Spanish Saludos. Oh cielos, it’s the end of the 2015-16 school

year!!!! Time passed “volando” (flying)! All our classes will finish the unit “La familia” by preparing a family tree. The Kinder and first graders will recognize basic vocabulary and the second to fourth graders will make statements using the vocabulary learned. All classes will continue to respond to basic commands in the classroom. “Apunta y dime” is their favorite activity. The unit to conclude the school year will be “La comida” and for the cultural part we will learn about the “Cinco de Mayo” celebration. In Mrs. Miller’s classroom, 2nd , 3rd and 4th grade classes will be wrapping up prepositional pronouns and will start on direct objects pronouns. Now, we want to say farewell fourth graders!!! It was a joy to be part of your Spanish learning and progress. We will miss you. We wish all our students the very best. Have a safe and fun summer… and practice your Spanish! ¡Hasta pronto!

Nurse Parents…please remember to pick up or request your child’s medication to be sent home by June 2nd.

While on summer break, this would be a good time to see your doctor to complete well visits and update medication paperwork for next year. You can find food allergy, asthma, and medication paperwork on the Pearland ISD website under health. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 281-727-1707 or email me at [email protected].

A few things to remember this summer:

Wear your helmet when riding your skateboard, scooter, or bicycle

Stay hydrated ~ dry plenty of water

Wear sunscreen

Get plenty of rest

Have a great summer…see you next year!

Library

I want to send a heartfelt “Thank You!” to all of our volunteers for our recent book fair! You helped us with everything from organizing the setup, assisting our students as they made purchases, bringing snacks to the teachers for their preview time, and coming in to help put the library back in order when the book fair was over. I want to especially thank: Giselle Garcia, Bill Young, and Julie Arriaga for the many hours they gave to making our book fair a success. We purchased 74 books for our classroom teachers, purchased the 2016 Bluebonnet Books for our library, had 20 student book winners, and were able to purchase instructional needs on the campus. Our students are well on their way to reading over 20,000 books this year! So far you have checked out 19,656 books, and we still have a few more weeks to go before the end of the school year. All books are due back to the library May 13. Don’t forget to visit one of Pearland’s public libraries this summer and find out about all of the exciting summer reading programs they offer!

Music

Hey Massey Mavericks!

Congratulations to the fourth graders! We were so proud of their program in April!

As we are starting to look at the final lessons for the year, the students have been using the iPad cart to review concepts used throughout the year. If the students are interested in playing these games at their house on their computer, they can use this code on the Quaver website (only the 6 digits after the hyphen):

K – 4BLS7C 1st – 2QG9GQ 2nd – X4QXAN 3rd – YY5RW4 4th – PUDNQ8

Or, they can get the free app called Qstudent. Enter that code and have access to all of our iPad games! Hope to hear about your music fun at home!

Art May is an exciting time of the year for art! All of the art your students have

been learning about and creating will be coming home soon. It has been a wonderful school year and I have seen much enthusiasm and hard work from the students. We are currently working on adding some color to your world.

Their artwork will be displayed in the hallways for you to enjoy. It has been exciting to learn about various artists and their techniques. We have even been surprised at how colors and techniques can work together to create such amazing pieces of art. With lots of dedication

and creativity, their art speaks for itself. Thank you for your continued support of the visual arts and as always…

Never forget ~ Get Smart, Create Art…

Counselor

Happy May Massey Mavericks!!! I cannot believe that the end of the school year is already upon us! During the month of May, I will be meeting with all of the classrooms to talk about safety. As summer gets near I know that our students will be outside and visiting with family and friends more often. These lessons are good reminders about street safety, bicycle safety, not trusting strangers, and to always get your parents’ permission before going anywhere. We will also learn what to say to tricky people and the appropriate way to take action in a tricky situation. Our student’s safety is very important to us and we want to make sure that our students are well equipped to help themselves if they are ever in an uncomfortable situation or encounter a tricky person. I have really enjoyed the 2015-2016 school year and I hope all of you have a great summer!

IB/PYP

PYP Vocabulary: Transdisciplinary Transdisciplinary is a describing word often used in the IB PYP curriculum. This is a word that is hard to get hold of and can be a mouthful. When something is transdisciplinary, it means it is applicable to all disciplines. A discipline is also called a subject area, like math, language arts, science, history, etc. There are three main components in the PYP programme that are considered transdisciplinary in nature. First there are the transdisciplinary skills. These skills can and are used in any subject area. There are five types of transdisciplinary skills: social skills, self-management skills, thinking skills, communication skills and research skills. Skills are as essential to learning as the facts are. Kids need to be able to understand how to learn in order to be successful. The fact that these important transdisciplinary skills are a critical part of the curriculum helps in promoting student achievement not only in school, but in life. Additionally, the units of inquiry are considered transdisciplinary because they focus on a central idea that has many parts to it. Some examples include adaptation, conflict and relationships. It is easy to see how math, reading, writing, science and social studies could fit into any of these concepts. Finally, there are the key concepts, which are posed as questions that one could ask about something in any discipline. These include form, function, connection, change, perspective, causation, reflection and responsibility. In a PYP programme it is essential that learning is about how things work together like real life, not how subject areas are set apart and different. As students complete their last unit of inquiry for this school year ask your students about transdisciplinary skills, the central idea of the unit of inquiry and key concepts. PPCD/Pre-K – How We Express Ourselves - Symbols represent meaning Life Skills – Sharing the Planet – Choices impact our planet Kindergarten – How We Express Ourselves - Patterns can be discovered and expressed in everyday life First Grade – How the World Works - Innovations evolve from changing needs Second Grade – Sharing the Planet - Water is a finite resource that is shared among communities Third Grade – Where We Are in Place and Time – People’s surroundings influence their culture Fourth Grade – How the World Works – Environmental factors disrupt human systems

Attention students and parents: All of the GT Identification Committee decisions were mailed out on April 13, 2016. Students who did not qualify for gifted services may be referred for services again next school year. For more information regarding the Pearland ISD Gifted/Talented identification process, please visit the Advanced Academics webpage of the Pearland ISD website, www.pearlandisd.org, by selecting Advanced Academics under the Departments tab. Squashing Summer Boredom Often times, students become bored in the summer without structured learning experiences. Pearland and its surrounding areas are filled with learning opportunities. Try visiting some of the following places: Armand Bayou Nature Center, NASA/ Space Center Houston, Houston Zoo, Public Library, George Ranch, Houston Health & Science Museum, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Moody Gardens, Bayou Wildlife Park, San Jacinto Monument, and Sea Center Texas. Or try a family fun night with these games: Blokus, Chess, Checkers, In a Pickle, Set, Apples to Apples, Quadrillion, or Dominoes. If your child is more of a techie, have them check out these apps and websites: Khan Academy, Smithsonian, PBS Kids, The Foos Coding App, National Geographic for Kids. For additional ideas and information regarding summer opportunities, please visit the following websites: http://www.txgifted.org/k-12-program-listing http://www.mensaforkids.org/teach/activity-plans/the-summer-seven/ ***Pearland ISD does not endorse, sponsor, or provide financial assistance for any programs listed or any other programs that are not conducted by Pearland ISD. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
