Dear Parishioners, Today’s first reading is another version of a familiar scenario: a prophet ignored, derided and mistreated. In this case, it is Jeremiah who prophesied in Jerusalem during the reign of Zedekiah. For many years he had warned the people of Judah about an oncoming disas-ter. Often referred to as the weeping prophet, Jeremiah scolded the Jewish leadership of the day for its failure to worship the one true God alone, and for its reliance on military alliances over trusting in the Lord. Of course, no one wanted to hear these words of doom

and gloom. In fact, determined to silence him forever, but to avoid having his blood on their hands, those in power contrived to have him ar-rested and imprisoned in a muddy cistern. There, they hoped he would be forgotten and would die. As a prophet, Jeremiah brought division. Not because God sought to instigate such, but because people choosing whether to listen to and follow God’s word – or not – necessarily divided the community. With a message no one wanted to hear, Jeremiah knew that his fidelity to the Lord could possibly result in death and yet he did not shy away from obeying God’s call. On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus tells his disciples that he has come to establish not peace but division. He describes how his message will divide communities and pit family members against family members. Re-lationships will suffer, and he himself will suffer death. As with every pre-vious prophet, those who heard – and still hear – Jesus’ message had the choice to heed it or ignore it. That is what divides. Because when we enter into Christ’s baptism with him, we are united to him. And with each other. Today, our lives as Christians are often marked with the same kinds of turmoil as our ancestors. Just as the cross is never too far from the empty tomb, so struggles and suffering are part of the human experience. Yet as Christians we are challenged to keep our eyes firmly fixed on the Lord – never losing sight of his presence and his offer of grace. We are chal-lenged to choose Christ’s message, uniting ourselves to and drawing strength from all those who walk the pathway of the Christian life with us.

Fr. Tad

St. Clare School News Summer 2019

Parish Bulletin | St. Clare School | August 18 2019

Dear St. Clare Parish Community, A Community of Faith We are off to our first full week of school tomorrow. On Friday, our teachers will be commissioned as catechists during our Friday liturgy. We are each called by name and invited to be light for others. St. Clare School is a mission of the Catholic Church and we take our roles as catechists very seriously, partnering with parents to form students in their faith. Our stu-dents practice the Silver Box philosophy daily and are recog-nized by their teachers each week in the classroom and dur-ing school assemblies. This week, we are continuing the journey of the pilgrim crucifix gifted to the school by Bishop Cantú. The eighth graders will host the crucifix in their classroom where they will focus dis-cussion on a Culture of Vocation. A Light for Others We continue our tradition of service with our service learning program, “Faith in Action” where students in grades six to eight earn credit for Christian service under the tenets of Catholic social teaching. Our parents contribute at least thirty hours per year, per family in direct service to the school. Our all-school Advent and Lenten giving projects and classroom outreach projects give us an opportunity to be light for others, especially those who need it most. This year, we have plans to organize a Day of Service for the school and parish where we will come together to pray together, learn together and perform acts of service together. A Safe Place Where All Are Welcome Once again, we recall the St. Clare School Mission where “We, the St. Clare School Community, joyfully embrace the Gospel mission entrusted by Christ to His Church. Believing that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God, we cherish and celebrate our diverse backgrounds and cultures.” We hope you will continue to pray for us as we answer the call to, “Come, live in the light!” We appreciate your support through prayer, through your con-tribution of time, talent and resources. Please contact the school office to inquire about our school. We are happy to welcome you, our alums and those interested in partnering with us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Church-es of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a com-memoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the “Dormition of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the God bearer.” There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faith-fulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preach-ing in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then real-ized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples.

STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages,

recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when

asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Spon-

sors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contribution member.

So, are you a registered parishioner? If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish

Office and in the Church vestibule.
