He immediately called and booked it for Denver — and scored a fashion coup in the process: His is the only city in the U.S. to get it. The museum is dedicating prodigious square feet to the show, in fact, which opens March 25. Saint Laurent, who died in 2008, is remembered for his revolutionary approach to women’s clothing. “He is surely the founder of what Hillary Clinton calls, ‘the sisterhood of the traveling pantsuit,’ ” says Heinrich. Besides dressing Catherine Deneuve, Princess Grace of Monaco, Paloma Picasso and Diana Vreeland, YSL put women into gender-bending incarnations of men’s business suits and into the now-iconic “Le Smoking” tuxedos, of which more than 30 are on view in Denver. “He was a visionary,” Heinrich says. “He knew what women wanted.” Saint Laurent often drew inspiration from great painters, including Picasso, Van Gogh and Mondrian. (Heinrich sees the influence of Matisse in some of Saint Laurent’s “wild color combinations.”) The retrospective is divided into different periods of the designer’s career, spanning 1958 to 2002.“One of the most amazing things,” Heinrich says of the show’s 200 garments, “is that they’re all original. … Saint Laurent never sold the dress they showed on the runway. They always kept the original.” If someone wanted it, another was made to order.
