maximum of 450mm centres. Eachopening should have at least two weep holesand stop ends are required to preventmoisture penetration.

SELECTED FIXINGS OTHER ANCON PRODUCTSMasonry ReinforcementAncon AMR masonry reinforcement improvesthe structural performance of a wall byproviding additional resistance to lateral loads.Located in the bed joint, it has a flattenedprofile to maintain good mortar cover even when lapped or used with wall ties. It isavailable in various standard configurations.

Windposts and Parapet PostsLarge panels of masonry or panels withopenings can often be difficult to justifystructurally. Ancon Windposts are designed toprovide additional lateral support for panels ofbrickwork. The range is manufactured fromstainless steel and includes Windposts whichcan be installed into the inner leaf of blockworkand Windposts for installation into the cavity, which leave the blockwork undisturbed.Parapet Posts are used as vertical support forbrickwork in either parapet or spandrel panels.

Wall Ties and Restraint FixingsIn addition to standard cavity wall ties, Anconmanufactures fixings in a variety of lengthsand types for restraining brickwork, blockwork and stonework. Restraints can befixed to concrete and steelwork, as well asany type of masonry.

Tension SystemsTie bars are increasingly being used instructures and buildings as an architectural aswell as a structural element. Ancon TensionSystems comprise a range of componentswhich can be supplied in carbon steel orstainless steel in a variety of sizes and finishes.A variety of assemblies can be created fromsimple tie bars to complex bracing systemsinvolving several bars joined at one point.

Insulated Balcony ConnectionsAncon Isolan connectors join external concretebalconies to internal concrete floor slabs. Usedto minimise cold bridging, they providecontinuity to the thermal insulation. Standardsystems, comprise rigid CFC-free polystyreneinsulation and duplex stainless steel shearreinforcement, suit most depths of freecantilever and propped cantilever balconies.

Punching Shear ReinforcementUsed within a slab to provide additionalreinforcement around columns, Ancon Shearfixis the ideal solution to the design andconstruction problems associated withpunching shear. The system consists ofdouble-headed studs welded to flat rails, positioned around the column head or base.
