egas PBS’ fiscal year ended June 30. For the fifth quarterin a row, you allowed us to exceed our revenue and member-ship goals without increasing the number of days on air.Pledge minutes in our primetime and daytime children’sprogramming are below national averages, so thank you for

responding quickly and generously. Several programs debuting thismonth including Time Scanners, History Detectives Special Investigationsand A Capitol Fourth are a direct result of your gifts.

The end of a financial year is a time to reflect on past results andanticipate the future. For the current television season through the endof May, PBS jumped from the eighth most watched television or cablenetwork to sixth, with nearly 90% of all U.S. television households – that’s217 million people – watching over the course of a year. Locally, thistranslates into almost 2,000,000 viewers a year.

In our new century, “television” has thrown off the shackles of time. Most of our programs are available on your schedule via VegasPBS.org,home digital recorders, Roku or Apple TV, mobile phones or tablets, andeven game consoles. As a result, PBS has had extremely strong audiencegrowth in the digital space. Four years ago, Americans watched twomillion of our videos online a month. Last April, PBS had more than 312million program streams on our web and mobile platforms. Visits to ourPBS KIDS’ educational site have been particularly strong. In April, streaming on PBSKIDS.org accounted for almost half (43.5%) of all timespent by children watching kids videos online!

Additionally, the works your donations support have been recognizedwith countless awards that represent the pinnacle of achievement in ourindustry. PBS producers were honored with three Webby Awards andtwelve Peabody Awards – six times more than any other media organiza-tion. PBS was recently nominated for three Television Critics Awards, forFRONTLINE, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Sesame Street. Locally, VegasPBS earned a record five regional Emmy nominations.

These successes are the result of a true sense of collective purposeamong unique viewers who make investments in local PBS stations to ful-fill an essential public service mission designed to help everyone – ofevery age and from every walk of life – reach their full potential. VegasPBS works every day to provide trusted educational programming that isuniquely different from commercial broadcasting -- treating viewers ascitizens, not simply consumers. As you page through this month’s VegasPBS Source magazine, I hope you will take great pride in the remarkableprogram content annual fund and sustainer gifts make possible for every-one in our community.

novels by Agatha Christie. Whether he’s on holiday abroad, taking a countryside

whether they ask for his help or not.

This week’s mystery, The Big Four, plunges Poirot into a world of global espionage, set against

the backdrop of the impending WWII. The public is in a panic after the shocking death of a Russian

Al Capone (front and center) being escorted to the train in Chicagothat will take him to U. S. Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta.

Al Capone — the quintessential self-made American man, ruthless killer or both? America’s best

known gangster, he was the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United

States during the 1920s Prohibition era, with a leading role in the illegal activities. Just his name

sparks images of pin-stripe suits and bloody violence. Despite his illegitimate occupation, Capone

became a highly visible public figure. He made donations to various charitable endeavors using the

money he made from his activities. To this day, Americans are fascinated by this celebrity gangster.

The question is why? Repeats Sunday, July 27 at 1 p.m.

Former Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa went missing on July 30, 1975, never to be found. Hoffa,

a hero to many working Americans, played a major role in the growth and development of the truck-

ing union. But he fell afoul of the law, with allegations that the powerful pension fund was under

mob control and used, among other things, to finance Vegas casinos. What exactly happened to

Hoffa that day, and why? Recently declassified FBI files and interviews with people close to the

story allow a detailed accounting of what likely occurred. The investigation is an exploration of

Hoffa’s final days and hours and a revelatory window on power and corruption in the post-war era

labor movement. Repeats Sunday, July 27 at 2 p.m.

egas PBS will expand educational literacy and technology services in

Southern Nevada with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

(CPB). Vegas PBS was one of a small number of sites chosen nationally to

receive ongoing funding as part of the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative.

The Vegas PBS Ready To Learn project is a major provider of early childhood literacy out-

reach programs based on national PBS children’s programs. In just the past two years,

approximately 150,000 children and 90,000 parents have been directly impacted by the pro-

gram, fostering lifelong literacy and educational success.

Children often lack the basic early math, literacy and persistence skills necessary to

succeed in school and work. Vegas PBS leverages viewer support for daytime television

programs with grants from donors such as Capital One, Wells Fargo, and the Kara and

Harris Foundations to address the school readiness issue, particularly in low income com-

munities. This RTL project grant expands the use of multiplatform media beyond television

to include interactive educational games and

mobile apps, as well as hands-on workshop

activities to engage and strengthen early

learning experiences for children ages 2-8 at

home, in preschool and in other out-of-school

settings.

Working with partners such as the Clark

County School District, Las Vegas Clark

County Library District, Henderson Library

District, United Way, Andson Foundation,

After School All Stars and the YMCA, Ready

To Learn workshops serve children throughout the community in many locations. Vegas

PBS will also provide training to local educators on how to use RTL multiplatform content

and to parents on how to engage in math and literacy activities at home.

The Vegas PBS RTL workshop program was launched in 1998 and has grown annually. It

seeks to enhance the educational effectiveness of PBS children’s programs, using related

classroom curriculum, web materials, mobile apps and community workshops. Las Vegas

children spend more than 2.9 million hours a month viewing PBS daytime programs, and

visit the PBSKids.org educational website 660,000 times a month spending 394,000 hours

on interactive educational games featuring PBS characters.

Research shows that early childhood learning can help children succeed in school and

in life. The need for low-income families who frequently have reduced access to education-al resources is even greater. With additional support from our many partners, Vegas PBS con-

tinues to extend resources to help families support their children and be “ready to learn.”

Secrets of the Dead:Bones of the BuddhaJuly 2 at 10 p.m.

NOVA: Ghosts ofMurdered KingsJuly 2 at 9 p.m.

In the hills of Ireland’s CountyTipperary, a laborer harvesting peat from adried-up bog spots the remnants of acorpse – a headless torso almost perfectly

preserved and stained dark brown by thebog. Archaeologists recognize it as one ofEurope’s rare bog bodies: prehistoriccorpses flung into the marshes. The corpseeventually will be dated to the Bronze Age,more than 4,000 years ago. Forensic evi-dence reveals a shockingly violent death.A new theory emerges that they are ritual-ly murdered kings, slain to assure the fer-tility of land and people. This ancientdetective story opens a tantalizing windowon the beliefs of Europe’s long-vanishedprehistoric peoples.

his fascinating new series brings cutting edge tools to some of the biggest histor-

ical mysteries from America's past, as three investigators team up to solve each

case. They unearth fresh evidence, sift through clues and crisscross the country

in search of answers, revealing new perspectives on stories we thought we

knew. This week's episode explores one of the worst maritime disasters in U.S. history in Civil

War Sabotage. When it mysteriously exploded on April 27, 1865, the Mississippi steamboat

SS Sultana was packed with Union soldiers heading home from the war, killing 1,500. What

really sank the Sultana? Was it Confederate sabotage? The team scientifically tests theories

of the boilers’ failure, and researches the stories of a Confederate agent and spy, and a for-

mer Union inspector’s deathbed revelation.

The Hayloft Gang: The Story of the National Barn DanceSaturday, July 5 at 10 p.m. on Vegas Jackpot! One of the most popular and long-running programs on radio was the “National Barn Dance.”Debuting in 1924, the show blended music, comedy and down-home theatrical skits. The pro-gram served two audiences — the rural farm audiences and city listeners who had come fromthese communities and wanted to remember the “good old days.” The program tells the storyof a changing America though the lens of one of early radio’s most popular and influential pro-grams. From the Great Migration of the 1920s to the Depression through the hardships ofWorld War II, the Chicago-based variety show unified rural Americans with its nostalgic brandof traditional folk music and country humor, and helped define an identity for a struggling gen-eration. Garrison Keillor narrates.

Death in ParadiseMondays at 10 p.m.on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Scotland Yard DI Richard Poole is sent tothe Caribbean island paradise of SainteMarie to solve a fellow policeman’s mur-der. Having done so, the straight-laceddetective finds himself seconded to thelocal police force as the dead man'sreplacement, despite his hatred of sun,sea and sand. Poole proves to be a brilliantdetective, solving several complex mur-ders. In this week’s episode, a woman notonly predicts her own murder but alsogives a description of the murderer, but itall feels too easy for Poole. Can a casefrom the past help solve the present daymurder? And more importantly, can Pooleconvince the team that it has nothing to dowith voodoo spirits?

ho better to cover the Paralympics, the international sporting event for ath-

letes with physical and intellectual disabilities, than Niko von Glasow, the

world’s best-known disabled filmmaker? Unfortunately – or fortunately for

anyone seeking an insightful and funny documentary – this filmmaker

frankly hates sports and thinks the games are “a stupid idea.” Born with severely shortened arms,

von Glasow serves as an endearing guide to London’s Paralympics competition. As he meets a one-

handed Norwegian table tennis player, the Rwandan sitting volleyball team, an American archer

without arms and a Greek paraplegic boccia player, his own stereotypes about disability and

sports are delightfully punctured.

Antiques Roadshow:Vintage Salt Lake CityMonday, July 21 at 8 p.m.on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Back in 1999, Mark Walberg and crew vis-ited Salt Lake City, Utah. This week theyreturn with a look back at some of its mostmemorable objects, what they are worthtoday and how the market has changed. Some treasures have increased in value, while others haven’t fared so well.Highlights include Napoleonic prisoner-of-war pieces, a Mormon certificate of grati-tude, and beaded Kiowa objects that previ-ously came in at $29,000-$36,000 and noware appraised at $35,000-$40,000. Doc Martin (Season 5)Saturdays beginning July 26 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

artin Clunes returns for a fifth season as the brash doctor Martin Ellingham,

whose blunt opinions and tactless manner causes mayhem in a small Cornish

community. He gets a job in the beautiful but sleepy village of Portwenn replac-

ing their deceased local doctor, but his abrasive personality doesn’t exactly

mesh with the pace of life in Cornwall. This new season finds

the curmudgeonly yet somehow charismatic doctor dealing

with the trials of becoming a new father. At the same time

he and the child's mother, Louisa Glasson, have issues

of their own. As if that wasn’t enough, there is

one more complicating factor — Martin is still

contemplating leaving Portwenn for a new

consulting career in London.

ritain is extraordinarily rich in prehistory: monuments of stone, fragments of domes-

tic life and the remains of people who walked the land thousands of years ago pres-

ent an amazing tale of survival, technological innovation and revolution that laid

the foundations of modern society. Now, former archaeologist Neil Oliver travels

the British Isles to uncover this remarkable story. In part one, the land and the stone that comes

from it, is viewed as sacred. Stonehenge is the center of this landscape, a place where the living

can commune with the dead. In part two, metal comes to Britain from Europe. The art of using fire

and of working metal is a religious activity. The first swords appear, and warriors challenge the

shaman class. Wealth, imports and exports create new social forces. After thousands of years,

Stonehenge is abandoned.

ext month, we continue our

fantastic “Summer of Surpises”

with a stylish new series set in

London in 1961. The story fol-

lows the exploits of doctors, nurses and spouses

connected with a busy obstetrics ward at a

National Health Service hospital. Jack Davenport

(Pirates of the Caribbean, “Smash”) stars as a

brilliant London surgeon in 1961, when doctors

were treated like gods and acted the part. Hiding

a dark secret amid the complexities of the sexual

revolution, the story takes place in a time when

gynecologists are all men and nurses aspire to a
