SECTION 1: MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION – SENIOR EXECUTIVE INTRODUCTION Melbourne Business School is Australia's most successful business school, consistently ranking among the top in the Asia-Pacific region. The School is part of The University of Melbourne which has long been an innovator in management education in Australia. It offered Australia's first executive development course in 1956, graduated the first MBA class in 1964, offered the first Executive MBA in 1988, and led the way in Australia in bringing the nation's business leaders into a unique organisational structure which gives them major responsibility in the direction and running of the School. Over the past decade, the School has grown rapidly and is now a key centre for management education and research in the Asia-Pacific region. The School is directed by a Board which includes the chairman and directors of leading Australian corporations. In 2004, Melbourne Business School Limited merged with Mt. Eliza Graduate School of Business and Government Limited, with the latter becoming a controlled entity of Melbourne Business School. It was an appropriate union, the genesis of each company having been in 1954, when two groups of Melbourne businessmen saw a need for the development of managers in the post-war industrial era. In June, 2006, Melbourne Business School received full EQUIS accreditation, the global quality assurance scheme of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). The European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) is an international system of quality assessment and accreditation. Accreditation follows a demanding review conducted by an international EQUIS assessment team comprised of EFMD members, senior academics from the world’s leading business schools, and corporate executives. Melbourne Business School has two campuses: Carlton and Mt. Eliza. Head Office is situated in Leicester Street, Carlton, in a modern complex designed by Daryl Jackson, adjacent to the main University campus, and within walking distance of the Melbourne Central Business District. The School’s Centre for Executive Education is located in a heritage property at Mt. Eliza on the Mornington Peninsula. This Guide outlines the rules and regulations relating to the Senior Executive MBA program only.

COURSE STRUCTURE To qualify for the SEMBA degree, students must complete all ten fully-residential Modules (each of nine days duration) within 18 months. This means that students commencing the program in May must complete the requirements by late September of the following year. As the learning for each Module builds upon the material covered in previous Modules, satisfactory completion of each Module is a pre-requisite for progression through the program. All students are required to be in-residence for the duration of each Module. In limited circumstances, students who are unable to continue with the program may apply for a Leave of Absence and, if granted, re-join the program in the following year. A Leave of Absence will only be granted once and for 12 months. Requests for a Leave of Absence must be made in writing to the Associate Dean, Executive MBA Programs. If a student has failed and is asked to repeat a Module, he/she must take a Leave of Absence until that Module is offered again and must complete the program with that intake. Failure of a Module more than once or of more than one Module will lead to automatic exclusion from the program. Melbourne based modules commence at 11.00am on Saturday and finish at 3.30pm on Sunday.

SECTION 2: FEES AND CHARGES COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT POSTGRADUATE LOAN SCHEME – FEE-HELP To be entitled to FEE-HELP assistance for a MBS coursework program, you must be an Australian citizen, OR the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, OR the holder of a permanent visa who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals. FEE-HELP covers tuition fees only. It does not cover flights, transfers, visas or some meals during the international module. There is no application fee for requesting FEE-HELP. Submissions for all ‘Requests for FEE-HELP assistance’ are undertaken online as part of your University of Melbourne Online Enrolment. You have until the census date to change your mind and pay upfront, but please be advised that after the census date, you are unable to change your payment method. PLEASE NOTE: there is a shortfall between the FEE-HELP limit and the program fee; this deficit must be paid prior to Module 9 of the program. Further information can be obtained at: http://studyassist.gov.au/sites/studyassist/helppayingmyfees/fee-help/ Before deciding how to finance the program, students are advised to also consult an independent financial advisor. SELF-FINANCING Students who pay their own fees are often able to claim tuition expenses as a self-study tax deduction, provided the degree is relevant to their job. Students should check with their financial advisor whether this is possible in their situation. ACCEPTANCE FEE Successful candidates for the SEMBA program are required to pay an Acceptance Fee in order to confirm their place in the program. In 2015 this Acceptance Fee is AUD$5,000. This will be allocated against Module 1 tuition upon commencement.

SECTION 3: POLICY STATEMENTS AND GENERAL INFORMATION CREDIT AND TRANSFER As the SEMBA program is integrative with each Module building upon the learning acquired in the previous Module, students are required to complete all Modules and no credit will be granted for previous study. For the same reasons, transfer from other programs is not allowed. WORKING RULES COVERING CANDIDATURE TIME LIMITS The SEMBA program commences on 2 May 2015 and must be completed over ten consecutive Modules within 18 months, that is, no later than September 2016. In exceptional circumstances, extensions of this period of candidature may be allowed (by a maximum 12 months). Applications for an Extension of Period of Candidature must be made in writing to the Associate Dean, Executive MBA Programs. Where a student has failed and is required to repeat a Module, he/she must take a Leave of Absence from the program until that Module is offered again and must complete the program with the following intake. A student who fails a Module more than once or fails more than one Module will automatically be excluded from the program. WITHDRAWAL FROM MODULES SEMBA students are required to complete the program at the prescribed study rate and withdrawal from Modules is not normally allowed. In exceptional circumstances, and subject to approval by the School, where a student needs to withdraw from a Module or from the SEMBA program after the first day of the Module and before the census date, the notation "WD" will apply to the subject. The following explanation of the "WD" notation will appear in the result transcript:

“WD - Withdrawal approved by faculty for a good cause”. If the withdrawal is not approved by the School, the student will be regarded as having failed the Module. Withdrawal from a Module must be made in writing to the Associate Dean, Executive MBA Programs. ATTENDANCE The School requires students to attend all lectures and classes and to sit for examinations and class tests on the dates prescribed. The assignments and examinations are set on the basis that lectures have been attended. All the Modules are fully residential. All students must be in residence for the duration of the Modules.

ASSESSMENT* Candidates will be informed prior to each Module of the components of assessment in each subject area and the approximate due date and length of each component (e.g. time or words). Students are reminded that only in exceptional circumstances will the School grant permission for assignments to be handed in after the due date or for examination and tests to be taken at times outside the relevant Module. Students will be expected to arrange their commitments around the lecture and assessment schedules for the Modules in which they are enrolled. Assessments submitted after the due date will receive a mark of 0%. All assessments must be successfully completed in order to pass the subject. Grading on the SEMBA program is pass-fail. The assessment for Modules 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10 will be via exams, assignments and/or class participation. Exams will be held at the end of each Module. At the discretion of individual instructors, assignments counting towards the final grade may be required during a Module. In Modules 3, 7 and 9 assessment will be through project based assignments. As part of the assessment a Peer Review process will be used to monitor the contribution of syndicate members. Students are expected to behave ethically at all times. This includes conduct in examinations and assessments. While exams are open-book and are completed by each student individually in their bedrooms, MBS expects that students will not contact each other or outsiders for assistance during exams, nor use access to the internet for assistance in any manner. This also applies to case studies and materials which are required to be prepared for classes – resort to external assistance will be seen as a failure to act ethically which may result in the student failing the Module. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY The University of Melbourne believes that excellence in teaching and learning can be achieved in an intellectual environment where academic integrity is highly valued and carefully upheld. Its policy on academic honesty and plagiarism is based on two core values:

• Education and awareness-raising are fundamental in advancing respect for truth and for the ethics of scholarship

• Work submitted for assessment purposes must be the independent work of students or approved groups of students to demonstrate their mastery of subject objectives.

Plagiarism+ It is the policy of the University of Melbourne that attention be drawn to the nature and serious consequence of cheating and plagiarism. The following are classified as plagiarism;

a) The submission of an answer that is substantially similar to an answer submitted by another student in the same, or earlier years, either at this or another University;

b) The submission of an answer that is not substantially the student’s own work (or, in the case of joint work, not substantially undertaken by the individuals named as having undertaken the joint work);

Page 16: MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION SENIOR EXECUTIVE PROGRAM ... · 9/25/2016  · In 2004, Melbourne Business School Limited merged with Mt. Eliza Graduate School of Business and Government

MBS Master of Business Administration – Senior Executive Course and Modules Guide 2015-16

15

c) The submission of an answer that contains substantial quotations from other works, such as books or journals, without appropriate reference to the source.

The consequences of plagiarism are serious. Any student who (i) copies or otherwise uses the work of another person, or (ii) allows another person to copy or otherwise use his or her answer when both are completing the same or similar assessment, will either lose credit for that assessment, the subject, or be disciplined in some other way. + https://academichonesty.unimelb.edu.au/plagiarism.html ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT The Board of Examiners may require that any student submit additional assessment prior to advancement to the subsequent Module if:

i) the student failed to achieve a passing grade for a subject area within a Module; ii) the Board of Examiners is in doubt as to whether the student has passed a subject area within a

Module; and/or iii) the student has not otherwise satisfied the Board of Examiners’ requirements to be awarded a pass

for the Module overall. Students are warned that short notice of additional assessment tasks may be given and it is important therefore that they can be reached at their nominated address. Additional assessment tasks are required to be completed within one month after notification of results. Students are responsible for any extra costs associated with additional assessment requirements. If the additional assessment submitted is deemed by the Examiner to be of a satisfactory standard, the student will be permitted to enrol in the subsequent Module. If the additional assessment submitted is not of an acceptable standard, the student will be deemed to have failed the Module and the Melbourne Business School’s Student Progress Committee will be required to review the academic performance of the student. The result of the review may be a recommendation for termination of the student’s enrolment in the program. The Board of Examiners is comprised of all Faculty of assessable subject areas in a given Module, the Associate Dean and a senior member of administrative Staff. * http://policy.unimelb.edu.au/MPF1026 SPECIAL CONSIDERATION If students have been affected by illness or other serious causes during the year or during an examination or are prevented from presenting for an examination or submitting required work, they have the right to apply for special consideration in their assessment under the University of Melbourne Statute Section. Students must contact the EMBA Programs Office immediately if there are extenuating circumstances that affect their studies.

Grounds for Special Consideration** Students who have been significantly affected by illness or other serious circumstances during the academic year may be eligible for Special Consideration. Special consideration may be given to a student if: (a) the student's work at any time during the academic year has, to a substantial degree, been

hampered by illness or other cause; or (b) the student has been prevented by illness or other cause from preparing or presenting for all or

part of a component of assessment; or (c) the student was to a substantial degree adversely affected by illness or other cause during the

performance of a component of assessment; (d) the circumstances were beyond the students’ control. Students should note that the submission of an application for Special Consideration does not mean that the application will be automatically approved. Students are strongly advised to sit the examination or continue to complete all work until advised of the outcome of their application. What is Considered Serious? The following are examples of serious and extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control: Hospitalisation, a life threatening illness, a death in the students’ immediate family. Students who have ongoing medical conditions should contact the University’s Disability Liaison Unit who can provide assistance in managing your studies. Applications for Special Consideration Applications for Special Consideration must be directed to the EMBA Programs office and should be made, if on ground (a), not later than three days after the date for submission of the final component of assessment in the subject; if on grounds (b) or (c), not later than three days after the date for submission of the component in question. An application for special consideration in respect of assessment must be made in writing to the Associate Dean, Executive MBA Programs on the University’s HCAP form. This form is available from the EMBA Programs Office. Applications must be supported by a medical certificate or report or other evidence relevant to the ground on which the applicant relies.

17

How Will Students will be Notified of the Outcome of An Application for Special Consideration Students will be notified in writing by email to the student’s University of Melbourne email address on the outcome of their application within 10 working days of receipt of both the application and the supporting documentation. Any student who applies for and is granted special consideration can either: • be given an extension of time on an assignment; • be given an exam at a different time or day; • be given a supplementary exam or; • be offered special conditions for withdrawal and/or re-enrolment in a subject. Managing Your Studies Outside the Special Consideration process Students are expected to plan around regular events that are a part of the normal fabric of life: family life; work and career issues, goals and requirements; as well as interruptions and disruptions to routine that might result from illness, mishap or change resulting from normal life events. **https://policy.unimelb.edu.au/MPF1030

(c) obtain a combined average mark of at least 50% for all of the assessment components combined

(weighted in the proportions shown in the session outline). GRADING SYSTEM The grading system for the SEMBA is Pass/Fail. FEEDBACK ON EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE In accordance with the Statutes of The University of Melbourne, students have a right to look at their exam papers and for the lecturer to discuss their exam performance. Students are not permitted to remove their examination paper from the School. Lecturers are not required to re-mark passing examination papers or to change any mark given for any piece of assessment, unless directed to do so by the Academic Board as a result of an Appeal. STUDY PROGRESS^^ Students must maintain good academic standing while at the School. Failure of a Module is grounds for an appearance before the School’s Progress Committee. Normally, in the case of a single failed Module, the Committee will recommend that conditions be placed on a student’s enrolment. If a student fails more than one Module or fails the same Module twice during their program of study the Committee may recommend that the University terminate a student’s enrolment. Students must meet the conditions placed on them by the Progress Committee and must not fail any subsequent Modules. Otherwise they will appear before another progress committee at which it is highly likely that a recommendation for termination of enrolment will be made, unless there is compelling evidence of an extraordinary situation that might explain unsatisfactory progress. A decision to terminate enrolment can be appealed to the Academic Board (Statute 11.5.7). Details about appeal procedures will be provided to any students who appear before a Progress Committee. ^^ https://policy.unimelb.edu.au/MPF1025

PERMISSION TO WAIVE RULES GOVERNING SEMBA PROGRAM The rules governing the conduct of the SEMBA program of the School are set out in this Guide. All students should familiarise themselves with these rules. Application to Waive a Rule In general, the School will only waive a rule in the Course and Module Guide if the student is facing difficulties of a personal nature such as illness or family crisis. Rules will not be waived for reasons related to work commitments. Should a student of the School wish to apply for permission to waive a rule, the application should be in writing and addressed to the Associate Dean, Executive MBA Programs. The application will be considered by the MBS Curriculum Committee. APPEALS FROM A DECISION OF THE MBS CURRICULUM COMMITTEE Decisions of the Curriculum Committee are regarded as the final decision of the School. Nevertheless, all students enrolled in academic programs of the School are students of the University of Melbourne. Any student of The University of Melbourne who has a grievance with their Department on an academic matter may take that grievance to the Academic Board of The University under Statute 4.1.2(2)(b)* of The University. Any such matter should be raised in writing with the Secretary of the Academic Board, Mr Ian Powell. * For a copy of all the University of Melbourne’s statutes, see: http://www.unimelb.edu.au/ExecServ/Statutes All references to “subject” in the statutes will be taken to mean “Module”.
